NEW YORK (AP) — A person familiar with the deal says the New York Jets will sign former Oakland Raiders wide receiver-kick returner Jeremy Ross, pending a physical.

The person spoke Wednesday night to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team did not announce the agreement, which was first reported by ESPN.

Ross was not tendered by Oakland this offseason as a restricted free agent. He has 39 career receptions for 469 yards and two touchdowns, and has also returned a kickoff and a punt for scores.

Ross was signed by New England as an undrafted free agent out of California in 2011. He has also spent time with Indianapolis, Green Bay, Detroit and Baltimore. Ross spent a month on the Ravens' active roster last year before being waived, and signed with Oakland a few days later.

Jets want D’Brickashaw Ferguson to take pay cut (Kimberley Martin) Newsday April 6, 2016

http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/jets-want-d-brickashaw-ferguson-to-take-pay-cut-1.11662469

It was only a matter of time before the Jets asked D’Brickashaw Ferguson to take one for the team.

According to a source, the organization recently talked to the veteran left tackle about taking a pay cut for the upcoming season.

The Freeport native, 32, is due a base salary of $8.625 million, plus several bonuses in 2016 that add up to a $14.1-million cap hit — the highest of any NFL offensive lineman.

It’s unclear how significant a reduction the Jets are asking for, but Ferguson’s age, performance and NFL longevity are the driving factors behind their decision.

It was a foregone conclusion that the team would seek to restructure some of their big-money contracts, but the organization wasn’t in any rush to tinker with Ferguson’s. His workout bonus ($750,000) isn’t due until June and he isn’t scheduled to earn his $1-million roster bonus until the end of training camp.

Though the Jets would stand to save $9.1 million by cutting Ferguson, that outcome is highly unlikely. Ferguson, the fourth overall pick in 2006, has been working out at the team’s facility this offseason and is currently their best option at left tackle.

The Jets, however, did take a look at other offensive lineman during free agency. They brought in former Steelers tackle Kelvin Beachum for a visit last month, but he ultimately signed with Jacksonville.

Jets expected to sign WR Ross. A source confirmed the team plans to sign wide receiver Jeremy Ross, pending a physical. The 28-year-old was a restricted free agent this offseason, but the Oakland Raiders chose not to offer him a tender. Since going undrafted in 2011, Ross has spent time with the Patriots, Colts, Packers, Lions, Ravens and Raiders. He’s served as a backup receiver, kick and punt returner throughout his career.

Newsday April 6, 2016 http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/jets-brandon-marshall-s-friend-tells-court-he-offered-to-take-the-blame-1.11661531

New York Jets star Brandon Marshall’s best friend offered in a text message to “take the blame” for a punch Marshall claims he never threw, according to testimony Wednesday in a Manhattan federal court suit filed by a California woman over a nightclub incident.

The offer came in a text from the friend, college roommate and former Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Michael Sims-Walker, in February as trial approached on the lawsuit by Christen Myles over a 2012 incident at the Marquee nightclub in Manhattan.

“If I need to I’ll take the blame, say I hit her,” according to a deposition of Sims -Walker read to jurors in which he acknowledged the text to Marshall.

In another text to Marshall, he referred to the NYPD’s decision to not file charges over the incident. “Man we got to be smart. We already won the criminal charge,” he wrote.

But Sims-Walker, during the deposition, insisted that Marshall in fact did not hit Myles, and said the texts showed he worried about the risks of trial and was offering to protect his friend.

“Brandon has a lot to lose,” Sims-Walker said. “I don’t. So hey, worst case scenario, say I hit her.”

Myles said an altercation inside the club that did not involve her spilled outside, and Marshall — whose wife had been hurt — punched her in the eye when she got in Sims-Walker’s face.

Both sides are relying on grainy security tapes, which Myles says show Marshall hitting her and Marshall says don’t. Marshall’s lawyer told jurors that Myles may have been hit by someone, but not Marshall, and she accused him because he was an NFL star.

The all-pro wide receiver took the witness stand himself late Wednesday, but discussed only the fight inside the club. His testimony is scheduled to resume on Thursday.

What Giants and Jets fans need to know about new MetLife Stadium turf (James Kratch) NJ Advance Media April 7, 2016

If you follow the Jets on Twitter, you may have seen this tweet recently:

As you can ascertain from the tweet, there is new turf being put down atMetLife Stadium, the home field of the Giants and Jets. But why are they ripping up the fake grass and replacing it with new fake grass? And what happens to all of the old turf?

Here are the answers to those questions, and a few more, after NJ Advance Media spoke to a stadium spokeswoman:

Page 4: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/... · Daily Clips Cont. 5 | P a g e Jets: Ryan Fitzpatrick should—and likely will—sign the contract, but that

4 | P a g e

When did the work start? The installation of the new turf began on February 1, according to Metlife Stadium assistant director of communications and marketing Nicole Fountain, and should wrap up by April 15.

