Their St or ies, Our Lessons

The English department is hosting a reception on Thursday, May 11 celebrating the publication of Their Stories, Our Lessons, a collection of oral histories written by English I students who interviewed residents of The Highlands last fall. Fifty-four senior residents were interviewed by 174 ninth graders, and this reception marks the culmination of a year-long writing & publication project, funded by a Trust for Our Future mini-grant. Students and seniors will have a chance to visit with each other, enjoy light refreshments, and hear several of the stories read aloud. Complimentary copies of the book will be given to senior participants; students may purchase a copy for $8. Order forms have been sent home to parents.

Grant Suppor t s College Visit s In early April, 170 sophomores traveled to six college campuses for a chance to experience a ?college atmosphere.? The goal of this annual event is for students to get a feel for a college campus; students are not matched to particular campuses. Mt. Ararat?s program is part of the sophomore advisory curriculum and funded through a MELMAC grant. Eighteen teachers accompanied the students on the trips.

The campuses visited included: University of Maine at Farmington, University of Maine at Augusta which included a tour of the architecture school, University of New England with a chance to see their marine science center, University of Southern Maine at Gorham, Thomas College, and St. Joseph?s College. All the colleges indicated our students were welcome to return any time. Student comments ranged from ?I liked seeing what college classrooms look like,? ?There was a really good music/theater program and I loved the performance,? ?They have good food!? to ?I learned that you can play club sports and don?t have to be a varsity player.?

Other MELMAC sponsored events include: Academy students and their teachers traveling to Southern Maine Community College in South Portland for a tour and lunch, and ten freshmen attended Bowdoin College?s Aspirations in Maine Day where they were immersed in the college experience.
