News for parents, carers, pupils, students of the Academy and the community of Paignton
April 2013
News from the Principal
Amazing Season For TUFC Development As Programme Draws To Close
The Academy’s Torquay United Football Development Programme is enjoying the most successful
season since the link was forged in 2007, with the squad on the verge of accomplishing an
unprecedented ‘treble’.
Already crowned South West College’s Champions, the squad requires just one point from their
remaining two league games to clinch the British College’s Sport South West League title. The
squad are all members of the 6th Form made up of made up from a combination of locally sourced
players, in conjunction with players acquired from across the entire nation. They have bonded
superbly and produced some fantastic performances which has seen them claim some notable
victories against South Devon College, Ivybridge Community College and even current ‘League 1A’
Champions Merchants’ Sports Academy from Bristol who were defeated by an amazing 7 – 3
margin in the recent South West Area Cup Final. In pursuit of their third piece of silverware, the
U18s Devon County Cup, Paignton must overcome Plymouth’s Plymstock School.
The current squad have developed massively under the expert coaching of Nick Milton and have
also benefitted from the input of former Premier League custodian Robbie Herrera. Players who
impress are given the opportunity to train and in some cases play for Torquay United’s Youth
Apprentices and even senior reserve squads. 2009 graduate Saul Halpin went all the way and
became the initiative’s first full professional player.
The programme is open to all Sixth Form applicants showing an interest in football. Enrolled
players undertake daily lessons followed by 2 hours of professional football coaching. With all
graduates enjoying a 100% BTEC pass rate, it is clear that lessons are being learned in the
classroom as well as on the football pitch. Proud course leader Mr Clark beamed “over the past
few years, it has been great to see so many students enrol in the programme and take such big
strides in developing their education as well as their football ability. We have had graduates who
have signed professional football contracts at home and abroad as well as many who have gained
places at university or won football scholarships in the USA.”
Positions for the 2013-14 season are still available and all interested students are encouraged to
apply via the academy website.

A Message from the Principal
We return from the Easter break with some excellent news
regarding GCSE results.
Exam Results
We have already secured 55% A*- C Grades in GCSE Maths
following recent exam results. English Language results
stand at 64% A* - C Grades providing the Examination
Board do not move the grade boundaries as they did last
year. This means our overall 5 or more A* - C grades stand at 49% which is
3% up on last year and very close to our target of 50%. However, we are still
very much on the case: staff and pupils are working hard and we are
anticipating further improvements and hope to exceed our target.
Leadership Team
We have recently recruited to the Leadership Team at the Academy. I am
delighted to report that Mr Jason Trevarthen has been promoted to Deputy
Principal and Mrs Vicki Rogers from Northfield School in Stockton-on-Tees has
been appointed Assistant Principal. Mr Trevarthen takes up his post as of 1st
June and Mrs Rogers from the 1st September.
Parental Views
We are always keen to know Parents’ views about how we do things in school
and would be pleased if you would complete the enclosed questionnaire and
return it to the Head of Year via your son or daughter, by the 8th May 2013.
Parent Governor Vacancy
There will soon be a vacancy for a Parent Governor at the Academy. Please
see the letter enclosed with this Newsletter for more information.
Newsletter on line
This newsletter looks much nicer in full colour. It is available on-line at:
www.paigntoncommunitycollege.com/latest-news/.
In future we will contact parents by Schoolcomms to advise you a new
publication is ready to view and give you the link.
If you have not signed up for Schoolcomms and would like to do so please let
us have your e-mail address or mobile telephone number which should be sent
to the appropriate Head of Year.
The Summer Term is always a busy, but enjoyable, term and we have a range
of celebration events during the next few weeks. It is always lovely to be able

