Presidential Perspective
This is my last Perspective as President. I would like to thank the Board and all of the
Club members who contributed to the success of the club during my tenure. By now,
you know that as of January 1st, Mark Hodges will be your new leader, Diane Bauman
will replace Bob Proctor as 1st Vice President and activities chair, and Dave Putnam has
been added to the Board to complete Connie Noble’s term. All other Board members
and functional chairs will remain in place.
The election luncheon was a great success. The Silver Gate Yacht Club provided an impressive setting and
the food was excellent. A well done to Jim Hallameyer for setting up this event.
We have two events planned for the first part of 2019. See this issue for details. Diane could use your help
in planning more events.
Unlike some past presidents, I am not leaving town. I’ll still be around to take the blame for things that
may go wrong in the early part of Mark’s term. Thanks again, to all of you who worked hard to make my
job easier.
Please see the Membership Renewal Form in this issue and send Nedra a check or pay via PayPal soon for
your membership renewal. Nedra has to send in renewals to JCNA by January 5th.
See you at the Holiday Party.
Have a Happy Holiday season, may Santa fill your stocking with a year’s supply of top grade motor oil !!!
Cheers, George

International Jaguar Festival Wednesday October 31st through Sunday November 4th
Overview by Mark Hodges
The International Jaguar Festival (IJF) was a festival of events that took place over five days and stretched from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara and beyond. The host hotel was the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort, formerly known as the Fess Parker Inn. The only thing between the resort and the Pacific Ocean was a stretch of sand, a road, and a grassy area they call “The Green”. Members of Jaguar clubs from all across the United States attended. Registration was set up as a menu format where you could pick and choose to attend only the events you wanted. The festival was hosted by the Jaguar Owners Club of Los Angeles with significant help from the San Diego Jaguar Club. A committee was formed about two years ago and I joined them after our 2017 Concours, where I volunteered to chair the Concours d’Elegance. While many people helped by working the different events, there were just a handful of people who actually planned and ran the events. Mark Mayuga was the IJF Chairman and overall planner. Mark was the guy who made this festival happen. Judy Craven and Jim Friel helped him significantly. Jim MacLaughlin was the Slalom Steward, I was the Concours Chairman, and Charlie Hallums was the Concours Chief Judge. I mention these people because the only two JCNA requirements for an IJF was it must have a slalom and it must have a Concours d’Elegance. Everything else could be do-as-you-please. There were a lot of planning meetings, some in person, and some by conference call. We all first met at Mark Mayuga’s house in November of 2017 to make initial plans and map out the festival schedule. After that, we had monthly planning conference calls where we updated the other committee members on our progress and shared ideas. We had a final meeting at Domenic Valvano’s house about three weeks before the festival, where we gave our final reports and finalized the entire festival. Below is a summary of the IJF schedule. Wednesday, October 31: Evening - Peterson Automotive Museum Tour and Dinner; Mid-Wilshire, Los Angeles Thursday, November 1: Morning – Tour Drive to Santa Barbara Afternoon – Slalom at Santa Ynez Airport Evening – Hotel Check-in, Event Registration, and Welcome Reception w/ Slalom Awards Friday, November 2: Morning – Concours d’Elegance ‘On the Green’ Evening – Concours Awards Banquet Saturday, November 3: Morning – Breakfast, and either a Scenic Tour or a Rally Drive Afternoon – BBQ Lunch, and Winery Tour at Rideau Vineyard Evening – Monte Carlo Night Benefit Dinner

The Peterson Automotive Museum and Caravan to Santa Barbara Wednesday October 31st and Thursday November 1st
Article and Photo by Nedra Rummell
After a short walk from our hotel, we kicked off the IJF at the incredible Petersen Auto Museum. The first
100 registered guests were treated to a 75-minute guided tour of the Petersen Vault. The vault is an
amazing 60,000 square feet containing over 250 of the most iconic and rare vehicles, including turn-of-the-
twentieth century cars, head of state cars, supercars, award-winning hot rods and other surprises. Of
course, a favorite was Steve McQueen’s 1956 XKSS. SDJC members were especially happy to see long-time
members, Jay and Ann Stamets, who moved from San Diego to Arroyo Grande a few years ago after Jay
retired. After the tour we enjoyed a delicious dinner at the museum’s Drago restaurant and a panel
discussion presented by Heacock and Easton Insurance.
Thursday morning, we were blessed with beautiful blue skies as a large contingent of Jaguars met at
Gladstone’s Restaurant in Malibu for the Tour to Santa Barbara Caravan. After coffee we all were excited
to begin our drive, but a little frustrated when only three to four Jags in the Caravan could make it through
the light at one time. (I may have been a 4th car through on what could have been a red light). I was hoping
to caravan with new members Brandon Smith-Stephens and Steve Stephens, but the light did not
cooperate. After driving a stunning 11 miles on Pacific Coast Highway, we turned East on Latigo Canyon
Road for almost 20 twisty curvy miles for a scenic drive over the mountains to Mulholland Highway into
Westlake. As we admired the beautiful mountains and views, little did we know that within days, the area
would be dealing with a nightclub shooting and a raging fire with horrific loss of life and property.

