ALL ABOUTTHE A-LISTThe NewsLeader’s A-List has been around for a few years now. In July and August, we again put the call out to readers, in the form of a survey, asking residents to name some of their favourite things in the city. The list

includes everything from restaurants and hair salons to best places to get a deal on a used car or vintage clothes. There are also fun categories like Favourite

Place to Kiss and Make Up or Meet a Mate. Today we’re sharing the results. We’ve also profi led a few residents and asked them to share their thoughts about what makes this city so great. This city is home to fabulous festivals, like Hyack Festival and the Royal City Show & Shine, a growing selection of restaurants and pubs, and absolutely wonderful neighbourhoods. Reading this year’s A-List I was struck by how much this city has to offer. I hope you’ll feel the same.

Q: Where does your love of fashion come from?

I could tell you about the stack of ELLE magazines my sisters had stacked in their bedroom. I used to peruse them because of beautiful models like Elle Macpherson. And then there was my love of New Wave music, bands like Simple Minds, ABC, and, big source, Roxy Music. The way the bands dressed was soulful, suave, and slightly world-weary. But my fi rst infl uence was my father. He cared about his clothes and he started my sartorial education with how to knot a tie, his hand over mine, in front of the bathroom mirror.

Q: You worked for a time at Vancouver’s legendary Modernize Tailors in Chinatown, as an apprentice. Tell us a little about that experience and what you learned.

I learned I loved the tailor’s environment. The sounds, the smell of hot steam off of wool, working with my hands. I also learned tailoring is about

fashion but about fi nding the ideal fi t. A good fi t never goes out of style. I also learned I missed and needed the wisdom and guidance of older Chinese men in my life. That I missed my father. That’s why I dedicated my book to sons who still need their fathers and fathers who still need their sons.

Q: Your book, The Measure of a Man explores your relationship with your father and the nature of the father/son bond. Tell us about that journey, and if you don’t mind, a little about your father, too.

My father died 10 years ago, a month before the September 11th attacks. At the time, I was quite angry at him and I made that common vow many sons make: never to be like my father.

JJ LeeNew Westminster resident JJ Lee writes about menswear and broadcasts a regular fashion column for CBC Radio in Vancouver. This fall, his debut book, a memoir published by McClelland & Stewart, hit the bookstore shelves. The Measure of a Man: The Story of a Father, a Son, and a Suit tells the story of Lee’s efforts to alter his dead father’s last suit. His amateur tailoring project provides a backdrop for his exploration of the history of tailoring and his tumultuous but near-forgotten memories of his father. The book went on sale Sept. 27. To fi nd out more about The Measure of a Man, visit the website, http://jj-lee.com/.

But, now I’m a dad and, heck, I look like him, and I have found myself slowly gravitating to his dressing habits and sense of style. In the book, I begin to refl ect on our estranged relationship but also what I have kept of him inside me. The book is about paternal legacies: what we keep and throw away and what we should forget and what we should not.

Q: Has the experience of writing the book infl uenced your life as a father?

I am extremely aware of how I am now building little blocks of memory in my boys’ brains. They will mostly remember the bad stuff because they always involve strong emotions. So I’m very conscious of our relationship and minimizing the bad and leaving as many good ones as possible. I try very hard to lead, to be a role model even when they’re not around. I feel I’m accountable to them, more so than anyone in the world. If I’m not good for them, I’m not good for anybody. In the end, judge me by them.

Q: What’s your favourite style of suit today? What ARE the most fashionable styles for men’s suits currently?

We are at a very wide open moment in history. Men used to have straight legs and that was it in jeans. Now, a man can have any cut he wants. The trick is to understand which cut works for a particular body and to ignore somewhat the ups and downs of fashion. That said, I love single button suits with no vents and double-breasted suits. The DB is big in fashion right now but I caution any man who would choose to wear one because he thinks it’s more formal or snazzy. I hate snazzy. Or one man topping another. Wear a double-breasted because you like buttons. That’s an honest, pleasure-based reason to like a DB.

Q: What drew you to live in New Westminster?

We came here because of affordability but that was a long time ago. What keeps us here is the school. Great, committed teachers and principals who have seen it all. Our school is very diverse and has lots of people from different incomes and I like that.

Q: What do you like about the city?

I love the small town feel. I know the purveyors by fi rst name in this town. The nice woman at the supermarket knows how to cut our salami (which is thin). It sounds silly but I want to know them and I want them to know me because that’s how communities are built.

Q: What would make New Westminster a more “stylish” place?

I think true style comes from individuality and the recognition of innate qualities. For New Westminster, that means it would be a shame if lots in the city were over consolidated. Small parcel development is what historically has given New Westminster its charm. What does that have to do with style? Well, a small lot, even if it’s developed 10 storeys up, has a small storefront. A small storefront means smaller square footage. Small shops with cheaper rents means business owners can take more risks. More risk means more experimental, hip stores instead of vanilla. New West Cycles on Sixth Street is a perfect example of a skinny store that’s totally hip. This city needs to be small. It can be dense too, but it needs to be small, which is, indeed, beautiful.

Q: Where are your favourite places in New West to walk your dogs?