Maximising Progress
A revised Marking Policy is now being used
across the Academy to support student progress
and learning. Teaching staff ensure all students
are aware of their current level in individual
subjects, their target level and most importantly,
what they have done well and how to improve.
Already we have had very positive feedback from
our young people. A year 8 student
commented, “ this is excellent, it is the same in
all subjects and I know exactly what to do to
improve.” If Parents or Guardians are able to
further support learning by looking at content
and presentation of workbooks, homework and
marking, it has also been proven to have very
beneficial impact.
The following stamp is used when work and
books are marked.
Effort grade
Attainment grade or level.
What has been done well.
What to do in order to progress -
next steps.
This is where students write a
response to the teacher. Eg
explaining they have understood
the feedback and how they will act
on it. If they have any questions
about the feedback or need any
additional explanation, it should be
included here.
‘Macbeth’ Performance and Workshop Trip On the 13th March, 46 students from Year 7 – 11 ventured to Studio 1, Dartington Hall for a
performance and workshop of Shakespeare’s famous play ‘Macbeth.’ This is what their teacher
said:
“Not quite knowing what to expect we were ushered in to a dark room with a raised stage in the
middle. We sat on mats around the stage and waited for it to begin…
This is what the pupils said, “It was awesome! It had lots of props to make it feel real and they
made fake blood for when Macbeth killed King Duncan, Banquo and Macduff’s children. It looked
really realistic and you could feel the blood come on you. All of the stuff they used for the lighting
made it feel really scary and on the part where the witches came in, it felt like they were creeping
around you but you could not see them.’
We were led through the story
by the Porter, who explained
what was going on throughout
the play. We witnessed fights
and betrayals, were splattered
with blood and had a ringside
seat to watch the madness and
mayhem. The performance was
followed by a workshop where
students could question the ac-
tors in character and then the
actors themselves. Some excel-
lent student questions ranged
from ‘How do you make the fake
blood?’ to ‘Macbeth, how do you
feel about Lady Macbeth after
the murder of King Duncan?’
The students thoroughly enjoyed
the day and took away from it
not just a better understanding of the play, but an awareness that Shakespeare can be fun, wild
and dangerous.”

Change to Uniform Ordering System A reminder that the system for ordering your son/daughter’s uniform has changed.
Our supplier will now be embroidering items of both PE kit and uniform to order. This will mean that the turnaround time for your order to be ready for collection will increase to between two to three weeks.
We will continue to hold a small supply of uniform here at the Academy, but on a far small-er scale than in previous years. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee that we will have the item of clothing you require unless you have pre-ordered, either online or by handing in an order form to the Reception staff.
6th Form raise Money for Red Nose Day
6th Form students (pictured) promoted the
upcoming Travel and Tourism Trip to Disneyland,
Paris early in March and at the same time raised
money for Red Nose Day.
Man Utd Reward Trip
Fourteen pupils from the Academy were
rewarded for good attendance with an
opportunity of a 'life time', when they watched
their beloved team, Man Utd, take on Norwich
City at Old Trafford, at the beginning of March.
Sitting high in the Sir Alex Ferguson stand
among 76,000 fans, the pupils watched Man
Utd win 4-0 with Kagawa scoring a hat-trick,
and Rooney slotting a wonderful dig into the
net from outside the box.
Mr Thomas who was also in attendance said,
"Although I'm a Liverpool fan, you can not help
be impressed when you visit the 'Theatre of
Dreams'. Mrs Jones who runs these
attendance rewards trips, has yet again given
these young people a fantastic opportunity and
it has not disappointed. I noted all of them on
their mobiles after the game, phoning or texting
home to say what a marvellous day they had
had. They were buzzing and I think the long
journey up and back has been worth it:
memories that will last a long time!"
Pupils Bake for Marie Curie Cancer Care
Pupils Nicole Bartell, Bryony Whitehurst, Phoebe
McCaig and Leah Beattie baked a delicious
selection of cakes to sell to staff and pupils to
raise money for 'The Great Daffodil Appeal', a
focus in March for the Marie Curie Cancer Care
charity.
Pupils wrote to me for permission to host the
event and sourced the Daffodil's to sell
alongside the cakes. They were very mature
and organised throughout.
We are very proud of their efforts and they
raised £71 during the day. Well done girls!