Why the change? This is the first new turf installation since the summer of 2013, prior to Super Bowl XLVIII. Fountain said it is standard to replace turf after three or so years. And the MetLife turf, remember, has twice as many games played on it compared to other NFL stadiums with both the Giants and Jets calling it their home field.

Has the turf changed? Nope, it is still UBU Speed S5-M, in case you want to get some for your basement.

What happens to the old turf? Everything was recycled, Fountain said. The infill will be used on other fields, and the actual turf will be reused on multipurpose surfaces in gyms, batting cages and other similar venues.

2016 NFL Mock Draft: Will Eagles trade up? Giants, Jets go with stars over needs? (Joe Giglio) NJ Advanced Media April 7, 2016

http://www.nj.com/sports/index.ssf/2016/04/2016_nfl_mock_draft_will_eagles_trade_up_giants_je.html#incart_river_index

Three weeks from tonight, NFL fans will be glued to the sport for the first time since Super Bowl 50. When Roger Goodell takes the podium to start the 2016NFL Draft, the future of the league will hang in the balance.

Will major trades shakeup up the first-round order? How many quarterbacks will go in the first round? How high will the top running back go, with memories of Todd Gurley's outstanding rookie year fresh in the mind's of executives around the NFL?

Are the Eagles poised to continue to be the most-talked about team of the offseason, and will an old friend-turned-foe aide in their quest to draft a franchise quarterback within the top 10? If a special talent falls to the Giants, will Jerry Reese act old? And can the Jets balance the present and future with a roster built to win now?

Click on the link below to read my full first-round mock. Below are deeper explanations on why the Eagles, Giants and Jets will go in the direction my mock led them.

With three weeks until the 2016 NFL Draft, let's mock the first round—including splashes by the Eagles, Giants and Jets.

Eagles: Buckle your seat belts. With rumors surrounding Philadelphia's pursuit of a quarterback, there's too much smoke for fire not to be on its way. If the price isn't too prohibitive—and I don't think it will be—the Eagles are going to be the talk of the NFL.

Giants: Jerry Reese is a lot of things to Giants fans, but he's certainly not afraid to be bold if the right player is sitting on the draft board. If the first nine picks in my mock go a certain way, an outside-the-box, bold and potentially rewarding pick will be announced. If you listen to this week's Talk is Cheapepisode, you already heard my idea.

Jets: Ryan Fitzpatrick should—and likely will—sign the contract, but that doesn't mean the Jets' future is secure. It just gives them a good chance to compete for the postseason in 2016. But what about 2017 and beyond? At No. 20, general manager Mike Maccagnan has a chance to secure the most important position for the long term.

Jets' Brandon Marshall to testify again Thursday at his civil trial (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advance Media April 7, 2016

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/04/jets_brandon_marshall_to_testify_thursday_at_his_c.html#incart_river_index

NEW YORK — When the civil trial involving Jets receiver Brandon Marshall continues at the Daniel Patrick Moynihan United States Courthouse here Thursday morning, Marshall will again be on the stand, explaining his version of the events from the early morning of March 11, 2012.

Marshall is being sued by Christin Myles, a woman who alleges he punched her in the left eye that night outside Marquee, a Manhattan nightclub, after a scuffle that took place inside the VIP area continued outside on the sidewalk.

Marshall, whom law enforcement officials decided not to charge soon after the incident, took the stand toward the end of Wednesday's proceedings. But very little ground was covered as he was questioned by Myles' attorney, Joshua Moskovitz, before Judge George B. Daniels adjourned the case until Thursday morning.

Marshall was at Marquee that night along with his wife, Michi, and ex-NFL receiver Mike Sims-Walker and Sims-Walker's then-girlfriend. Marshall did tell the jury "all hell broke loose" after a cup was thrown by some unknown individual, triggering a fight inside the crowded club.

Myles seeks at least $75,000, plus punitive damages, in her jury-trial suit against Marshall in federal court.

Myles testified on Tuesday and Wednesday, and she tearfully told the jury, "I want justice" for having taken a punch that left her with a black eye.

Another stab at all six of the Jets' picks.

The case has a lot of complex parts. What's not in dispute is that Myles did indeed wind up with a black eye, or that Michi Marshall had some of her teeth knocked out and her lip gashed after getting hit with a bottle inside the club.

Grainy security video appeared to show Marshall throwing a punch outside the club, but it's also not clear whether he was just extending his left arm and then his right arm. (Myles claims Marshall hit her with his right hand.) Sims-Walker acknowledged in a deposition that was read into the record that Marshall threw a punch outside on the sidewalk, but it's not clear in the security video whether he was hitting Myles, who claims that's exactly what the video showed in that moment.

