Deep connection, solid faith and a corresponding belief system are at the core of all resonant religious experience. Only then can the religious experience alter our consciousness from mundane and preoccupied to numinous and transcendent. Whether by silent prayer in a church, mindfulness meditation from moment-to-moment, or chanting an incantation in sacred space, devotional practices bring us spiritual nourishment. Who can say that one is better or more viable than another? Our spiritual sensibilities can be as different as any of our other preferences in life. I know about these differences. I am a Pagan priestess. Not your usual fare, not the majority. It’s too bad that the word “pagan” still carries with it centuries of bad press. Images of cackling witches around a cauldron filled with putrid ingredients, bloody sacrifices, and frightening hauntings are, unfortunately, among those that come to the mind of the uninitiated. Rooted in the medieval Inquisitions’ torturous righteousness, and subsequently in our collective unconscious, the original meaning and beauty of Paganism has continued to take a beating. All these years later, many Pagans are still in the broomcloset. Secrecy ensures our perceived safety. The original meaning of the word pagan is “of the earth” or “earth-dweller.” In this regard, “pagan” actually refers to everyone,

because earth is where we all dwell. In a spiritual context, Paganism comprises practices that recognize, honor and celebrate the divinity in the natural world. Just as within other faiths, there are different sects in Paganism whose practices vary, but at the root of them all is reverence for Mother Nature and her cycles, her beauty, and her diversity. After all, she is the foundation, the underpinnings of our very lives. She provides our food, our shelter, our clothing, our everything. Her seasons and climate directly affects how we live day to day. Like all good Pagans, I follow the cyclical model for the passing of time called the Wheel of the Year, on which there are eight natural earth holy days called sabbats: the solstices and equinoxes and the cross-quarter days in between. I celebrate them in community with rituals to mark the seasonal changes, deepening my spiritual understanding. For over 20 years, I have welcomed the return of the light at Yule, dedicated myself spiritually at Imbolc, blessed seeds at Ostara, reveled in sensuality at Beltane, worshipped the Sun at Litha, harvested at Lughnassad, embraced the dark half of the Wheel at Mabon and mourned my beloved dead at Samhain. These rituals support my spiritual growth. They strengthen my faith, and keep me steady, grounded, and present in our uncertain world. When you follow the Wheel of the Year in spiritual practice you encounter, and hopefully embrace, every aspect of our earthly lives. The third week in September brings Mabon, the autumn equinox, the time when we enter into the dark half of our yearly solar journey. Like its polar opposite the vernal equinox, Mabon is the 24-hour period when day and night are equal in length. Nature shows us, if only fleetingly, that balance is possible. We seek to emulate nature at this time by reflecting

on the concept of balance in our lives, so crucial for our well-being as we turn to face the long, dark and (here in the Northwest), gray and rainy season of winter. Ah, balance. That elusive state of being in which we experience as much rest as we do work, have as much pleasure as we do hardship, where we give as much credence to the dreamy intuitive as we do to the logical and linear. In my circle, we enact ritual gestures representing this balance. For this reason we meet at twilight, for it is the twilight of the year. To honor the harvest aspect of the season, we each bring vegetables we have either grown

ourselves or gotten from a farmer’s market for our collectively-made soup. This delicious bounty of the earth, reminiscent of the tale stone soup but without the trickery, simmers away on the stove inside as we begin our ritual outside. We light luminaries to delineate the circle and welcome the energies of earth, air, fire, water, and spirit. We contemplate how we wish to keep our personal balance during this next turn of the Wheel. Then we walk the balance beam as a metaphor of holding that balance. Our beam is a six-foot long 2x4 that we have painted along its length in black on one side and white on the other. We place it on the ground oriented from east to west so that as we walk, we move from the seasons

Some people might call me a productivity junkie. I’ve studied and used a lot of productivity and time management systems and books. Even the words planner, calendar, or organizer get my heart beating faster. I love planners, have used tons of them, both digital and paper, and have yet to find the perfect one. What I realize is that our culture has us focus a lot of our efforts on doing. Many of us spend a lot of time organizing our daily to-do lists, goals and dreams lists, and working with our calendars. How about who we are and who we are becoming? What about having a to-be list in addition to a to-do list?

When our doing flows from our being – who we are and not what we do – then our doingness has more meaning and can flow better. Here are some ideas for increasing a sense of beingness within daily doingness. 1. Each day you must begin knowing what you want to accomplish. You can’t just show up for work and then sit there wondering what you’re going to do. The night before you finish for the day, look at what needs to get done and organize the next day. Then when you show up, you can begin work right away. It’s the same for being. Who do you want to be? What qualities do you want to embody in your life? Write them down. Patient. Loving. Respectful of others. Staying in the presence. Living healthy. Being kind to self and others. Being more aware. 2. Ask who you would be if you embodied the qualities you say you want? How would

who seem to thrive on negativity. It is totally okay to make your space a whine-free zone. Begin with yourself and when others see what you’re doing, they might follow suit. And if not, they will find another place to complain and whine because you don’t encourage them. 7. Keep work surfaces clear and organized: organize your mind and keep it clear of mental clutter that doesn’t serve you. Choose

an affirmation for the day that supports who you want to be and use it as a mantra. 8. Choose three qualities every day. These can be the same for awhile or can differ. It’s important to write them down. We live in a physical world so it’s important to make plans physically as well as ways to follow-up. Use Ben Franklin’s method of giving yourself a dot on a card or piece of paper every time you do what you said you would do. If you don’t want to use paper, there are many digital apps that allow you to keep track of your behavior. The results of doing this are you will approach your day in a more organized way, with calmness and joy instead of feeling stressed out, worried, and rushing around. You’ll learn to focus more on who you are becoming which will have a huge impact on the things you choose to do.

