At the “National Day of the Living Heritage” on Sunday 28th August, the Dutch Foundation of Rare Farm Animal Breeds (SZH) will be displaying more than 50 rare Dutch farm breeds.
A colourful Exhibition of cattle, horses, sheep, goats, dogs and chickens will be gathered at the Velder Estate in Liempde, North Brabant, in the Netherlands. We intend that this event will be a pleasant and entertaining way to get a larger public interested in the value and potential of ‘our living heritage’.
You will find out how the animals were used in the old days, if and how they might have changed, and how they are used today. There will be a programme at the main Central Area of the Showground provided for the various species, showing how they appear throughout the day.
To make sure you have a fantastic time and an unforgettable experience, the day will be filled with shows, demonstrations, competitions, judging and workshops. There will also be a wide variety of food and regional specialties available.

LAUGHING CHICKENOccasionally our readers send us photos of poultry they encountered on their travels abroad. “Hans and Ellen” sent us pictures of chickens that they spotted on their journey through the Indonesian archipelago. At first glance, they thought the chicken looked a lot like the chickens we see in the Netherlands, actually a mix-match, but something about them was surely striking: the way of crowing.
After some searching on the internet, we suspect it may be the Ketawa fowl, or a Ketawa cross. The Ayam Ketawa is originally from South Sulawesi, District Sidenreng Rappange (Sidrap) and spread throughout Indonesia. The crow of the cock is not only long, but also of a particular kind of sound. According to the Indonesians their crow sounds like human laughter.On YouTube there are several crowing Ketawa's to see and hear, e.g.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5J9WA_PuCE
Read on the internet: Today the Ayam Ketawa is a protected species. In Celebes and Java, Laughing Chicken competitions are organized with 700 to 800 roosters competing. The roosters are not penned but sit on a bamboo roost. The owner of the winning rooster wins a trophy and often a large amount of money. A NEWLY RECOGNISED PIGEON BREED:
AMSTERDAM HIGHFLYER
In fact the old type – and still flying! –
Dutch Highflyer
Several years ago, members of the Breeders’ Club of Dutch Tumbler Breeds, advanced a plan to re-breed a true flying Dutch Highflyer, like was known in the old days: the ‘old type’ Dutch Highflyer. This idea was picked up and there are now five members have started with this flying breed, which they also want to exhibit.

History has shown that these things generally do not go together. Still the Breeders’ Club of the Dutch Tumblers will give it a try. First, they have chosen a different name than the ‘Old Dutch High Flyer’ - as first was intended. The breed is now recognized as: ‘Amsterdam High Flyer’.
Later this year, when exhibiting the new breed, the exhibitor expects the knowledge and understanding by the judge for this breed shown at the exhibition. For this flying breed it will be of the utmost importance that it is judged completely different than the Dutch High Flyer. It cannot and should not be that a bad Dutch High Flyer will then automatically be a good Amsterdam High Flyer.

There are clear points mentioned in the standard, making this flying breed to have its own description, which is different from the exhibition type of the Dutch Highflyer.It is a small flying pigeon with an active attitude. The body is quite slim, the breast is carried upwards. The stance is slightly sloping. The head is well rounded, without excessive filling in the front. The eye colour preferably pearl white; some red is allowed.A horizontal stance is considered a serious fault.

Maureen Hoyle (UK) sent us some photos of prize-winning animals at the Shows in Great Britain. One of the Champions at the Driffield Show in July 2011 was R. Cornforth with this black German Langshan bantam; a breed that, according to Maureen, gets more and more popular in the UK.In the other picture you see the winning a black Cochin bantam. ( next page)Beautiful birds, but we were again deeply impressed by the beautiful large sized trophies that are won at the English Shows.
On being asked, Maureen said that the cups are solid silver, and usually many years old. They are engraved with the name of the association, the benefactor and the class won. In this case: Driffield Agricultural Club - Jas. Donaldson Cup - Best Soft Feather Bantam. Thus, they have a dual function in recognizing excellence in competition and commemorating people who have had a meritorious connection with the Society.

One of the Winners at the Emley Show, August 6 2011, was this 5 month old Barnevelder pullet by Mr & Mrs Chris Birtwell. Chris has been involved with poultry all his life. He inherited his interest from his father but it is his wife who is the specialist in Barnevelder.

It should be clear that these are 'Perpetual’ Trophies, which the winner can take home for one year, until the next show. There is also a nice cash prize and the rosette is a lasting memory.

festivity, together with all the European breeders of Brahma’s,on 28, 29, and 30 October 2011.

The ZOBK, specialty club of breeders of the Rare Original Belgium Bantams in the Netherlands
is celebrating its 40 years anniversary.October 29th 2011 the ZOBK together with
the ABC ( specialty club of the Barbu d’Anvers) will organise a big one day Jubilee Exhibition in Veenendaal, called:
“THE BELGIUM BANTAM FESTIVITY”
At this show, breeders from Belgium, Germany, France, Great Britain and the Netherlands are invited to show their best birds, male and female, of the following breeds:Barbu de Watermael, Bassette, Belgium Bantam, Waasse Bantam, Tournaisis, Barbu de Grubbe, Barbu d’Everberg, Barbu d’Uccle, Barbu de Bosvoorde, Barbu d’Anvers.Entry fee is € 2,50 per bird and Closing date for entries is October 14.
Breeders and Visitors are heartily invited to the show and to the judging, which is open for public, and to all the other activities that day.There is a presentation about the history of the club, an exposition with all kind of things about the ZOBK and there is the presentation of a new book about the 10 Belgium Bantams.
And of course it will be a splendid opportunity to meet friends, breeders, visitors and judges from different countries between the cages with birds of all Belgian Bantam breeds in a lot of colours and hopefully in very good quality.

Garvo developed two feed series that perfectly bring out the characteristics of the breed: de 800 and the 900-serie show pigeon feeds.
The 900 seriesThe Garvo 900-serie show pigeon feeds consist of five complete feeds for various breed types. We added the fortified Superkorn an extruded pellet to the corns and seeds. This granule contains the necessary amino acids, vitamins, minerals and trace elements. That is why you need not add minerals or vitamins to this 900 series. The animals that feed on this and go to shows are in very good condition and can attend exhibitions more often. Even moulting will pass quicker and better. Experienced pigeon fanciers know that vital pigeons must have the right concentrates to give them no shortage of protective substances. In breeding time it is advisable to give them profi- calcium or a seashell mixture and, if necessary, extra high-protein products as building material for the eggshell and the bone development of their young.
The 800 seriesThe Garvo 800-serie show pigeon feeds are three mixtures for common show pigeon breeds. The mixtures are richly composed of the best corns and seeds. The distribution between protein and energy sources ensures that the nutrients are well utilized. The 800-serie feeds have no added vitamins. You can complete the feeds by supplementing it with garvo-cyme or g-spirits solution. We recommend that you give profi-calcium or seashell in their breeding time.
