Inclement Weather PolicyIf there is a cancellation or delay at TFS due to inclement weather, daily mass will also be canceled. The schedule of the parish offices and other programs and events may or may not be affected. Please check the parish website, call the parish office, or check WRAL or WTVD for information concerning all cancellations and delays. As always, please make the safest decision for you and your family before deciding to attend any event.

Here’s the schedule for February February 18 WeeklyFebruary 25 Weekly

Looking for friendly, welcoming people to answer questions after Mass and register new parishioners online. If you have one hour for training and 20 minutes after Mass, you could be the welcoming face of St. Francis! Contact Kathleen Owen, [email protected] or 919-847-8205x241.

Back in November/December, our parish conducted a survey and the survey contained questions about different aspects of life here at St. Francis – our liturgies, faith formation, outreach, pastoral programs, schools, facili-ties, and finances. We received the results back in December, and since that time a small

group of parish members has been looking at the information we received back and looking to see what trends or patterns emerge.

On Thursday, February 22, we will hold parish meetings to discuss what we learned from the survey. We will hold two sessions: one at 9:30am, and the other at 7:00pm. The location will be either Nathony Hall Founders room (at the end of the long hallway off the gathering space, past the restrooms), or Clare Fellowship Hall (the larger space as you exit straight out the church and across the breezeway). All are invited and we will decide on which location for the gatherings as we get a sense of the size of the crowd. Many thanks to all who helped throughout this process and blessings on your week!

If you’re feeling burdened by life, please consider getting a Stephen Minister. If you’re dealing with relation-ship issues, illness, life transitions, a Stephen Minister can help. For more information, contact Kathleen Owen, [email protected] or 919-847-8205x241.

May he rest in peace and perpetual light shine upon him:

+ Bob Efford Father of Susan Gialenious

The parish offices will be closed on Monday, February 19, in honor of President’s Day.

The Bishop’s Annual Appeal and Charity

The Bishop’s Annual Appeal and WorshipWorship lives at the center of who we are as passionate stewards. All that our life is and can be is an answer to God’s grace. Our life is a GIFT. When this gift is fully, consciously, and joyfully lived as a disciple of Christ, through his body and his church…,we are responding to God for all of his goodness. Jesus didn’t waste time proposing unrealistic ways of living. “Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on a rock…Everyone who listens to these words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on the sand.” (Mt 7:24, 26) Our St. Francis home becomes stronger each time we come together to worship. When we share the gifts God has given us with one another and with the world, we are creating a pathway to the heart of God. Deepest gratitude for your participation in this year’s BAA. Please contact Deb Royals Mizerk if you have any questions at [email protected] or 919-847-8205x222.

For over 20 years, Eugene Taylor—“Drum Prophet” has been entertain-ing audiences with his unique musical style—an eclectic mix of whistling, finger snapping, drumming, and tapping. And for the past decade, his music has pro-vided therapy to patients at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, as he routinely transported patients to and from surgery while singing to them and tapping out soothing rhythms on a small drum that he carries with him everywhere he goes. He has carried his unique form of music therapy to patients and healers throughout the region, serving hospital populations with his soothing voice and hopeful words as a “wellness ambassador.” His audiences have included staff and patients in hospitals, residents of nursing homes, and schoolchildren from pre-K to eighth grade.

Lenten Tenebrae ServiceWednesday, March 28 At 6:30pm, come and pray with us as we prepare to celebrate the holiest days of the Church year, the Triduum; three days marking Jesus’ passion and resurrection. Tenebrae, meaning “darkness” or “shadows” in Latin is a traditional prayer of the Church that reflects the darkness of Good Friday with the gradual extinguishing of light.

The entire season of Lent is a time for turning away from worldly things and turning towards God. The season calls us to take time out for God in an intentional way, to examine our lives and look at where we sin, and to ask for forgiveness and open our hearts to God’s mercy. We are also called to accompany one anoth-er in community, praying for one another, and helping the least fortunate among us. For this reason, many people “give up” something for the season as a sacrifice. You may also hear of people “giving in” to something instead, for example, going to daily Mass or waking up earlier each morning to pray, volunteering at a soup kitchen, or becoming a mentor. We do all these things throughout Lent to prepare ourselves to celebrate the great feast of Easter and Jesus’ triumph over the grave.