you organize your day? How would it be different? What would your priorities be? 3. Are there public figures, saints, or others who embody the qualities you want to adopt? Get their pictures and put them in your day planner, on your computer, somewhere you will see them. Study their lives. Read about their struggles and how they overcame difficulties. What can you adopt in your life to be more like them? 4. Guard your time, guard your mental and emotional space. Don’t let your own whims or other people derail your plans. Know what you’re about for the day and do it. This doesn’t mean you can’t be respectful of others nor does it mean you can’t change course when it’s smart to do so. Just like taking a road trip, sometimes you run into a detour and have to take a different route. 5. Don’t let others control you. Decide who you want to be and guard that jealously. Sometimes it is easier to be who others want us to be rather than being the person we want to be. Take a look at this and be sure you’re becoming who you want to be. 6. Don’t let complainers bring you down or change your focus. We all know people

of spring and summer with their light and growth and bounty, to the seasons of autumn and winter with their depth and harvest and dormancy. We take turns walking the balance beam again and again as we raise energy by clapping and singing our Mabon chant: “Balance, equality, flow, and ebb. Dissolve into the autumn web!” It reminds us that not only are we at the balance point of the season, but that like all things in our temporal reality, it cannot remain. At the after-ritual feast, we warm our hands around our full cups and savor the rich soup under the darkening sky. Stars appear as night holds sway. Our hearts are soothed as our bellies grow full. We trust we can embrace the darkness now because it is necessary for balance in the big picture. We bless the harvest with our gratitude, breaking bread and sharing it around with a hearty “May you never hunger!” Simple ritual like this helps us stay present as we walk along the wheel of time. There is comfort in doing this, a sweet magic that serves to hold us in troubled times. By marking the seasonal changes in sacred space, our connection to Mother Nature deepens. It helps us remember how deeply we belong.

The short “truth tale” that follows is intended to help us learn two very simple, yet crucial spiritual lessons in letting go. Read it carefully. Within its story is hidden the secret place where peace and stillness reside as one. A father once took his young daughter to a nearby old growth forest. He knew that the stillness and beauty of the massive trees would work their enchantment on her, as it had always done upon him. And he was right; her little heart was at home in the quiet depths of these ancient trees. All was well for the first several moments, but then something broke into the peace of the place. As they walked farther into the forest, he could see that his daughter was becoming overwhelmed. She would be looking at a particular tree when the sun would pass behind a cloud, giving rise to a great shadow that would move through the woods. Everywhere dark shapes stretched out, as if to touch her, and then the light would shift, creating motion somewhere else. On and off went this shadow show, so that one minute she would be absolutely captured with enthusiasm for the beauty of the light, and the next minute she would be scared by the encroaching shadows. As her emotional state escalated, her father realized that her limited understanding was not enough to correct the developing negative condition within her. And so, taking action before she became any more frightened, he took his little girl by the hand. “Come on, sweetheart,” he said, and they walked back out of the forest and headed for the place where he knew a special lesson awaited her. They walked hand-in-hand for

20 minutes or so, got outside the trees, and climbed a gentle hill to its crest where they could get a panoramic view of the forest. They sat down on the edge of the little bluff together and quietly looked down on the woods spread out beneath them. What a magical sight. The little girl saw dozens of shadows caused by the clouds as they moved beneath the sun, even as she saw that the sunlight passing over the crown of the forest would create tree shadows within the woods that reached out and then raced back into nothingness. She saw the whole of the forest and its invisible relationship with the world around it. Wordlessly, she realized that no event

happened by itself. And most importantly, from her new vantage point, none of the things that had troubled her within the forest troubled her now. She grew very still. Peace returned to her. Her new view of reality had granted her this gift. From that day on, whenever they went to the woods, she was no longer afraid. We, too, have within us a new, higher vantage point; a very special part of ourselves within which we may be at peace regardless of what goes on around us. This yet-to-be realized state of ourselves may be called conscious self-awareness. Through its power, instead of being pulled down into painful identification with the passing shadows of life, we can discover a life in a peace far above the reach of any fear. This higher world and this peaceable kingdom of now dwells within you. Allow your heart to remind you what the mind so easily forgets: there is a peace. There is a shelter. There is a timeless place in each of us that no darkness can shatter or dispel. Make it your one intention to spend your time there. Prefer its ever-present company to that of any promise of peace to come, and watch how your life grows happy and whole in stillness beyond compare.

As a soul proprietor committed to delivering the best service or products you can, one of the best ways to gain new customers and clients, to create valuable contacts, and expand your network, is through referrals. Hands down, there is just no better marketing than when a customer or colleague tells others about you. We typically call this kind of marketing “word of mouth.” While it’s not hard to get referrals, many of us miss valuable opportunities by making common mistakes. Here are 10 of the most common mistakes soul proprietors make when seeking referrals. 1. Not asking. The biggest mistake is simply to not ask. Many people don’t have the confidence to ask or miss the opportunity entirely for some other reason. You may be afraid that you’ll appear needy or that you’re imposing on other people. What you may forget is that you’re not just

3. Moving too fast. Have you ever just made a purchase – say, insurance, or a home security system – and the sales person immediately asks you for the names and numbers of three of your closest family members or friends? Before you’ve experienced their service? Asking for referrals is all about timing and you can destroy your chances if you ask too soon. If you’ve just met someone or just made a new sale and they don’t yet understand the value you can offer them, they may feel imposed upon if you start asking for referrals. So wait. It usually works better if they can see and experience the benefits you offer first. This is often why business networking doesn’t work for many people. 4. Moving too slowly. On the other hand, you could move too slowly. You might miss the crucial moment

10 Common Referral Marketing Mistakes

benefitting yourself. You’re benefitting the other person as well by offering your help and services. You’re also building a network of like-minded people who can help each other in the long-term. When asking, there is one critical thing to remember: anytime you ask someone to give you a referral, you are putting that person at risk. Risk that, if you don’t do what they say you will do, they will look bad. So it is imperative that anytime you ask someone for a referral that you are also ready to deliver as promised. 2. Appearing desperate. When asking for referrals, you want to avoid looking desperate. It shouldn’t appear that you’re begging or that you only want to get something from the person you are asking. Instead, focus on their needs. Pay it forward and do a favor without expecting anything in return.