My favorite places to walk the dogs in New Westminster would have to be in the residential areas that my daycare resides in. I love seeing the smiles on all the children’s faces when I walk by with my pack. There is a children’s daycare that is in the neighbourhood and I walk by there everyday. It is a little challenging, however, as the kids want to come and pet the dogs which I cannot allow, as their parents aren’t there to say it’s okay. There are also many retired couples in the neighbourhood that love seeing the dogs and come out to talk to the dogs and myself. It always puts a huge smile on their faces, which makes me happy as dogs are such a therapeutic thing for people.

Q: What great things does New Westminster offer your average dog?

New West has a lot to offer both people and their dogs. There are many friendly dog areas, such as at the Quay. I don’t go down there much with my pack as it is quite busy, but I do have many clients that live in the Quay area that take their dogs for walks on the weekends. It’s great for socialization for both the dogs and the people.

New Westminster also has many dog parks considering how it’s such a small community—not like some areas of the Lower Mainland where you have to get into a car and drive to one. There is an off leash area within walking distance for most people.

Q: How is New Westminster a dog-friendly city?

We have great pet stores that are owned locally (which I like to promote instead of the big-box chains as they are so much more educated on their products and what to suggest to their clients), such as Van Pet and the beautiful new Bosley’s that just opened up. We also have many great groomers such as Tiffany’s and Hair of the Dog—both on 12th Street, by the way.

Lisa MarieLisa Marie is owner of the Playful Puppy Palace on 12th Street, which is celebrating its fi fth anniversary.

Since moving the vegan store to a bigger location on Columbia Street from Sapperton, she’s also expanded the goods she sells to include footwear, clothes, cosmetics, jewelry and a take-out deli downstairs.

Q: Who inspired you to devote your life to ballet?

My parents. They weren’t dancers professionally, but I come from a musical family. My grandfather was a concert violinist. They used to have musical soirees. When I was four years old, studying dance with Josephine Slater I performed at the Edison Theatre on Columbia Street, and I remember walking home with my Dad after and he said, ‘how did that feel?’ and I said, ‘I really loved it Daddy when the people laughed—and the applause.’

Q: You started teaching dance at 14—how did that come about?

My teacher Ms. Slater felt that I needed more classes and she needed more teachers, so in exchange for more classes she arranged for me to assist in the studio. Two carloads of students used to come to New Westminster from Hammond and they suggested that they would look after me if I went to Hammond and opened a school. I used to get the bus at 6:30 and transfer at Port Coquitlam and

take a bus to Hammond, carrying my record player and a bundle of records. The school was a two-mile walk from the highway.

Q: Tell us about co-founding the Royal City Youth Ballet.

We did a performance of Coppélia and it was very well received and so another lady and I called Donna Fishwick, a well-known piano teacher, and said that it would be very nice to form a youth ballet company. That was 23 years ago. Our fi rst performance was at the Shadbolt Centre, and then theatres from all over asked if we would bring a performance. So we usually do, at Christmas, about 20 to 23 performances of the Nutcracker. In the later years we started going to Medicine Hat.

Dolores KirkwoodChoreographer, singer, dancer, teacher and New West resident Dolores Kirkwood is the owner of the Kirkwood Academy of Performing Arts and the co-founder and artistic director of the Royal City Youth Ballet Company. Her dedication to the performing arts has earned her awards and recognition. The New Westminster Chamber of Commerce named her Citizen of the Year (1994), she was inducted into the B.C. Entertainment Hall of Fame (1998) and she has a star on the Granville Street Walk of Fame. In 2009, she received the Order of British Columbia.

Q: You’ve been awarded the Order of B.C. as well as a star on the Granville Street Walk of Fame. How did you feel?

How can I explain that? It’s most gratifying. The B.C. Hall of Fame is from my professional performing groups. And the Order of B.C. of course was a fabulous award and made me so grateful that I made a dent. It was for my work with children and with the theatre in B.C. It made me feel very fulfi lled that I have done a few things to promote dance.

Q: What did you think of the recent movie Black Swan? Is it representative of today’s ballet world?

Not at all. It was someone’s dramatic idea of what dance is. I was in Europe last year with ballet companies from different countries and we said that the movie had done more harm to ballet than anything else. Purely a dramatization of what he thought was the ballet world.

Q: What is the world of ballet really like?

I know it represents a discipline, a love of music. It’s a way of life. I had so many letters from former dancers, one recently who is going to England to do her doctorate in archaeology and anthropology and she said it all happened because of the discipline she learned in dance. It serves in every

walk of life. I had a student with a law degree who was going to be interviewed by a very large law fi rm. They said, ‘Okay, perform.’ And she wasn’t nervous, but she said, ‘oh I was but the years of ballet taught me to hide it’.

Q: What do you try to express through your choreography?

Whatever the music tells me. I hear a piece of music and I want to express what the music means to me and therefore to my students. I have music at my home at all times, and it’s a background to my life. I listen to all kinds of music, from a good jazz piece to musical theatre.

Q: What are you up to these days?

At the moment we’re into auditions for the Nutcracker. The fi rst performances start at the end of November. Everyone loves the Nutcracker music. We start in Abbotsford and then Surrey, North Vancouver, New Westminster, Maple Ridge and on the Island. We also do shortened versions in many of the seniors’ homes in the Lower Mainland and schools in New Westminster. I take about 10 students and we go into the local schools and we do a little performance and my students teach.
