40th Anniversary Award: Mary Brusoe
Mary receives her award from Past President Jeff Johnson. Mary is holding one of the
early signs that she designed. They are still seen on our trail system!
At the 2015 Educational Forum, the 40th Anniversary
Award was presented to a pioneer of New York Snow-
mobiling, Mary Brusoe. Mary was instrumental in get-
ting the New York Snowmobile Coordinating Group
organized. She wore many hats during her tenure be-
tween September 1981 and and 2003. Her role has been
characterized as “the glue that held everything to-
gether”.
The award was accepted at the Forum on Mary’s behalf
by Past President Jeff Johnson.

Basic membership to increase!
There is no doubt that this winter was the best in several years. It got cold, it snowed and it stayed cold.
From the beginning of January through the end of March, most trails were open. While it was a real treat
for the rider, this winter put a real strain on most of the clubs that maintain the snowmobile trail system.
Most clubs ran through the money they had from their trail grant as well as anything they had in their
“snowy” day fund. To add greater strain on the clubs, they can no longer submit major repair bills on their
groomers as an allowable expense for their trail grant. Those repairs must come directly from their bank
accounts.
On April 12, 2015 the delegates who attended the NYSSA Annual Meeting adopted a resolution calling for
the minimum membership fee to go from $25 to $30. Many clubs were already charging this higher
amount. Unfortunately there was no alternative to implementing this modest increase in membership
fees. Eighty percent of the increase will go to the clubs with $1 dollar going to SLEDNY.
This is the first dues increase since 2006.
There had been a discussion regarding increasing the registration fee. Increasing the snowmobile registra-
tions fee paid to NYS DMV was dismissed because it would take a least two seasons to implement and still
result in delays in getting funding to the club. The membership increase represents less than two gallons
of fuel and I hope you understand that it is needed to keep the clubs doing what they do so well: care and
maintain over 10,000 miles of trail.
A Word About SLEDNY
SLEDNY is the not for profit 501(c)(3) charitable arm of NYSSA. The name is derived from Snowmobile
Leadership and Education in NY. At its core SLEDNY is charged with educating both the public as well as
the snowmobile community on safety and the benefits of the sport. SLEDNY can receive tax deductible
charitable gifts as well as donations in any form.
With all our federal and state approvals in place, you will see SLEDNY take a bigger role in many of the
functions traditionally undertaken by NYSSA. This past season SLEDNY was the lead sponsor of the Take a
Friend Snowmobiling project as well as the Educational Forum. In the future, you will see SLEDNY take a
bigger role in trail safety and operator education. SLEDNY has no paid staff but does have the support of
the many volunteers and staff who support NYSSA. NYSSA is the sole member of SLEDNY and the Officers
of NYSSA also serve on the SLEDNY board of directors.
You can see what SLEDNY has been doing by visiting the SLEDNY Facebook page or SLEDNY.org. The
website is still under development but you will get an idea of what the organization is all about.

Charity Auction
The Charity Auction, held throughout the event, raised
$2,700 to be divided between our three Charities of
Choice: Easter Seals, Pink Ribbon Riders, and the USO.
Clubs donate baskets and other items to be auctioned
off, and the entire fundraiser is managed by volunteers
George Couell (Cattaraugus County Director) and
Bob Bach (Events & Promotions Committee Volunteer),
pictured below.
Vendor Bingo (below) Jane Chaddock, our roving photographer and Genesee
County District Director, coordinated the Vendor Bingo
game. Attendees were given a bingo card, and Vendors
were assigned a number. Visiting each vendor garnered
participants a stamp on their card, and all completed
cards were entered in a drawing to win a luxury stay at
the Tailwater Lodge. Rick Pugh, delegate for Oriska
Snowdrifters, was the lucky winner! Jared Hunt won
second prize, a beanie donated by SledFreak.com!
FUN for EVERYONE!

6th Annual Vintage
Snowmobile Show! The brainchild of Debbie Perkins (who for-
merly coordinated the entire Forum event
nearly single-handedly), the Vintage Sled
Show has become an exciting part of the
Educational Forum. Each year Scott Bullock,
Vintage Sled Guru, and his team of
volunteers coordinate the entries and
judging of this event. This year 13 owners
brought in 39 sleds. Collectively, those 13
owners have a total of 346 vintage sleds back
home!