to ask and then it’s gone. It’s common for people to wait too long to ask for referrals for a variety of reasons. As the days pass, the memory fades in your potential referrer’s mind. There’s a sweet spot that’s the perfect time to ask for a referral and you have to tune-into when that time is based on the services or products you offer. 5. Forgetting to follow up. After you’ve been referred to someone, it’s important to get in touch right away. Why let a good, warm connection die? A referral is a warm lead and yet, too often, many soul proprietors simply fail to contact the referral. You must have a system in place for following up on referrals you get. A warm lead, via a referral, is the best kind of lead to have. Additionally, many people make the mistake of losing touch with the very people who could give them many more referrals in the future. You need to stay in touch, update your connections and remind them of the valuable relationship you share. 6. Giving the wrong message. If you make the wrong impression on the people you meet, they won’t understand what you offer or what you need. The result is that they won’t give you referrals or they’ll refer the wrong people to you. You need to clearly communicate what you offer in terms of benefits to your customers, and you must make sure your potential referral sources understand those benefits. 7. Letting yourself be misrepresented. The same goes for your referral sources. They need to understand what information to convey about you to potential new contacts. If they misrepresent you, you’ll lose valuable referrals or get the wrong kind. Part of a good referral marketing system is to outline the key points you want your contacts to communicate. You can even go so far as to write suggested speaking points they could say. 8. Failing to identify your ideal referral. It’s nice to build up a list of contacts, but

this isn’t how you get good referrals. To get good referrals, you need to identify your perfect-fit prospect. This is the type of person you hope to meet through your referral marketing. You must be able to tell the person you are asking to give you a referral exactly who you want to be referred to. If referral sources don’t know who to refer to you, they may end up thinking they don’t know anyone when you ask. 9. Failing to differentiate. Likewise, a major mistake many people make is failing to differentiate yourself from the pack. You need to identify what sets you, and your business, apart from others. This is the true value you offer, and it needs to be communicated upfront. Why would a contact recommend you if you’re just like all the rest? 10. Failing to plan. Referrals don’t just happen. If you go out and meet people, it’s likely that you’ll gain a few lucrative contacts. But it will mean a great deal of networking with little result. Just like your business and marketing strategy, you need a well thought-out and organized plan for getting referrals. This is how you make referral marketing successful. If you’re making any of the above mistakes, stop and reassess your strategy. It may be time to go back to the drawing board and rethink how you’re going about looking for referrals. Make changes to your referral plan and see what results you get.

A Course of Love is a course for the heart. Remarkably, it bypasses the mind. It uses thought to go beyond thought.

It may be astonishing to hear that there is now a “continuation” of A Course in Miracles, but it is true. Forty years ago Jesus dictated his Course to the scribe Helen Schucman. More recently, over three years, he similarly dictated to Mari Perron. He named it A Course of Love.

My Saint My Hero is a line of spiritual jewelry that was started by two Catholic women who wanted to make a difference. Their pieces are wearable blessings that have a story and meaning behind each piece. They have blessings bracelets, handmade heirloom rosaries and prayer tools that are blessed before being sent out into the 1,000 stores that carry the line. We saw the Benedictine Blessings bracelet which is meant to remind the wearer to do the mission they came to do; a bracelet that reminds you to breathe; a set of bracelets that you can wear with a prayer partner and a child’s blessings bracelet. of the year, we’re given a fictional story for the eight seasons. The author says that from the pagan perspective everything begins in darkness, so she begins her book with the sabbat of Samhain, known as Hallowe’en in secular society. Now is the perfect time to get this book and use it throughout the next year. As the founding priestess of the Gaia Temple in Seattle, Wash., Rev. Laxer has a lot of experience celebrating the seasons and says, “Each story demonstrates, through the experiences of the character, how the changing of the seasons is a spiritual model for the soul.” She introduces each story with information about the particular sabbat it demonstrates so those unfamiliar with the pagan wheel of the year can still enjoy and use the book. If Ernest Holmes is one of your spiritual heroes, you will want The Ernest Holmes Papers (Penguin Group). And if you don’t know who he is, this book will give you a great introduction. He is the founder of the Church of Religious Science, now known as Centers for Spiritual Living, and his work forms the basis of a lot of the current day New Thought and New Age materials available. This book contains a collection of three inspirational classics long out-of-print, along with material discovered after his death. The three volumes are: The Philosophy of Ernest Holmes, The

Anatomy of Healing Prayer, and Ideas of Power. You can’t go wrong with this book and will want it as part of your permanent spiritual library. If weight loss is on your radar right now, here are three books to take a look at and see if they resonate with you. Core Reset Diet, Reconnecting Body & Spirit by Steven Worley (Kope Quest) is about reframing your relationship with food so that it becomes more about being a source of nourishment rather than a crutch. After discovering the circadian rhythm that governs most of our biological

systems, the author put this information to work and began to eat a good breakfast, having a maintenance level lunch, while lessening the amount of calories he consumed closer to bedtime. He also incorporated drinking water, exercise, and getting in touch with true hunger rather than eating just because it was time to eat.

During this summer I have been doing lots of private counseling, behavior modification, and training sessions with people and their dogs. Before I go to work with my clients in person, I always have them compile a list of problems, complaints, questions, and goals. It is amazing how similar these lists can be, but that is a topic for another column. The point I want to make here is that with the majority of lists, the problems can be remarkably reduced if consistent and good exercise is provided for the dog. One item on the list often prevents that: not coming when called and/or not staying close off-leash.

I use a treat pouch hooked onto my pants or a fanny pack around my waist so they are easy to get to. Go to the center of the area with the pup on leash. Give the pup a treat so he knows you have them. Let the pup off the leash or drop it letting him drag it. Then casually wander in place not really going anywhere, ignoring the puppy. Let the puppy pick the direction. When the pup begins to go in any direction, you

immediately start walking off in the opposite direction. Because the area is unfamiliar he should follow you. Keep walking away from him until he catches up to you and then verbally praise and treat him on arrival with a food reward. Repeat this process several times. As the pup gets more familiar with the space, he will not follow you as quickly. When that happens, say something like “bye-bye” and run away from him.

