New Intake Evening Booklet/June 2020

June 2020 Dear Parent/Carer I am delighted that your child will be joining us here at The Grange from September and hope that you have found the virtual transition process of value. We know that it compares less favourably with an actual face-to-face transition and that you will feel that you know the school less well than would normally be the case. I am sure that when we can have your children in school that they will quickly get to know the school and their daily routines. The 2020/21 school year begins for your child on Thursday 3 September, when he/she should report to the Main Hall at 8.45 am. School will finish at the normal time of 3.15 pm. In this booklet, you will find an up-to-date school uniform list, including PE equipment. Yours faithfully

V Murray Headteacher

INTERVIEWS If parents wish to visit the school to speak with a member of staff, it is more convenient to write, email or telephone for an appointment, as they may be teaching, in a meeting or out of school. The school telephone number is 01296 390900. If it is a matter concerning welfare or conduct, parents should, in the first instance, normally contact the student's Form Tutor. With regard to matters concerning the curriculum, in the first instance, please contact the Deputy Headteacher, Miss Brown. Meetings are held throughout the year when parents may meet staff and discuss children’s welfare and progress. SCHOOL OFFICE

This is normally open from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm. The telephone number is 01296 390900. The school office is always willing to help parents with any queries that they may have regarding any matters concerning the school. JOURNEYS TO AND FROM SCHOOL SCHOOL BUS Parents are reminded that they are responsible for the behaviour of their children on a school bus. If a child misbehaves, the matter will be reported to the parents and continual misbehaviour may mean that the child will be stopped from using the school transport. Adequate time is allowed for a child to get from his/her classroom to the bus stop after afternoon school. Normally, no child using school transport will be detained after the end of afternoon school unless prior arrangements have been made with the parents. If a school bus is missed, the child should report to the school Attendance Office at once. The school Attendance Officer will contact home.

CYCLES Students living within reasonable walking distance of the school are asked not to use a cycle as there is only limited accommodation for cycles. Parents must give their consent to their child’s use of a cycle on the Admission Form. If, at a later date, you wish your child to use a cycle, please complete a form which is kept in reception. It should be emphasised that neither the Education Authority, nor the school, can accept any responsibility for any cycle damaged or stolen whilst on the school premises. While it is rare for problems to occur, we do strongly recommend that you take out insurance cover. Students must ensure that they have a secure cycle lock. All students who ride bicycles to school must wear safety helmets. It is also recommended that they wear a high visibility band or vest. Students must show a responsible attitude and be conscious of the need to cycle carefully, especially when entering and leaving the school premises via the vehicle entrance and exit. WALKING Students enter and leave the school premises via the side gates (not the front gates). For safety reasons, students should not be in the school car park at any time. Students must be aware of other road users and keep to the footpath, particularly at the front of the school where there is a lot of traffic. JOURNEYS BY CAR Parents who bring their children to school by car are requested not to enter the school’s car park to drop them off and pick them up because of safety issues. The bus pull-in, on the Wendover Road, is a good ‘drop off’ point if you are travelling out of town. We would like all parents to emphasise to their children that they must inform their parents if they are going to be late home for any reason e.g. playing for school teams.

MEDICAL MATTERS ILLNESS AT SCHOOL If a child is taken ill in school or involved in an accident, the child is taken to the Medical Room where the matter is dealt with by the school’s First Aid Officer. If the matter is serious, then the parent is informed as soon as possible. If the matter is urgent, the First Aid Officer will call for an ambulance, at the same time, informing the parent and asking the parent either to come to school or to go to the hospital. MEDICAL INFORMATION Parents should take care to complete the ‘medical information’ section of the Admission Form in as much detail as possible. Parents are asked to let the First Aid Officer know of any health matters that are of some concern. These will be treated in confidence, although it is essential that staff should be aware of any problems that might concern the child in the classroom, particularly in the laboratory, gymnasium or technology rooms. MEDICATION If a child is on medication, then it is advisable to let First Aid Officer keep this whilst the child is in school. Medicines should be sent into school clearly labelled with the child’s name and form group and with clear directions as to its use. Such medicines are secured in the Medical Room. We are normally willing to accept students in school when under treatment, provided the doctor has recommended that they continue their normal education. This will be subject to a risk assessment being undertaken in exceptional circumstances e.g. students with legs in plaster, or taking special medication but parents are reminded that it is not always possible to make special arrangements for such students. Parents must come to discuss these matters with the First Aid Officer before sending the student back to school.

