ANZAC Day is an annual day of remembrance, a military funeral, of Australia and New Zealand’s in-volvement in the Great War, and particularly the Gallipoli Campaign that began on April 25, 1915. ANZAC is the acronym for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. Gallipoli was the first major battle our soldiers were involved in overseas.

Of the more than 130,000 casualties during the Gal-lipoli Campaign, 8,709 were Australian and 2,721 were New Zealanders. Over 25,000 returned to the two countries wounded.

ANZAC Day is always commemorated on April 25 (although some states allocate a replacement pub-lic holiday if it occurs on a weekend) and is a day of national remembrance and pride. From the tini-est towns to the largest cities, the day begins with a dawn service that, in it’s simplest form, includes the presence of a chaplain and veteran soldiers. After words of remembrance, a period of silence is fol-lowed by a lone bugler playing the Last Post and the Reveille, the symbols of the order to ‘stand to’ before dawn on the battlefield. Families, locals and friends also often attend.

A second ceremony occurs in most places mid-morning that is a parade of veterans, armed forc-es, military and non-military volunteers, cadets and community groups as well as dignitaries. The motto of ANZAC Day is ‘Lest We Forget’.

On a social level, ANZAC Day is the only day most states allow a gambling game called ‘two-up’. Tra-ditionally, shops stay closed until 1pm, and pubs and hotels open at noon. Sadly, the extreme consump-tion of alcohol is a feature of ANZAC Day for some people.

For most Australians and New Zealanders, ANZAC Day is a day of important national remembrance of those who gave their lives so ‘we could be free’.