This will trigger his chase instinct and he will run after you. Keep running until he catches you, then verbally praise and reward. If the pup does not follow when you run away, find a place to hide. Dogs’ perception of movement is excellent but their focus vision is not so great so you can stand behind a tree or bush or just stand still next to something, making sure you keep an eye on your pup. When he realizes you are gone do not let him panic for too long. Jump out from hiding acting silly with words and actions and run away. Keep running until he catches you and verbally praise and reward. The lesson you want him to learn from this is: when we go places, it is my job to pay attention to my human

FYI and generally speaking, coming when called is more a product of good, consistent leadership on the part of the owner rather than training, but there are some really great come-when-called games that really help. I explained my favorite one in my winter exercise column in the October 2013 issue of New Spirit Journal (which is available online). One of the most important things to teach your dogs is to pay attention and stay with you off-leash. I have a special off-leash-following procedure that I have done with all of my dogs for at least the last 30 plus years. I call it going on “field trips.” This exercise is intended to do with puppies but I have used it with older dogs too, with good success. I would not do this with dogs that are not bonded to me or dogs that are known to just take off at a dead run whenever given the opportunity. They are extremely rare. The most important part of the field trip is to find an area to go to that the dog has never been before. To work correctly it must be unfamiliar territory. Find a large open field with some trees or scrubs if possible. The area can be fenced but does not have to be. Take along some high-value food rewards. They only need to be large enough to taste so can be very small but very attractive to the dog.

life. Lively, bright, and thought-provoking, these cards are fun to use as well as tools to encourage spiritual growth and insights. Wouldn’t it be interesting to peek inside the homes of religious leaders, spiritual guides, activists and others and see how they pray? This is exactly what you get to do in How Do You Pray by Celeste Yacoboni (Monkfish). With original contributions from 129 teachers and writers, the book gives a lot to think about and perhaps, incorporate into our own prayer journey. Nikki Sculley incorporates water on her altar while Donna Eden likes to be directly on the earth. Matthew Fox “prays always,” and Patch Adams says he had never thought about God or prayed. This is a fascinating and thought-provoking book. Gates of Power, Actualize Your True Self by Nomi Bachar (Findhorn Press) is based on the author’s own journey as well as her 20 years working with clients. It walks you through all aspect s of life, giving ideas, practices, and principles that you can

apply to your daily living. There’s nothing left out of the program and if one actually used this book over a period of time, they would be able to step into their own sense of power and integration. Meister Eckhart, A Mystic-Warrior for Our Times by Matthew Fox (New World Library) is a treat for those who want a new insight to true Christianity. Fox puts Eckhart into the same room with people like Rabbi Heschel, David Korten, Black Elk, Carl Jung and others and shows how their teachings meld with those of Eckhart. This book shows how relevant this popular teacher from the 1200-1300s is to today’s world and how some of his concepts can be applied to the pressing issues our planet faces today. It is an in-depth read that is challenging as well as illuminating.

The Microbiome Diet by Raphael Kellman, MD, (Da Capo Press), introduces the concept of the microbiome, the trillions of tiny creatures living within our bodies that outnumber our cells 10 to 1. The book offers a ton of research and shows how the condition of our gut influences not only weight, but all other factors of health as well. A four-step program of diet and supplements is given that involves the four Rs: Remove unhealthy bacteria, replace digestive enzymes, reinoculate with healthy bacteria. Repair the lining of the intestinal walls. The process sounds intriguing but also very complicated and would require

a lot of dedication to follow-through. The promised results, however, just might be worth it. The third weight-loss book is Think Eat Move Thrive by Dr. James Rouse and Dr. Debra Rouse (Beyond Words/Atria). This is a “wellness program that engages the mind so we can identify beliefs and habits, eat with intention to provide optimum levels of daily performance, and move in such a way that will strengthen our bodies and mental well-being.” After laying out the theories behind the book, a 30-day practice – full of personal stories from the authors who are both naturopathic doctors – is given showing how to implement the ideas. One of the things I most enjoyed about the book is that it is sprinkled with QR codes so you can use your smart phone or tablet to watch videos of the authors explain ideas further as well as showing exercise and cooking videos. Did you know, according to the 2011 Institute of Medicine Report from the Committee on Advancing Pain Research, 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain? That is nearly four times the number of Americans estimated to have diabetes and more than the total number of Americans with diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke and cancers combined.1 Pain interferes with our activities of daily living and ability to work. When pain seems unrelenting, depression and a feeling of hopeless-ness can creep in. Over-the-counter and prescription medicines may not address the cause of the pain and often cause some nasty side effects. I was inspired to write this article because there are so many natural ways to support our bodies in the healing of both acute and chronic pain. This article highlights my top five clinical recommendations when it comes to managing pain.

1. Foods to eat We eat every day, so why not choose foods and seasonings that can support our healing? Here are a few of my favorites: • Fatty fish (like salmon and sardines) are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Consuming these fatty acids can help reduce inflammation. Walnuts and flax seeds are vegetarian options rich in some omega-3 oils. • Turmeric – In the culinary world, turmeric is often associated with curries and Indian food. Curcumin is one of the active constituents that help give turmeric the reputation of being a top notch “natural anti-inflammatory.” It is best absorbed by the body when combined with healthy fats, like coconut oil. • Ginger – Ginger is one of my favorite herbs for improving circulation and relaxing spasms. This warming spice can used in cooking, made into tea, or consumed in herbal formulation blends (i.e. capsules). Any way you slice it (pun

In Ayurvedic medicine, oils are prepared with herbs and ingredients that promote healing when applied topically. One of my favorite oils is Dhanwantaram oil. If Ayurvedic oils are not readily available in your area, one of the most healing oils for topical use is readily available castor oil. Many naturopaths recommend castor oil packs for helping calm inflammation, improve range of motion and promote tissue healing.

5. Physical Medicine This is terminology that I use when referring to the healing power of touch. Here are just two of my favorite examples of healing touch therapies. • Massage Therapy: There are many types of massage therapy available. I have found a few types especially therapeutic for my clients. Abhyanga – an oil massage from Ayurvedic medicine – is great for times when the nervous system is involved as it is very calming and balancing. Deep tissue

massage uses a more penetrating pressure and can help directly decrease muscle tension. Trigger point therapy is useful when the muscles are particularly tense in specific areas (trigger points). • Craniosacral Therapy: Craniosacral therapy is a very gentle form of bodywork in which the practitioner uses light touch to work with the fascia and alignment in the body. Fascia is connective tissue that covers and protects our muscles, blood vessels and bones. This connective tissue can get tight and contribute to misalignment of our bony structures. The name of this therapy may imply that it would only work on the sacrum or cranial bones, but in fact I find this therapy to be helpful for many types of aches and pains throughout the body. The bottom line is that there are many natural ways to manage and heal aches and pains. Other very effective natural methods include homeopathy, acupuncture,

intended) ginger can be very beneficial for acute and chronic pain conditions. • Dark Cherries (and their juice) – Cherries are rich in anti-oxidants and

especially helpful in some forms of arthritis and gout. Other foods and seasonings known to assist with

pain and inflammation complaints include: cayenne, peppermint, berries, yogurt and certain mushrooms.

