INTRODUCTIONEarthen dams are used for the storage of water

for irrigation. These dams have been built since earliest times.

For the design of earthen dams the foundation conditions & materials of construction are thoroughly investigated.

A purely homogeneous type earth dam is composed of single kind of material. In these dams internal drainage system is provided in the form of horizontal filter drain.

Page 7: New Tank Project

NECESSITYExisting bund is inadequate to store water

for irrigation and domestic use. Hence it is planned to propose a new bund to fulfill the present and the future requirement of water.

The site selected for the new bund has a greater capacity of storing water compared to the existing one.

Page 8: New Tank Project

SELECTION OF SITE FOR EARTHEN BUNDWater storage should be largest for

minimum possible height and length.Good foundation should be available at the

site.Materials of construction should be

available at the site or near to it.It should be accessible in all seasons. The overall cost of construction and

maintenance should be taken into consideration.

SURVEY WORKThe survey work was conducted for knowing

the reservoir capacity and to design the earthen bund.

The RL of the various points were determined by using total station.

Capacity contours are drawn to know the capacity of reservoir.

Block contouring was done along the length and the width.

Page 10: New Tank Project

The initial point was fixed considering the permanent objects at site surroundings, taking bearings and respective distances.

The chainages are then drawn along the length of the bund.

The centre line of the bund is established by using Theodolite.

The levels were then noted using dumpy level and levelling staff.

ContourA contour is an imaginary line on the ground

joining points of equal elevation. The vertical distance between any two

consecutive contours is called contour interval.

The contour interval is kept constant for a contour plan, otherwise he general appearance of the map will be misleading.

The points are surveyed and represented on the map in the form of contours

Page 12: New Tank Project

CALCULATION OF RESERVOIR CAPACITYThe area at the dam site is surveyed in detail

and a contour plan is prepared. The contour plan is prepared by using Auto

plotter by specifying the lowest and highest RL and the contour interval.

The area of each contour is determined by digitalizing the contours in AUTOCAD, further from which the total area of reservoir is determined.

Page 13: New Tank Project

The contour plan indicates the water spread corresponding to the reservoir elevation and enables us to determine the area under submergence.

The reservoir capacity or the volume of storage corresponding to given water level in reservoir may be calculated by trapezoidal or prismoidal formula.

If A1,A2,A3….,An are the areas enclosed by various contours and h is contour interval, the reservoir capacity or storage volume V is given by

V=∑h/2(A1+A2) by trapezoidal formulaV= ∑h/3(A1+4A2+A3) by prismoidal formula
