Newmarket High School Graduation Awards Hello Graduating Students! If you are planning to attend College or University next year, you may be eligible to apply to numerous Graduation Awards and Bursaries, many of which carry a significant monetary value. Each of the awards listed below require an application. Please be aware that award criteria and deadlines are strictly adhered to. Applications have been sent out by email to your YRDSB student account. All applications, including cover sheet and required documentation, must be submitted by email to Mr. Ward ([email protected]) or Ms. Pressley ([email protected]) by 3:00pm on Friday, May 8 th , 2020. AINSLEY AWARD: Funds for these awards are provided through the bequest of the late Walston Ainsley, a graduate of Newmarket High School, to provide financial assistance to graduates who made significant contributions to the extracurricular program at Newmarket High School, and are pursuing post-secondary education. AINSLEY AWARD: Funds for these awards are provided through the bequest of the late Walston

Ainsley, a graduate of Newmarket High School, to provide financial assistance to graduates who made significant contributions to the extracurricular program at Newmarket High School, and are pursuing post-secondary education. Successful candidates shall have exhibited the qualities of co-operation, initiative, leadership, and industry during their careers at Newmarket High School. The general financial situation of the candidate shall be taken into consideration.

**CANADIAN FEDERATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN: Awarded annually to a female student who

has demonstrated a positive attitude and work ethic, and who has made a notable contribution to school and/or community.

FRANCES & WILLIAM WALKER AWARD: Donated in 2003 by the Walker Family in memory of

their parents, Frances (Stickwood) and William Walker. Presented annually to a student who has a strong work ethic and has demonstrated an appreciation for local history, the natural environment, and/or literacy skills. The general financial situation of a candidate shall be taken into consideration.

JAMES WILLIAM BOWMAN AWARD: Awarded to students who have a minimum average of 66%

and are planning post-secondary education in any area of Fine Arts.

MARY PEGG EDUCATION AWARD: Awarded by the family and friends of Mary Pegg to a female student pursuing post-secondary education and who has shown positive involvement in both their school and community.

TYPE B: Awarded to a student with a minimum average of 75% and who is registered full time at a Canadian University. (applicant with highest average)

NEWMARKET HIGH SCHOOL, 110TH REUNION COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY BURSARY: Awarded to students with a minimum average of 66% who will be registered full time at a Canadian University. College bursaries are awarded to students with a minimum average of 60%. The general financial situation of a candidate shall be taken into consideration.

NEWMARKET MAYOR’S GOLF CLASSIC: Awarded to a student with demonstrated financial need

in order to participate in post-secondary education. Must be a resident of Newmarket. **NEWMARKET VETERANS’ ASSOCIATION BURSARY: Awarded annually to a student who is a

direct family relative to a Regular or Associate Member of the Newmarket Veterans’ Association or a direct family relative who was a member of the Allied Forces or Merchant Marines in World War II or the Korean conflict.

WASIM JARRAH BUSINESS EXCELLENCE AWARD: Awarded to a graduating student who has

demonstrated excellence and innovation in business, and an appreciation for entrepreneurship. **Awards selected by community organizations. These awards do not require an application, however if you are ONLY applying for one of these awards, please be sure to attach a copy of your resume. LIEUTENANT GOVENOR’S COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER AWARD

Awarded in recognition of exemplary student involvement in the community.

NEWMARKET-TAY POWER COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD Awarded to a student who resides in the Newmarket Hydro service territory, who has enhanced the Newmarket community, and is going into some type of post-secondary education.

NEWMARKET-TAY POWER DISTRIBUTION SCIENCE AWARD Awarded to a student who resides in the Newmarket Hydro service territory, who is pursuing a post-secondary program in Science, Engineering or Technology studies and has achieved exemplary marks in Math and Science.

AINSLEY AWARDS – NEWMARKET HIGH SCHOOL

These awards are for the purpose of providing financial assistance in the continuation of higher education to graduates of Newmarket High School.

To apply for this award, please provide a typed outline addressing the criteria listed below. Applications are to be emailed to Guidance ([email protected] or [email protected]) by May 8th, 2020.

1. Criteria for Selection (a) Successful candidates shall have exhibited the qualities of co-operation, initiative,

leadership and industry during their careers at Newmarket High School. (b) Successful candidates shall have made valid contributions to the extracurricular program at

Newmarket High School. This program includes the fields of art, music, drama and athletics, to name a few.

(c) Successful candidates must be enrolled as a full time student in the first year of a program at an accredited post-secondary institution.

(d) The general financial situation of a candidate shall be taken into consideration. (e) A student of Newmarket High School who wishes to withdraw from the formal education

process upon graduation may apply for this award that he or she does so within two years of graduation from Newmarket High School and at the time satisfies the requirement in (c).

FRANCES AND WILLIAM WALKER AWARD

The Walker family, in memory of their parents, Frances Stickwood and William Walker, donates this award. Frances and her three daughters all attended Newmarket High School when it was located on Prospect Street. Mr. & Mrs. Walker had a strong appreciation for rural life, their community, and lifelong learning.

The Town of Newmarket purchased the Stickwood Walker property, located on Mulock Dr. across the street from N.H.S. in the spring of 2003. Thus, the architecture and agricultural heritage of one of the founding families of Newmarket is preserved.

This award is for the purpose of providing financial assistance in the continuation of higher education to graduates of Newmarket High School. Criteria for Selection

A. Successful candidate(s) shall have exhibited, through their learning skills, a strong work ethic while enrolled at Newmarket High School.

B. Successful candidate(s) shall have demonstrated: • Appreciation for the attainment of literacy skills • And/or the pursuit of an appreciation of local history • And/or the pursuit of the preservation of nature or the natural environment

(horticulture, wildlife, environment awareness, animal welfare, agriculture). C. Successful candidate(s) must be enrolled as a full time student in the first year of a program at an accredited post-secondary institution. D. The general financial situation of a candidate shall be taken into consideration.

Eligibility and Selection Guidelines

To be eligible for the award, the candidate:

• Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada • Must be a female student graduating from Newmarket High School or Huron Heights Secondary

School in Newmarket Ontario • Must provide proof of acceptance in full-time studies at a university, college or trade school in

the province of Ontario • Will benefit from financial assistance to continue with her education • Must have demonstrated a positive attitude and strong work ethic • Must have contributed to life in her school and/or community • Must have overcome challenges in order to graduate

A completed application must include:

1. Completion of the Charitable Trust of the Canadian Federation of University Women Aurora/Newmarket Inc. application form

2. A letter outlining her personal situation, career goals and explanation of how this award will enable her to attain these goals. (Less than 500 words)

3. Two letters of reference from non-family members such as teachers, employers or community members

4. Proof of acceptance at post-secondary institution in the province of Ontario

Weighing of Criteria

The application will be judged equally on the criteria and the information contained in the accompanying letter.

Selection Process

The final selection will be made by the members of the Trust and the Pegg family. A member of the Pegg family will be involved in the selection of the winner.

A personal interview or telephone interview may be part of the selection process.

The Trust will inform the recipient of her successful application and also contact the unsuccessful applicants.

The Trust will inform the school of the winner’s name for graduation planning purposes.

The award will be presented at the school’s graduation by a member of the Pegg family.