2. Magnesium Magnesium is a mineral that helps relax muscles. I have seen great results using

magnesium for assisting in pain relief,

especially when muscles are stiff and tight. Here are a few ways to boost your magnesium levels: • Foods: dark

leafy greens, legumes, nuts and seeds. • Supplements:

Oral magnesium supplementation supports

muscle relaxation. It is best to check with your doctor to find what form and dosage is right for you. • Epsom salts: Magnesium is found in Epsom salts and can be absorbed through skin during a relaxing soak. I typically recommend adding two cups of Epsom salt per bath, and soaking for 15-20 minutes.

3. Herbal Medicine Herbs are available as single remedies or in formulations containing multiple herbs. • Rosemary – This fragrant garden herb has a rich history in herbal medicine for use in promoting circulation. Improved circulation can help decrease pain because it promotes blood flow to the tissues. • Boswelia – Boswelia, known commonly as Indian Frankincense is actually a plant resin that has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine for pain and inflammation. • White willow bark – A traditional Native American remedy that has analgesic properties from chemical compounds called salicylates. When taken in herbal form, salicylates tend to cause much less irritation than their pharmaceutical counterparts.

Beloved mother, grandmother, cherished sister and friend, Dorothy Lynn (Walsh) Donovan left Earth for Heaven on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014. Dolly was born and raised in Butte, Mont., attended St. John’s Grade School, and graduated from Butte High. An accomplished twirler, she enjoyed being a Butte High majorette as well as participating in the VFW drum corps in many Fourth of July parades. She attended Montana Tech and later graduated with a degree in interior design from Cloverpark Technical College in Tacoma, Wash. In 1968, Dolly married Richard “Dick” Donovan and the newlyweds moved to Tacoma, where she remained for the rest of her life. The couple welcomed their only child, Sean “Shamba” into the world in 1973. Dolly worked as a professional interior designer for many years. She was especially proud to be a founding member of the Northwest Society of Interior Designers. She had impeccable taste and possessed an abundance of creativity, expressed in her design work as well as in oil painting, greeting card creation, and stamping. She loved making beautiful cards for her family and friends, and enjoyed gathering with her stamping friends, especially Angela, to share ideas. After many years of design work, Dolly transitioned into becoming a much respected and sought-out intuitive counselor. Known professionally as Dorothy Lynn, she helped innumerable people in this capacity. Dorothy Lynn was a deeply spiritual human being with friends from all walks of life and sought to see the good in every person she encountered. Kind and generous to all, she was quick to forgive and desired to create harmony among all. She was a gifted spiritual teacher who will be very missed by her family, friends, and clientele. Dolly will be greeted at Heaven’s gate by her little brother Ricky, her parents, her Uncle Joe Baravetto, and her dear friend

Dorotha, who all preceded her in death. She is survived by her dog, Quan Yin, whom she cherished, and was very proud that Quan Yin is a Tibetan dog. She will be profoundly missed by her son, Shamba (Mae-Lynn Smith) of Wilmington, Del.; her grandchildren Olivia Grace and Eloise Greer of Wilmington, Del.; her brother Walter of Helena, Mont.; and her three sisters Rosalie Walsh (Alan Thompson) of Helena, Mont., Theresa Bayani (Arteen) of

Denver, Gayle George (Dan) of Portland, Ore.; her favorite cousin Colonel Larsen, with whom she grew up, and her other cousins. Also, close friends Lin Lauren, Angela Hoffman, Debbie Bergman, and her many other friends in Tacoma, as well as her Sunday spiritual group and her many clients. Godspeed, Dolly. Namaste, Dorothy Lynn. You have been a gift in our lives and a powerful teacher; thank you for helping us grow in our spiritual path, teaching us new ways to pray, and for modeling the lessons of patience, kindness, generosity, and forgiveness. We will miss you deeply. We love you immensely. Memorial donations may be made to The Dorothy Walsh Group Home, C/O BSW 845 South Wyoming St., Butte, MT 59701. Also, [email protected].

and stick with them. If I do not, they always go the opposite direction and if I get lost, it is scary. Newly learned behavior must be generalized, so be sure to do a field trip in at least three different locations. Each location can only be used once for maximum effect. Do as many as you can whenever the opportunity arises. This will give you a great foundation for the life of your dog. I have used this exercise with clients and their dogs at beaches and even off-leash dog parks because their dogs would not stick with them. They were adult dogs and very familiar with the areas. We made it a game, exaggerated everything, and had really high value treats. We tried to run away and lose the dogs. It was majorly successful every time I have done it. Use a variation of this to teach your dog to check-in on off-leash walks or hikes. Always have your treat pouch with you when you go walking with your dog. Begin the walk with a treat to prime the dog. Then whenever the dogs checks in with you, give a treat and praise with “Good check-in” or another phrase of your choosing. During the walk, call the dog

back to you sometimes just to treat him for the good behavior. In the beginning, the food reward is consistent and given every time the dog checks in-or comes when called. Ingrain the habit so he expects the treat. A random food reward is the strongest way to strengthen canine behavior. So once the pattern is established, make the treat a random reward. Treat every other time, every three times and then only once in a while. That way it is always worth checking-in or coming, for the dog, as it might be a time he gets a treat. Tip: When it is time to leave or end the off-leash part of your walk, withhold the treat until you have put the leash back on your dog. Happy trails.

