Newbery Park Primary School
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Welcome back. We hope that all families have had a wonderful break and a great start
to 2016.
It has been great to catch up with our students, find out what they have been up to and
what their goals for 2016 are. As I walk around the school it has been extremely
impressive to see all of our students in school uniform and most of our students in the new
school polo top. I think you would agree, they look very smart and clearly demonstrate
school pride and identify us as Newbery Park Primary School. If you would like to
purchase a new polo top at any time, our front office have an array of sizes available at
$24.50 a shirt. Don’t forget that Newbery Park Primary School has a sun smart policy. This
means that in terms 1 & 4, all students are to wear a navy blue bucket or broad brimmed
hat.
Setting up for Success
In the first two weeks of term 1 your child’s teacher will be setting our students up for
success. Teachers will be talking to students about class and school rules and
behavioural expectations. They will also be working with your child to discuss their
academic goals. This means looking at where they are currently achieving, where they
should be and how they are going to get there. Please talk with your child and their
classroom teacher about their learning, how they are progressing and what you can do
to support them. If at any stage throughout the school year you have a concern or a
question, please make contact with your child’s classroom teacher in the first instance.
Attendance and SMS service
From time to time students will have time off school for varying reasons. Irrespective of
the reason, it is important to inform the school as to why your child is away. To help
families communicate with the school, as of Tuesday 2nd February the school has started
to provide those families who have a child away from school with an SMS to remind
them to inform the school of why their child is away. Families, if they choose can then
respond to the school via SMS. A phone call or a note to the school is also acceptable. If
you know that your child is going to be away families may also choose to SMS the school
rather than wait for a reminder. Every day at school counts, a day off for a family
member’s birthday is an example which can lead to your child falling behind in their
learning. Families with children away for 5 consecutive days or longer are asked to see
the front office staff for an exemption form. This is usually done for absences incurred for
family holidays or specific family circumstances. Please check with the front office to
make sure that the school has your correct mobile phone details. Our school and
department’s attendance goal is to have every student attend school 93% of the time or
higher.
Volunteering at Newbery Park Primary School
Our school prides itself on its exceptional volunteers. Volunteers in the past have been
required to have a DCSI police clearance. In a new DECD policy, our department has
made it easier for families to volunteer by no longer requiring a relevant history
screening. This will mean that our volunteers will be able to help out sooner. Volunteers
should note that a screening is still necessary for parents and guardians who are
volunteering at school camps and sleep overs, as well as those hosting billets and
homestay students.

Keeping Our Students and Young People Safe
As the school year has begun there are a couple of housekeeping matters which we must remember. To keep our
students and young people safe, please remember not to use the staff car park as a pick up and drop off zone. We
must also remember that all students and adults must use the school crossing. In our first few weeks we have had a few
near misses. We want to ensure that our students get to school and go home safely.
Annual General Meeting
This session is an opportunity for the school to report on 2015 through the school annual report. At this meeting our
Governing Council will be elected.
Thursday 3rd March 2016, 4:00pm.
Start Time: 4pm
Where: School Library
Child Care Provided: in the gym
Acquaintance Afternoon
Acquaintance afternoon is an opportunity to become acquainted with your child’s classroom teacher and class. It is
an opportunity to engage in conversations about learning, routines, class and school happenings. Historically this has
been held of an evening. However, this year we are trying something new in an attempt to improve participation. This
event will be held on Friday afternoon. We look forward to seeing you, so please pop in whilst you collect your
child(ren)from school. If you elect to pop in from 2.30pm, once finished, parents may choose to take their child home.
In doing so, please remember to sign them out at the front office.
Friday 19th February, 2016
Start Time: 2.30pm – 4pm
Where: your child’s classroom
Kind Regards
Stuart Miller

Breakfast Club Helpers Needed We are in need of some helpers for the School’s Breakfast Club program. The program operates every morning from
8:30am-8:50am (as well as set up and pack up time) and provides toasted sandwiches, toast, milo, fruit and other
food. This program is a vital part of the school’s wellbeing program as it helps students to get the best start for the day.
The school would really appreciate your assistance and availability to help maintain this service. The Breakfast Club
program really is a lot of fun and I would love to see you a part of it.
Thanks
