Building a new Chase Farm Hospital

The redevelopment of Chase Farm Hospital is a key priority for us over the next three yearsThe current Chase Farm Hospital buildings are not fit for 21st century healthcare and must be replaced to ensure that we can offer our patients their care in efficient and modern surroundings.

We estimate that the current site loses £1 million every 17 days. An example of one of the many inefficiencies is the heating system which loses 50% of its energy.

The services we provide at Chase Farm were agreed as part of the Barnet, Enfield and Haringey clinical strategy. How the trust provides these services and in what kind of accommodation is currently being

discussed and we want the views of staff, residents and other local stakeholders.

After years of uncertainty it is very important to ensure that the trust gets the redevelopment of Chase Farm right for local people. We are engaging on all elements of the build, including where it will be placed and the design style and height of the new building.

Plans to transform Chase Farm Hospital by replacing its ageing buildings with modern healthcare facilities took a major step forward on 12 March 2015 when planning permission was granted by Enfield Council, subject to conditions being agreed. The outline business case was also approved by the government.

The redevelopment will see the existing hospital, which is in a poor condition and spread across 37 acres, rebuilt to a high standard. This will improve the hospital environment for both patients and staff.

The unanimous decision by Enfield’s planning committee also means that the area will benefit from additional homes, including affordable housing and key worker accommodation, and a new three-form primary school.

Once the final details of the scheme are agreed between the council and the trust – which has

managed the hospital since July 2014 - the main construction works will start in early 2016

and finish in 2018. See the timeline at the bottom of this page. All the services the hospital currently provides will remain open throughout the work.

Timeline

The project team have been working closely with senior clinicians and operational staff to ensure plans for the new build are patient centred and will work for the foreseeable future.

On 8 and 9 October at Saracens Rugby Club in Hendon, 130 clinicians and senior managers were given the latest information on our plans to develop the site. They were asked for their input into shaping the facilities - to ensure the best environment for the people of Enfield.

Following the event, a number of recommendations were made to allow the brief for the redevelopment to be finalised.

These included the provision of:

• rehabilitation wards• a range of out-patient clinics (including maternity

and paediatric out-patients)• musculoskeletal therapies• phlebotomy• pharmacy• elective surgery both day and overnight stay

including a high dependency unit, in-patient wards and theatres

• a planned investigation and treatment unit• an urgent care centre• a paediatric assessment unit• an older persons assessment unit• endoscopy

As well as involving staff in the redevelopment, we plan to continue to involve local residents and stakeholders. In addition to the opening of the redevelopment hub (more details available on the back page) we held dedicated stakeholder and resident events in July, September and November last year, and held an additional stakeholder event this March. As part of our commitment to keep staff, patients and visitors informed about the redevelopment we have opened a ‘Chase Farm redevelopment hub’ outside the Clocktower.

The hub is open Wednesday – Friday from noon – 4pm. You can view the planning application, find out about the latest developments and ask staff any questions you may have about the project.

When the hub is closed, questions can be posted in a box outside and they will be passed on to the redevelopment team.

A key part of providing services for local people is to improve health and wellbeing by supporting people to protect and improve their own health.

Some of the services we are developing for Chase Farm include:

ALCOHOL SCREENING IN THE URGENT CARE CENTRE – all patients admitted to the centre over the age of 16 will be asked to complete a questionnaire on their alcohol intake. The aim is to identify those at risk of hazardous or harmful intake of alcohol and reduce future harm by providing advice and support from an alcohol care team.

SMOKING SCREENING – all in-patients over the age of 14 years will be asked about their smoking status and if identified as being a smoker will be given brief advice on the benefits of quitting and offered a referral to the trust smoking cessation team. We are also enforcing Chase Farm Hospital as a smoke-free site - smoking is not permitted on hospital grounds in order to protect vulnerable patients from the harmful effects of second hand smoke.

VACCINATIONS – we are looking to improve understanding and awareness of vaccinations and offer opportunistic vaccinations for children, adults and staff including the flu jab.
