NEWSBULLETIN ISRAEL INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDIES Sept-Oct 2016 Issues 1&2 2016 Michael Bruno Award Conference The Second Israeli Workshop for Women in Mathematics Awards Research Group Research Groups for 2016/17 The 2016 IIAS Advanced School in Humanities focused on human dignity. Held as an Intercontinental Academia - a UBIAS (University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study) initiative, jointly with ZiF Center for Interdisciplinary Research, it hosted 20 outstanding research fellows from around the world and internationally renowned senior scholars. Co-directed by Michal Linial (IIAS) and Ulrike Davy (ZiF), the Academia included two phases: Phase I, in March 2016, took place at IIAS, Jerusalem, and Phase II, in August, at ZiF, Bielefeld. During the laer, fellows presented their own research and insights on human dignity, including Anna Konik, a former artist-in-residence at ZiF, who presented her video work on refugee women re-telling their stories. Upcoming Events www.as.huji.ac.il IIAS WEBSITE: November 6- 11, 2016 ~ 20th Midrasha Mathematicae - 60 Faces to Groups On September 2016 we opened the academic year with two research groups of scholars from diverse backgrounds, who will stay with us for 10 months. The first group, organized by Esther Eshel (Bar-Ilan U.) and Menahem Kister (HUJI), focuses on Jewish, Christian, and Early Muslim Traditions under the title of “From Creation to Sinai: Genesis and Exodus in Antiquity”. The second research group, on “Jewish Women’s Cultural Capital”, covers the Late Middle Ages through early Twentieth Century, and is organized by Moshe Rosman (Bar-Ilan U.). Both research groups have already launched an intensive schedule of weekly seminars and informal gatherings, toward collaborations that provide new opportunities for productive synergy. They have also been introduced to their new home at the IIAS and to the beautiful grounds of the Edmond J. Safra Campus of Givat Ram with a botanical tour led by Jeff Kimchi, and a visit to the exhibition in the nearby museum on the archeological site of Khirbet Qeiyafa guided by Isaiah Gafni. A third research group, organized by Uri Hershberg (Drexel U.) will join IIAS in April 2017 for three months of research on “Stochasticity and Control in the Dynamics and Diversity of Immune Repertories” The Michael Bruno Memorial Award was created in honor of the late Professor Michael Bruno, a leading economics scholar and former governor of the Bank of Israel. The first awards were granted in 1999. This year, the Board of Directors, headed by Michal Linial, selected the following: Elisheva Baumgarten (HUJI) – Jewish history Roy Kishony (Technion) - Systems biology Limor Shifman (HUJI) - Social science and communication We are proud to note that in the past five years, 44% of the recipients of this prestigious prize are women. The prize will be awarded in a ceremony that will take place at IIAS on January 18, 2017. How do nutrient distributions contribute to primate abundance? What are the nutritional factors that facilitate the coexistence of primate species? These were the topics that Jessica Rothman discussed in her lecture. Jessica conducts her field work in the forests of Uganda, where she has been doing research since 1997. She was a visiting scholar in the Research Group on “Health and the Environment“ organized by Dror Hawlena (HUJI).