Sunday, November 4: Morning – Farewell Breakfast, Hotel Check-out, and Drive Home Many of our SDJC club members attended the festival and some were tasked with writing articles about the
different events they attended. This was done for several reasons. It did not burden one person with writing
about the entire festival, no one attended every event, and you get the info on the different festival events
from more than just one person’s perspective. I hope you enjoy reading what we write because we enjoyed
doing what we did. … Mark Hodges

The JCNA Slalom at Solvang Airport Thursday November 1st
Article by Diane Bauman Photos by Mark Hodges, Diana Hodges and Damon Schnepf (Moss Motors)
I bought my Jaguar F Type to add enjoyment to my life, and I am sure that is the same reason you bought your
cars too. Once I saw the Slalom event was on the calendar at IJF in Santa Barbara, I knew this was something I
could not just watch, I had to drive…. So, I bought the required helmet needed to participate and thought
about how much of a fool I was going to make of myself (since I am a girl that loves racing).
Since this is run on a flat area and the only thing you can hit are orange construction cones, it looked fun.
There is almost no chance of rolling the car, the worst that can happen would be spinning out of control.
Today with the way people in California drive on the freeways that could be a lifesaving skill. I thought of
using my tractor to grade my own track to practice on my yard, but since it is dirt that has some mowed stalks,
it is not somewhere I want to drive my F Type. I will save that for the mini buggy I have. Plus, the investment
of 29 construction cones to set up the track can be a little pricey.
So, with my helmet on, restricted vision, and hopes I didn’t hyperventilate, I lined up in the starting gate for
my run around the track. Luckily for my nerves, I showed up at about the time everybody was leaving so the
amount of people I embarrassed myself in front of was smaller. Now I will admit, since the rules and the
track layout was provided in advance, I studied the direction of travel to run the 3 laps around the track. First
was an hour glass going around cones in the middle for the shape, next lap was a figure 8, and the third lap
was an oval going around the outside. But at each end outside the cones you drove outside of, were 4 or
more cones laying down to mark the furthest area of the track.
On my first lap luckily my car is an automatic, because my knees were shaking and I would not have been able
to shift gears. I had no problem driving the hour glass lap, but while on the figure 8 lap, I made the mistake of
driving on the inside of the cones at the end of the track instead of the outside. I didn’t think it was that big of
a mistake, as I hadn’t hit anything or spun out. The third oval lap I actually started going faster and felt more
comfortable. I slid into the finish gate trying real hard not to hit the guy standing there to stop the timing.
Since I survived that I wanted to try it again.
For my second run, I was charging the cones and sliding around the corners going must faster. At least my
breathing had settled down and I wasn’t fogging up the visor on the helmet. All was good until the figure 8
lap, all of a sudden, the cones were coming up way too fast and sliding around one end I ran over a cone and
got it stuck under the car. The noise of a flattened cone being drug around the track under a low car is
deafening. I stopped so the track person could dislodge it without jacking up my car. I stopped after that
because I was embarrassed and hadn’t seen anybody else do that.
The next car to run was a sedan, and that driver had no clue about the layout of the track or even the correct
direction to drive after leaving the starting gate. He left the track area and drove around and in between the
sheriff’s helicopters further down the airport. The track people tried to walk the course with him and he
didn’t even understand he was to follow him and he drove slower than I walk in my 5-inch heels! But the
biggest surprise was that he won a trophy because he was the only car in his class.
December 2018 11
I think I was robbed of a trophy for killing a cone, but was told someone actually got 4 stuck under his car.
The conclusion: THAT WAS FUN, I CAN’T WAIT TO DO IT AGAIN, AND EVEN THOUGH I AM A GIRL SOMEBODY
KILLED MORE CONES THAN I DID! … Diane Bauman

The Welcome Reception at the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort Thursday Evening November 1st
Recap by Chuck Leuthen, Photos by Dave & Matt Allen
The 2018 International Jaguar Festival was formally kicked off with a Welcome Reception atop the Hilton
Santa Barbara Veranda overlooking incredible views of Santa Barbara’s East Beach, Sterns Wharf and the
Channel Islands off in the distance.
Jaguar enthusiasts came from distant locales to meet and greet others, share libations and appetizers
and listen to introductory welcome remarks from those that went to extraordinary measures to
organize this great event hosted by the Jaguar Owners Club of Los Angeles.
December 2018 14
The awe-inspiring scenery of Santa Barbara was surpassed only by the breathtaking beauty of the many
SDJC members in attendance as can be seen below and throughout this month’s issue. It’s no wonder
that SDJC was presented with the “MACA” Award given to the Most Attractive Club in Attendance. Or so
it been rumored.

