The most important is the one who produces
.
Packaging is one of the most topical issues of today. Irrespective of
the subject, since nowadays packaging is everywhere. But it is much
more important for the food and beverage industries and not from
ecological point of view only. Food and beverage packaging is not
just a vision and attraction of consumers – it is essential for preserving
the product, its quality and shelf life as long as possible. And here we
should raise the question for plastic packaging in the context of
environmental requirements. While it can be replaced by another
material in some industries, there are, and not a few productions,
which cannot operate without the various types of polymeric
materials packaging. Nowadays, meat and milk processors use these
films as a basic material for storing, transportation and offering the
product in the stores either in vacuum or modified atmosphere. And
until some twenty years ago the various flexible packaging were
mainly imported, Bulgaria has its own production today, which is not
inferior in quality. That is why we gladly accepted the INTRAMA
Managing owner’s invitation to get acquainted with the production
and talk about the condition and perspectives for such packaging.
Moreover, the company participates in the global UN initiative „Save food“,
which is a reflection of the management’s commitment to preserve food and
reduce losses during storage.

I would not say we are the most advanced in the world but I would claim we have the best equipment and packaging for the markets we operate in. Of course, there is even more sophisticated packaging for special foods. The technology of producing such packaging itself has advanced a lot. Therefore, we are proud of our technology and the laboratory we have. But it has progressed much in the world. Thence the question “Where does poor packaging come from?” is logical. There are many large industries in the world, where inferior production is just a technological result. Until it enters into a normal rhythm, a high-performance installation does not produce the best quality film at the beginning. That is how large quantities of non-standard production are being realized. But there are traders around the world who resell it and, unfortunately, customers who buy it. It is a pity, but sometimes there are producers as well – meat and milk processors – who know such a film is of a poor quality and they still buy it since it is cheaper. They do not take into account it compromises the packaging and respectively – it may also compromise the quality of the product inside, and hence – the company reputation.
I am a little stubborn. My dream has long been we produce the films and not just import and provide service. And so, I have achieved my dream – we have started to produce. – Mr. Boshilow does not conceal his pride.
There is something else as well. The present-day packaging requirements from an ecological point of view are very high. That is why we, I mean the producers of packaging in Europe and the world, try to use as little material as possible while achieving the same and even better packaging quality. For example, our films are thinner but they do a better job. In other words,, we useless material and fewer natural resources for producing better quality films. But local producers are used to thicker film. For example, 120 and 90 µm may be thick enough but they are looking for a thicker one – 150 µm. Not to mention the occasions when poor quality packaging, which is neither appropriate for the specific product, is being used.
Right here, Stoyan Ivanov, Marketing specialist
at INTRAMA, intervenes: Still, the stereotype that
the thicker packaging is the healthier one is
strongly imposed on the Bulgarian market. We
have been trying to change this attitude
among the producers of food products and
convince them they can use a thinner
packaging, which will protect the product if not
better, at least in the same way as the thicker
one. We attempt to give publicity to the fact it
is a good thing to pay attention to the
packaging quality, moreover the producers
themselves are interested in that. They have
invested in the production of a certain product,
which cannot have the necessary shelf life if
packaging is not qualitative.
As a good host, Mr. Alexander
Boshilow, founder and managing
owner of INTRAMA, showed us the
new production facility near Plovdiv,
which impresses with its technology,
orderliness and full compliance with
the technology requirements in the
production of flexible packaging.
When we talked about the
packaging in the Bulgarian food
industry, Mr. Boshilow shared his
concerns about
practicescompromising them due to
the usage of poor quality or
inappropriate packaging materials
for the particular product.