Harvey Steinberg, Myles' attorney, exposed a few discrepancies in Myles' description of things during her testimony Wednesday, more of which is detailed here.

In the video, Sims-Walker could be seen throwing a punch inside the club; Myles' then-boyfriend also threw several punches. After Marshall and his group moved outside, Myles and an

Daily Clips Cont.

6 | P a g e

unidentified woman could be seen approaching Sims-Walker, touching off another scrum, though the blurry footage makes it difficult to make heads or tails of what exactly happened next.

In text messages read to the jury Wednesday, Sims-Walker offered to take the fall for Marshall at trial, but Marshall responded to say that wouldn't be necessary. In his deposition, Sims-Walker claimed he and Marshall were attacked and acting in self-defense; Myles acknowledged in court she swung at Sims-Walker, but she made that admission only after the video showed her approaching Sims-Walker and Marshall outside the club.

It's in the seconds after Myles and the other, unknown woman encountered Sims-Walker and Marshall that Marshall threw what appeared to be a punch, possibly at Myles. But, to further complicate matters, a third—also unknown—woman wandered into the frame and clasped her hands together above her head before bringing them down on someone on the sidewalk. It's not clear from the video who the woman struck, or whether Myles may have in fact been the person she struck.

Marshall will no doubt get to explain further. He is expected to be the plaintiff's final witness. Steinberg told the judge he might have two or three more witnesses to call, including possibly a police officer. The case could go to the jury as early as Thursday afternoon or sometime Friday.

Jets talk to D'Brickashaw Ferguson about possible pay cut, source confirms (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advance Media April 6, 2016

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/04/jets_ask_dbrickashaw_ferguson_to_take_pay_cut_per.html#incart_river_index

Barely under the salary cap and still trying to re-sign quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, the Jets have talked to longtime left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson about maybe taking a pay cut, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

That person, who spoke to NJ Advance Media on condition of anonymity, said the Jets had recently approached Ferguson about the possibility that a pay cut might have to happen sometime in the future. The person added that no substantive discussions have yet taken place.

The New York Daily News, which first reported the news of the pay-cut-related conversation between the Jets and Ferguson, also reported Ferguson was approached last week while he was working out at the team facility.

According to the math, a Ferguson pay cut might have to happen soon, if the Jets are going to re-sign Fitzpatrick.

According to NFL Players Association records, the Jets have just $564,647 in salary-cap space. Ferguson has two years remaining on his contract, and he's slated to count $14.1 million against this year's cap, with $10.375 in salary and bonuses due to him in 2016.

They've selected 10 in the last 17 years.

The Jets and Fitzpatrick have been at a contract impasse for several weeks, with Fitzpatrick valuing himself in line with what other NFL starters are getting, and the Jets maintaining he's worth far less.

Page 7: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/... · Daily Clips Cont. 5 | P a g e Jets: Ryan Fitzpatrick should—and likely will—sign the contract, but that

Daily Clips Cont.

7 | P a g e

Ferguson, 32, has been a mainstay for the Jets since being drafted No. 4 overall in 2006. He's played nearly every snap in his 10 NFL seasons, and he was one of the league's best left tackles for years. But Ferguson is not the player he once was.

On March 18, general manager Mike Maccagnan would only discuss Ferguson's future with the Jets in vague terms.

"Right now, D'Brickashaw is under contract and I would say is our thought is that he would be" on the roster, Maccagnan said.

"But like everything else with all players, and I said this early on with free agency this year, it's kind of a fluid free agency for us. We're trying to make decisions that are in the best interest of the organization—both short and long term—so right now I would say he would be on our roster going forward, but we'll see how this thing unfolds."

Ferguson is also the Jets' representative to the NFLPA, which typically frowns upon players tak ing pay cuts.

The Jets had ex-Steelers left tackle Kelvin Beachum—who eventually signed with the Jaguars—in for a visit last month, which fueled speculation that Ferguson might get cut. But the Jets have no experienced backup for Ferguson on the roster.

Jets to sign return man Jeremy Ross, source confirms (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media April 6, 2016

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/04/jets_to_sign_return_man_jeremy_ross_per_report.html#incart_river_index

The Jets are expected to sign wide receiver Jeremy Ross, pending a physical, a league source confirmed Wednesday night.

The news was first reported by ESPN's Adam Caplan.

Ross was a restricted free agent this offseason, but the Raiders did not offer him a tender. He can also return kickoffs and punts, so he fills a need for the Jets.

In February, the Jets signed running back Dri Archer to a reserve/futures contract. He also has potential as a return specialist.

Ross, 28, entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie in 2011. He has been with the Patriots, Colts, Packers, Lions, Ravens, and Raiders. He is 6 feet and 215 pounds.

