Several principals/vice-principals are required to provide feedback to the Ministry about its 2015-2016 exam schedule. Among the factors under consideration are: potential conflicts; balancing semesters for determining the January session; number of students who write in each session; timing for central and local marking of exams; and other considerations that may arise. The draft will be distributed to participants in late November.

The 29th annual DuPont Challenge Science Essay Competition has intro-duced a new division and expanded grade levels to include students in

grades K-5, grades 6-8, and grades 9-12. The competition is open to stu-dents in Canada and the US. The Challenge encourages students to develop a better understanding and passion for STEM (science, technology, engineer-ing and mathematics) by researching and writing an informative essay of-fering solutions to today’s challenges regarding food, energy, protection and innovation, or a story on a science discovery. The top three winners in each division, plus a parent and sponsoring teacher, receive an expenses-paid trip to the Walt Disney World® Resort and a tour of the Kennedy Space Center in Orlando. Winning students also receive a savings bond and sponsoring teachers receive an expenses-paid trip to the NSTA national conference in 2016. All winners receive digital reference materials from Britannica Digital Learning and the NBC Learn Science Collection for both their personal use and for their entire school.

This past week, I attended the BCSSA fall conference and had numerous

opportunities to meet and re-connect with leaders and members from several of our partner groups. I was able to discuss educational issues with many different people, some of whom hold very different perspectives from those of us working in school buildings. It was a refreshing and

enlightening experience. Deputy Minister Dave Byng spoke on Ministry priorities such as the implementation of the BC Education Plan, advancing the Skills for Jobs blueprint, and the strategy to earn economic efficiencies through shared services in education. He also called for stronger partnerships through a clarification of roles. He said September’s collective agreement with teachers offers “a rare long-term window” to build partnerships and work together. Andy Hargreaves of Boston College shared ideas from his latest book, Uplifting Leadership: How Organizations, Teams, and Communities Raid Performance (co-authored by Alan Boyle and Alma Harris). He encouraged delegates to articulate an inspiring dream and pursue that vision with vigor. He also spoke of four areas to invest in: building social capital; putting leadership first; schools working with schools; and, a collective responsibility before accountability. I also had the opportunity to meet with Shelley Green, our Past President (now Associate Superintendent, Victoria School Board). We discussed the work of our Association and the road ahead and I couldn’t help but reflect that we talked about articulating and chasing an inspiring vision with vigor, and connecting leaders to achieve a shared goal. My thanks to everyone at BCSSA for developing such a thought-inspiring program.

Early bird registration for the CAP/BCPVPA conference in Whistler ends in 11 days. Connecting Leaders: Inspiring Learning has four great keynote speakers — Wab Kinew, Simon Breakspear, Jesse Miller, and Frederick Brown — and more than 30 breakout sessions, many of them led by colleagues from BC. I encourage you to look over the program http://bit.ly/1utETY2 and to register http://bit.ly/1utETY2. One of our breakout speakers at this conference is North Vancouver District Principal

President Gordon Li ona inspiring a vision,

achieving goals
