Welcome to another issue of theHammar News. This issue ischock-full of articles and storieswhich we think you will findinteresting.

We’ve always prided ourselvesof our world-beating technology.And, this year, we are happy toannounce a home-growndevelopment, the electricalsideloader. We’re so excitedabout this Australian inventionthat we’ve placed it on our frontcover and give you the story onpage three.

You will note that a little Aussieinnovation can have reverber-ations worldwide. You have towonder, why no one has thoughtof this before. Considering themany benefits, it couldn’t havecome any sooner.

We feature two stories from ourcustomers who are happy withtheir Hammar experience. ElfMushrooms and MT Movers liketheir Hammar sideloaders andlet you know about how they

came about using oursideloaders. And, moreimportantly how the use of ourproducts have helped them intheir work.

I know that we’re biased, butthey make interesting reading.You may find yourself in asimilar situation, so don’thesitate to discuss your needs,to allow us to come up with asolution that will help you getyour work done.

Since our last newsletter, weintroduced the 155HS Megatransfer. A solution forapplications that requiresuperior stability and can benefitfrom the wide and high tunnelfor moving a trailer through—you get flexibility plus. And,most importantly, you can usethe stabiliser on the front, rearor both cranes.

Plus, you can place thesideloader flat onto trailer toassist in the lifting. It’s worthhaving a read.

There are ahost ofotherarticlesthat makeinterestingreading.We alsocover theRig Liftersolution which we introduced afew years ago. Now well andtruly proven in the field, wethought we might cover thissolution again.

Finally, I thought that I mightintroduce the new members ofour team, as well as announcethe new Hammar Service officein WA. We’re growing slowlyand it’s good to place faces tonames, so you know who arespeaking with on the phone.

Sometimes the obvious takes a while to make itselfknown. Then, an eureka moment and it’s right in frontof you. This is what happened to our team atHammar Australia.

The current state of play for sideloaders has been theuse of hydraulics powered by a diesel power pack orthe truck’s PTO to move the sideloader. Why not usean electric motor instead?

So, we set about to develop an electric motor to drivethe sideloader. Why use an electric motor? Well,there are a number of reasons, but here are the moreimportant ones.

First of all, when you think about it the functional(operational) cycle time for a sideloader is only aboutone hour per day. That allows for up to say 16movements. Think about it, at three to four minuteseach time, that only comes to 60 minutes.

Unlike engine-driven sideloaders, when thesideloader is not working, an electric motor shutsdown.

With an electric motor driven sideloader, the usergets lower noise levels. With increased urban density,noise pollution can be a problem. Tick that problem

as gone, with our electric sideloader.

And, the user gets a lighter unit. This means greaterpayload capacity and savings in use of fuel. Not onlythat, as there is less fuel, there is also less pollution.So, one gets a greener alternative.

Additionally, the user gets lower cost through the lifeof a sideloader. Admittedly, there is a slight premiumto purchasing the new electric alternative. But, withlower operational cost, greater payload and lower fuelcosts, the small premium is paid for in only a fewyears.

Mind you as more electric units come on-stream, weexpect the premium (approximately 10%) will drop inthe coming years.

And, in line with our customisation policy, the userwill have the choice of mains-charging batteries,primemover charging or even generator charging.

It’s an exciting development for us at HammarAustralia, with the release of the electric motorsideloader which will be premiered during theBrisbane Truck Show. And, we look forward tosharing this with our Hammar branches around theworld.

Quad axles from Hammar help increase

Rob and Norah Tolson began growing mushrooms in1961, with a yearly production of 28,000 kg annually.Once their sons, Roger, Kevin and David, finishedschool, they migrated back to the family farm to honetheir mushroom growing skills before going off on theirown.

Today, collectively, the brothers produce and sell around11,000,000 kg a year of white mushroooms, rangingfrom the small button to the big jumbo flat variety, all fordomestic consumption. Most of the production is sold tothe Australian East Coast-based supermarket chains,wholesalers and a selectednumber of agents.