Academy Rock School
The Academy Rock School has been based in the
Academy for nearly a year now, offering a free
extracurricular activity on a Monday and
Wednesday after school from 3.00pm to 6.00pm.
All students are welcome as long as they have
the instrumental or vocal skills required, as the
idea is for young musicians to ‘jam’ together and
prepare for shows and concerts in the academy
and in venues around the Bay.
They are led by Mark Wilkins, who brings a
wealth of experience both as a performer and a
producer: Mark is also involved in Torbay Music
Services. Some of the Rock School members are
now involved in performing publicly in other
bands on a regular basis.
Theory of Music Classes
During Key Stage 3 classes, the students are
beginning to read musical notation and have
asked for a new club where they can begin to
learn music theory. They are working through
the Associated Board of Music Grade 1 Theory
Syllabus with a view to taking the exam in the
autumn. These exams can count towards their
overall exam score.
The sessions are free after school on a Tuesday
from 3.15pm to 4.45pm in Room 44 with Mrs
Garner.
Academy Stars raise cash for
Rowcroft Hospice
On the 26 March 2013, an audience of very lucky
people watched in awe as over thirty very
talented Academy pupils performed to raise
money for Rowcroft Hospice. The Concert was
the brainchild of Ryan Harlin and was organised
by the students themselves, who were supported
by the Academy’s Performing Arts Faculty.
The audience were treated to a great programme
of singing and dancing by various performers,
including Ryan himself. Our Key Stage 3
successful Performing Arts Group, also
performed the numbers they sang at the Mixed
Performer's Night as part of the Schools’ Festival
at the International Riviera Centre. We listened
to covers of well known songs but others were
written by the performers themselves.
I am very proud of these young people who are
extremely talented and are putting those talents
to good use to support their community and
provide funds (£443.09) for a wonderful Hospice.
Private Music Lessons
Parents continue to book private music lessons
through the school. Classes include drums,
singing, piano, keyboard, flute, saxophone and
guitar.
Gifted and Talented Trip to Plymouth University
On Monday, 18th March
Paignton Community and
Sports Academy took a group
of 30 students from Years 8
and 9 to Plymouth University
for an inspirational visit. This
day allowed some of our more
academically able KS3
students to have a tour of a
University: for some this was
their first experience of what a University looks
like. The day included an introduction to higher
education, subjects available, facilities, societies
and accommodation.
After arriving at Plymouth, the students were
given a lecture by a leading Mathematics
Professor in one of the lecture theatres. They
were then introduced to some Student
Ambassadors: these are current students
studying at Plymouth. After lunch, our students
took part in a number of interactive sessions
including ‘The Immersion Dome’, a Robotics
session and Science workshop.
Students were able to chat to the Ambassadors
throughout the day and ask questions about life
as a student at University. The Schools Liaison
Officer for Plymouth was very impressed with
the enthusiasm shown by our students. All of
our students enjoyed the day and learning
about what life at University would be like,
many felt it had inspired them to consider going
to University in the future.

E-Safety
Safer Internet
Day
Safer Internet Day (SID) is organised by
Insafe (an online safety awareness-raising
network co-funded by the European
Commission Safer Internet Programme) in
February every year to promote safer and
more responsible use of online technology and
mobile phones, especially among children and
young people across the world. Safer Internet
Day 2013 took place on Tuesday, 5 February
2013.
The College put on events throughout the
week, to bring E-safety to the forefront of all
our minds. The internet hosts many exciting
opportunities for education and the on-line
world is a wonderful place for young people to
explore, with unprecedented opportunities for
learning and creativity, but just like the real
world there are risks and dangers they should
be aware of and which we should all act to
protect them from. As a school we encourage
the use of technology as an important part of
our students’ development but always want
them to spend their time on-line safely.
On Tuesday evening, 5th February, in the 6th
Form Common Room at Borough Road Centre,
the Academy hosted an educational evening
for all parents and carers of both the Academy
and Paignton Primary Schools, entitled ‘Online
Rights and Responsibilities – Connect with
Respect’. During the evening members of staff
presented on all aspects of on-line safety,
including: the use of Social Media such as
Facebook, Mobile Technology, On-line Gaming,
Instant Messaging, Cyber-bullying and Digital
Footprints/On-line Reputation.
During the week the students took part in Year
Assemblies about E-safety and all IT lessons
encouraged pupils to consider what their
online rights were. Pupils also reflected on
their online responsibilities, considering how
the way they act online can affect their own
and other people’s online experiences.
For the first time this year we extended an
invitation to our Primary Schools to bring their
Year 5 pupils to visit us for a morning to
receive expert training on E Safety: this was
a great success and enjoyed by the over 400
pupils who attended.
Website Information
If you would like information on E-Safety for
yourself or your son/daughter please visit our
Academy Website and click on the E-safety
button on the home page:
There you will find useful information, further
Websites to visit, informative films, booklets,
resources from the Parents’ Evening, etc.
If you have any further questions on this very
important subject please contact Mr Mark
Williams, Assistant Principal and Safeguarding
Officer at Borough Road Centre.

