What next for the IMAX?The doomed IMAX cinema complex in Bournemouth will be soondemolished to the delight of many Bournemouth residents. The muchcriticised building has almost unanimously been proclaimed as beingan eyesore. Residents cite the fact that the building obstructs themuch loved Bournemouth sea views. This has led to such strongfeeling that groups of residents have been campaigning against thecomplex since it first opened in 2002.

After 10 years of the onetime Englands worst building winner, the

council has agreed to demolish the site that closed in 2005. It hasbeen announced that the site will cost around 2 million to demolishand will be funded by money left over from the initial 8.5 millionbudget. However, its demolition raisesan altogether new question:what next? Local MP ConorBurns has worked closely withtripadvisor.co.uk inestablishing a poll to discoverwhat Bournemouth residentswished to see the site beingused for. The results are in thetable to the right. In the meantime, the IMAX sitewill be temporarily used as ageneral area for sportingevents, theatre performances, music and dance displays andeven possibly to televise sporting or national events to a largeaudience. Leader of the Council, Councillor John Beesley said that thechanges made would be very exciting after admitting local people willbe glad to see the back of the IMAX building. The new site is plannedto be ready for summer 2013.

Conor with actor and author Charlie Higson and pupils fromSt Lukes School promoting the Summer Reading Challenge.

Conor Burns MP is supporting a campaign run by The Reading

Agency to encourage all primary school children to join their locallibrary and take part in this years Summer Reading Challenge - theUKs biggest reading promotion for primary school children.

The Challenge which began on 14 July is for every child aged 4-11years to read six books of their choice from their local library duringthe summer holidays. Children earn stickers along the way and will begiven a certificate or Olympic style medal when they complete the

Challenge. This is the 14th year of the Challenge and this year thetheme is Story Lab which is set in a city hosting the Olympic Gameswww.story-lab.org.uk.Over 20 popular childrens authors are supporting the campaignincluding childrens laureate Julia Donaldson and fellow award-winning writers Malorie Blackman, Charlie Higson, Anthony Horowitz,Michael Morpurgo, Michael Rosen and Jacqueline Wilson.

Conor Burns said; I hope parents and carers in Bournemouth Westwill take their children to their local library this summer and if theyarent already members sign up and do the Summer ReadingChallenge. Its free and makes reading fun, a vital ingredient inbuilding literacy. Last year 3,725 children in Bournemouth took part inthe Challenge. I hope we will beat that figure this year and show locallibraries how much we value them. This year libraries will be linking the Challenge to the London 2012Olympic and Paralympic Games, as it is an official project in theLondon 2012 Festival - the finale of the Cultural Olympiadwww.london2012.com/festival. Details of local events are availablefrom local libraries.

Miranda McKearney, Chief Executive of The Reading Agency said,With so much pressure on libraries, this year of all years is the time tosupport the work libraries do to inspire children to enjoy reading.Research shows that children who use libraries are twice as likely tobe above average readers and that children who take part in theChallenge go back to school with improved reading skills and a boostto their confidence.Justin Tomlinson MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group onLibraries said; An international reading and literacy study found thatonly 40% of English children were keen readers as opposed to 64% ofItalians. Its really important that we tackle this as reading for pleasure

is a more important determinant of childrens educational successthan their familys socio-economic status Tony Durcan of the Society of Chief Librarians said; The SummerReading Challenge showcases how libraries are modernising the waythey support childrens reading. It combines a fun, incentivisedchallenge with book talking support from library staff and teenagevolunteers, lots of live events, and a fantastic website: www.story-lab.org.uk.

Annie Mauger, Chief Executive of the Chartered Institute of Library &Information Professionals said: The Summer Reading Challenge isan incredible initiative and great way of encouraging children andyoung people to keep reading and using their library over the summer.Knowledgeable, passionate and skilled library staff in schools and

public libraries are so important to engage children with exciting booksand brilliant writing. This year the Challenge is also a Childrens University validatedlearning activity. Children enrolled in a Childrens University can gettheir passports stamped at their local library and earn up to ten hoursof Childrens University learning if they complete the Challenge. They will be able to earn a further four hours if they completeadditional activities organised by local libraries. The hours will counttowards Childrens University certificates.

Burns: Social care revolution will help

families in Bournemouth and PooleConor Burns MP has welcomed the Governments proposals totransform social care, which were published last week. The currentsystem is variable, with different services and standards in differentparts of the country, and it can place huge financial obligations uponfamilies. When the new measures are introduced:

Nobody will have to sell their home in their lifetime to pay for

    social care.

