bour left a legacy of debtthe Coalition Governmentt is on a mind-boggling
ale.
st year, Labour borrowed57 billion - a quarter of theney they spent. Our tional Debt is now2,400 for every person.
s a result, we now
pend £120 million
very single day just

ational Debt.nk of how many nurses,chers and doctors we
uld employ with that.
e Coalition has set out tokle the debt, get spendingder control and restoretain’s finances.
e cuts will be difficult buty will be fair. People who
e better off will pay more.
e are determined to clear
the mess to ensure Britaina fairer and moreosperous country.
ving presided over thess, Labour try to blame
eryone but themselves. It’shame they won’t tell the
untry what they would do tort out the crisis. They says are needed but opposeery single one announcedfar. That’s no way to run country. No wonder tain got in such a messen they were in control.
Labour’s financial failings mean the
country is now having to fork out awhopping £120 million per day - just to
pay the interest on its debt.
For that money, the Government could
have taken 11 million people out of paying
Income Tax, doubled spending on education
or tripled the number of doctors in our
hospitals.
Deputy Prime Minister and Lib Dem
Leader Nick Clegg explained, “During its
thirteen years in power, Labour spent money
it did not have and made promises it knew it
EXPOSEDcould not keep.
“Last year alone, one pound in every fourthat Labour spent was borrowed.”
Now in government, the Lib Dems aretaking the action needed to get our economyback on track.
Newcastle City Council Leader DavidFaulkner added, “By cutting the deficit, wecan build a stronger economy - keepinginterest rates low and creating new jobs.
“If we had failed to deal with Labour’s debt,the future of the country would be at risk.The cuts being made now are Labour’s cuts.”
Labour’s £120 million-a-day debt
Labour Minister’s note to Coalition Government
“I’m afraid that there is no money left”
Sharing theburden fairly
Fiona Hall, Euro MP for Tyneside, looks at thCoalition’s plans to ensure the burden of cutand tax increases is shared fairly.
It will be a tough battle to get Government spendinunder control but ministers are determined to ensur
that the burden is spread fairly with the richest payin
the largest share.
To help make the books balance we are:
ending child benefit for higher rate taxpayers (w
were surprised Labour argued that millionnaire
should continue to receive it);
bringing in a levy on the banks so they can pa
towards the mess they helped create (Labour claime
it would not be possible to do this);
increasing capital gains tax on the most wealth
- a move that Labour refused to bring in when the
were in government;
A fair chance for every child
The Lib Dems in government are set to provide more money
to give every child in Britain a fair chance and to ensure
that no child is left behind.
2-years-olds to 20-years-olds will benefit from over £7billion which
will be spent giving disadvantaged children the fair start they
deserve in life.
The plans include more access to pre-school education for 2-years-
olds, more money to help poorer pupils in the areas where they
live and help to ensure every bright child has the opportunity to
go to University - regardless of their background.
Deputy Prime Minister and Lib Dem Leader Nick Clegg
explained, “Helping the most disadvantaged children in our
schools will mean help for all children. It will also help us build a
fairer society for everybody, with less crime and lower youth
unemployment.”
“Labour just threw money at every problem but made no real
difference - we need to change that. We need to make things better
for everyone.”
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has launched a plan to
ensure that additional support is provided for children from
disadvantaged areas to get the best start in life. ending tax privileges enjoyed
by the richest people on theirpensions.
The Coalition is also
determined to ensure that work
pays and that a life on benefits
is not acceptable. We are:
increasing the personal tax
allowance to £10,000 so that
you keep more of the moneyyou earn rather than have it taken out of your pa
packet by the Government. The first step to this wil
come in April when the allowance will rise by £1,000
taking 900,000 low paid people out of tax altogether;
reforming the benefit systemso that people are bette
off in work than on benefits;
raising the state pension at
least in line with earnings
(Labour promised to do this
but in 13 years in government did nothing).