where their exam is then please come to the
Exams Office during break or lunchtime.
Examination Equipment
Students should come to exams suitably
prepared. They must have 2 BLACK pens (blue
pens are not allowed), pencil, eraser and ruler.
In addition for Maths exams they will need a
compass, protractor and scientific calculator.
This should be in a clear pencil case or clear
plastic bag. Basic Exam Packs are available to
buy from Resources at £1 each. The Maths
Faculty are selling calculators for £6 each;
please see Mr Spark.

Certificates from all exams taken during the
Summer 2012 are still available from the Exams
Office. If a student is unable to come in then a
parent/carer/friend can collect them with a letter
of authorisation and ID. All certificates have to
be signed out as proof of collection. It is vital
that certificates are collected otherwise they will
be destroyed and you will have no proof of your
qualifications. Please remind any past students
that we still have some certificates dating back
to 2007 which will soon be destroyed.

Year 7 to build Bottle
House!
Paignton Zoo has agreed for Paignton Academy
students to have a plot or an area in the Zoo to
showcase an exhibition on sustainability and
extinction, which will take place on the 17th and
the 24th May, 2013.
Paignton Academy will include art work, written
work, 3D work, sounds, taste and / or
smells. The G Band will look at things like
sustainable energy and make models of
products that people can use at home to save
energy.
7G1, with the help of Mr McKenna and Mr
Camp, will make a greenhouse out of 2 litre,
fizzy drink bottles. The students will use,
approximately 1,500 bottles, to build the entire
greenhouse, so the Academy needs help
by everyone bringing in 2 litre bottles!

NatWest Enterprise
Challenge
On Thursday 21st March over 100 enterprising
Year 8 students took part in the “We’re in Busi-
ness” Finance Challenge. NatWest staff were
on hand to advise and support the students.
Having so many finance experts willing to give
up their time made this year’s event the most
successful to date.
The teams were challenged to set up a catering
company and tender for a meal and
entertainment for 100 guests. Our Year 8
students showed skill at understanding costs,
prices and profit, calculating a budget, thinking
of creative solutions, working to deadlines and
presenting their ideas with lots of humour to a
panel of judges.
The winners “Class Caterers”, worked well as a
team throughout the day and won the contract.
All of the Year 8 students who took part in the
challenge were brilliant: a real credit to
themselves and the Academy.

