EVERY DAY COUNTS

We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day on time. Missing school can have a major impact on a child’s future – a student missing one day a fortnight will miss four full weeks by the end of the year. By Year 10 they will have missed more than a year of school. There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes. Coming to school every day is vital, but if for any reason your child must miss school, there are things we can do together to ensure they don’t fall behind:

Speak with your classroom teacher and find out what work your child needs to do to keep up.

Develop an absence learning plan with your teacher and ensure your child completes the plan.

Most days start with Literacy or Numeracy; when your child is late they are missing out on this important learning time. Remember, every day and hour counts. If your child must miss school, speak with your classroom teacher as early as possible.

News from the Assistant Principal By Jan Smith

CAN YOU HELP?

Through our Ride2School Program and commitment to promoting active travel, Chelsea Primary is recognised as a ‘Gold’ level school…….however we have grown out of our current bike shed!

Our plans are to now explore possibilities of either expanding our current space, or relocating a larger storage facility to not only house our growing amount of bikes and scooters, but also ensure our students and families cross at safe points around the school perimeter.

In order to access grants and government funding we would love some assistance in quoting a structure. If you are able to help us out please leave your name at the office. Much appreciated.

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE DAYS FOR TEACHERS In our Victorian Education State, we achieve excellence by consistently focusing on improving the achievements of learners across Victoria, whether it is through improving the quality of educational services or changing the way we teach. The most important thing we can do to improve student outcomes is to develop and improve the skills of our teachers. To ensure we support the learning and development of not only our students, we are committed to providing professional development opportunities for our teachers. Teachers now spend four days per year further developing their skills in areas that are aligned to the school priorities. Students will directly benefit from these improvements in their daily learning. These professional practice days are an opportunity for teachers to work collaboratively to improve their teaching practice. The days will be scheduled ahead of time to ensure there is minimal impact and there is a learning plan in place to ensure education continues as usual in the classroom. This term our staff have targeted curriculum planning with a focus on differentiation and support of our Term 2 Inquiry focus of Sustainability.

RIDE TO SCHOOL DAY –A FABULOUS EVENT!

Woo hoo, what a fabulous day we all had last Friday, celebrating Ride 2 School Day. Seventy five percent of our students walked, rode and scooted to school and enjoyed a delicious healthy breakfast of yoghurt and fruit. Thank you to everyone who came along and shared the fun and to our students and staff who helped set up and serve! Thank you also to Michelle Galileos and Kingston Council for supporting our breakfast.

NEW POLICY-PARENT CODE OF CONDUCT

Our school policies are developed by School Council in consultation with the staff and school community.

As a Victorian Government school, we adhere to the policies and guidelines as described in the Department of Education and Training website. Our newest policy ratified at School Council this week is the Parent Code of Conduct. The policy outlines the expectations of all community members and visitors when interacting in person, via email, on social media, privately and publicly with other parents, our staff and students. This is available on our school website.

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Chelsea Primary School is excited to be participating.

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 6 September 2019.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Chil-dren from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books. All children who meet the Challenge will receive a cer-tificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.

To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklists and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc

Chelsea Primary School has enjoyed an almost 100% participation rate over the last few years so lets keep up the tradition. Please check for login details in your child’s schoolbag this week and start logging those books!

The annual CSEF amount per Student is $125 for primary school students. For more information about the CSEF visit www.education.vic.gov.au/csef HOW TO APPLY New applicants should contact the school office to obtain a CESF application form or download from www.education.vic.gov.au/csef If you applied for the CSEF at your child’s school in 2018 you do not need to compete an application form in 2019 unless there has been a change in your family circumstances. Check with the school office if you are unsure.