ATTENDANCE At The Grange School students are expected to: Attend school each day

Register with their Form Tutors in the morning.

AM Registration 8.30 am - 8.50 am

Sign in at the Attendance Office if they arrive in school after 8.50 am

or after 1.55 pm. Late Marks If a student is not in registration at 8.30 am or in class at 1.55 pm, they will be marked as LATE. If a student arrives in school after 9.00 am or after 2.00 pm this will be recorded as ABSENT unless a note is received from a parent/carer explaining the reason for the student being late. Lateness not covered by a note of explanation from parents will result in the students being given detentions. Schools are required by law to record each absence as either AUTHORISED or UNAUTHORISED. Therefore, we ask that you, as parents/carers, work with us by providing absence letters as required. However, please note that only the school can authorise an absence. Doctor/Dental Appointments If such appointments have to be made during school hours, please provide your child with a note for his/her Form Tutor. These absences may then be recorded as AUTHORISED. Students who have reason to go out of school during school hours should sign out/in at the Attendance Office on leaving and returning to school. This enables the school to be aware of the whereabouts of all students.

Page 12: NEW YEAR 7 INTAKE 2020 - 2021...C Ms L Atkinson T3 O Ms J Glover S1 V Ms S Callander B6 E Mr N Hood O1 R Ms V Mathieu L2 5 New Intake Evening Booklet/June 2020 TIMING OF THE SCHOOL

New Intake Evening Booklet/June 2020

Sickness If your child is absent from school due to illness, please ring the school on the first day of sickness AND provide a note for his/her Form Tutor on his/her return to school. Alternatively, you may send an email to [email protected]. These absences will then be recorded as AUTHORISED. If no note is received, then the absence remains UNAUTHORISED. A letter will then be sent home requesting a reason for the absence. If no reply is received, the absence will remain UNAUTHORISED. These absences are shown on school profiles and all references. Family Holidays There is a clear directive from the Department for Children, Schools & Families that parents/carers should not normally take children on holiday in term time (Circular 10/99). Only requests based on compassionate grounds will be considered for authorisation. In such circumstances, an application should be made on a form obtainable from the Attendance Officer. Cause for Concern If you are at all concerned about your child’s attendance, you should, in the first instance, contact his/her Form Tutor. The school will contact you if:

Your child’s attendance rate falls below an unacceptable level. Your child is late for school regularly. A regular pattern appears in your child’s absences. Letters from you are not received explaining absences.

If you have any queries regarding these guidelines, please contact the school either by: Phone: (01296) 390900 (please ask for the Attendance Officer) Fax: (01296) 390991 Email: [email protected]

‘Having a good education will help to give your child the best possible start in life. If your child is absent for any period,

whether authorised or unauthorised, he or she may miss essential elements of their learning programme.’ DfES

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS If your child has Special Educational Needs and is on the SEND Register, the information will have been transferred from their previous school to The Grange School. Their needs will continue to be supported as necessary. If your child needs support with English as an additional language, this information should have been transferred from their previous school and their needs will be supported as necessary. If you have any special concerns, please contact the Support for Learning Department. HOMEWORK Students are expected to do regular homework. An item of homework may sometimes extend over a period of two weeks. In such instances, students have a tendency to leave work to the last moment when they find there is insufficient time to do the work satisfactorily. Parents are asked to ensure that students spread their homework evenly. Subject homework is posted online using the ‘Show My Homework’ website. All students are able to log on and view their homework calendar. Parents are also able to view homework which has been set. Homework is set by the class teacher on a regular basis when it is appropriate to do so. In Key stage 3, English, Maths and Languages should have a piece of homework each week. Other subjects which have fewer lessons will set homework at least once per fortnight. Drama and Physical Education are the exceptions to this; they have homework once per half term. If there is an issue regarding homework, parents should contact the Form Tutor in the first instance. Please read the ‘Parents Guide to Homework’ booklet for additional information on how to support your child with homework.