Why does moving water touch us so deeply? It may be because water flows. To watch a river is to glimpse what life is really like: a great river of dancing energy that has been flowing and unfolding for almost 14 billion years. Rivers call to us because they remind us of this flow of life and our longing to trust it. But we have lost our trust in life and spend a lot of our time trying to control it, hanging on to branches along the banks of the river that is our life. And because we get more battered doing that, we sometimes just get out of the river, sit on the bank, and become half-alive. Both of these strategies for controlling life – trying to make it be a particular way and then disconnecting when all of our attempts to control don’t bring us the peace we long for – are the way most people navigate their lives. These strategies only bring suffering because they are a form of resistance, and resistance tightens our minds, our bodies and our hearts, and it ultimately hurts us more to resist life than to consciously show up for its flow. But we can learn to trust life so that our main focus shifts from trying to change it to opening to it. The way to experience this is to soften our bellies, open our hearts, and use our minds to be curious about life rather than always trying to make it be different than what it is. I wake up every morning and say to life, “Where do you want to take me?” My life is an adventure that I am slowly and surely learning how to show up for. Can you feel the joy of that? Can you hear how that takes you out of struggling with life and invites you to engage with it, as it is, rather than trying to make it be a particular way? At the same time, can you feel how that scares your conditioned self because it feels like it has no power and no choice? But that is just the fear-based mind that doesn’t understand that the greatest power you will

ever discover doesn’t come from managing life; it comes from engaging with life, right here, right now. I assure you, having been somebody who got out of the river, dug a big hole in the ground, and crawled into it for

a time, that the safest thing you will ever do is re-enter the river. Yes, the river has rapids, and whirlpools and waterfalls, but as you awaken to life, you begin to have an entirely new relationship with your daily river, you begin to pay attention. Attention is like putting a life vest on your heart (being willing to be as kind and compassionate with yourself as possible) and stepping into the river of life, keeping your feet pointed downstream (as they recommend if you fall overboard on a river rafting trip) so you can see what life is doing right now. Very quickly it becomes clear that the river is always changing, but it is nothing to be afraid of; in fact, it can be fun. With a curious mind and open heart, you

can feel the currents of life and respond to anything that comes your way. It can be scary at first to open into the unknown. But once you recognize that the belief that you can control life is an illusion, and that this brings far more suffering than showing up for life, you will begin to be curious about what the next bend in the river will bring. Even when life is moving you through whirlpools and stage five rapids, you will wake up every morning with a sense of adventure in your heart on the great river of life. By Trisha Mahi

There was a time when the world saw people who had “second sight” as being unique and gifted. These people were often considered witches and were burned at the stake. So, development of these talents was often kept in secret. We are now living in a wonderful age in which we can open the windows wide and admit we are psychics or mediums without being hauled away in an oxcart with kindling around our feet. Therefore, it is my belief that anyone can develop an ear for other dimensions. My husband was the biggest skeptic when it came to his own powers. He was a precognitive as a child and thought everyone dreamed the day’s activities before the day began. Unfortunately he became older and that power slipped away from him. He is

now picking up little bits of information and listening to the voice within him again. I was fortunate in that the ability to hear or see things beyond 3-D was part of my childhood culture, so for me this came naturally, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t develop the same level of talent that any medium or psychic has. Developing the ability involves practice and time. I have to practice my craft or I get rusty and unsure of myself. The same thing goes with playing the piano or any other mental exercise. Practice is key. One way to start is by a quick meditation every day to get rid of some of the crosstalk and noise that goes on in our heads. What normally goes on in my head during the day is noise like changing radio stations really quickly and a few words come in, and then a few other random words come in.

Meditation slows this chatter down to a dull roar. After you have played with meditation for a little bit – not perfectly, just have a feel for quieting your mind – call in your angels and guides and Source for protection and see what pops into your mind. This is key. Call for protection before traveling in the busy and sometimes dangerous streets of the beyond and you will be fine. Just give yourself a few minutes a day to let your angels know that you are listening and see what comes up. It may be a picture (clairvoyance) a feeling (clairsentience) or words spoken (clairaudience). The more you practice, the better results you have. Keep notes on what you discover, or invest in a small tape recorder. You can track your progress this way. This practice works even better if

We Are All Mediums. We Are All Psychics! you have someone who is not in the least judgmental to be there to observe and offer encouragement as you go along. For some reason beyond my comprehension the presence of another person helps. There might be something to the Biblical concept that having “two or more of you” gives power to the session of prayer or psychic exercise. There is a beautiful new world out there waiting for your exploration. The curtain separating you from a fabulous adventure is as thin as mosquito netting. Come explore, experience joy beyond words, colors beyond everyday human sight. It is all there waiting for you.

most fun times he’d ever had. 9. How about pretending that you’re the greatest litter picker upper in the world? (My secret is finally out!) 10. Another idea would be to impress someone by asking them out on a first date with you for a “fun raising” to benefit the planet. Once they smile – and they will smile – you’ve broken the ice. What a great opening line. No one could turn down an offer like that. 11. When others litter we can pick up their litter, asking in a good way that they would dispose of it more mindfully next time. 12. We can have more waste

receptacles available in high-traffic public areas. 13. Picking up litter is a form of exercise we can do outdoors that’s great for the waistline. 14. If you use the right approach, your community or city park department may even offer you a fluorescent vest and a litter pickup tool. Mine did! 15. Don’t just pick up the litter and rush off. Take a few minutes to feel and see the before and after difference. 16. Picking up litter can be even more fulfilling when considered as a sacred ceremony. The sacred can be made to be more special when we keep it to ourselves. In Finland, you won’t find

any litter. Either no one litters or else they pick it up so fast it doesn’t have time to hit the ground. We could have more of a challenge with that here in the U.S. However, as we’re all able to “play” with this new focus, we’ll be able to make a huge difference, even if it at the rate of one bus stop at a time. As we honor Mother Earth in this way, we also honor each other. We’ll see you on the playground!

Paul Timo is a native Seattleite who enjoys picking up litter. Paul also helps clients release physical pain in-person or by phone, utilizing an energetic releasing method that he learned back in 1988. [email protected], (425) 260-8878.

meditation techniques, physical therapy, and chiropractic care. What works best for one person, may not work as well for another; that’s why it is so great to have so many different tools to try. The most important recommendation that I can make is for you to pay attention to your pain. Pain is the physical body communicating with us and trying to get our attention for a reason. Numbing pain – by any means – can be dangerous as it can allow us to ignore underlying issues and where the pain is coming from. It is crucial that we listen to these messages and identify the

cause of pain to prevent further health issues. Once the cause of the pain is known, we can make corrections and use natural treatments (like those listed above) for relief and healing.