He has owned the Jets since 2000.

Last season, Ross played for the Ravens and Raiders. His 2015 totals, in 11 games: nine catches, 24 punt returns, and 19 kickoff returns.

The Jets' punt returner last season was receiver Jeremy Kerley, who wascut this offseason. Cornerback Antonio Cromartie (also cut this offseason) and running back Zac Stacy were the Jets' primary kickoff returners in 2015. Stacy was simply a fallback option at that spot. It's not a natural role for him. He is under contract with the Jets through 2016.

Ross has played in 45 career games, with 15 starts. Here are his career numbers:

Page 8: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/... · Daily Clips Cont. 5 | P a g e Jets: Ryan Fitzpatrick should—and likely will—sign the contract, but that

Receiving: 39 catches, 469 yards, two touchdowns

Punt returns: 77 returns, 864 yards (11.2 per return), one touchdown

Kickoff returns: 66 returns, 1,654 yards (25.1 per return), one touchdown

Both of his return touchdowns came in 2013 with the Lions.

These are the other outside free agents the Jets have signed this offseason: running back Khiry Robinson (Saints), running back Matt Forte (Bears), nose tackle Steve McLendon (Steelers), defensive end Jarvis Jenkins (Bears), cornerback Darryl Morris (Texans), and linebacker Bruce Carter (Buccaneers).

Mike Sims-Walker offered to take fall for Jets' Brandon Marshall (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advance Media April 6, 2016

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/04/mike_sims-walker_offered_to_take_fall_for_jets_bra.html#incart_river_index

NEW YORK — Former NFL receiver Mike Sims-Walker, a former college roommate and current close friend of Jets receiver Brandon Marshall, offered to take the fall for Marshall in Marshall's civil trial for allegedly punching a woman, it was revealed in a Manhattan federal courtroom on Wednesday.

Sims-Walker, the former Rams and Jaguars receiver, had a video deposition read into the record in which text messages between him and Marshall were explained to the jury.

"If I need to, I'll take the blame; I'll say I hit her," Sims-Walker acknowledged having texted to Marshall at one point.

Sims-Walker, a former teammates of Marshall's at the University of Central Florida, later admitted Marshall at no point asked him to take the blame. Marshall responded to Sims-Walker's offer by saying it would not be necessary.

"We have the [video] footage," Marshall told Sims-Walker, while declining the offer.

Under questioning from plaintiff Christin Myles' attorney, Joshua Moskovitz, Sims-Walker explained what he meant by saying, "I mean, just in case, worst-case scenario, if this [trial] gets out of hand, I'll take the blame."

Sims-Walker's deposition took up most of the afternoon's proceedings at the Daniel Patrick Moynihan United States Courthouse in lower Manhattan, where Myles is suing Marshall for allegedly punching her in the eye outside a New York City nightclub in March 2012.

The deposition also revealed that Marshall had texted Sims-Walker at one point to say, "Man, we gotta be smart. We already won the criminal charge." Attempts to divine the meaning of that phrase will likely come Thursday, when Marshall is expected to be back on the stand.

Marshall took the stand Wednesday, but Moskovitz's questioning of him only began to establish some basic information before Judge George B. Daniels recessed the case until Thursday morning.

Page 9: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/... · Daily Clips Cont. 5 | P a g e Jets: Ryan Fitzpatrick should—and likely will—sign the contract, but that

Marshall avoided any criminal charges at the time of the incident. Myles' suit, first filed three years ago, seeks $75,000 plus punitive damages. No one disputes she was punched. What's not clear is who did it.

The morning of Day 2 of Marshall's civil trial provided some interesting revelations.

The case thus far has presented a lot of murky he-said, she-said details. What is clear, based on security footage shown in court, is that an altercation broke out inside the Marquee nightclub and later continued outside on the sidewalk.

Marshall's wife, Michi, was struck in the face by a bottle inside the club and had a few teeth knocked out and her lip split. Myles was hit in the eye and was later treated for her injuries by an optometrist who also testified Wednesday.

Sims-Walker was seen throwing a punch inside the club, based on the security footage. Myles' then-boyfriend could be observed throwing several punches.

Once the situation moved outside, Myles and another, unidentified woman were caught on video approaching Sims-Walker. Myles has admitted several times in court that she struck Sims-Walker at that point. Sims-Walker said in his deposition one of the women had struck him in the back with a bottle outside the club.

Also Wednesday, Marshall's attorney, Harvey Steinberg, established several discrepancies in Myles' account of the night in question.

In his deposition, Sims-Walker also spoke about how, in his recollection, Myles approached him and Marshall in an aggressive manner. The two men were standing next to each other as Myles approached them and swung at Sims-Walker.