EQUIPMENT Students should have basic equipment with them for all lessons, including a pen (black or blue), green pen, pencil, rubber, ruler, colour pencils, a pencil sharpener, glue, compass, a scientific calculator and a small notebook/diary. In addition to basic equipment, it is desirable for all students to also have dictionaries. These may all be purchased from the school library. Students are asked to carry a small notebook or diary. Students should also have a bag that is capable of carrying their school equipment as well as their books for the school day. LIBRARY The Grange School Library is open daily for the loan and exchange of books and for the use of reference material. A wide range of books are available for both school work and recreational use. Computer and Internet facilities may be used to support school work. Stationery, calculators, dictionaries and atlases may also be purchased from the Library. Students join the Library on entry into Year 7. By joining, they accept responsibility for any books they borrow and must return them in the same condition in which they were borrowed by the date they are due back on. It is expected that lost or damaged books should be paid for by the student concerned. REPORTS Parents/Carers will receive a printed report on their child’s progress, behaviour and homework three times a year. In addition, a Parent’s Evening is offered once per year for face to face discussions on attainment and progress. Parents may obtain a verbal report on the progress of their child either over the whole curriculum or in any particular subject at any time during the year, by making an appointment to see the Subject Leader.

SCHOOL MEALS During the lunch period, meals are available in the school Dining Hall. There are two alternatives for lunch as all Year 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11 students must stay on the school site:- (i) eat a school meal in the Dining Hall (ii) eat a packed lunch provided by home and consumed in the

Assembly Hall, or other specified area. If a parent wishes their child to return home at lunchtime, they should contact the Year Team Leader. Midday provision of meals is given free of charge, only to students whose parents/carers are in receipt of the following: Income Support (IS) Income Based (not contribution-based) Job Seeker's Allowance

(IBJSA)

The guarantee element of the State Pension Credit Income-related employment and support allowance or Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 Universal Credit with an annual net earned income of no more than

£7,400. Child Tax Credit (with No Working Tax Credit) with an annual

income of no more than £16,190)

Children who receive IS or IBJSA in their own right are also entitled to receive free school meals. Where a parent is entitled to Child Tax Credit and also Working Tax Credit during the four week period immediately after their employment ceases, or after they start to work less than 16 hours per week, their children are entitled to free school meals. Please contact the Finance Office for a claim form.

LUNCH BREAK During the first two weeks of the Autumn Term, Year 7 students will go to lunch 10 minutes earlier than the rest of the school. This will give students time to adjust to the school Dining Hall arrangements. BUDDIES To support students when they join The Grange School, each form group has two Year 10 students assigned to it as ‘Buddies’. The purpose of the Buddies is to help students to settle into life at The Grange School. Buddies are a friendly face to show students around, answer any questions they may have and be a point of contact for students during the school day. INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY All students who attend The Grange School have access to the Internet to help them with their studies. Internet access is protected by a “firewall” to prevent students from accessing, viewing and downloading unsuitable material. All students are also allocated a personal email address, which is accessible from both school and home which they can use to send and receive emails to help them with their studies. To enable student’s access to the Internet and their personal email account, we have introduced an Internet Code of Practice. Students and their parents should read and agree to this before parents consent to their children being given access on the Admission Form. This contract agrees appropriate conduct whilst using the school Internet and email facilities.

STUDENTS’ ICT CODE OF PRACTICE

I will only use the Internet/computers when supervised by a teacher or adult.

