Thirty participants were trained, among whom fourteen were from OUT and sixteen came from other institutions. The Acting Director of OCB Dr. Emmanuel Mallya, who coordinated the training, said that OCB prepared the programme to enable participants from within and outside the University to get necessary skills and techniques that are important in the analysis of social phenomena. He expressed the determination of his Directorate to contribute in building the capacity of various professionals in different areas of expertise. The DVC for Learning Technologies and Regional Services Prof. Modest Varisanga, who was representing the VC during the opening session, encouraged participants to utilize the opportunity to enhance their research skills. In his remarks, he urged participants to use the opportunity to obtain skills that will enable them to do different kinds of research studies properly. He assimilated research skills with driving a car; saying that anybody is required to have a driving license to be recognized as a driver, likewise, researchers need the necessary skills to be able to deliver in various research assignments. FBM establishes a newAcademic Journal

The Faculty of Business Management (FBM)at OUT organized a three days workshop on“Structural Transformation and IndustrialPolicy” from 23rd to 25th February.

The workshop, which was conducted incollaboration with the United Nations Conferenceon Trade and Development (UNCTAD), wascoordinated by FBM staff Mr. France Shayo and

Ms. Akinyi Sassi. UNCTAD was representedby Dr. Piergiuseppe Fortunato who was theworkshop facilitator. The UNCTAD virtualinstitute facilitated the workshop in its effortsto strengthen research capacities in developingcountries.

The acting Deputy Vice Chancellor for AcademicProf. Cornelia Muganda was the Guest of Honourduring the opening session and also issuedcerticates to the participants on the closing day.

A total of 32 participants from various Ministries,Institutions and Organizations in the countryparticipated in the workshop. Participants camefrom OUT, the Ministry of Industry and Trade,University of Dar es Salaam, Ardhi University,National Institute of Transportation, Centre for

Foreign Relations, the Ministry of Livestock andFisheries Development, the Ministry of ForeignAffairs, Regional and International Cooperation,Mzinga Corporation and the East Africa ResearchCapacity Development Foundation.

The objective of the workshop was to providean overview of the process of structuraltransformation and its linkages with development,

and to equip participants with knowledge of thekey policies that could accelerate the gradualtransformation of the economic structure ofdeveloping economies.

Issues covered during the training were,structural transformation, industrial policy andeconomic development, growth diagnostics,industrial policy in open economy strategic tradeintegration, Regional/South-South integration,innovation policies, structural transformationin Tanzania and economic transformation inresource abundant economies.

Generally the workshop was successfullyconducted, with a good attendance. Participantsgot a chance to network during a cocktail partyon the closing day.

DCM Marketing Ofcers launch a massivemarketing campaign for OUT programmes

Marketing Ofcers at the Directorate ofCommunications and Marketing (DCM) have

launched a massive campaign to market OUT

academic programmes around the Dar es SalaamCity. The campaign, which has so far been conductedfor two weeks (8th to 24th February), involvedvisitations to various Ministries and Schools forthe purpose of advertising academic programmesand creating awareness to staff and students on thehigher learning opportunities available at the OUT.

The marketing team had an objective of winninggroups of prospective clients, which are staff in thepublic service in need of further education to meetthe global competence at the working environment,and may not be aware of the OUT. A special focuswas given to teachers in both secondary and primaryschools together with their students, who comprisea future clientele for the University. Primary schoolteachers were specically impressed by the Diplomain Primary Teacher Education and a special campaignis planned for this programme, which might involveacademic staff from the Institute of ContinuingEducation for more insights. In a visit to TambazaSecondary School, the team was accompanied byone Admission Ofcer Ms. Evelyne Shipela, whogave details on the application procedures to various

undergraduate programmes at the University.

Visited Ministries included the Prime minister’s

Ofce, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Educationand Vocational Training, Ministry of Energy andMinerals, Ministry of Health and Social Welfare,Ministry of Lands, Housing and Human SettlementsDevelopment and the Ministry of CommunityDevelopment, Gender and Children. Other visitedinstitutions were the Tanzania Public Service Collegeand the Tanzania Prisons (TPS) Head Quarters.A special campaign will be planned for the TPS toreach staff and inmates in other regions’ prisons.

The marketing team specically spoke with HumanResources ofcers, convincing them to encouragetheir staff to upgrade themselves by joining OUT,where they can study while working. The teamshared information on various issues includingoffered programmes, required qualications forthe programmes, fees structures and students’support systems at OUT such as the e-learning.They distributed programme brochures, handbooks,newsletters and the OUT annual activities reportbooklet. They also received different comments,complaints, suggestions as well as advices on how toimprove our services.

February University Examination session successfully conducted

The University Examination session ofFebruary 2016 has been successfully

conducted, with 8,876 students sitting fortheir Main Timed Test (MTT), SupplementaryExaminations (SUPP), and Special AnnualExaminations (S-AE) in 44 examination centres.

This is according to the Director of ExaminationSyndicate (DES) Dr. Yohana Lawi.

The examination sessions, which took placefrom 25th January to 12th February 2016, werevery well conducted in all examination centerswithin and outside the country. According toDr. Lawi, this year’s sessions included twonew local centers of Geita and Serengeti. Theinternational centers involved were Qatar,Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Kenya, USA and Zambia,and for the rst time NACTE students fromIEMT were involved in the examinationsessions.

The Iringa Regional Centreonce again held a ceremony

to congratulate its members whograduated from various programmesin the academic year 2014/15.

The ceremony, which was held atthe centre’s premises, is used asa marketing strategy to promote

OUT around the region, and alsoas a motivation tool for continuingstudents. One hundred and nine(109) students registered at theIringa Regional Centre graduatedfrom various degree and non-degreeprogramme in the academic year2014/15.

The Guest of Honour during theceremony was the District EducationalOfcer, who was represented byone of his ofcers, Mr. Stephen

Luhambati. Giving his remarks, theDEO insisted on the importance ofopen and distance learning to bothpublic and private workers, followingthe ceremony theme ‘‘ODL forProfessional Development of PublicServants’’. The Guest of Honour alsocalled upon OUT to reach out tomore people and market its academicprogrammes in order to attract morepeople around Iringa Region to join.

During the ceremony, the graduandshad an opportunity to share their

success stories. “ODL requires selfdiscipline, hardworking and selfcommitment. These are the only toolsthat made me nish my BachelorDegree in Laws for three years, witha good performance” commented

The Director of Iringa RegionalCentre Rev. Dr. Lechion PeterKimilike also emphasized selfdiscipline as a cornerstone to success

in open and distance learning. He alsowished success to the new graduatesand called upon them to be goodambassadors of OUT. This is thesecond time that the centre holds sucha ceremony, following a similar onelast academic year.