The JCNA Concours d’Elegance Friday November 2nd
Article and Photos by Mark Hodges and Dave Allen
The Concours portion of the International Jaguar Festival (IJF) was held Friday, November 1 “On the Green”, a tree-lined grass area between the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort and the beach itself. As Concours chairman I planned and executed the event, not alone, but with lots of help. While the festival itself was put on by the Los Angeles club, the Concours, which is the foundation of an IJF, was put on by the San Diego club.
December 2018 15
I started planning this Concours well over a year ago and used my experience with the SDJC to put on, what I thought was, a pretty good show. Trevor, my oldest son, and I took the train up in August to preview the venue and map out the grounds. He had many good ideas which made my job that much easier. The next task was processing the Concours registrations and planning the event; the work was very similar to planning the San Diego Concours, but on a much larger scale. Instead of just having people from Southern California muck up their registrations, I have people from all over the country muck up their registrations. Devin, my younger son, was my scrutineer, double checking all my work, making sure everything matched. Registration closed two weeks before the Concours, so when I had everything I needed, I started mapping out the grounds, printing windshield placards and score sheets. I sent the list to Jim Hallameyer, who created and printed a great program guide, including an incredible map. When the programs came in, Devin and I put the entrant’s packets together and packaged everything up. Come time for the IJF, it was upward and onward to Santa Barbara. The real physical work started once we arrived at the hotel. The night before the Concours, Diana and I marked the field so our parking crew would know where to put the participant’s cars in the morning. Come Friday morning, it was cold and dark when we started at 6 am, but it warmed up nicely when the sun rose, making for a perfect day. Nedra Rummell, Diane Bauman, and four LA club members helped me get the cars parked. I briefed them and left the actual placement up to them. Diana was my go-to gal and she took care of whatever issues arose, especially when cars wouldn’t fit where planned. We got all the cars on the field well before the 9 a.m. deadline. When I finally looked over the field, I was more than pleased. It looked better than I could have ever imagined. I thank my crew for their excellent work and teamwork. There were over 80 Jaguars entered in the show: 27 from Los Angeles, 15 from San Diego, 5 from Inland Empire, 9 from the rest of California, 3 from Arizona, 2 from Colorado, 1 from Nevada, 1 from Oregon, 1 from British Columbia, 2 from Texas, 1 from Virginia, 1 from South Carolina, and 2 from Florida. There were about a dozen Land Rovers too, bringing the total to about 90 vehicles on the field. 52 Jaguars were judged: 25 Champion, 24 Driven, and 3 Special. 29 Jaguars were put on display and not judged. Who was there from San Diego you ask? Craig Wright and Mary Ann Ward showed their grey 1965 E-Type FHC; Paul and Debby Novak showed their BRG 1990 XJ12 VDP; Allen and Olga Quale showed their Green 1961 Mark 2 Saloon; Will and Maritza Nighswonger showed their platinum 2000 XKR Convertible; Jay and Ann Stamets showed their red 2000 XK8 Coupe; Chuck and Kathy Leuthen showed their blue 2002 XK8 Convertible; Diane Bauman showed her glacier white 2017 F-Type Coupe; Nedra Rummell showed her white 2014 F-Type Convertible; Brian and Lisa Ellis, from the IEJC,showed their alpine green 1999 XJ8 VDP; and Diana and I showed our rhodium silver 2014 XKR Coupe. Tom and Debby Krefetz showed 4 vehicles: a red 1939 SS100, a grey 1963 E-Type, a BRG 1951 XK120 Roadster, and a silicon silver 2018 Range Rover Velar. Our members helped with judging too. Of the 29 judges, 11 were from San Diego. Dave Allen, Dick Cavicke, Brian Ellis, Lisa Ellis, Tom Krefetz, Will Nighswonger, Paul Novak, Dave Putnam, Pete Rieth, Nedra Rummell, and Al Steele. Dick Cavicke and Dave Putnam took the train up Thursday just for the Concours events and then took the train back to San Diego Saturday morning. Talk about dedication.
December 2018 16
Judging finished a little before 3 p.m. With the help of hotel staff, everyone drove from the grounds without incident and were on their own until the awards banquet that evening. Here are the scores for those San Diego club members who entered in a judge division:
Division Name Jaguar Score Place
C-1 Tom & Debby Krefetz 1939 SS 100 99.21 1st
C-5 Craig Wright & Mary Ann Ward 1965 E-Type 99.95 3rd