2015 President’s Award Trooper Christopher G.
Skinner, a member of the
Ridge Riders Snowmobile
Club of Whitney Point,
was presented with the
NYSSA President’s Award
by President Jim Elmore.
Below, Judy Whittaker
accepts the award on be-
half of Trooper Skinner’s
family. Mike Blance,
Broome County Director,
looks on. Below is an
exerpt from President
Elmore’s introduction:
Chris joined the NYS Police want-ing to serve his community and protect the citizens under his watch. While he was a State Trooper, he continued educating youth in the Broome County area on the proper use of a snowmobile.
He love being a teacher for our youth, he wanted to make sure they knew how to operate a snowmobile in a safe man-ner. The club has told me that this person could be considered a Take A Friend pioneer, he always hosted snowmobile parties for all the young kids and their parents in the neighborhood. He would always supply the snowmobiles and gear and helmets to give new people interested in snowmobiling the opportunity to learn. He gave of his own time to pass on the passion of riding he had to the next generation.
This young man is a club volunteer and whenever the club needed some help, he was only a phone call away, much like his job as a State Trooper when someone in the community called and needed help.
In most professions you get up and kiss your loved ones goodbye before you leave for work. As most of us go out the door, our loved ones expect us to be home for dinner that evening.
In some professions, like our proud serving military personal and our firefighting members and law enforcement offi-cers, there is no guarantee they will come home after the end of their watch.
This is the case for this young man, Last year on May 29th, he was killed in the line of duty. He was murdered while protecting the community he wanted to serve and protect. Snowmobile Volunteer, youth safety instructor, NYS Trooper….Chris Skinner was fatally injured on Inter-state 81 near Binghamton, NY. A deranged and cowardly individual struck Chris with his pick-up truck while the Trooper had his back to him.
Chris is missed by his family, his mom and children his
brother and fiancée along with his Police brothers and
sisters and the snowmobile family.

Fun fact: Did you know, the very first ISC was held
in 1969 in Albany, New York?
On June 10-13, 2015, the 47th International Snowmobile Congress will be held in Niagara Falls, NY, at the Niagara Falls
Convention Center. This event is dedicated to the development of strate-gies on our common role with respect to the environment, conservation, access, education and accountability.
That aside, the ISC is just plain fun! Imagine what happens when you get snowmobilers from across the globe together to share their experiences! A whole day will be dedicated to semi-nars about snowmobile trails!
We’ll have a program of educational courses, interspersed with plenty of social activities, and some really cool side trips for you to check out in and around Niagara Falls!
Registration is open at

Your New Vice President - Craig LaPlante Hello, my name is Craig LaPlante, and I am the new Vice President of NYSSA.
Let me start out with some information about myself; I started snowmobiling when I was 6 when my father
purchased our first snowmobile, it was a 1966 Johnson Ski-Horse, I have been involved with the sport since
then.
I currently ride about 500-1000 miles a year when I find time.
I am a NYS Certified Youth Safety Instructor, a NYSSA STEP Instructor, NYSSA Safe Trails Advisor, and a Groomer Operator Instructor. I have been involved with starting the Taberg Trailblazers Snowmobile club in 1987, and first learned of the New York Snowmobile Coordinating Group, and was involved in the organiza-tion with Norris and Mary Brusoe. I moved to the Adirondacks in 1997 and have restarted the Childwold Sno-Packers Club in 1995, it is lo-cated in the Southeast corner of St Lawrence County. I have been involved with the St Lawrence County
Snowmobile Association since 1993, I have served as Alternate Director from 2009 -2011 and am currently the Director for NYSSA for the County association.
Our club currently has approximately 86 miles of trails that we maintain and Groom, 25 of which are on the Adirondack Railroad
Corridor, mostly one way, we have approximately 140 members in our club. I have recently retired from NYSDOT in Region 7 Watertown in which I was a Supervising Equipment Operator Instructor/
Equipment Coordinator for 36 and ½ years. I am currently the President of the Childwold Sno-Packers and have been for the past 2 years. I also have been a Volunteer Firefighter for 37 years. I have been a NYS Certified Fire Investigator for 20 years and have served on the St Lawrence County Fire Investigation Team. I currently serve as Secretary on the St Lawrence County Fire Advisory Board and have been a member since 2002. I am a Firefighter for NASCAR Track Services and serve as a Crew Chief. I have been involved with Emergency responses with the DOT and Fire service such as Ice Storms, Floods, Hurricanes, Snow-
storms, and 911.
With my extensive knowledge of Budgets as I have had to purchase equipment for DOT and the Fire service I feel that I will be a great asset to the organization. You can reach me at [email protected], or 315-854-6719.