It’s a thriving concernconsisting of one hectare ofinsulated undercovergrowing area based atVineyard in New SouthWales employeeing 130workers—a job David saysis extremely satisfying.

In the process of examininghis overheads David hasrecently moved to a quadaxle, Hammar-built side-lifter developed to more cost efficiently handle theongoing supply of peat required for the growing process.

Elf Mushrooms import over 350 containers of the ‘deep-dug’ black peat each year, so it’s important that thisfunction is carried out both safely and economically.

He explains that “using the Hammar quad axle concept, we expect to increase the number of bags of peat in acontainer by five to 10%—without adding an extra centin transport costs as adding the fourth axle now allowsus to carry a 20’ container with a payload of over 30tonnes. On arrival at our farm, the container is swungand placed into position for the offloading of the 1,000

bags of peat contained ineach container. We unloadthe container using a forkliftwith ‘push-pull’ attachment.

David elected to have thesideloader fitted with BPWdisc-braked axles, an airbagsuspension and the BPW,EBS module featuring theanti-roll function. It’s apackage that David says is ano brainer!

which give Elf Mushroom the abilityto drive the rig safely and effort-lessly while not increasing pavementwear along the route.

Without the implementation of theNTC Quad Axle Blueprint design forthe quad axle sideloader, Hammarwas able to meet all ourrequirements which involved a lot ofmodifications, such as theconstruction of a low profile chassisdeign to meet the 1.4 m twist lockheight.

“Our choice togo with Hammarand BPW wasalso madeeasier becauseboth suppliershave a greatreputation todeliver thegoods andservice backupneeded to keepour seven day aweek, 24 hour aday operationhappening,” concludes David.

Since our lastnewsletter, we’ve hadtwo additions to theteam. They are MarkFitzgerald, who runsthe day-to-day needsof our office andBrendan Biasi, wholooks afterSoutheasternAustralia sales.

Mark joined us in2010 and Brendan in2012.

General Manager. Grahame started with us in1998.

Starting as SalesManager forSoutheasternAustralia and thePacific, he now looksafter NortherAustralia and Pacificarea sales and isresponsible for theday-to-day running ofHammar Australia.

Peter Levison hasalso had his roleexpanded. Hecontinues asManaging Director ofHammar Australia,but is now alsoresponsible formanaging Hammar’sexpansion inSoutheast Asia.

What started off with acouple of mates andtheir trucks forming apartnership in a roadtransport business hasblossomed into one ofAustralia’s unique andhighly viable containermovement services.

MT Movers, owned andmanaged by AlanEriandsen and RayBabarovich, specialise intransporting 20’ and 40’shipping and railcontainers within theBrisbane metropolitanarea and throughoutthe central and southeast Queenslandregion, with services“on demand” into otherstates. The unusualaspect of their businessis that the majority ofthe services undertakeninvolve the movement of

empty containers, hencethe ‘MT’ (translating to‘empty’) capitals within thecorporate name.

Clients range fromcontainer sales yards,transport companies thatconduct wharf work, therail industry and for thecommercial and domesticbuilding and removalistssectors.

Alan notes, “we are bothbig fans of the Hammarproduced sideloadersbecause you can’t beat theperformance of their gearor the personalised servicebackup that’s offered. Infact, we are the world’slargest user of the HammarML – 12 tonne side loadertrailers. We alsoincorporate the use ofHammar sidelifters.”

We, at Hammar, pride ourselves of the world-leadingtechnology that we use in the production of oursideloaders. We can also lay a claim to our innovativeapproach to solving the needs of our customers allover the world.

Designed specifically for use in the Pacific islands,Africa and other developing countries is theHammar 195Tsideloader. In this region,20’ containers is the norm, with 40’ unitsbeing the occasional exception.

The T suffix in the sideloader name stands

for telescopic chassis. And, that’s just what makesthese sideloader chassis different. They easily extendfor use with 40’ containers. And, as 20’ container-ready, these units are very compact and highlymanoeuvrable. They’re ideal for use where thiscompactness is desirable.