"We were defending ourselves," Sims-Walker said in his deposition. "We did nothing to nobody. We were totally victims in this case. I don't understand why we're even here."

Sims-Walker admitted to pushing a woman—who was not Myles—during the melee outside the club. He said Marshall punched somebody, but it is not clear who. Sims-Walker said neither he nor Marshall struck a woman at any point.

"No one punched a woman," Sims-Walker said.

Video shown Wednesday in court showed Marshall throwing what looked like a punch at someone outside as things escalated. But the video is grainy and choppy; Myles claims Marshall hit her, but it's not exactly clear whether that's true.

Additionally, moments after Marshall can be seen possibly throwing a punch, another woman can be seen entering the scrum and dropping both of her clasped hands onto someone. It's also not clear if that woman—whose identity is unknown to everyone involved—was the person who struck Myles in the eye.

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/04/video_shows_brandon_marshall_possibly_throwing_pun.html#incart_river_index

NEW YORK — A grainy, blurry video shown in Manhattan federal court on Wednesday appears to show Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall maybe punching a woman who is suing him for assaulting her.

The footage, taken by a security camera, shows Marshall reaching out with his left arm and then again with his right after the woman, Christin Myles, approached Marshall and former NFL receiver Mike Sims-Walker outside the Marquee nightclub in midtown Manhattan in March 2012.

The New York Police Department decided at the time not to arrest or charge Marshall.

Wednesday morning's video was a better representation of the footage shown to jurors at the Daniel Patrick Moynihan United States Courthouse on Tuesday, the first day of the civil trial against Marshall. Tuesday's video had only appeared to show Marshall lunging or punching with his left arm.

Wednesday's footage is not dispositive about whether an actual punch was thrown, however, because it was grainy and has a slow frame rate. It's also not clear whether the person Marshall may have struck at that moment was Myles; Myles and another woman were both in the vicini ty, and the video is not definitive enough to make out exactly who was who in the ensuing scrum.

Myles told the jury Marshall, who again was present in court, had punched her with his right arm and not his left, and that she recalled seeing tattoos and a blue sleeve at the time of the punch that she later learned were consistent with Marshall's appearance that night.

Complicating matters further, another woman—unknown to all involved—can be seen entering the scrum to drop a two-handed punch that began above her head onto someone on the ground. What's not clear is whether that woman's punch landed on Myles' face.

Later Wednesday, Mike Sims-Walker, Marshall's former college teammate and continued close friend, told the jury Marshall did punch someone, but that it wasn't Myles. Sims-Walker also said he and Marshall felt like they were attacked.

Marshall's attorney, Harvey Steinberg, did establish some inconsistencies in Myles' account of the events of that night under cross-examination.

Steinberg also tried to establish, by freezing the frame, that Marshall's sleeves were down both before and immediately after the punch. It was not clear whether the sleeve was up the moment the punch was thrown.

Myles has now admitted several times that she approached Sims-Walker outside the club and "swung" at him, though Steinberg got her to admit she only recalled that after seeing the video first shown on Tuesday.

Steinberg also got Myles to basically admit that her former attorney had arranged for a New York Daily News photographer to be present at the police precinct when she first went to the cops a few days after the incident. Myles also said, however, that her former attorney had done that against her wishes.

What is clear is that someone punched Myles that night. An optometrist also testified Wednesday to having treated Myles for a black eye a few days after the incident.

Former Raiders WR/KR Jeremy Ross agrees to deal with Jets (Rich Cimini) April 6, 2016 ESPN New York

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets

The New York Jets could replace one Jeremy with another.

Former Oakland Raiders wide receiver/kick returner Jeremy Ross is expected to sign with the Jets, pending a physical, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Caplan reported on Wednesday night. The Raiders relinquished their rights to Ross, a restricted free agent, by declining to make a tender offer.

Ross, 28, played in 11 games last season -- five with the Baltimore Ravens, six with the Raiders. He finished with nine catches for 88 yards. In four seasons, he has 39 catches, 469 yards and two touchdowns.

Chances are, Ross' best chance of making the team will be as a returner. The Jets released their only punt returner from last season, Jeremy Kerley, so that job is wide open. They also didn't have a dynamic kickoff returner, another position for the taking.

Ross has experience in both areas. He has a combined 143 returns in his career, including two for touchdowns (one punt, one kickoff return).

Jets asked D'Brickashaw Ferguson about pay cut, seeking cap room (Rich Cimini) April 6, 2016 ESPN New York

http://espn.go.com/newyork/nfl/story/_/id/15150691/new-york-jets-asked-dbrickashaw-ferguson-pay-cut

With almost no room under the salary cap, the New York Jets have approached left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson about taking a pay cut, sources confirmed Wednesday night.

