www.challengenavitus.org.ukThe website of Challenge NavitusChallenge Navitus is a campaign group set up by the public toexamine, scrutinise and block the proposed windfarm off the Dorsetcoast. The group provides alternative pictures, graphics and videos ofthe windfarm, and offers further information to local people than thatprovided by Navitus Bay Development Limited (NCDL). The websitealso gives people instruction about how to register their opposition tothe windfarm. Indeed, there is currently a consultation underway

which is taking views from the public until April 5 th.Conor recently wrote to NBDL asking why they thought local peoplesconcerns had been addressed by their announcement that the numberor turbines had been reduced (although they have previously refusedto say how many there were going to be), that the height had beenreduced (although they had previously refused to say how high theywere going to be), and that the distance from the shore had beenincreased (although they had previously refused to say how far from

the shore the windfarm would be).

Conor visited Bournemouth Traincare Depot in Westbourne recently,to see their multimillion pound spending programme in action.

The Bournemouth plant, built in 1966, will carry out a 23 millionoverhaul of South West Trains entire class 455 fleet which operatesuburban routes around London. South West Trains won the contractto refurbish the fleet, which are leased to them by Porterbrook,

towards the end of last year.As well as bringing the total number employed on the site to over 100,the investment has seen the building of a 3.2 million paint shed forthe depot. This will mean Bournemouth will become a one stop shopfor the painting of South West Trains trains.Commenting after the visit Conor said, I congratulate South WestTrains in securing this investment and am delighted with the local jobsit has created. I was hugely impressed by the professionalism of thestaff and the decision to refurbish the trains here in Bournemouthrightly reflects the high quality work they do.

Conor in the papers:Time to tackle high-stakes gamblingmachines?Bournemouth Echo

    Tuesday 29th January 2013

An MP has vowed to help reviewthe issue of addictive high stakesslot machines amid claims puntersare spending 1.17m per day in Dorset.

The Campaign for Fairer Gambling says 427 million was fed intohigh-stakes betting machines at bookmakers across parliamentaryconstituencies in and surrounding Bournemouth and Poole last year. The Association of British Bookmakers has dismissed the figures asflawed because they are based on estimates of turnover at themachines rather than actual money spent. But the Campaign maintains that a change is needed to lower themaximum spend in each machine. At the moment, gamblers can stakeup to 100 every 20 seconds. The CFG would like that reduced to 2and the time between games increased.

Conor Burns is Conservative MP for Bournemouth West, wherethe figures estimate that 118m spent in just 80 machines morethan 4,000 per machine perday, the highest in the region.Mr Burns said the Commons Culture and Media Select Committee, ofwhich he is a member, is looking at a draft of a new gambling bill inparliament. He said: These machines are highly addictive and are particularlyprofitable as they return so little to those who are putting money intothem. We are looking into this as a committee.Mr Burns said in the economic downturn people are increasinglyattracted to the get rich fast options. The ABB claims 97 per cent of cash inserted into the machines is paidback out but the Campaign for Fairer Gambling disagrees.427, 074, 527 was estimated to be spent across the parliamentaryconstituencies of Bournemouth East, Bournemouth West, Poole, MidDorset and North Poole, Christchurch, South Dorset and North Dorset.

In a statement the ABB dismissed the figures, saying only three percent of the figure estimated is spent by their customers around12.8m.

Tories lose crunch vote on reformsJames Waterson, City A.M

Wednesday 30th January 2013The Conservatives will find it almostimpossible to win the 2015 generalelection, polling companies warned lastnight, after their Liberal Democratcoalition partners scuppered plans to reform constituency boundariesand reduce the number of MPs in parliament.

Lib Dems joined Labour and the smaller parties to vote in favour ofdelaying the boundary reform package until the next parliament by amargin of 334 to 292.To get more than a single seat majority in 2015, Cameron now needsa poll lead hes really not going to get, Anthony Wells, associatedirector of YouGov, told City A.M.With the new boundaries the Conservatives would have just neededto hold the votes they got in 2010. Now they need to gain an extra 20seats.Existing constituencies have electorates of wildly varying sizes, with

the number of voters in English seats ranging from 45,000 in WirralWest to 91,000 in East Ham.The current arrangement benefits Labour, and the 2010 coalitionagreement included a commitment to equalise the size of electoratesand cut the number of MPs from 650 to 600.Despite this Nick Clegg ordered his MPs to vote against the measurein retaliation to last summers backbench Conservative rebellion thatkilled House of Lords reform.Last night angry Tory MPs told City A.M. that they were infuriated by

Cleggs decision to abandon collective responsibility for governmentpolicies.Colleagues were fizzing with indignation, said Conor Burns, MP forBournemouth West, who had to resign from the government to voteagainst Lords reform.[In 2015] we will go out with a renewed zeal to take down Lib DemMPs. Nick Clegg has proved again that he is leading a party moresuited to student union politics than national politics.Robert Halfon, MP for Harlow, said yesterdays result was a shamefulday for our democracy.

The Lib Dems and Labour have voted for an unfair system and votedagainst genuine representative democracy. If the reforms had gonethrough it would have saved the taxpayer millions of pounds byreducing the number of MPs.

But Labours Sadiq Khan insisted the plans had been selfish andpartisan, adding David Cameron should try to win elections fair andsquare and not by moving the goalposts.YouGovs Wells suggests that the Conservatives will now need a poll

lead of 11.1 per cent to win an overall majority of seats in the House ofCommons at the next general election, assuming a uniform swing inthe vote. By contrast Labour will need a poll lead of just 2.9 per cent toachieve the same result. The most recent YouGov poll gives Labour a six per cent lead.
