Topic
This week, our theme has been
Kings and Queens. We have
looked at kings and queens,
both past and present. We
discussed what they do and
what they wear. We found out
that they live in palaces and in
castles. We had lots of fun
learning how to walk regally.
We made crowns using fantastic gems, which
looked just like real ones and then had a go at
writing our names using the
quills that we
had made out
of a straw and
feathers.
Numeracy This week we have been thinking
about what we can do with shapes.
We talked about the properties of
2D shapes; how some have four
sides and others have three. We
also counted how many corners
they each had and which ones
have points? We discussed using
shapes to construct, like using the
wooden building blocks, which are
3D shapes, to build a castle.
We also played a game using a
computer program
of shapes to build a
climbing frame. We
then went out to
see which shapes
we could find on
our climbing frame.

Literacy Our focussed book this week has been Alice in
Wonderland. As well as enjoying the story, we
discussed what Alice did. We asked; ‘Is it a
good idea to eat and drink things we are not
sure of?’ and ‘Is it a good idea to follow
strangers? We decided that the answer was
'No!’. We then made some character head-
bands and wore them when
we were out in the garden to
act out the Queen and Alice
playing lawn croquet.
In Phonics, we recapped the
sounds learned so far and introduced the
sounds t and i. We had fun when we used our
gross motor movements to form these letter
sounds in the air.

Name: ___________________________
Numeracy Activity:
Use clip below, on the properties of shapes, with your child.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-I0beQHSM8
Look at the shapes below with your child:
How many sides has each shape got?
Have they got corners or points and how many?
Which one is their favourite one and why?
We’ve also added a tricky one
(star), can you tell how many sides
there are and how many points it
has?
Talk Homework:
Review the picture you received last week for ‘Talk Homework’ for the topic
“Let’s Pretend” ...
‘Can you see the King and the Queen in the picture? Lets talk about them’ (please write
your child’s responses on the reverse of this page).
Questions to ask your child:
Do you think they are a real king and queen or are they pretending? Why do you
think this?
They have really lovely costumes. What colours are they?
If you were a king or queen what colour costume would you have? Why?
Can you see the castle? How many towers and flags does it have?
Would you like to live in a castle? Who would live in the castle with you?
What did your child enjoy?
What does your child need more practice doing?
Remember: You should be guided by the pace at which your child wants to go.
If interest is being lost, leave the activities for a while and then come back to them later.
Do remember to give lots of praise and encouragement.