200 million will be invested to create specialised housing for

    the elderly.

Patients will be given access to personal health budgets to

improve choice and entitlements to care.

More care workers will be trained to ensure all elderly people

are treated with the care and dignity they deserve.

Although deferred payments for social care are available in someparts of the country, recent figures show that this only applies to 14.7per cent of those paying for social care in Bournemouth and 8.8% inPoole. From 2015, everybody will be able defer the costs of theirresidential care.Commenting, Conor Burns MP said: Almost every family is aware ofthe costs of care in old age. Once these changes are implemented,we will no longer see local people being forced to sell their homes to

pay for residential care. Its the biggest overhaul of the social care system in more than 60years and it will make a huge difference to vulnerable patients here inBournemouth and Poole.

Conor welcomes radical new plans tospeed up the adoption systemConor Burns MP has welcomed bold new Government plans to speedup the adoption system with a foster-first policy for couples who areapproved to adopt but who can still face long waits for paperwork tobe completed. The announcement, which comes as the latest official figures showthat there were 200 children in Bournemouth and 135 children inPoole who were in the care system last year, is designed to reduceradically the times it takes for a baby to move in with their permanentfamily. Local authorities will be obliged to consider placing childrenwith carers who have the potential to become their adoptive parents, rather than in temporary homes, meaning more babies will be movedinto permanent homes more quickly.Building on a range of measures already introduced to improve theadoption system, it will form a key element of the Governments visionto ensure that more babies and children can benefit from a stable andloving family environment.Commenting, Conor said: Most of us probably sometimes take it forgranted that we are surrounded by a loving family to support usthrough the good times and the bad. It is absolutely vital to do all wecan to help the hundreds of children in Bournemouth and Poole who

dont so that they can find one as soon as possible."David Cameron's announcement last year that we would radicallyalter the adoption system was universally welcomed, and I'm delightedwith the progress that has been made by the Government already. This announcement will further speed up the process of creatingloving and supportive families in Bournemouth, Poole and all overBritain, which is fantastic for them and great news for society as awhole."

DVLA Offices in Poole set to closeThe offices of the DVLA in Poole are to close between the autumns ofthis year and the next to the disdain of staff and customers alike. Asmany as 64 staff could potentially be made redundant when theseclosures are enforced. This office is just one of 39 that are destined tobe close in a governmental attempt to save 28 million a year. This particular branch has been popular with people not only in theBournemouth area, but even with people living as distantly as Yeovil. From its opening in 2004, the branchs success has been largely dueto its ever present popularity with the elderly; many of whom prefer totalk to a DVLA employee in person rather than via a phone.

The news of its imminent closure has been met with disappointmentfrom Conor Burns MP who claimed that there was a compelling casefor the office to remain open given its popularity and, perhaps moresignificantly, its importance to the local community.

    Bid to turn Poole's Remploy

factory into business hubDarren Slade, Bournemouth Echo

Wednesday 18th July 2012Supporters of Pooles threatenedRemploy factory hope to save it asa centre where small businessescan thrive. The Alder Hills site, which currently has 16 staff with disabilities, wasamong 36 which the government put at risk of closure. But it emerged last week that Alder Hills was one of nine sites whichhad attracted bids from potential buyers.Giles Verdon, the Poole factorys social enterprises manager, isleading the bid for the site.We hope to make it a social enterprise incubator hub, he said. The site would help businesses get started and offer them a range ofexpert advice. We want to make the site a centre of excellence for support services, like solicitors and accountants, who can talk to future customers andfuture clients so they can benefit from good advice in a mutual way, said Mr Verdon.

The government aims to complete negotiations with potential biddersby the end of September and has offered a package of incentives tosupport eligible bids.Mr Verdon said: There are several options on the table and werenegotiating as to which ones work best for everyone. Weve got 16members of staff who are vulnerable. The existing employees already have a niche business selling theirsewing services and Mr Verdon hopes his bid will win them moreorders for their factory.

The thing we need more than anything else is for local businesses toconsider us first before going anywhere else. Were capable of makingthings and doing things, he added.Weve had some fantastic support from people like Lush .He hopes the proposed hub will appeal to people looking to turn theirpassions into businesses but wary of the overheads and bureaucracy.Bournemouth West MP Conor Burns, whose constituency includes thefactory, has sought indications from the government that theSeptember deadline might be flexible if bids need more time.

Government minister Maria Miller said the Department for Work andPensions would take the time that is needed to make sure thatbidders get the information that they need and access to the supportthat is there for them.Mr Burns said: Were still going, were still in business and were notautomatically shutting.
