Thursday, May 17, La Bohème, 7:30pm, Tobin - When a shy stranger knocks on the door of a penniless poet, looking for someone to light her candle, they both find something more magical is kindled. Thus begins one of the most beloved and tragic operas ever written, which continues to move audiences to tears with its tale of the doomed love between the poet Rodolfo and the seamstress Mimi. This is sung in Italian with English supertitles. You can purchase tickets by calling (210) 223-8624, or online at HTTP://OPERASA.ORG/EVENTS/PUCCINIS-LA-BOHEMO. The sign-up deadline is May 7. WITH A THANKFUL HEART By Mary Ellen Nelson

With a Thankful Heart for our Wonderful Dining Staff at Blue Skies of Texas, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude for the superb Singles Champagne Brunch which you recently prepared for us. The food and beverages were absolutely delicious, the presentation of the food was simply beautiful and the atmosphere of service was just lovely. I appreciate all the time, effort and love that went into the preparation – and the carrying out – of that special event done by the hostesses Shari Proctor and Lori DeWitt. I thank you for hosting such a professional, first-class and welcoming affair. Special thanks to the Wellness & Life Enrichment team, the Custodians and Housekeeping - all working behind the scenes.

GOLF RANGE NEED By Don Hallager

We are missing two sets of loaner golf clubs from our golf range. If you have borrowed them, please return them so others may enjoy their use. If you have a set of golf clubs you no longer plan to use, please call Don Hallager, and he will pick them up and either add them to our golf range or donate them to First Tee, a youth development organization introducing the game of golf and its inherent values to young people.

RESIDENTS’ CONCERT SERIES By Ginny Hallager

On Sunday, Mar 18, we were treated to some wonderful music presented by three soloists from the San Antonio Opera. Mark Covey, tenor, brought us a dramatic aria by Wagner from Die Walküre - so powerful. He then played the role of “Samson,” from the opera by that name by Handel. He showed the contrast of light and dark as Samson struggles with his blindness. Lisa Owens, soprano, sang a very recognizable aria “O mio babbino caro” from the opera Gianni Schicchi by Puccini. Lisa and Jennifer Quintero brought us another well-known piece, “The Flower Duet” from the opera Lakmé. Jennifer sang a very modern number in English from Dead Man Walking by Jack Heggie. The final number was from La bohème, recognizable to a majority of the audience. The singers were skillfully supported on the piano by accompanist Mark Alexander. This was another satisfying afternoon of great music. Join us on Sunday, May 20, for a piano concert by the youth Ambassadors from the San Antonio International Piano Competition (SAIPC). See you on Sunday, May 20, at 3 pm in the Lobby of BSTW.

GREAT COURSES DISCUSSION GROUP By Allan Novak

The course is presented in the format of DVD lectures followed by brief discussion. Come join us – there is no cost and new participants are welcome at any time. GREAT FOOD IN SAN ANTONIO By The Clandestine Gourmet

Need a pizza or nachos to keep you going while you slave away on those pesky tax forms? A good choice not too far away from Blue Skies West is Fremdes in Castroville. Fremdes is located next to the well-known Castroville Café (and is owned by the same people), so if your significant other wants something other than pizza, you can order from the cafe at the same time. Fremdes is a friendly place where you can also dine on the beautiful patio with friends and listen to live music on Friday and Saturday from 6-9pm. Fremde in Alsatian for “Outsider,” so Fremdes sees itself as a friendly meeting place for customers to gather and relax over good food and drink. A favorite pizza is the “Fremde,” which has a little of everything, including a balsamic vinegar glaze; Mrs. CD likes the vegetarian pizza. Whichever you get, the pizza quality here is a step above that of most pizza locations on this side of town.