A tightly contested affair ended in a 1-1
stalemate, which included a dramatic last-gasp
equaliser for the hosts.
An enjoyable evening was had by all and with
some luck and hard work, we hope to see some
PCSA pupils donning the famous 3 lions in the
near future!
Paignton’s Gymnastics, Trampolining and
Cheerleading Squad
What a fabulous performance by Paignton
Community & Sports Academy’s Gymnastics,
Trampolining and Cheerleading squad at the
South Devon Schools Competition! The girls not
only looked the part, but also performed with
expertise and excellence to steal the show by
achieving the Gymnastics and Cheerleading
titles, third place for Trampolining and winning
the overall Team Gold!
Outstanding individual performances saw Charlie
and Imogen Plumridge, and Olivia Dean and
Emily Philbin take joint Gold for the Pairs Sports
Acro Gymnastics competition. Beth Norman won
Trampolining Gold for Year 9 Girls, whilst
Georgia Lea won overall Gold for her immaculate
performance. Jess Sanders-Wyatt won
Trampolining Silver and Newcomer to the Sport
and Emily Shepherd produced an exceptional 4th
place in her category.
The highlight of the day was the culmination of
gymnasts and trampolinists, who were given the
ominous ‘on the day’ task of choreographing and
performing a team Cheerleading routine.
Remaining cool and focussed, the girls delivered
a stunning performance to take Cheerleading
Gold and the Overall School Title. Thanks to
Captain Beth Norman for her calming influence
and team management skills.
Congratulations to the PCSA Squad:
Beth Norman (Captain), Olivia Dean, Georgia
Lea, Ella Pegg, Emily Philbin, Imogen Plumridge
And Charlie Plumridge

Paignton Host first ever Inspiration Games!
On 27th February 2013 Paignton Community and
Sports Academy reached another important
sporting landmark in the Academy’s history by
hosting the first ever Inspiration Series Primary
Festival. Over 100 young people came together
to take part in the event, which included
students from Curledge Street Academy, Kings
Ash Academy and Paignton’s very own Year 9
Sports Leadership team.
The event started with an incredible stunt show
performed by British trial biking champion Andrei
Burton and his team of extreme cyclists.
After the thrilling show the pupils were led by
the Academy’s finest Year 9 Sports Leaders to
various sporting facilities, to experience a range
of sports in mixed groups.
The event was a roaring success and the primary
students and young leaders are already excited
and preparing for the next event!
Jones takes big strides towards becoming Top
Level Referee!
Callum Jones of Year 8 has shown huge potential
in recent weeks by volunteering to referee both
Year 7 and primary school fixtures here at PCSA.
Callum has been earning rave reviews for his
well-disciplined and fair approach to officiating.
His most recent displays have seen him star in
games between local primary schools, Sacred
Heart and Curledge Street Academy, as well as
performances at the Year 7 Football Club and
Year 7 friendly fixtures.
At such a young age, the experience he is
already gaining will no doubt propel him towards
being one of the finest young talents in football
officiating to emerge from the Torbay area.
PCSA Runners Impress at the Devon Schools Cross Country Championships
On Saturday 19th January Academy pupils: Georgina
Lea, Sam Woodcock (Year 7), Owen Coldwell (Year
8), Scott Robinson (Year 9) and Alison Northcott
(Year 11) represented Torbay in the Devon Schools
Cross Country Championships held at Central Park in
Plymouth.
Despite very cold conditions and competing against
the county’s best young runners, our academy
athletes produced some impressive results with the
highlights being Scott and Owen finishing 12th and
18th (out of 70) respectively in the 3km boys junior
race.

On Tuesday 21st Janu-
ary, star striker Jamie
Robinson was ‘Man of
the Match’ for the
second game running,
smashing a hat-trick
as the in-form Year 8
Football Team cruised
to an 8-0 victory over
Dartmouth in the first
round of the South
Devon Cup.
The lads now advance to the next round and,
with some more training sessions in the bank,
they will certainly be ready to keep their dream
of Cup success alive.
SMSC Olympics for Year 7 students
As part of Fabulous Fridays, the whole of Year 7
took to the PE Department for Olympic themed
workshops, designed to test and improve their
knowledge and understanding of the Spiritual,
Moral, Social and Cultural aspects of sport and
society.
The workshops consisted of some highly
competitive team, individual and problem solving
activities that were thoroughly enjoyed by the
students.
Overall the understanding of SMSC across Year 7
was improved as a result of the event and the
Year 7 students left having thoroughly enjoyed
the activities.
Mayfield School catches Six Nations Fever!
Paignton Academy’s Young Ambassadors; Linnea
Byrne, Callum Bavister, Ali Northcott and
Rebecca Bainbridge all visited Mayfield School on
Thursday 7th March to deliver the first of six Tag
Rugby sessions. The sessions have been set up
by the Young Ambassadors to help develop the
rugby skills of students at Mayfield School and
give them a taste of the Six Nations fever that
has been sweeping the country.
The first session went superbly! The feedback
from students was extremely positive and with
the demand for more sessions to come,
Paignton’s Young Ambassadors have a busy
schedule of rugby coaching ahead of them!
Paignton start Primary Football Craze!
The new Primary Football Club taking place on a
Monday night has seen staff and young leaders
teach young budding footballers from Curledge
Street Academy, Sacred Heart Primary and Kings
Ash Academy new skills and helped to develop
their footballing ability.
With over 90 students recorded as the highest
attendance so far, it is a huge success for local
primary students who have been giving rave
reviews about the club. With the skills and
attractive football on show each week there is
every chance we could see the next David
Beckham or Kelly Smith emerge from the
Paignton area in the not too distant future!