I will never tell anyone I meet on the Internet my home address, my

telephone number or my school’s name unless my teacher gives me permission.

I have been allocated a password for my user space and Internet/email access, which I will not share with anyone, even my best friend.

I will not use Internet chat rooms or Messaging Software. I will always tell my teacher if I see bad language or distasteful things

while I am online. I will not look for bad language or distasteful things while I am online.

I know that the school will check the sites I have visited! I understand that I will not be able to use the Internet if I deliberately

look for, or find unsuitable material. I understand that information on the Internet may not always be

reliable and sources may need checking. Web sites may be sponsored by advertisers and therefore be biased.

When using E-mail, I will only send sensible necessary mails to people I know.

I am aware that any mail I send can be traced back to me and that

regular checks will be made on usage. I am aware that I have been allocated limited user space on the

network and am responsible for maintaining this space. I will tidy up my user space regularly and delete redundant files.

I am aware I have been allocated limited printer credits and I will use

these for appropriate school work.

PERSONAL PROPERTY Students are asked to ensure that all articles of clothing and equipment are clearly marked with their full names. It must be emphasised that neither the Education Authority nor the school can accept any responsibility for the personal property of students damaged or stolen on school premises. This is not covered by any County Insurance Policy. Students should always take their personal belongings with them when they change lessons. They need an appropriate school bag (see uniform list). Movement between lessons is kept to a minimum. During Physical Education lessons, watches, keys, etc. should be handed to the PE teacher and not left in students’ clothing. It is unreasonable to expect staff to spend possibly many hours of their time searching for students’ valuables. If students have to bring valuables into school (INCLUDING LARGE SUMS OF MONEY), they should hand them into the School Office. We are currently reviewing our mobile phone policy for September 2019. ACTIVITIES OUT OF SCHOOL Students are encouraged to take part in activities outside the normal school curriculum. As a number of students travel to school on school buses, many activities take place during the lunch break. Students interested in music may join the choir or the orchestra of which there are various sections - brass, wind, string and percussion. The Subject Leader of the Music Department will be pleased to see students who wish to join the choir or learn to play a musical instrument for which there will be an annual charge. Please contact the Finance Office for an application form.

The school has a large Drama Department. Drama is part of the normal curriculum for each child but many additional activities go on outside the normal timetable. There are many sporting activities, which occur, including regular school matches in football, netball, basketball, hockey etc. ICT rooms and the Library are available at lunch-times for all students to continue with, and research homework they may have. Students are often invited to participate in activities that involve some form of public service. It may be clearing the litter in the surrounding streets, helping senior citizens, making things for nursery schools, hospitals, or charitable events. SCHOOL VISITS AND SCHOOL JOURNEYS The Grange School believes that not all education takes place in school and that sometimes the countryside or museum makes an alternative classroom. Students go on visits for fieldwork in relation to Geography, History, Art, Science and other subjects in the curriculum. As the amount of money available to the school for such visits is very limited, parents are sometimes invited to make a voluntary contribution towards the cost of the visit or, if the student is to be away from school for more than one day, towards the cost of the board and lodging. No student, however, is ever barred from going on a field trip during school hours because of any difficulty in finding the cost. There are curriculum focused residential visits to Europe (France/Spain) for students in Years 9 and 10 each year. Parents and students will be given at least ten months’ notice to ease payments.

BEHAVIOUR POLICY

The Grange School believes that it is important to create an environment in which staff can teach and students can learn. It is based on the clear values of respect, fairness and inclusion. The school values good behaviour and seeks to create systems, which will minimise and appropriately address all forms of unacceptable behaviour. AIMS

To improve the way in which the school community works together to solve problems and to strengthen the partnership between home and school.

To encourage a caring and orderly environment. To encourage a sense of responsibility and self-discipline in every

student. Good behaviour is essential so that the orderly environment for teaching and learning can exist. All students have the following basic rights:

1. To be taught and learn without distraction or disruption. 2. To respect and fair treatment (this includes their property as well

as themselves). 3. To feel safe at school.