Changing the world, one listener at a time!

By Rev. Wendy Rae D.D.

Sage is traditionally used throughout many cultures as the dried plant to burn for energy cleansing and clearing. Saging a home, business, or new space is a popular way to bring the wonderful energy of sage into your healing or spiritual practice. Did you know that sage (salvia officinalis) is more than just a kitchen spice or energy cleansing plant? Common sage is part of the mint family, along with lavender, oregano, rosemary, thyme, and basil. Its beneficial medicinal properties have been touted as providing healing for sore gums, gingivitis, sore throats, and is a great plant to help stimulate lazy digestion. It is common for women to use sage to regulate hot flashes from menopause and sage can also stop heavy menstrual bleeding. Sage is rich in antioxidants and vitamin K. Sage is currently being researched to help improve memory and treat Alzheimer’s Disease. A study in Vienna indicates that common sage has anti-inflammatory properties worth exploring further. September is the perfect month to get outside and harvest some sage to use as a culinary delight or to implement into your healing regimen. Before fall sets in and this beautiful plant goes dormant for another season, obtaining your own stash of sage is easy. To harvest sage, simply cut back the stem, bundle a few stems together, and hang upside down in a dry space with good airflow. Drying sage out of direct sunlight is important to keep the beneficial properties intact. This method could take up to a month. If you have a dehydrator, drying sage

on a low setting for 24-36 hours should give you a nice dry material to work with. You can create your own medicines with common sage, add sage to soups and casseroles, or you can burn this incredible aromatic herb to cleanse the energy of your personal space.

A few quick serving ideas to increase sage in your diet

1. Sprinkle sage into your Italian sauces for cooking. 2. When baking chicken, fish, or lamb, put a sprig of dried sage in the foil with your meat. The meat will absorb the aroma of the sage and give a subtle flavor enhancement. 3. Sage is a great companion for egg dishes: scrambles, frittatas, quiche, or fried eggs. 4. Adding sage to your soup recipe will bring about all the healing properties of this aromatic herb. Making an infused sage oil is a great way to utilize the healing properties of sage in a topical way. To make an infused oil, you will need approximately 1 cup of dried sage material (stems, leaves, flowers). Place the dried material into an 8-ounce jar. Pour your carrier oil of choice (olive oil, sesame, or grapeseed) over the dried material. Cover and shake. Then place in a dark cabinet that you open frequently. Whenever you open the cabinet, shake the jar to stir up the plant material and oil. Repeat for two weeks. Then strain the oil through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, and bottle. You can use this oil as a topical anti-inflammatory for skin irritations and rashes. Sage oil can be a great healing tool for candida infections and irritations. You can also use this infused oil to rub on sore gums or mouth ulcers. Common sage may be common, but the healing properties of this incredible plant deserves to be respected, utilized, and understood. Happy saging!

Seriously. If you had cancer three times, do you think you would be able to call it a gift? Most people who have cancer once don’t view the experience as a gift. Yet this is what Brenda Michaels has done. She shares the story in her book The Gift of Cancer – A Miraculous Journey to Healing that she co-wrote with Marsha Mercant (Sky Horse Publishing). Many of the readers of New Spirit Journal know Brenda as the co-host of Conscious Talk Radio with her husband Rob Spears. Marsha is a multi-award-winning actor/singer/voice-over artist who turned her creative passion to writing, as co-editor of Fearless Women, Visions of a New World and the editing of several other books. After trying to write this book about her experiences with cancer and not succeeding, Brenda released the project, thinking it wasn’t meant to be. Shortly afterward, she was nominated for the Fearless Woman Project in Seattle and attended an event in California where she met Marsha. Having lost her best friend to cancer, once Marsha heard Brenda’s story, she knew she wanted to be the one to co-write this book. Thus was forged the partnership needed for the project to move forward. The first time Brenda had cancer she was only 26 years old. “I wasn’t very conscious at that time in my life, and I was willing to go along with what the doctor said I should do. They were very upbeat about it; said I should have a hysterectomy, that they would remove all of the cancer and I shouldn’t have it again,” she explains. Brenda says that she was very good at hiding her real feelings, putting on a happy face, and making the best of things. She and her family trusted the doctors, did as they said, and she went on with her life, not thinking about the cancer again until 13

years later. “I found a lump in my left breast and I put a spin on that as well, listening to what the doctors told me. They said it was just an infected milk gland. I felt it was something else but I was really good at putting a lid on my intuition and not facing my own feelings. They misdiagnosed me for nearly two years. By the time I had been properly diagnosed, they had to remove that breast.” Again, they said she would be okay. She believed them and went on with her life until a year later. “This is when they found cancer in my right breast and this time it was in lymph nodes and it was very serious. The doctors had wanted me to do chemotherapy the first time cancer was in my breast, but didn’t really insist on it. This time, they insisted that I do chemotherapy. I was told that if I didn’t do this, the cancer would metastasize within a year and there would be nothing they could do for me.” This is when Brenda began to pay attention to the signals her body was giving her and to her intuition. She says she realized she had a systemic problem that wasn’t going to go away with surgery or chemotherapy. Something inside her rose up and said she had to get underneath what was happening and do more. Once she began to listen to her body, to her intuition, the courage to follow these feelings was there for her. Brenda explains, “The best way to approach an illness is to understand the body is giving you a message. The body is saying that things are out of balance in your life. Sit up and notice. Really pay attention. Take some deep breaths and breathe into the body and ask what it’s trying to tell you. Use automatic writing, journaling, spending time going within yourself; these are the only ways to get the answers. Use your intuition, your gut feelings. If something doesn’t feel right for you, then it isn’t right for you even if it is the standard protocol. “If chemotherapy or some other treatment is right for you, then I say do it with all the gusto you can. If it’s not right, be willing to examine and explore so you can find out what is the best approach for you. Just because you’re told this is the best approach doesn’t mean it is the best approach for you.” Brenda says that emotions and beliefs have a lot to do with illness and disease. “Our experiences are guided by our