With a $14.1 million cap charge, Ferguson, 32, has been an obvious candidate for months. The team has only $565,000 in cap space, according to NFLPA records, and it's still hoping to re-sign quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Despite the query, no formal negotiations have occurred, according to sources, and Ferguson's status has no bearing on the Jets' offer to Fitzpatrick.

General manager Mike Maccagnan broached the subject last week in a brief conversation with Ferguson in the team's weight room. Maccagnan mentioned how they needed cap relief, and that was the extent of it, one source said.

Presumably, talks will pick up in the coming weeks.

Ferguson is scheduled to make $10.38 million this season: $8.63 million in base salary, plus $1.75 million in bonuses. None of it is guaranteed.

There's no immediate deadline, because no bonus money is due until the completion of the offseason program in June. If Ferguson completes the program, he'd earn a $750,000 workout bonus.

Ferguson, who signed a six-year, $60 million contract in 2012, is signed through 2017.

Publicly, team officials haven't committed to him for 2016, fueling speculation about his status. Maccagnan said recently, "Right now, I'd say he would be on our roster going forward, but we'll see how this thing unfolds."

Ferguson, the fourth overall pick in 2006, has started every game in 10 seasons for the Jets. He has been one of the most durable players in the league and has never missed a snap because of an injury.

The New York Daily News first reported that Ferguson was approached about a pay cut.

Information from ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter was used in this report .

Paxton Lynch shows he could handle MetLife winds if picked by Jets (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York April 6, 2016

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/59490/qb-paxton-lynch-shows-he-could-handle-metlife-winds-if-picked-by-jets

Wind won't be a problem for Paxton Lynch.

By all accounts, the former Memphis quarterback put on a throwing exhibition Wednesday at his wind-swept pro day. Lynch, measured a shade under 6-foot-7, showed his arm strength in difficult conditions, completing one ball that traveled 65 yards in the air. That could appeal to teams in the northeast.

Lynch has been linked to the New York Jets because, of the top three quarterbacks in this year's NFL draft, he's most likely to be available with the 20th pick. Carson Wentz and Jared Goff are expected to be top-10 picks.

The Jets were represented at Lynch's pro day in Memphis, Tennessee, as were 25 other teams, but general manager Mike Maccagnan wasn't in attendance. His name appeared on a list that was distributed to reporters in the morning, but he wasn't able to make it. He'll get a chance to see Lynch in the coming days, as the Jets are among his 12 pre-draft visits.

They're also slated to host Penn State's Christian Hackenberg before the draft.

Will the Jets draft a quarterback for the fourth straight year? Well, they have only two on the roster: Geno Smith and Bryce Petty. Starter Ryan Fitzpatrick still is in free-agent limbo, though his status probably won't impact the draft. If they lose Fitzpatrick to another team -- unlikely -- they'd probably replace him with a veteran. The decision to draft a quarterback, in the first round or the last round, will be based on whether the Jets believe it's a good value.

ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay picked Lynch to the Jets in his most recent mock draft, but he doesn't think it would be a great fit.

"Honestly, probably not," he said after Lynch's pro day. "It's in New York -- the pressure is going to be there if they take a quarterback in the first round. I'm not saying that pressure will force the coaching staff to put him in, but we've seen it before."

Twice before, actually. Mark Sanchez (2009) and Geno Smith (2013) were opening-day starters as rookies. Many agree that Lynch, while physically talented, will need time to develop.

The non-trade that saved Jets star Brandon Marshall from himself (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York April 6, 2016

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/59475/the-non-trade-that-saved-jets-star-brandon-marshall-from-himself

NEW YORK -- Brandon Marshall was almost traded to the New York Jets in 2009, and again in 2010. Did you know that? Probably not. Looking back, he's glad he wasn't. He doesn't believe he was emotionally ready for Gotham. Instead of the Dark Knight, he fears there would've been too many dark nights.

Oh, it was tempting. No longer wanted by the Denver Broncos, who got tired of his diva act and put him on the trading block, Marshall had a choice of the Jets and Miami Dolphins. He remembers an April 2010 phone call from Rex Ryan and Mike Tannenbaum, the former Jets coach and general manager, respectively. They tried to sell him on the Jets, but they were offering only $12 million guaranteed and the Dolphins were at $24 million.

"I really believe God took me to Miami to show me where I was struggling and my weaknesses, " Marshall was saying Tuesday night in Manhattan. "All that stuff happened there. Got the help I needed. Spent three months at McLean Hospital (in Boston) in an outpatient program."

Marshall was referring to his 2011 diagnosis for borderline personality disorder, a mental illness marked by unstable moods, behavior and relationships. Prior to the that, he was known for his volatile personality, resulting in no fewer than eight domestic disputes and four arrests between 2006 and 2011.