At The Grange School staff and students have the right to:

Be treated with dignity and respect. Be listened to. Be able to explain their feelings. Be treated politely. Receive recognition for their achievements.

In having such rights, it is important that all members of the school community are responsible in:

Being kind, caring, sharing, not hurting another by what they do or what they say.

Being polite. Protecting the most vulnerable. Respecting other students. Respecting adults. Earning trust. Praising each other. Taking responsibility for own actions and belongings.

In fulfilling our rights and responsibilities, there are expectations made of the School, Parents and Students. EXPECTATIONS OF THE SCHOOL ARE TO:

Respect each student as an individual. Provide a safe school environment. Provide a full, balanced and appropriate curriculum. Educate each student to fulfil his/her potential. Set regular and

relevant homework and ensure that it is marked. Provide information about student progress and offer regular

meetings with parents. Ensure that students are prepared and entered for appropriate

examinations, provided they have satisfactorily completed the course.

EXPECTATIONS OF PARENTS ARE TO:

Encourage a positive attitude to school and a high standard of behaviour in accordance with school policy.

Ensure your son/daughter attends school regularly and punctually, with appropriate uniform and equipment.

Have due regard for the Home-School Agreement. Ensure that the school is notified of any absence by telephone and

that this is confirmed in writing when the student returns. Alternatively, you may email the school at [email protected].

To monitor progress, attitude and behaviour in conjunction with the school.

To inform the school about any issues or concerns that might affect performance at school.

EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS ARE TO:

Work to their full potential. Be polite and co-operative at all times. Complete and submit homework and other assignments on time. Dress in the appropriate uniform. Attend school regularly and punctually. Treat all facilities and equipment carefully and with respect.

Move about the school in an orderly and quiet manner. Treat all members of the school community with respect. Behave in accordance with the school behaviour policy.

Drugs, weapons, alcohol and smoking are strictly forbidden on the school site. EXPECTATION IN THE CLASSROOM The Grange School has six Classroom Ground Rules which are explained and understood by all students:

1. Work hard, taking pride in what you do. 2. Allow others to do their work. 3. Follow staff instructions. 4. Treat other people with respect. 5. Bring correct equipment. 6. Be on time.

The Classroom Rules concerning the expected behaviour for all students in lessons are posted clearly in all classrooms. They are also discussed with students in lessons and tutor time. REWARDING POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR It is important to acknowledge good achievement, positive behaviour and regular attendance.

All staff are expected to praise students with frequent use of encouraging language in lessons and around school so that positive behaviour and regular attendance is recognised.

Achievement Points are awarded to students for effort in the curriculum, in behaviour and in acts of citizenship for the whole school.

On achieving certain levels, students receive a certificate presented in assembly.

Achievement Points can be used to allow students to participate in visits and to receive additional privileges.

Successes, whether achieved in school or out, will be recognised in assemblies.

Display is an important way in which the school recognises success. Displays of work are used to encourage students who have made real effort. Commendation and Year notice boards, in various areas of the school, celebrate students’ successes in a number of disciplines.

Prizes are awarded at the end of each year. Prizes for attainment, attendance, effort and service to the school are awarded, as well as subject specific prizes.

The School Newsletter, published monthly, includes reports of positive achievements throughout the school.

Efforts are made to create a climate where praise and encouragement outweighs sanctions and punishments. SANCTIONS Effective sanctions are designed to promote positive behaviour and attendance. At all times, it should be made clear to the student that it is his/her behaviour that is unacceptable, not the person. Escalation to severe sanctions at an early stage should be avoided; these should be reserved for the most serious or persistent behaviour. Whole group sanctions that punish the innocent as well as the guilty should be avoided. Individual circumstances should be taken into account. Unacceptable behaviour or poor attitude could result in one of the following sanctions:

Spoken rebuke.

Loss of privilege or free time (lunch time or after school detention).