D-10 Will & Maritza Nighswonger 2000 XKR 9.940 2nd
S-2 Tom Krefetz & Debby 1963 XKE 9.995 2nd
All in all, I was quite pleased with the Concours outcome. While it was a lot of work, it was very rewarding work. My thanks to all who attended, and to everyone who helped with the planning and execution. … Mark

The Awards Banquet Friday November 2nd
Article and Photos by Mark Hodges
Two events at the IJF sold out: The Peterson Museum Tour with dinner and the Concours Awards Banquet at the Hilton Hotel’s Ronald Reagan Room. While both events were packed, the Concours Awards Banquet was more than just a dinner. It was an event in and of itself. The emcee for the evening was Mark Mayuga, our host and IJF Chairman. Throughout the evening, Charles Anton, from JOCLA, put on a slide show of all the pictures taken during the events. Pretty much everyone from San Diego attended, whether or not they participated in the Concours: Dave Allen, Dick Cavicke, Marco De La Barrera and Serena Silva, Brian and Lisa Ellis (IEJC), Diane Bauman, Joe and Deborah Harding, Mark and Diana Hodges, Tom and Debbie Krefetz with Brian and Kimberly Boyce, Paul and Debby Novak, Dave and Windley Putnam, Allen and Olga Quale, Pete and Christa Rieth, Nedra Rummell, Ed and Karen Soens, Jay and Ann Stamets, Craig Wright and Mary Ann Ward, and Gary and Rikki Zimmerman. The evening began with a cocktail hour; then dinner, which included a chilled seafood bar, a chef carving station – NY steak, plank roasted salmon, greens, vegetables, sides, and desserts. After dinner, we had a panel discussion with VIP sponsors and Jaguar experts, including our own Tom Krefetz. The evening finished up with the Concours Awards. Your emcees for the awards portion were Chief Judge Charlie Hallums and yours truly. Charlie called out the winners and the scores and I handed out the trophies. The trophies were special International Jaguar Festival platters with inserts for winner placement plates. It really was a lot of fun handing out the trophies knowing this was the culmination of more than a year’s work. All in all, I was quite pleased with the Concours and awards banquet. It was a great conclusion to a great day. While both events were a lot of work, it was very rewarding work. My thanks to Charlie Hallums who was right there with me the whole way. Also, my thanks to all who attended, and to everyone who helped with the planning and execution. … Mark

The Scenic Tour and Rideau Vineyard Saturday, November 3rd.
Article by Nedra Rummell Photos by Nedra Rummell, Dave Allen and Matt Allen
On Saturday, attendees had driving options of either an official JCNA Rally or Scenic Tour Drive, both
ending at Rideau Vineyard in Solvang. After Mark Mayuga made an announcement all drivers must have
a navigator, I had the opportunity to drive with Paul Novak in his award winning 1990 V12 VDP since his
wife Debbie opted for touring Santa Barbara. Touring Stewards Linda and Todd Wright did a fantastic job
of planning the route and releasing cars in two-minute intervals from two different gates at the hotel.
Along the way, there were opportunities to take photos, enjoy ancient Chumash Indian Cave paintings,
and view incredible valley vistas. At one point, the “navigator” failed to instruct the “driver” to turn left
instead of right a “T” intersection. As usual, the easy-going Paul Novak suggested we continue and drive
to the top for check out the view. Unaware of our mistake, Will and Maritza Nighswonger followed
unaware of our mistake – we all had a good laugh at the top while Paul’s engine cooled and we enjoyed a
marvelous view. As we continued our route, Paul had the opportunity to add water to the engine and
with no more problems, we arrived at Rideau Vineyard which dates back to the 1800’s in Santa Ynez
Valley. On site was a popular Santa Maria Style BBQ Catering food truck as well as offerings from the
Winery’s restaurant. We all enjoyed lunch in a beautiful setting, meeting new people, seeing old friends,
laughing, and talking Jag-talk before we returned to the hotel for the Monte Carlo night and Dinner.