Although it is still February, with the warming days this past week, it feel like Spring’s in the air. Before we know it, the Pear trees and Cherry trees will be awash with white, and then the Red Bud, Dogwood, and Tulip Poplar will follow in a parade of soft rainbow of petals. Since I moved to NC eight years ago, every St. Valentine’s Day has been the day I’ve planted my first pea seeds in my garden. This year, that day is also Ash Wednesday. I love the imagery of entering Lent by placing cold, hard, dormant seeds into the dust and clay and spending the next 40+ days tending the sprouts with love and sacrifice, compost and water, and death and life. My kids are already anticipating those first fresh shelled peas that will arrive amidst our Easter alleluias.

Perhaps you’ve always wanted to try your hand at gardening and would love a community of folks to learn from, or perhaps you used to garden and are looking for place to renew your love for growing things, or perhaps you just love being outdoors and feel God’s presence among the butterflies and birds. Consider being a part of our Franciscan Community Garden located on our campus (in front of the log cabin on Leesville Rd.).

This season marks the 8th growing season for our garden. Last year, we grew over 2000 pounds of produce, which was then entirely donated to Interfaith Food Shuttle for distribution to people in Raleigh who have poor access to fresh foods. By way of a “kick-off” to our growing season, join the Community Gar-den Ministry for a potluck and seed germination get-together on February 24 at 11:00am in the Founders Room. We'll seed tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. Please let us know if you can join us. This is a great opportunity to meet members of this ministry, hear about our Community Garden, and find ways to be involved in our 2018 growing season. Contact Pat and Paul Kelly with any questions, [email protected]

Our Community Garden: Growing Food for Others

Trevor Thompson, Director of Justice and Peace

St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) is a Catholic lay organization inspired by Christian biblical values and through its many years of service across our country, it encourages men and women to grow spiritually by offering person to person service to those who are needy

and suffering. The SVdP conference at St Francis of Assisi has been ministering for over a year now and it is working to help meet the needs of our parishioners and neighbors in the vicinity of our Parish. The objective is to provide assistance, helping our neighbors through a financial crisis which might leave them homeless, or perhaps having their utilities shut off, without essential medication or without vehicle support thus leading to a job loss. A study done by the University of Notre Dame showed that if you can prevent a family from becoming homeless you save the Government an average of $20,000 to get the family stable again. This ministry is a ministry of encounter. Those who call and are in our area are visited by two SVdP Visitors who get a detailed assessment of the neighbor’s situation. They may follow up as needed to contact a utility com-pany or landlord. The goal is for one-time assistance, not continual financial aid. The Visitors then present their findings and recommendations to our SVdP conference members for review and approval. If the neighbor calling for assistance is not in our area of coverage, we try to give them resources for assistance in their area. Every story is different. A single mom with 4 children at home was laid off from her job. She was facing the cutoff of her electricity and water before Thanksgiving. SVdP was able to prevent the shut off and connect her to the Feed the Need Ministry for a Thanksgiving Meal. Another neighbor was laid off after 15 years of working with a company. After 6 months, she finally found a new job, but had exhausted her severance money and her savings. SVdP helped with her rent for the last month before she started getting a paycheck again. Often the visit with the neighbor helps them see alternatives and lets them know that someone cares. This is one of the many ministries supported by the generous donations from parishioners. We are partnering with Catholic Charities to further serve and need additional volunteers to do visits. Although we are a first line of assistance for a neighbor, we may also if needed refer neighbors to Catholic Parish Outreach for food or other resources. If you have an interest in exploring SVdP further, please contact the parish office for more informa-tion, 919-847-8205. Please pray for our volunteers who make the decisions on assistance to our neighbors.

    Community Center Activities

When I was a child, I was thoroughly thrilled with each milestone. Getting a bicycle was awesome! [Mine was silver with red stream-ers.] When I was finally able to see over the counters in the shops I felt so grown up! And getting to drive – such freedom! Each milestone was appreciated – and then I’d move on to the next one.

