Course DescriptionUnder the direction of expert faculty, this course is designed to improve endoscopic practice through live case presentations, video demonstrations, and educational lectures including audience interaction and questions, as well as hands-on training using animal tissue models.

The course goals are to help participants improve their ability to accurately diagnose and effectively treat the spectrum of gastrointestinal diseases and disorders, enhance quality and safety in all practice settings, recognize trends in interventional endoscopic and surgical procedures, apply state-of-the-art technology in a cost-effective way, embrace advances in healthcare delivery, payment, and information sharing; and to foster an evidence-based approach to endoscopic decision-making for commonly encountered and controversial problems in gastroenterology.

Gastrointestinal endoscopy continues to experience rapid expansion of knowledge and technological innovation, both of which are impacting the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal disorders. Additionally, advances in therapeutic endoscopy are challenging or entirely replacing certain endoscopic techniques that previously were purely diagnostic. Gastroenterologists must understand and effectively apply current and emerging diagnostic and treatment options while maximizing quality and safety. In view of these developments, the need for superior continuing education becomes increasingly important. This course will enable participants to attain and apply cutting-edge information and evolving technological innovations to elevate practice levels and enhance patient care and treatment outcomes.

Learning Objectives • Discuss the spectrum of commonly seen disorders of the

esophagus and stomach, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett’s esophagus, motility disorders, and peptic ulcer disease, and outline related treatment options and their effectiveness

• Evaluate advances in the methods of assessing disease status in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, and discuss the application of these techniques to patient treatment

• Discuss the efficacy and safety of treatments for viral hepatitis, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and other chronic liver disorders

• Identify appropriate methods to detect and treat common disorders of the small bowel and colon, such as colon polyps, as well as endobariatric therapy for obesity, and review the effectiveness of these approaches

• Examine the diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities of current and emerging advanced endoscopic techniques to diagnose and treat disorders of the hepatobiliary tract, pancreas, and luminal gastrointestinal tract and to detect and manage obscure upper and lower GI bleeding

hemostat spray, endoscopic clips, and APC• Employ methods for detection of dysplasia, including chromoendoscopy, NBI, and

distal attachments; and methods for removal or destruction of dysplastic lesions using colon EMR, cap band EMR and hybrid APC

• Practice endoscopic dilation and foreign body removal• Perform endoscopic treatment of hemorrhoids

Course DescriptionWith the recent development of remarkably effective antiviral drugs for hepatitis C, there is increasing focus on management of patients cured of HCV infection but still at risk for complications of advanced liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma. Simultaneously, intense attention has shifted to other liver diseases including hepatitis B and fatty liver disease, which is emerging as a global epidemic projected to be the leading indication for liver transplantation within a few years. This program will explore difficult hepatitis B management decisions, such as whether to treat immune tolerant patients or to stop treatment in those with years of viral suppression on nucleotide therapy, and how to identify patients at risk for adverse liver-related outcomes. Current approaches to diagnostic dilemmas as well as management approaches to the emerging epidemic of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease will be discussed. Recent data on the management of portal hypertension, complications and eloquent new therapeutic approaches to advanced liver disease, and management guidance for participants in everyday practice will also be presented. Changes to the transplant listing policies for liver cancer as well as latest treatment approaches will be reviewed.

Learning Objectives • Compare the arguments pertaining to difficult management decisions in

hepatitis B, such as treatment of immune tolerant patients, prevention of reactivation guidance and discontinuation of therapy after long-term viral suppression

• Describe how to use noninvasive tools in the assessment of fatty liver disease to identify which patients are at risk of liver-related morbidity and mortality and evaluate latest treatment advances

• Review the latest data on approaches to management of portal hypertension, a frequent complication of cirrhosis, and review primary prevention strategies

• Review the evolving transplant listing rules for hepatocellular carcinoma and current management approaches, while evaluating locoregional ablative treatments including the role of new systemic options