HOBBY OF AND FOR A LIFETIME By Bill Overacker

Ruth Willet, KM4LAO, a freshman at Kettering University in Michigan, attracted the attention of her classmates and staff via her ham radio activities. The recipient of multiple Amateur Radio awards and guest speaker at two Hamventions, she has inspired interest to start an Amateur Radio Club on campus this spring. Her fascination with Morse code motivated her to obtain her license in 2015. In her talks and writings she expresses, “Ham radio is a hobby of and for a lifetime; allows one to explore anything from technical electronics to international friendships; provides emergency communication in times of disaster; and alleviates her stress.” Ruth admirably relates the attributes of being an Amateur Radio Operator. All are welcome to learn more about this exciting and beneficial Hobby. The next Amateur Radio Club meeting occurs on Thursday, Apr 19, at 11:30am in Room CC1. WRIGHT PAT MAH JONGG By Martha Wesson

Have we talked lately about the most lucky, fantastic, fun hand of all? It is called a “Hand from Heaven,” which means someone can Mah Jongg (win) immediately. So, for instance, after the Charleston (the trading of three tiles each to the right, across, and then to the left) either the player who is East can win right away because she already has one of the eighty-five possible winning hands, or someone else can win right then on the discard of East’s first turn. So…there was Lynne, a relatively new player to the game, who only needed one tile to finish up a sequence from one to nine. She had the Dragons required for a hand and was waiting for a six crack and (boom), didn’t Martha innocently put it down as her first discard as East. Lynne called for it and won with Dragon Lineup. And there it was, a “Hand from Heaven” and a quick end of that round. We were happy for her, but so amazed that we just sat and sputtered and carried on. Wow, are we easily entertained? Maybe so, but we do laugh a lot and look forward to the next session no matter what happens. Perhaps you will too! Come by CC3 on Tuesday afternoons and see what you think!

NATIONAL MAH JONGG LEAGUE By Gayl Ganskow

Click, click, tiles are mixed and walls are built. You’ve given tiles not of your choosing and you choose a hand. You pass off what you don’t want, hoping to get what you need. Hey, what in the world is “mash pit?” The game continues, draw and discard (don’t forget to rack)! Laughter is heard. Mistakes are made. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. But it’s still the best game going to keep us on our toes and our minds alert! Come and enjoy Playing Session: Wednesdays, 1-3:30pm in CC3, Fridays, 1-3:30pm in CC3 and All B&A Days, 2nd Wednesday of each month in Card Room 112. The Card Room is located across from the Thrift Shop on the first floor.

BST WEST BILLIARD ASSOCIATION NEWS By Mike Slominski

9-Ball, Tuesday, Mar 20: Only five today. Talley Ho dumps T-Man, Wild Bill dumps Big Dog, Dandy Don dumps Talley Ho and Big Dog sends T-man home. Then, Wild Bill sends Dandy Don to the lower level; Talley Ho sends Big Dog back to his kennel and defeats Dandy Don. Wild Bill and Talley Ho square off with Wild Bill winning all the marbles as he rides off into the sunset. Congratulations Wild Bill.

8-Ball, Saturday, Mar 24: Big crowd today, eight. In the first go around Dandy Don, Talley Ho, Big John and T-Man skunked Chicago, Chief, Wild Bill and Pro. At the lower level, Chief sent Chicago home, as did the Pro to Wild Bill. Then Dandy Don sent Talley Ho to the lower level and so did Big John to the T-Man. Then T-Man sent Chief home, Pro sent Talley Ho home after a five-ball run leaving T-man and Pro facing off. Pro wins. On top, Big John enters the finals by sending Dandy Don to the lower level to face the Pro. Dandy Don gets lucky and beats the Pro, but Big John beats Dandy Don in the finals with a win in the first game. Well don, Big John.

9-Ball, Tuesday, Mar 27: Guests editor today. Five players showed up. In game one, T-Man made a nine-ball combo to win against Wild Bill. In game two, Talley Ho broke and continued to make all nine balls to down Big John. In game three, T-Man made a nine-ball combo to beat Dandy Don. In four, Wild Bill overcame Big John, and in five Talley Ho won over the T-man with a combo on the nine-ball. Wild Bill overcame Dandy Don in game six, then T-man used two rails on the nine-ball to down Wild Bill in game seven. In the finals, T-Man downed Talley Ho for two straight games to win the day. Congratulations to the T-Man.

8-Ball, Saturday, Mar 31: Eight players, 14 games, five decided by a coin toss, three decided by a scratched eight-ball shot; six games actually completed by someone winning the game. It was embarrassing. Over-all winner was Talley Ho who absolutely denied Wild Bill (who never even got a shot) in the final game with an Eight-Ball Run!