Instead of keeping quiet, making it a personal battle against BPD, Marshall has spent the past five years trying to make himself the face of the illness. It takes courage. Think about it: This is a 6 -foot-4, 230-pound world-class athlete telling the world, loudly, his brain isn't wired properly -- and he's not ashamed of it. His life's work is to reduce the stigma and raise awareness of mental illness, and he's doing it through his foundation, Project 375.

"It takes a lot of guts to be involved in that charity and admit what he's going through," former New York Giants GM Ernie Accorsi said. "As an old scout, you dream about finding a guy like that."

Accorsi and Marshall were brought together Tuesday night by the National Football Foundation, which honored Marshall with its Ernie Accorsi Humanitarian Award. The Jets wide receiver was feted at the swanky New York Athletic Club, one of the stately addresses on Central Park South. In a big room filled with mahogany walls and chandeliers, Marshall posed for pictures with top high-school athletes in the area, schmoozed with corporate types and, later, told his story upon receiving the award from Accorsi.

14 | P a g e

"We feel like this is the last stigma in our country," Marshall said before the dinner, alluding to mental illness. "When you look at what our country has been through, we're a fairly young country, but we're so behind in the way we approach mental health. It's disgusting, to be honest. ... We're working hard to break down the stigma. Where we are today is where the cancer and HIV community was 20, 25 years ago."

In some ways, this night marked the pinnacle of Marshall's crusade. There he was, in the heart of New York, speaking to a rapt audience about his life's mission. He truly believes he's in the right place at the right time, that his mistakes in Denver, Miami and Chicago prepared him for this moment in his career -- in his life.

"I didn't handle every situation right (in Chicago)," said Marshall, who played with the Bears from 2012 to 2014. "I didn't know how to deal with the media. I sat back and reflected and self-assessed and now I'm here. I always say football is my platform, not my purpose."

Perhaps ironically, on one of his best days, Marshall relived one of his worst.

Marshall spent the day downtown in the Daniel Patrick Moynihan U.S. Courthouse, surrounded by lawyers in courtroom 11A, the honorable Judge George B. Daniels presiding. For the better part of seven hours, Marshall was back to March 11, 2012, the night he allegedly assaulted a woman outside a Manhattan nightclub. Christin Myles, 28, of California, sobbed on the witness stand, accusing him of punching her in the left eye during a sidewalk melee.

"I want justice," she told the judge and 12-person jury.

She also wants unspecified damages. It's a civil trial, expected to last a few days. There never was a criminal proceeding because authorities in 2012 determined there wasn't enough evidence to file charges.

The alleged incident occurred eight months after Marshall went public with his diagnosis. Since then, he has stayed out of trouble, trying hard to change his image. That the trial began on the same day he was honored for humanitarianism was a case of lousy timing, certainly a bad optic.

"Interesting" was how Jets coach Todd Bowles described the coincidence, proceeding to praise Marshall for his character and willingness to fight against mental illness.

"You can't help but marvel at what he's done," said Bowles, who attended the awards dinner.

You could say the juxtaposition of downtown assault trial/midtown lovefest painted Marshall as the ultimate enigma -- Old Brandon versus New Brandon, all in one day. That's a reach. If the jury determines that he inflicted harm on Myles, he should pay the price. But that was four years ago, a different time in his life. He's trying to be a better person and he's trying to improve the lives of others. It doesn't mean we should forget the past, but it doesn't have to define him.

"Any time I get an opportunity to use this platform and use my good stories and bad stories to inspire kids, I'm always going to take advantage of that," he said.

It was 7:30 p.m. at the New York Athletic Club. Less than three hours earlier, he walked out of courtroom 11A, declining to discuss the trial. There wasn't enough time for a wardrobe change. He showed up for his big night wearing the same dark navy pinstriped suit he wore in court.

Except with a different colored tie.

NEW YORK POST

Jets to vet Ferguson: Take pay cut to help us sign Fitzpatrick (Brian Costello) New York Post April 6, 2016

http://nypost.com/2016/04/05/how-jets-might-use-nfl-draft-for-tight-end-facelift/

The Jets are working on clearing some salary cap space in hopes of getting a deal done with free agent quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

The team approached veteran tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson last week while he was working out at the team’s facility and told him they may need his help in order to get Fitzpatrick signed, according to a source. This move has been anticipated for months.

The Jets currently have just over $500,000 in salary cap space. They have been at an impasses with Fitzpatrick for more a month over a new contract with Fitzpatrick hoping for a payday in the neighborhood of $16 million a year and the Jets offering $7 million a year.

Ferguson’s salary cap figure for 2016 is $14.1 million. It was unclear how much of a paycut the Jets would want him to take, but they are going to need to clear significant cap space to get a deal done with Fitzpatrick. Ferguson is probably just one of several moves they would have to make to create cap space for Fitzpatrick and to sign their draft picks.

