News and Tips to Make Your Life Easier, Safer and Happier!

For Our Friends and Clients!

April 2013

Our family had a relaxing trip to Mexico in March. We had an amazing time swimming with the dolphins, spending time together and getting away from the cold Canadian winter.

We continue to have more clients download our free mobile smart phone application. Una and I shot a commercial to show everyone how the mobile application can save time and stress during an auto accident. You can watch it on youtube: http://youtu.be/Y9p_g0pSHwU

We are proud to sponsor Claire Hesslewood and her Seaforth Storm Ringette team. Claire’s team won the all Ontario Ringette Championship in Ottawa last month. Claire and her team are now travelling to Halifax to represent Ontario in the Eastern Canadian Championships.

One of the AAA hockey players P.A.Roy Insurance sponsored this year had an amazing year. We would like to congratulate Kaden Hoggarth, who played wing for the Huron Perth Lakers AAA team on leading his team in scoring.

The Cheapest Car To Insure in 2013

Insure.com’s annual study named the Ford Edge SE the cheapest 2013 model year car to insure in America.

As crossovers and SUVs , like the Ford Edge, are beating out the minivan as the top choice for family vehicles the rates to insure them are falling due to less crashes and repair costs. In the past, minivans have dominated the Insure survey list. This year, the top 10 cheapest cars to insure are:

1. Ford Edge SE 2. Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 3. Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 4. Kia Sportage 5. Jeep Patriot Sport 6. Chevrolet Express 1500 7. Subaru Outback 3.6R 8. Hyundai Tucson GLS 9. Ford Explorer 10. Hyundai Tucson GL The top 10 most expensive cars include eight Mercedes-Benz models—the most expensive being the 12-cylinder CL600 at $3,357 a year—and two Porsche models.

Tax Tips & Things You May Want To Know!

#1 Selling Goods on eBay may result in taxable income. Do you sell goods on eBay? Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has obtained a court order requiring eBay to release to them information on certain Canadian eBay sellers. The information includes names, contact information, and sales records for Sellers who, in any of the years 2006, 2007 or 2008 had more than $20,000 in sales and at least 24 sales transactions, or Sellers who, in any of the years 2006, 2007 or 2008 had more than $100,000 in sales, regardless of the number of sales transactions TAX TIP: If you are an eBay seller please ask your professional tax advisor

#2 Student Tuition education and textbook tax credits In general the following qualify for the tuition tax credit: Tuition fees, if they total more than $100, for courses at a post-secondary school level paid to a university, college, or other educational institution in Canada Tuition fees, if they total more than $100, for courses to provide a student who is at least 16 years old at the end of the taxation year with skills for (or improve the student's skills in) an occupation, paid to an educational institution in Canada certified by the Minister of Human Resources Development (see Master List of Designated Educational Institutions on HRSDC website) Tuition fees for a student in full-time attendance at a university outside Canada for a course, of at least 13 consecutive weeks in duration, leading to a degree Tuition fees, if they total more than $100, for courses at a post-secondary school level paid to a university, college or other educational institution in the United States to which a student living near the Canada-United States border commutes The textbooks tax credit is an additional tax credit starting in 2006, similar to the education tax credit, for textbooks. #3 Tax Refunds Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) says it takes about 2 weeks to process returns filed using NetFile, EFile, or Telefile, but they do not start processing returns until mid-February. Insurance 101

Q. Should I Purchase Term Coverage Outside Of My Employer’s Group Plan?

A. If your employer is paying the cost of your life insurance plan then it is only to your benefit to accept it. If you have to incur a cost then you certainly should compare it with the cost of the other plans outside of the group. Many times a group plan can be easy to enroll in but the costs are actually more expensive depending on the overall age of the group. Even if your Employer plan has cost benefits, experts feel you should have no more than 50% of the coverage you need through your employer group plan. This is because most plans are not portable. Therefore, if you leave employment you will either lose your coverage or have to medically re-qualify at a time when you need the coverage the most. Additionally, many group plans also have benefit reductions as you get older, usually dropping the benefit coverage when you reach age 60 or older.

B. If you want to make sure you’re getting the best deal or if you’d like to see what adding some coverage would cost give us a call. It’s easy to get a quote and you might be surprised at how low the cost is for a lot of coverage.

4 Habits To

Avoid For

Better Teeth

You brush twice a day and floss (well most of the time); that’s great, both are key to keeping your pearly whites clean, strong and healthy. There are four bad habits you might have, that can destroy all your good ones:

No showing the dentist. At least 20% of Americans have one or more untreated cavities. Ignored, cavities can get larger, deeper and cause severe aches, infection or even tooth loss. Don’t wait for pain to see the dentist; schedule regular checkups and cleanings once or twice a year. And be sure to tell your dentist about medicines you take: Dry mouth — a common cause of cavities in older adults — is a side effect in about 500 drugs, including those for allergies, asthma, blood pressure, cholesterol, pain and Alzheimer’s disease. To relieve dry-mouth symptoms, drink more water or chew sugar-free gum.

Sweet Tooth. Bacteria in your mouth that feed on the

sugar in sodas and sweetened fruit drinks make acids that attack tooth enamel for up to 20 minutes after you’re done drinking, says the American Dental Association. Repeated attacks weaken enamel, leading to cavities and sensitive teeth. Research also suggests that the high acidity of energy and sports drinks can erode enamel. The best tooth-friendly thirst-quencher is water — preferably with fluoride. This mineral occurs naturally in all water sources, and research shows it helps prevent cavities. Check bottled water labels for fluoride; if you use a filter for tap water, get one that doesn’t remove fluoride.

Banish old Brushes. They’re less effective at cleaning; plus the bristles may breed bacteria. Replace your brush every three to four months, sooner if it’s frayed, and right after you’ve had a cold, flu, mouth infection or sore throat. More tips: Choose a soft-bristled brush with a small head to get at hard-to-reach spots; brush in circular motions with fluoride toothpaste.

Teeth as Tools. You know you’ve done it, biting things open— a bag of chips, a piece of tape or even a price tag on new clothes. Not a good idea: Your tooth could crack, which hurts; and if the nerve in a cracked tooth gets damaged or infected, you might need a root canal.

Well spring is here and the snow is all melting that is so exciting for everyone especially me. So many things to check out and sniff but that nice lush grass that I was so used to last year is not looking the greatest right now. Here are Seven Simple Steps to a healthy lawn that we love to play on! 1. Aerate and control thatch . Aerate in the spring and fall before top dressing or fertilizing. 2. Improve soil quality by topdressing Use good quality top soil ¼ - ½ inch consisting of loam, peat moss

and compost. 3. Over-seed with drought-tolerant grasses. Best time is early fall but can be done in spring if winter damage. 4. Mow frequently and at the correct height. Mow 6-8 cm (approx. 3”) Keep Mower Blades sharp 5. Fertilize twice a year. Very important provides nutrients to out grow weeds, use slow release type, use a

spreader. Apply a 4-1-2 ratio Nitrogen needs to be applied each year , Phosphorus and potassium are stable in soil. Late fall fertilization is best to increase fall and spring root growth. Timing is critical . Follow up late May and early June

6. Spot Check for Weeds and Insects. 7. Irrigating. Water only if very dry