Sports Literacy Project Visits Palm FM
On Thursday 14th February, the Sky Sports Lit-
eracy Pupils from Year 9 finished off their pro-
ject in fine style by paying a visit to local radio
station; Palm FM.
The group were shown around by Head of News,
Corrina Hunt and were even allowed to gate-
crash DJ Colin Leslie's studio to watch as he
broadcast his daytime show live across
Torbay.
After discussing the importance of developing
their key literacy skills with some more of the
station's presenters, the pupils then recorded
several 'vox-pop' style interview clips describing
their personal project experiences. These clips
were later edited and included as part of the top
local news story about the project during each
Palm FM news bulletin the following Saturday.
Our thanks go to Corrina and all of the staff at
Palm FM for providing us with such an interesting
insight into the skills required to run a successful
radio station and for making the Sky Sports
Literacy project the talk of Torbay!
Year 10s secure place in next round of Devon Cup with Convincing Win
The Year 10 Football squad ran out 5-0 winners over Stoke Dameral Community College which sees
them progress through to the next round of the Devon cup.
Fifteen minutes in, Owen Mosely kept a cool head to slot the ball past the stranded keeper, which
was quickly followed by another goal from captain Kieran Parkin via an inch perfect cross from
Kingsley Burrows.
Stoke Dameral did threaten on the break, but
again they found Jordan Hoskins, Jack Appleby-
Edwards and Josh Jowsey in terrific form, sniff-
ing out any chance of a goal scoring
opportunity. Utility player Sam Ballie once
again showed his outstanding ability to adapt
into playing any position with a confident
display in the home goal. The second half saw
Paignton really dominate the game with further
goals from Ciannon Breen and a rocket from
Owen Scott.
But the best was saved for last when Jack
Appleby-Edwards burst into the box to execute
a side bicycle kick, which Emile Heskey himself
would be proud of. Congratulations to all of the
squad.

Did you know that just registering your son or
daughter for Free School Meals means that the Academy gets extra money?
Register now to make sure we don’t all miss out!!
The Government is giving money to schools to help children from lower income families do their
very best. This funding is called a ‘Pupil Premium’. For every student registered the Academy gets
£900 this year.
If you are registered for Free School Meals you could also get help with costs of Out of School
Activities and Clubs, Activities Week and the Academy’s Holiday Programme.
Please register to make sure your son or daughter and others in their class don’t miss
out.
How Does it work?
1. First, check if you qualify – it is not just if you are unemployed, so please look at the list
below.
2. Registering is really quick and easy – if you think you qualify, contact the Academy for an
application form.
3. If you want your child to have a free, healthy meal at lunchtime that’s great – they will get the
free meal (saving you more that £350 a year), extra benefits and the school gets £600 extra.
4. If you don’t want your child to have the school meals they can continue as normal – as long as
you qualify and are registered, the school still gets £600 extra.
Do you Qualify?
You can register your child for Free School Meals if you get any of these benefits:
No one will know you have registered and it will not affect any other benefits you are
claiming.
Please talk to us about registering your child today.
Pupils can also register for Free School Meals if they get any of these benefits in their own right.