Being placed on report. Letter sent home.

Discussion between parents, student and members of staff. Withdrawal from normal lessons. Reprimand from a senior member of staff. Attendance at school during Training Days. Temporary or permanent exclusion.

All members of staff are encouraged, where possible, to give students a choice when they are engaging in undesirable behaviour; they can do as the teacher asks and comply with the school rules, or face the consequence, a sanction. Should the incident be sufficiently serious, and/or persistent, then the school’s Staged Response should be implemented. The need for consistency of approach among staff is very important. Sanctions will only work if all staff adopt one set of standards and rules and ensure that these apply to all students. Concerns are used to record work or behaviour issues that have an impact on the learning of the student or their peers, as well as straightforward rule breaking. The school will monitor concerns and support students in their learning when patterns of behaviour emerge. DETENTIONS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY Students may be detained during their breaks or lunchtimes, with the proviso that time is allowed for them to eat lunch and visit the toilet. Students may be detained after school by members of staff for up to 60 minutes. Parents/Carers will be notified of any after school detentions by a slip brought home by the student at least 24 hours before the detention is to be served. Where a student persistently fails to follow schools expectations, there is the provision of a Senior Leadership 90 minutes detention on a Wednesday or Friday after school. Parents/Carers will be notified of this time by email and or letter.

Although not an exhaustive list, the following behaviours are inconsistent with the expectations of the school:

Lack of punctuality Truancy Refusal to work Disobedience to staff Disrespect for property Malicious damage

Theft Bullying Violence Physical, verbal, racist abuse The introduction or use of tobacco, alcohol or illicit drugs The introduction of knives or other dangerous implements

There are occasions when the Headteacher will make determinations about behaviour that is not only detrimental to the interests of the school but to the character, spirit and attitudes of the school. Students will be expected to behave in a disciplined and orderly manner that not only secures their safety but enables them to learn. When behaviour is inappropriate, staff use a staged approach to managing behaviour which is not harsh and allows students to make choices about their behaviour. Classroom teachers use a variety of strategies and sanctions to modify behaviour that inhibits both the student and other students’ learning. If strategies used in the classroom are not successful and the student is not compliant, then it will be necessary to remove student(s) from the lesson in order that other students can continue to learn in a calm and orderly environment. Students who persist to undermine good order and discipline in specific subjects, will be referred to the Subject Leader and/or Year Team Leader who will use a variety of strategies to encourage behaviour that is appropriate for learning to take place. At times, students will persist in undermining good order and discipline by choosing to be disruptive or even behave in a manner that is deemed dangerous to students or staff. If this is the case, staff will use senior

staff support. When students are sent to senior staff, reconciliation is expected at the end of the school day between the teacher and student. Depending on the nature of the behaviour that resulted in the student being sent to a senior member of staff, they will determine if a sanction is required. It is permissible for a student to be given permission by the Headteacher, or person authorised by the Headteacher, to leave the school premises briefly to remedy breaches of school’s rules on appearance or uniform, where this can be done quickly and easily; this should be for no longer than is necessary to remedy the breach. This is not an exclusion but an authorised absence. However, if the student continues to breach uniform rules in such a way as to be sent home to avoid school, the student’s absence may be counted as unauthorised absence. In all cases, the parent must be notified and the absence should be recorded. Where breaches of school uniform rules or rules of appearance (for example relating to jewellery, body piercing, hairstyles etc.) are persistent and in open defiance of such rules, it would be appropriate for the Headteacher to exclude. The Headteacher will take the decision to exclude a student in response to a serious breach of the school’s behaviour policy or in allowing the student to remain in school would seriously harm the education or welfare of the student or others in the school. Permanent exclusion is not a decision that is taken lightly. It is a serious decision and will normally be the final step in a process for dealing with breaches of discipline. The school will seek to use a range of strategies to manage indiscipline. However, there are exceptional circumstances where, in the Headteacher’s judgment, it is appropriate to permanently exclude a student for a first or ‘one off’ offence. Such circumstances might include:

(a) Serious actual or threatened violence against another student or a member of staff

(b) Sexual abuse or assault (c) Supplying an illegal drug

Page 31: NEW YEAR 7 INTAKE 2020 - 2021...C Ms L Atkinson T3 O Ms J Glover S1 V Ms S Callander B6 E Mr N Hood O1 R Ms V Mathieu L2 5 New Intake Evening Booklet/June 2020 TIMING OF THE SCHOOL

30

New Intake Evening Booklet/June 2020

(d) Carrying an offensive weapon Serious offences affect the discipline and well-being of the school community and in cases where a Head Teacher has permanently excluded a student for:

(a) One of the above offences; or (b) Persistent and defiant misbehaviour including bullying (which

include racist or homophobic bullying) or repeated possession and/or use of an illegal drug on school premises

The Secretary of State would not normally expect the governors’ Discipline Committee or an Independent Appeal panel to reinstate the student. The Secretary of States guidance also states that in exceptional cases – usually where further evidence has come to light – a fixed period exclusion may be extended or converted to a permanent exclusion. In such cases, the Headteacher must write again to the parents explaining the reasons for the change. The Headteacher may choose to withdraw an exclusion that has not yet been reviewed by the Discipline Committee. BEHAVIOUR OUTSIDE SCHOOL Students’ behaviour outside school on school business – for example, on school visits, away sports fixtures, or work experience placements – is subject to the school’s behaviour policy. Poor behaviour in these circumstances should be dealt with as if it had taken place in school. For behaviour outside school, but not on school business, the Headteacher may exclude a student if there is a clear link between behaviour and maintaining good behaviour and discipline among the student body as a whole. This will be behaviour in the immediate vicinity of the school or on a journey to and from school can, for example, be grounds for exclusion. BULLYING Bullying is aggressive or insulting behaviour by an individual or group that is often repeated over a period of time that intentionally hurts or harms. It is potentially destructive to the lives of young people and contrary to the ethos of The Grange School.

Page 32: NEW YEAR 7 INTAKE 2020 - 2021...C Ms L Atkinson T3 O Ms J Glover S1 V Ms S Callander B6 E Mr N Hood O1 R Ms V Mathieu L2 5 New Intake Evening Booklet/June 2020 TIMING OF THE SCHOOL

Bullying can take many forms but the three main types are:

Physical – hitting, kicking, taking belongings Verbal – name calling, insulting, making offensive remarks Indirect – spreading nasty stories about someone, exclusion from

social groups, being made the subject of malicious rumours, sending malicious e-mails/text messages on mobile phones or social networking sties.

This list is not exhaustive but gives an idea of the many types of bullying behaviours. Bullying alongside other forms of harassment can make students’ lives unhappy and adversely affect their learning. Although some students can shrug bullying off, bullying can produce feelings of powerlessness and isolation from others, it can undermine self-esteem and can sometimes convince victims that they are at fault. Bullying can affect attitudes to and performance in school. When bullying is detected, or the school is informed of bullying taking place, the situation will be thoroughly investigated and strategies put in place to ensure that it stops. The Grange School will not tolerate bullying and will support not only the victim but the perpetrator of bullying in modifying their behaviour. Parents will be informed of incidents of bullying and kept up to date of the situation. In cases where bullying continues, despite the intervention by the school, disciplinary action will be taken against the bully. RACIST INCIDENTS The Grange School aims to build a community based on mutual respect and understanding. The school is an ethnically and culturally diverse community, where nearly 31% of students are from ethnic minorities, and many have English as an additional language. The school recognises that all members of its community, students, parents and staff, of which ever racial group or background, have the right to be treated with equal respect.