Most all of my relatives were in Scotland so I didn’t get to see any grandparents, aunts or uncles begin the process of getting older. My parents and my mother-in-law were the only models I had for how the milestones would eventually be letting go of abilities rather than celebrating new ones. Learning to anticipate these losses- the ability to drive a car, understanding the difference between junk mail and bank statements, being able to follow the conversations in a tv show or movie, remembering – is something none of us were prepared to accept.

It’s so important to remember that we’re here on this earth for God’s purposes – not just ours. He is working through us each and every day that we let Him. To equate your quality of life with your ability to drive or to live independently is to doubt God’s wisdom and power. But it’s hard sometimes to see the forest of God’s grace through the trees of losses we see as we age.

So this past summer, when I heard Dr. Tracy Poe speak about how you can set yourself up for a better life as you age, I was all ears. She described how she works with people to change how they view their situations just by listening to what they are say-ing – not the words they use, by honestly talking with them about options – not just telling them what can never be, and figuring out what they realistically have control over – you can make the difference between living a satisfying life or just marking time.

Dr. Poe will be kicking off a new series of presentations, “Living Your Best Life…As Time Goes By” - starting March 4, at 3:00pm in Anthony Hall Founders Room. She will talk about the “Psycho-logical and Spiritual Aspects of Aging” and what we can do for ourselves and our families to make the most of our time. On March 18 at 3:30pm in Founders we have Melanie Bunn who will speak on “Caring For Loved Ones with Memory Loss” and finally on April 15 at 3:30pm in Founders Room, we have Becky Sansbury who will present “Hidden in Plain Sight: Resourses for Resilience”.

  • STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. At St. Francis Preschool, STEM is integrated into our curriculum helping the children to explore, observe, ask questions, and predict. It’s a part of their learning experience all year long. This month, our young learners discovered the concept that states of matter change. Through various melting experiments, students were able to learn we need heat and warmth to change from a solid to a liquid.

    Education Ministries

Teaching STEM in PreschoolEighth grade students from The Franciscan School, primarily from the STEM and Creative Computing elective classes, recently took a field trip to the NC State University Design Lab. The students were given a tour of the School of Design labs for architecture, industrial design, textiles, animation, and graphic design. Following the tour, students heard a presen-tation on the design process that all design-ers follow; they then were given the opportu-nity to put the design process into practice. Small groups were given a description of a person, a problem faced by the person, and a specific product to create that would solve the problem. Utilizing the design process, students made prototypes of their products and presented them to the group. Our students showed great creativity in designing such things as multipurpose pens that had heating and cooling features, shoes that would react to a pressure plate and self-tighten with telescoping hands, and chairs that provided light for studying. All the students were engaged in the process and were proud to present their design ideas to the group. We are accepting applications for the 2018-19 school year. For more information about TFS, the application process, or to schedule an individual tour, contact Lura Tysiac at [email protected] or call 919-847-8205x469.

Our Formation team follows the model of meeting Christ, coming to know Christ, loving Christ, and then serving Christ. Often times, when we serve Christ, we end up meeting Him and the cycle begins again. This was lived out on February 4 at Saint Francis' third annual All Family Service Day, sponsored by our Justice and Peace and Formation departments. On Super Bowl Sunday, 350 parishioners gathered to trace and cut shoe parts from jeans to be sent to the organization Sole Hope in Uganda. Donations were also collected, which will be used to pay salaries of Ugandan employees who will receive these shoe parts and sew them together to create shoes for people who have never owned a pair of shoes in their lifetimes. These shoes protect the feet of children who are affected by jiggers, painful parasites that lead to infection and can even cause death. Between the two sessions, families helped cut out and prepare 220 pairs of shoes to send to Sole Hope in Uganda. Jeans were also collected for local migrant farm workers here in North Carolina. As families served Jesus Christ at this Super Sole Sunday, it was clear they also came to meet Him in one another and in the Ugandans they were serving. Thank you to all of the Saint Francis families who made a life-changing difference for hundreds of Ugandan children at our 3rd Annual Family Service Day.