Monte Carlo Night and the Farewell Breakfast Saturday November 3rd and Sunday November 4th
Article by Nedra Rummell
After enjoying a leisurely drive through the Santa Ynez Valley to Santa Barbara and a quick rest, it was
time the Monte Carlo Night Benefit Dinner. The evening was dedicated to raising funds for the
Coventry Foundation Scholarship Endowment for students attending the automobile restoration school
at PENN Technical College in Williamsport, PA. When entering the beautiful Reagan Room, one could
not miss the Black Jack and Poker Tables as well as a Roulette. However, before the gambling began,
we all enjoyed an incredible Mexican Buffett with outstanding selections. Some people, who shall
remain anonymous, decided to quickly choose their dessert FIRST before dinner ensuring they would
have the elite of the incredible display. Attendees also had an opportunity to participate in a silent
auction featuring abundant out of the ordinary Jaguar merchandise. One hundred percent of the
proceeds from this event were donated to the Coventry Foundation for the Scholarship Endowment in
the name of Jaguar Owners Club of LA and Jaguar Clubs of North America. After enjoying the delicious
dinner, attendees gravitated to the gaming area to let the fun begin, anticipating Lady Luck would be
with them.
December 2018 26
As they say, “All Good Things must come to an End” and the IJF Farewell Breakfast was a Good Thing.
We traded contact information and talked about the fun times we spent together at IJF. As we
enjoyed breakfast, prizes were presented for Furthest Driven Car, Oldest Participating Care, Car with
the Most Mechanical Problems, Individual or Couple dressed in the most Jaguar-ish fashions, and of
course the Grand Raffle Prize. A special thanks to JOC’s Mark Mayuga who planned this incredible
event.
… Nedra
A note from the Editor: You will notice that there are no pictures from the Monte Carlo Night or
the Farewell Breakfast. This may be as a result of photographers running out of film after 4 days
of shooting. Or, and this is just a guess on my part as I wasn’t there, all cameras and film were
confiscated by security personnel during Monte Carlo Night due to rowdy behavior on the part of
some clubs. Certainly not SDJC. Therefore, we’ll close this recap of the International Jaguar Festival
with a salute and thank you to all the hardworking folks that made it happen, some of whom are
pictured below. -Ed.

December 2018 By Pete Rieth, Chief Judge, San Diego Jaguar Club
HAPPY HOLIDAYS to everyone and hearty congratulations to our newly elected Club Officers and Directors!
First and foremost – I want to offer my sincere thanks to all our Concours Judges – past, present and future: To those retired, those who have been on the team for years, those who are in process of qualifying; and to those who have indicated a desire to commit to joining the team as Apprentices in the coming year (you know who you are). Concours forms a major part of SDJC’s annual activities as well as a focal point for interaction with enthusiasts and friends from other clubs in the Southwest and well beyond. SDJC has a well-deserved reputation for maintaining a very high standard of technical proficiency and adherence to the JCNA Rule Book standards of impartiality and fairness. Our own Chief Judges Emeritus Dick Cavicke (now JCNA Chief Judge) and Paul Novak deserve great credit for having made this happen over the years. Dick’s current involvement with bringing a very much needed XK-120 Judge’s Guide to reality is indicative of this spirit. BRAVO ZULU (WELL DONE), Dick and team! Special thanks to the eight SDJC judges and our Apprentice Judge who supported the International Jaguar Festival in Santa Barbara last month. Once again, your individual and collective willingness to offer your technical expertise, diplomacy and professionalism (for which SDJC’s Judge Cadre is well known) went far to making the IJF Concours d’Elegance the memorable and fun event which it became. We all had a fabulous time enjoying a multitude of activities hosted by JOCLA!

Where in the World …. … were the Baily’s?
Well, Stu and Barb were somewhere stuck in the Bermuda Triangle!
Stu tells it like this: “Barb and I were returning from a long European trip by sea. We were treated like royalty, but the ship wandered around and around, never seeming to know where it was, and it wound up here!” “This was a stop on a looong (and rough!) transatlantic crossing. We are members of the Annapolis Yacht Club, and this particular yacht club was kind enough to extend us reciprocity and a calm harbor for a day. We arrived safely in Florida soon after.” ......Stu and Barb Can you guess where Stu and Barb were forced to seek
shelter? Was it the …
A. Royal Typewriter Yacht Club?
B. Royal Pain in the Rear Yacht Club?
C. Royal Bermuda Yacht Club?
Think “Shorts”.
Editor’s note: Remember when going out of town to print out a copy
of the cover page of the most recent “Jaguar Tracks” and take it with
you. When you find a good setting just snap a picture of yourselves
holding up the cover page with a nice view of the scene behind you.
And if you’ve got your Jag in the shot, even better. Then all you need
to do when you get home is email the picture to
[email protected] along with a description of where you’re at
and I’ll do the rest to feature it in a “Where in the Word” article!