While these sideloaders are currently used in thePacific, please note that these sideloaders are notsuitable for Australian use.

After only a few yeas since its release, the Hammar155 HS sideloader has had very good acceptancelocally. This stabiliser made a big splash in the 2011Brisbane Truck Show, which was attended by Bengt-Olof Hammar, who helped the local team man theHammar booth.

The rationale behind the 155 HS is to provide superiorstability, while maintaining low ground pressure.Characterised by the Hammar Mega Transfer that lookslike an “h”, the stabiliser has a wide and high tunnel,when extended. The tunnel allows the companionoperator to drive through and reverse during transfer.

The stabiliser especially provides the versatility ofallowing the operator touse the stabiliser in otherways, as well. This doesn’tjust go over the top of acompanion trailer duringtransfer, but can also beleft on top of the trailerwhen transfering.

Folded over, the stabilisercan be made to sit flat ona companion trailer, whichis ideal for transfers wherethere is not enough roomfor extension theincreased width.

Part of the150 Series,our mostheavy dutyand alsothe mostimitatedsideloaderin theworld. Thisrange isalso theone thatprovidesusers the most customisation options of all the

It’s not every day that one can brag about setting aworld record. And, to be listed in the GuinnessWorld Record Book.

But we made it into that prestigious book on 27June, 2012.

Witnessed by the press, a TV team and of course,the entire staff at Hammar Olsfors, Sweden the

record was for the successful lifting of a containerweighing 60 tonnes using a standard Hammar 157Hsideloader.

Carrying that weight has meant that we are the onlysideloader manufacturer to achive this. And, wehave the certificate to prove it.

Hammar makes lifting easier in oil andgas drill rigs

Out in the bush, especially in applications like oil andgas drill rigs, a sideloader is an ideal alternative tothe need to call in a crane to move and load heavyequipment. We proven through the years thatHammar sidelifters can easily handle 20', 40', 45’,48’ containers or 2 x 20' containers and flats easilyfrom the ground,trailers, trucksand railwaywagons.

So why not usethe sametechnology, touse sidelaoder tohandle oil fielddrill rigs? Right?

In fact, this isnow reality. Withthe ability tohandle 14’ to 58'oil field drill rig,using approvedlifting points orbollards in the ends and also smaller loads withuses of a lifting beam.

After all the sideloader is a crane and can do what acrane is supposed to.

The Hammar sideloader can lift mast and other

pieces that arelonger than 58’, or

those with lifitng points inside the ends.

In addition to the stabilising legs, Hammarsideloaders have two extra full hydraulic support

legs on the non-loading side tostabilise indouble-stackingapplications orduring windyconditions.

This means windyconditions up to50 km/h.Hammarsideloadersprovide the abilityto use fibre slings,depending onliftingrequirements.

It’s important ot note that using Hammar sideloadersdoes away with the need to hire mobile cranes andrig trucks. A Hammar sideloader on a truck meansthat this can be towed on the road, while carrying aload itself. A typical sideloader, the Hammar 151 C

Today, this Hammar solution gives the user moreflexibility, whilst cutting costs previously associatedwith rig lifting in field oil and gas fields.

Hammar Service opensWA branch to betterservice the west

Established in 2005, Hammar Service, a wholly-ownedsubsidiary of Hammar Australia, set up in the Brisbanesuburb of Lytton. The branch/service centre was setupto look after the servicing of Hammar sideloadersAustralia-wide, through a national network of specially-appointed service providers.

Following the success of the concept, and taking intoconsideration the isolation of Perth from the theeastern states, we took the strategic decision to open

a branch there. This is a marked difference to ourcompetitors, who only have a limited presence at theservice level.

Hammar’s WA branch opened in 2012 is a dedicatedservice/manufacturing centre with parts andproduction stock being delivered directly from thecompany’s head office in Sweden. With manufacturingbased in WA, lead times will greatly improve for localdelivery.