An illustration
What are the major market practices which pose risks to the packaging? – I ask Mr. Ivanov.
Let us take, for example, the modified-atmosphere packaging. First, high-barrier trays and films should be used so that the packaging is qualitative and performs its function. We have come upon films from packaging on the market with polyethylene / polyester composition. Polyethylene has a barrier to moisture and polyester gives mores strength and gloss for a better appearance. I have no idea whether the producer has bought the film as a high-barrier one but it is an inappropriate packaging in this case, even of poor quality for this type of packaging because such a film structure does not protect the product.
I can give another example with the bottom films – they take the product shape and are made of polyamide /
polyethylene. According to the world standard, under the requirements of the Good manufacturing practice, these films should contain polyamide at about 25-30% of the total thickness. This material is more expensive but it provides a gas barrier to the packaging. Unfortunately, on the market there is wicked practice and films with reduced gas barrier i.e. less polyamide are offered. If we assume a film is 200µ with 20µ polyamide, i.e. 10% only, the film gets thinner after thermoforming and it gets even thinner at the corners of the lower part of the package. This example shows that only 4µ polyamide is left after thermoforming. In this case with only 10% polyamide, there is no gas barrier. And when a food producer buys it, there is no way he can checks how much the polyamide in the film is and he unintentionally risks the quality of his products. Usually, it is a matter of 0.01 BGN per package but a lot of funds invested in the product are put at risk.
The use of recycled material in the packaging is one
of the practices on the Bulgarian market. Most
probably, such packaging is cheaper, but it is good
the food producer, no matter whether he is big a
small, realize by himself that packaging is not a
bothersome expense for his production but a strong
instrument for achieving the goal of delivering better
products to the market. Buying a package with
recycled material will not save him millions but a
small amount. And yet, that may cost him much
more.
How do you think the problem with poor packaging
can be mastered? – I address Mr.Boshilow again.
All of us, along the chain, should ask more from ourselves. That, in my opinion, takes time and the controlling government bodies should be very strict so offenders should not be allowed to keep the wicked practices. As we have requirement to the product we should also have even higher requirement to the packaging. I’d even say packaging is more important because it can sell the product but also ruin it

Apart from some of the biggest food producers,
almost all the retail chains are your customers.
Can they also control the product packaging
they receive?
Their control is expressed in the return of the
packaging. According to me, they should audit
the packaging producers and exercise control
this way. Producers also come to audit us but this
is still quite rare.
Besides, we have 11 regional offices in the
country, consisting of an INTRAMA regional
manager and, depending on the area size, of at
least two technicians. The farthest producer is no
more than 30km. away from us, which is an
expression of our willingness to be close to the
customer. We strive to understand the specifics of
his product and offer him the most appropriate
packaging. We always experiment by making a
few packaging and test them to see which one is
the best for the customer
At the laboratory
We can control the physical properties plus the film composition – as materials, input percentage and layer distribution. Afterwards, the mechanical test gives us clues how to change some of the recipes so that we have the best possible performance for our customers – eng.Stanimir Videv, Head of the laboratory, praises. We use our researches to control the business performance and the product quality, as well as for development activities.
The 18-layer white film 200 µ for cheese packaging can be stretched up to six times, which is an indication of its elasticity and high quality.
All this requires experience – to know the material and
be acquainted with the customers’ problems. The
experience we have also helps us a lot – our people
are permanently trained by suppliers of machines and
films, they get acquainted with the latest trends in our
field.
And yet, what needs to be done to have a really
effective control and less poor packaging?
As a result of my long production experience, I have
come to a conclusion valid for all industries – the one
who produces is the most important. Control should
start here, from us. That is why there are good
practices, standardizations, BDS, ISO and others. These
rules must be observed – by the machine operator, the
technologist, all of us. And yet, something may slip
away. So, everything depends on man, on the whole
society.

INTRAMA has presented a report on barrier
packaging safety and ecology
INTRAMA participated in the scientific-practical
conference on subject: “Trends in food and
beverages packaging – technologies, materials,
ecology and regulatory framework”.
The event was held on October 16th, organized by
the Food-Processing Industry Cooperation jointly with
the Branch Chamber of Pulp and Paper Industry.
Nikolay Kanchev, Deputy Minister of Environment and
Waters, representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture,
Food and Forestry and the Bulgarian Industrial
Chamber were special guests at the conference.
The conference was also attended by
representatives of the state administration and the
competent authorities, businesses, scientific and
academic circles, professional and branch
organisations and other stakeholders.
Stoyan Ivanov, Marketing specialist, presented a
report, which covered the following topics:
- The essential contribution of barrier
packaging to reducing food waste;
- The more ecologic, solid and safe barrier
packaging produced by INTRAMA in line with
the global trends in the reduction of plastic
waste;
- Results from mechanical tests at the INTRAMA
laboratory, which refute the stereotype that
thicker packaging is stronger;
- The process, introduced to INTRAMA, to
ensure the safety of the barrier packaging
produced.
Lastly, the report appealed to increasing the control
over the barrier packaging safety throughout the
chain and alerted to the presence of multi-layer
barrier packaging of recycled material on the
Bulgarian market, indicating why that was a problem.
