Born in War- saw, Poland, he was forced into a Siberian work camp after the Soviet invasion of his homeland in 1939. After escaping through Iran and boarding the Empress of Canada, he was one of few sur- vivors when that ship was torpe- doed on its way to England. He later flew Spitfires for England’s Royal Air Force and earned a citation from the War Office after parachuting into Warsaw as a courier with messages for the Under- ground. De Kwiatkowski later emigrated to Canada, where he became a well-known production engineer at Canadian Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Corporation. He parlayed his knowledge of aviation, and in particular jet engines, into ownership of two successful companies: Kwiatkowski Aircraft Ltd. and Intercontinental Aircraft Ltd. De Kwiatkowski, who traced his roots in racing back five generations, became reacquainted with the Thoroughbred industry in the early ‘70s, and by the following decade his Kennelot Stables had on its roster such talented runners as Eclipse champion De La Rose and Horse of the Year and GI Belmont S. winner Con- quistador Cielo. O/B-Juddmonte Farms Inc (KY); T-Robert Frankel; J-J D Bailey; $600,000. Lifetime Record: 4-2-1-1, $665,800. *1/2 to Chester House (Mr. Prospector), GISW-US, GSW & MG1SP-GB, $1,944,314; Honest Lady (Seattle Slew), GISW, $894,168; Decarchy (Distant View), MGSW-US, $590,474; and Chiselling (Woodman), GISW, $405,760.Click for the free brisnet.com catalogue-style pedigree.

As a member of the Juddmonte team I may not betotally impartial, but is there a better broodmare inAmerica (or anywhere else, for that matter) than PrinceKhalid’s extraordinary Toussaud? When Empire Maker marched to the forefront of theKentucky Derby betting with his highly impressivedisplay in the Florida Derby, he improved Toussaud’srecord with her six foals of racing age to four Grade Iwinners (Chester House, Honest Lady, Chiselling andEmpire Maker) and a Grade II winner (Decarchy). Herrecord is all the more remarkable because each of herfive graded winners is by a different sire, as are hernext two foals--a yearling filly by Seeking the Gold anda filly foal by Kingmambo, which arrived on the day ofEmpire Maker’s victory.

Rise of an Empire..

Empire Maker’s family was introduced to theJuddmonte broodmare band with the purchase in 1987of his second dam, Image of Reality. The mare’s priceof $500,000 reflected Image of Reality’s achievementson the track, which included a victory over the cham-pion filly It’s In The Air in the GII Milady H. over 1 1/16miles. Image of Reality’s solid record as a four-year-oldearned her a weight of 118 on the Blood-Horse FreeHandicap for older females, just eight pounds belowGlorious Song, the top dirt mare. As a daughter of In Reality and a Cornish Princemare, Image of Reality also had the attraction of havinga pedigree free of some of the major sire lines, such asNorthern Dancer and Raise A Native, and she had agood bottom line, too, tracing to the Aga Khan’shigh-class staying filly Teresina. Image of Reality was in foal to El Gran Senor at thetime of her purchase and she was returned to him in1988, after foaling a filly later named Navarra. But forthe fertility problems which dogged El Gran Senor’scareer, this brilliant racehorse--a Grade 1 winner fromseven furlongs to 1 1/2 miles--would probably haveproved every bit as exceptional as a stallion. Althoughsome breeders considered him too big a risk for theirbest mares, El Gran Senor achieved 14-percent stakeswinners among his foals, with a magnificent eight-per-cent winning at group or graded level to the end of lastyear. Few stallions ever match that sort of strike rate.

(Pedigree Insights cont. from p2)