beliefs, how we perceive something and then we build a story around that perception and that becomes what we believe about the story and this impacts our experience. But we don’t think about it consciously and evaluate it.” Marsha adds, “No matter what you’re going through – family, financial, work – it comes in a different form for everyone – these principles work. It helped me when I understood what Brenda was going through. It helped me in shifting my dreams and going into another life, which is what has happened for me in the past few years.” Brenda says, “Everything has purpose in our lives. We are spiritual beings and our souls set up certain experiences and connections we’ll have with people. Can everyone survive cancer doing what I did? I don’t know. I didn’t know if I would survive it. We don’t know what our walk is. Just walk through it with as much compassion and love as you can and have respect for the process. Not everyone will survive cancer, but the experience is a gift no matter what.” This experience caused Brenda to face death squarely in the face. She read books, went to classes, and began to get a new perspective about who we truly are and she learned there is life after we drop this body. She learned this wasn’t the end for her if she died. It’s been 25 years since Brenda’s bout with cancer. One can wonder how her health is today and whether or not she fears a return of the cancer. “My health is great and I don’t fear cancer coming back because I don’t entertain it. I’m not in denial, it is a choice I make. What we focus on the most, we get. What we fear the most we bring to our doorstep. Our feelings and emotions are extremely powerful and are the magnet

that pulls experiences toward us. If I am supposed to have an experience of it again, then that is out of my control and I will do my very best if that happens,” Brenda says. Marsha adds, “And if someone is meant to leave this life through the cancer experience, that is also a healing. My best friend went through a remarkable healing before her death. The last few weeks she was in the hospital, she felt peace and went through the experience with astounding grace. People came from all over the country to say goodbye to her. She said she was holding court as people came into the room. We talked and laughed. That was her healing. It wasn’t meant for her to stay here. I saw her be healed in this process.” “How can that not be multiple gifts?” Brenda adds. “She was present to the experience. We must be present to our lives whether we’re in the living process or the dying process. When we’re present, there is so much to be gained no matter what’s happening.”

Several events are coming up in October when Brenda and Marsha will give talks at Unity of Seattle and East West Bookshop. Learn more at www.intentionalshift.com and at www.conscious talk.net. Listen to this inspiring interview in its entirety at www.newspiritjournal.com.

WITHOUT TRYING THIS!Using an energetic releasing method that I learned

from Dr. Lawrence Crusoe of Tacoma in 1988, wecall the extent of your condition a “10” and then

lower it to as close to “0” as we can. The clienteffortlessly releases stress and nerve block.

Most people are still living with the effects of theirfirst surgery, the cutting of their umbilical cord! This

procedure is great preventative maintenance, a“tuneup”, that keeps stress from building up.

We all know that stress is what causes disease.

This procedure works extremely well over thephone. In person appointments are available

for first timers. One session couldentirely change the quality of one’s life.

Chief Sun Bear of the Bear Tribe (of the Spokane area), at a medicine wheel gathering held at Fort Warden in 1990, posed the question: “Who’s the most powerful person at a bus stop?” When no one had an answer for him he responded by saying that it was the person picking up the litter. Maybe I’m mistaken but it seems that in the past there was more of a consciousness about litter. There were popular sayings. “Every Litter Bit Hurts” was one. There was the television spot which featured a Native American elder in full regalia on a horse. The second scene was of litter blowing across the land. The final scene was again of the Native American elder with tears rolling down his

cheeks. Back in those days a person driving could get a ticket if they didn’t have a litter bag in their car. We were taught not to litter in school. Litter comes in many forms, colors, and sizes. We have to look at it, we waste our resources when we pay people to pick it up, it can chemically harm our environment and other living things, and we’re

even affected by it energetically. How do you feel when walking into a tidy bathroom versus walking into a bathroom strewn with paper towels? Cigarette butts/filters are by far the number one littered item in the United States and

the world today. Depending on the conditions of the location, cigarette butts can take from 18 months to 10 years to decompose. Cigarette filters are full of toxins whose chemicals leach into the ground and waterways, damaging living organisms that come in contact with them. Most filters are discarded with bits of tobacco still attached causing nicotine to further pollute our environment. The following are some ideas and practices we might follow toward decreasing our litter problem: 1. We can decide to never litter again. That means that we will stick any litter in our pockets and purses until we’re able to transfer it to a garbage can. This may include planning ahead and being willing to carry a bag or backpack if our potential litter may be larger than we can otherwise handle. 2.We can decide to keep and use litter bags in our cars, trucks, boats, and airplanes. Otherwise, litter dropped on the floor can easily be kicked out accidentally, like when we’re departing from our Learjet! 3. Smokers can carry on them or in their purse small fireproof jars or tins within which to dispose of their cigarette butts until they can find a garbage can (I’m secretly hoping that someone will see the value in providing this service, get a patent, and become

a billionaire). Otherwise, smokers can make sure their cigarette is entirely out before disposing of it in any normal garbage can, if no waste receptacle specifically for cigarettes is available. 4. There might be a Nobel Prize in it for someone able to invent an automatic cremation feature for cigarettes, etc. 5. For the ones who will continue to litter we can build shelves. The litter won’t have the same negative energetic effect when it’s not on the ground. Also, collecting it will be much easier. 6. We can add to our lifestyle times when we pick up garbage. Yes, even cigarette butts. It is easily done while sitting on a pad, possibly using a wire rake, if needed. 7. We can make collecting litter a meditation we do alone, or a fun thing to share with others. Suggest it for those gatherings that you know are going to be “long” days. If no one else wants to do it you can leave early saying “I have to go as I haven’t yet met my quota today.” 8. Picking up litter is a fun thing to do with kids. My son and I years ago found a murky pond with lots of sunken pop cans and bottles and we used long sticks to fish out the “treasures.” He told me afterwards that it was one of the

Paul Timo says that when it comes to litter, we can all make a huge difference, even if it at the rate of one bus stop at a time.

The Great River of Life

By Mary O’Malley

Imagine walking through the woods lost in thought, when suddenly and very faintly you begin to hear the sounds of running water. The sound touches you like music. It calls to you. Then imagine coming out of the trees and finding yourself standing on the banks of a river that is cascading over moss-covered boulders. If you are like me, the image of that nourishes you to your core.