Racism includes all practices and procedures that discriminate against people because of their race, colour, culture, nationality, and national or ethnic origins including religion and language. Racist incidents in school are those which are perceived to be racist by the victim or any other person. Racist incidents will be investigated by the school and can take numerous forms:

Verbal abuse and threatening behaviour – derogatory name-calling, insults, racist jokes, threats, racist language

Racist comments – racist comments in the course of lessons, ridicule of an individual’s cultural differences e.g. food, music, dress, language

Physical assault – because of their colour, race or ethnicity. Damage to property – racially motivated Racist graffiti Discriminatory behaviour – refusal to co-operate with others due

to their ethnic origin Incitement to behave in a racist manner – provocative behaviour

such as wearing racist badges or insignia, attempts to recruit other students to racist organisations and groups, bringing racist materials into school, use of ICT resources to distribute racist materials.

Racism is unacceptable and will not be tolerated at The Grange School. Perpetrators of racist incidents will be disciplined in accordance with school sanctions depending on the severity of the incident. Issues of race and racism are taught in a structured and progressive way to all students through the schools PSHCE curriculum. Students are reminded in assemblies of the school’s policy on racist incidents and the likely consequence of such behaviour. When racist incidents are witnessed or alleged, students, staff and parents are advised and urged to notify the appropriate Year Team leader or member of the Senior Leadership Team. Parents of both the victim and the perpetrator will be notified that a racist incident has occurred and the incident recorded accordingly.

DRUGS RELATED INCIDENTS The Grange School has a duty of care for the education, safety and well-being of all its students. When students become involved in the supplying, receiving, possession or use of drugs within the jurisdiction of the school, it is clear that there is an equal duty of care and responsibility for the position of all students enrolled at the school. Drugs Education is an integral part of the school’s PSHCE curriculum and is a well-developed programme which is taught to Years 7-13. The programme emphasis is on decision-making skills as well as being information giving. The use of tobacco and alcohol are prohibited at all times in and around the vicinity of the school. The use of tobacco and/or alcohol will result in the disciplining of students depending on the persistence and severity of the behaviour. Drugs related incidents also include illegal drugs and/or misuse of prescription, non-prescription drugs or volatile substances i.e. those giving off a gas or vapour, which can be inhaled (this includes aerosols). No drug or volatile substance should be brought onto the school premises without the school’s knowledge and approval. This approval must be sought from the Headteacher or First Aid Officer (in the case of medication) and will only be given following a written request from a parent. The Grange School in its duty of care, will protect its students from the dangers of an illicit drug culture. There is no reason why any student should come into contact with drugs whilst at school. The Grange School will act firmly in incidents related to drugs. The policy of the school is explicit. Students who are involved in:

dealing, i.e. the supply, exchange or receipt of drugs will lead to permanent exclusion;

the use of illegal drugs, or

possession of illegal drugs, or the misuse of prescription, non-prescription or volatile substances

Page 35: NEW YEAR 7 INTAKE 2020 - 2021...C Ms L Atkinson T3 O Ms J Glover S1 V Ms S Callander B6 E Mr N Hood O1 R Ms V Mathieu L2 5 New Intake Evening Booklet/June 2020 TIMING OF THE SCHOOL

will normally lead to permanent exclusion, depending upon the level of involvement. The possession of:

prescription drugs (without the knowledge of the school) non-prescription drugs (without the knowledge of the school) volatile substances (without the knowledge of the school)

could lead to permanent exclusion. Students are reminded in assemblies of the school’s policy on drug incidents and the likely consequence of such behaviour. All members of the school community have a duty to inform members of the Senior Leadership Team if they suspect that drugs are present or are being used at school. When an incident has occurred or there is reasonable suspicion that an incident has taken place, the school will notify parents as soon as possible. Relevant staff members will discuss which, if any, agencies outside of school to consult or inform: Education Welfare Office, Community Drug Agencies, Police School Liaison Officer, Health Authority personnel. The police will be informed in all cases where reasonable suspicion of possession or use of illegal substances has taken place. The school will regularly provide students and parents with information about drug prevention/harm. The school will periodically provide information evenings to parents, regarding up-to-date information and issues related to drugs.