Ferguson, 32, could decline the Jets’ request to take a paycut, and the team could cut him, but sources indicated he is open to a reasonable cut in pay.

The Jets drafted Ferguson with the fourth overall pick in the 2006 draft, and he has been a c ore member of the team since. He has missed just one snap in his entire career and that was because the team was running a trick formation.

While Ferguson’s durability has been amazing, his play has slipped in recent years. He went to three straight Pro Bowls between 2009-11, but is no longer the same player.

“Right now, D’Brickashaw is under contract and I would say is our thought is that he would be [on the roster],” Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan said last month. “But like everything else with all players, and I said this early on with free agency this year, it’s kind of a fluid free agency for us. We’re trying to make decisions that are in the best interest of the organization — both short and long term — so right now I would say he would be on our roster going forward, but we’ll see how this thing unfolds.”

The Jets plan to sign KR/PR Jeremy Ross, according to a source. Ross is a five-year veteran who has played for the Colts, Packers, Lions, Raiders and Ravens.

Jets ask D’Brickashaw Ferguson to take pay cut in order to help re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick (Manish Mehta) April 6, 2016 New York Daily News

http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-crime/jury-set-trial-jets-marshall-2012-woman-punch-article-1.2589367

The Jets hope that D'Brickashaw Ferguson can do them a solid to bring back Ryan Fitzpatrick.

The Daily News has learned that the team has asked the three-time Pro Bowl left tackle to take a significant pay cut to free up money to help re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Ferguson, who has never missed a snap due to injury in his 10-year career, is scheduled to count $14.1 million against the 2016 salary cap, but the organization would like cap relief for plenty of reasons, including increasing their financial flexibility to get back their starting quarterback, according to sources.

In fact, the brain trust has made it clear to Ferguson that a pay reduction would help the team bring back Fitzpatrick, who has been at an impasse with the club for more than a month after receiving a low-ball offer.

The Jets discussed their plans with Ferguson last week at the team facility, according to sources. The exact amount of the pay cut remains unclear, but the team would almost certainly prefer to free up about $4-$5 million. Ferguson, who was working out at One Jets Drive when the team approached him, is scheduled to earn $10.375 million in cash (base salary and bonuses) this season.

Ferguson, 32, could also decline an unreasonable pay cut request and force a release if he wanted to go elsewhere, but the sense is that he'd be amenable to playing on a fair reduced salary, according to sources. The third option is retirement.

"Right now, D'Brickashaw is under contract," general manager Mike Maccagnan said a few weeks ago. "Our thought is that he would be (on the roster)… We're trying to make decisions that are in the best interest of the organization - both short and long term - so right now I would say he would be on our roster going forward, but we'll see how this thing unfolds."

Todd Bowles also had a recent cryptic take about his veteran left tackle.

"Going forward, we'll see how it goes," Bowles said of Ferguson. "Right now, he's on our team."

The Jets flirted with free-agent Kelvin Beachum before the left tackle signed with Jacksonville. The Jets, frankly, don't have any real alternatives to Ferguson. So, decision makers conveyed to Ferguson last week that they would like him to stick around and help build a winning team. They're hopeful that a reasonable middle ground can be reached. The Jets do not want to release him.

The Jets' pow-wow with Ferguson came after their inexplicable radio silence for months after the season ended. The silent treatment was peculiar for one of the most respected players in the Woody Johnson era.

Ferguson has played 10,357 out of a possible 10,358 snaps in 170 career games. He has never missed a game or appeared on the injury report. His declining skills, however, made a pay reduction inevitable.

Ferguson has two years left on a blockbuster 8-year, $73.6 million contract. He is scheduled to earn $8.65 million in base salary, $1 million roster bonus and $750,000 workout bonus in 2016. The Jets would save $9.1 million by cutting Ferguson, but they have told him that is not their intention.

17 | P a g e

The Jets have a league-low $565,000 in cap space, according to NFLPA records, but would get a much bigger cushion by slashing Ferguson's salary. It would also give them a few extra million to put toward Fitzpatrick, who is obviously the team's best quarterback option for 2016.

The Jets have taken a hard-line stance with Fitzpatrick by offering a less-than-market value deal relative to other starting quarterbacks. However, Fitzpatrick has not found a more lucrative option elsewhere, leaving both sides in a painstaking stare down for a month. Nobody has blinked thus far, but a reunion seems inevitable.

If the Jets are reasonable with Ferguson, they could have their left tackle and quarterback back in the fold.

LIKE A ROSS: The Jets will sign wide receiver/returner Jeremy Ross pending a physical, according to a source. The Raiders didn't give Ross a restricted free agent tender last month.
