2016 NEWSLETTER New Name Defines Future A new name and logo for our ministry was announced at our annual spring fund- raising dinner on April 7th, 2016. CWJC of Middle Tennessee continues our transformational ministry under the name Begin Anew of Middle Tennessee! Begin Anew was chosen to convey a new beginning and hope that comes from Christ as expressed in the Scripture, 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new cre- ation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come!” We remain steadfast to our mission. Begin Anew is a new chapter, a new vision, defining the future of our service. A service that brings hope for a brighter future to so many hard working men, women and families doing everything they can to make a better life for themselves. We be- lieve everyone deserves the chance to Begin Anew! New Site Opens at Woodbine Church Begin Anew completed a one year Woodbine com- munity assessment with Brentwood Baptist which led to an exciting time in January 2016. With funding from Brentwood Baptist Church, Begin Anew opened an auxiliary site at The Church at Woodbine, offering ESL classes on Monday evenings and Wednesday mornings. The Begin Anew staff and volunteers assisting with the opening had no idea how many students would show up for classes. To our surprise and delight, within the first two weeks we had a total of 52 ESL students — 16 men and 36 women from at least 15 countries attending class! We had obviously hit upon the felt need of the commu- nity! As the weeks continued, we were all amazed at the Charlotte Hanson (center) and Woodbine ESL (English as a Second Language) class prepar- ing for worship service. continued commitment of our students and their great desire to learn. 2016 Spring Fundraiser

Treasures in the Darkness, based on Isaiah 45:3, was the theme for Begin Anew’s 2016 Spring Fund-raising event, held April 7th at Brentwood Baptist Church. This year’s event raised $199,151 in gifts and pledges. Event costs were just under 11%, al-lowing proceeds to support programs in Madison, Nashville, Franklin — and now, Woodbine. Thank you again for your generous contribution.

Madison Fundraiser Dinner We have so much to celebrate and we hope you will join

us at Madison Church of Christ for our annual fundraiser dinner on September 15th @ 6:30 pm. Dinner and home-made pies would be enough for us but let’s add Channel 4’s Rudy Kalis as our emcee and a special performance by 1WORD! Most importantly, guests will learn about all the changes and growth experienced by Begin Anew in the last year — • Changing our name from CWJC to Begin Anew• Expanding the Madison Men’s program • Adding a new site in the Woodbine area• Hearing success stories from our students

You will not want to miss this special evening celebrating the opportunity to “Begin Anew”!

Understanding Our ClientsWould you and your family be able to survive on a salary

of $7.25 an hour? Working 40 hours a week, your weekly salary would be approximately $290 before taxes.

Without a high school diploma, computer and jobs skills or proficiency in the English language, 120,000 individuals in Davidson County are employed in low wage jobs or they are unemployed.

They struggle daily to meet the financial needs of their households, including resources to invest in the lives of their children. Nashville’s economy is growing and thriv-ing, however the number of persons living in poverty is not declining and residents living on low wages are not benefit-

ing from the growth. Begin Anew provides these adults and children with the

education, mentoring and resources they need to change their circumstances and their lives. When a family is strug-gling to overcome the obstacles caused by poverty, the power of developing connections with others who believe there is hope for change is the element that makes the dif-ference.

Begin Anew is committed to connecting with these fami-lies by establish new ministry locations and expanding our services. We believe everyone deserves a chance to Begin Anew. — Rebekah Sumrall, Executive Director
