GOOGLE HIM! AWESOME !!

Present

Right now the school will have two underlining projects that all career technical education classes will be focusing on;

1. The Billion Oyster Project

Restoring the oyster reefs by growing our own oysters and placing 1,000,000,000 of them within four reefs in New York Harbor. This will facilitate cleaner water and marine life.

2. The restoration & operation of Schooner Lettie G. Howard

Restoring Lettie G. will provide students with more sail training that isn’t just in New York Harbor but up and down the East Coast. The skills and hands on experience has us doing rigging, engineering, and carpentry.

• Freshmen Year- Students participate in field class.

• Career and Technical Education Programs (CTE)

1. Marine Systems Technology

2. Vessel Operations

3. Professional Diving

4. Ocean Engineering

5. Aquaculture

6. Marine Biology Research

Partnerships

Benefits of collaboration between Schools and Sailing Training

Schooner Pioneer

• Harbor School students participated in Pioneer’s crew training sails. The students acted as passengers to simulate a regular sails for Pioneer’s crew. Students set the sails and participated as a passenger to allow the schooner crew a sense of what sailing would be like for the coming season.

Schooner Pioneer

Pump out and fuel runs?

Sure we can help out!!

This gave students a good understanding of boat operations while helping the Seaport with necessary tasks.

Everyone has to do it….

Schooner Pioneer We can move that……

At the end of Pioneer’s sailing season, Harbor school students helped out the crew by taking down the sails and storing them for the winter.

Restoration & Operation of Lettie G. Howard

One amazing 1893 Gloucester fishing schooner

Lettie G. Howard

• Lettie is used by the South Street Seaport as a Sailing School Vessel.

• She engages students in marine science and marine tech classes.

• She has the ability to extend the range of the Harbor School to outside New York Harbor and can carry 12 students with her.

CTE Working to get Lettie’s Stability letter and Certificate of Inspection back!

Students use what they learn in the classroom and apply it to the preparation for inspections. This is the Ideal platform for students to demonstrate their knowledge and apply it.

Saturday Work Day

Every Saturday students from the New York Harbor School go to the seaport at 0900 to take part of the volunteer work day. A range from 10 to 20 kids show up every week to spend a whole day preparing Lettie to be fit to sail again.