Second Time the Charm.. Image of Reality’s second mating to El Gran Senorresulted in Toussaud. Unfortunately, the mare was toproduce only two more live foals, including the tal-ented English colt Projection (by Topsider), but shehad already done more than enough to justify herpurchase. Navarra won the GIII Vineland H. over amile and an eighth after being sold, and has sinceproduced Grade III winner Indygo Shiner to A.P. Indy, who is scheduled to cover Toussaud later this spring. Toussaud began her career with John Gosden inEngland. Her potential was pretty obvious from themoment she finished second of 21 in a maiden raceon her only start at two and she duly developed intoa Group 3 winner at three, when she beat the colts inthe Criterion S. over seven furlongs, before returningto race nine times on turf in her native America.Bobby Frankel sent her out to win the GII Wilshire H.,GI Gamely H. and GII American H., and she was alsoa creditable fourth to Lure after a troubled passage inthe 1993 Breeders’ Cup Mile. Her chart underlinedthat she possessed that extremely valuable asset ofbeing able to quicken significantly. “Finished well,”“strong late rally,” “strong finish,” “closed withrush,” and “quick gain between horses” were justsome of the assessments of her performances. The other notable aspect of Toussaud as a race-horse was that--in common with many other verytalented performers--she showed plenty of tempera-ment, especially during her morning works and at thestarting gate. This quirkiness sometimes shows up inher progeny, and Empire Maker wasn’t too keen toenter the gate at Gulfstream. Remember, though, that this feistiness can be a plus rather than a minus,as the Storm Cat clan has demonstrated. Toussaud is a medium-sized, lengthy mare, withlengthy pasterns and powerful, broad quarters. Sheshares these attributes with her outstanding sire, who was probably also the source of her powers ofacceleration. She has even inherited El Gran Senor’stroublesome feet, but fortunately hasn’t passed thison to any of her progeny.

Constructing a Champion..

Toussaud stands 16 hands, and her first foal,Arlington Million hero Chester House, is a little taller, with plenty of scope. However, the fact that both hergrandsires, Northern Dancer and In Reality, stoodonly 15.2 hands made it likely that some ofToussaud’s offspring would lack size. Sure enough, the excellent Honest Lady stands only 15.2 hands, despite being by Seattle Slew, and she was followedby Decarchy and the Gone West colt Civilisation, both of whom were small as yearlings. Size thereforebecame an important consideration in selectingToussaud’s 1999 mate and Unbridled, a 16.3-handsson of a 16.3-hands stallion, became first choice. Unbridled also appealed strongly on several otherscores. His pasterns were rather upright, which wasa bonus for a mare who had passed on her weakpasterns to several of her foals, with the exception ofthe well-conformed Chester House (who is by Unbri-dled’s grandsire Mr. Prospector). Another incentivewas the fact that mating Toussaud to Unbridledcreated the same 4x3 inbreeding to In Reality whichappeared in the pedigree of Unbridled’s outstandingdaughter Banshee Breeze, a triple Grade I winner in1998. Supporting this was the 30-percent stakeswinners that In Reality mares had produced amongtheir 20 foals by Fappiano, plus the 1998 KentuckyDerby success of Real Quiet, who was sired by a sonof Fappiano from a grand-daughter of In Reality. Empire Maker was a very attractive and very ath-letic from the moment he was born, but he didn’tstart to develop into the star of Juddmonte’s 2000American crop until the second half of 2001. He thanprogressed to such an extent that he went into train-ing with Bobby Frankel with high hopes that his am-bitious name would prove to be entirely justified.Judging by the ease with which he travelled through-out the Florida Derby, he could well become an em-pire maker now that blinkers are helping him to con-centrate better. The extra furlong of the Derby will beno problem to him and he must have every chance ofgoing one better than Juddmonte’s last KentuckyDerby challenger, the 2000 runner-up Aptitude. But, as everyone knows, the road to ChurchillDowns can be packed with pitfalls and the nextseven weeks are going to be enjoyably nerve-rackingfor everyone involved with this exciting colt.

I think he should be ready to go.” The chestnutcolt was scheduled to make his 2003 debut in the PalmBeach S. on the Gulfstream turf Feb. 21, but thoseplans were scrapped after an onslaught of bad South-ern Florida weather set back his training schedule.Jockey Kent Desormeaux will partner the colt in the 10-furlong event.

(Nakayama Himba S. cont. from p3) Lady Pastel, heroine of the 2001 Japanese Oaks, hadbeen held winless since taking the Shion S. in Septem-ber of 2001. The five-year-old mare was 0-for-six lastseason, but did end the campaign with a third-placeeffort in the G1 Queen Elizabeth Commemorative Cupin November. Making her 2003 debut here, she settledmidpack off a fast pace, was asked for her best as theyraced into the stretch and rallied powerfully along therail to get the victory despite lugging in slightly at thewire. “The reason she came in was that she lost ashoe,” explained her jockey, Masayoshi Ebina, adding,“It was quite a powerful performance.”
