Julie and her two children ages 8 and 14 havemoved around many times throughout theirlives. Most recently, the family foundthemselves living out of a small motel roomfor over seven months. When Julie could nolonger afford the cost of the motel and wasfacing eviction, she reached out to NUMASHaus for help.

Within a month of arriving at NUMAS Haus,the family was able to secure a threebedroom apartment. Things quickly fell intoplace, and NUMAS Haus helped the familymove in to their new apartment and gainaccess to resources to help furnish theapartment.

It was quickly discovered that Julie wasstruggling in her new housing, most notablythat she had a tendency to hoard items, andthat she would need additional assistanceand resources in order to provide a safe andhealthy environment for her and her family.This a perfect example of why our case

management program is so important. If notfor the additional help after leaving NUMASHaus, Julie and her family would very likelyalready be facing eviction once again.

With the help of NUMAS Haus and BrownCounty Human Services, Julie and her familyhave been set up with many valuableresources to help them succeed. Some ofthese resources include mental healthservices for both mom and her children,education services for her children,budgeting and finance skills, organizationskills, scheduling and time managementskills, and so much more!

Julie and her children continue to makeprogress daily, but still have a lot of room togrow. We look forward to continuing to workwith this family, offering education,resources, and encouragement along theway, in order to assist in providing a life-longstable living environment for Julie and herchildren.

NUMAS Haus Transitional Housing

NUMAS Haus is excited and proud toexpand our services to includetransitional housing for families experiencing housing barriers,especially those that are not easy toovercome. Barriers might include someor all of the following: bad credit, poorrental history, or criminal history.Barriers such as these can make it verydifficult or nearly impossible for familiesto find housing, especially with thealready limited availability of affordablehousing.

Our Transitional Housing Program willhelp families experiencing housingbarriers build rental history whileabiding by a lease agreement withNUMAS Haus, and paying rent andutilities as would be required of them inany apartment. The goal is for families tobe able to move into their own housingwithin six months to a year of living inthe transitional housing unit. Just likefamilies that move into their ownhousising

housing after completing the NUMASHaus program, families that are livingin our transitional housing unit willreceive housing case managementfrom the Shelter Coordinator. Housingcase management involves learningbudgeting skills to ensure timelypayments of rent and utilities, learningand improving skills to keep a cleanand safe living environment, learningproper communication skills whencommunicating with landlords andneighbors, and any other skills thefamily may need to succeed.

NUMAS Haus currently has one 3bedroom and 2 full bath trailer to useas transitional housing for our families.Depending on the need and success ofthis program, we hope to eventuallyexpand the program even further.Thank you to all of our donors andsupporters who made this programpossible!

2020: what a year to remember! We allhad to make many adjustments to theway we live our lives and the way wework. Holding our annual fundraisingevent virtually was just one of thesemany changes, but thanks to all of YOU,we had our most successful year yet,raising about $38,000! We are blownaway by the kindness and support ofour donors, especially during suchdifficult times.

Although we couldn't hold ourfundraiser in person, Jason Gray cameto New Ulm, performed around town,allowing us to record him for our event.We are so thankful for his willingness toget creative, even performing outside inthe middle of a Minnesota winter!
