Escribiente is a non-profit organization of persons dedicated to the advancement and promotion of calligraphy. Meetings are held at 6:30 pm on the first Wednesday of eachmonth, except for January and July. December’s holiday meeting will be announced. We meet at Manzano Mesa Multi-Generational Center (southwest corner of Elizabeth andSouthern). Yearly dues are $25 for in-state members and are payable May-July. Greetings, enjoyed ones:Well, this is my last letter. I’ve actually fretted for a week about what tosay, and I’ve decided a review is in order. The bottom line is you guysare da bomb and you should be proud of our work. We’ve committedto a web site, AND we keep it updated! We’ve grown by leaps andbounds. We’re ever-more frequently in the public eye (who started thesebookmark things? I think they’re great for visibility). We’ve weatheredsome severe losses, but they haven’t harmed us permanently. The mini-workshop thing is growing, and we are filling major workshops. We area vibrant, welcoming, fun community of people interested in letters. Itdoesn’t get betters!

Now, if anyone cares, this is what I’d like to see in the future: moreinvolved members; perhaps more play days; maybe some middle work-shops, lasting a day? more service programs (valentines for soldiers gotlost this year, and I think it’s important) (so does my cousin in the

Guard); more involvement inshows—remember, a show is *not* acompetition. Well, I guess it adds upto more of all the things we arealready doing well.

Ron will, of course, have his ownvisions for the group. Go for it, Ron!

I thank you each, personally andcorporately, for a jolly good time.Thank you!

Engrosser’s Script, better knownas Copperplate was the workshoppresented by Bill Kemp the 10th

and 11th of April. This workshopoffered the 14 scribes present, theknowledge and skill to master thishand. Bill, as always, conducted aworkshop that was fun and gaveus the knowledge to masterEngrosser’s Script, as long as wepractice.

The first day of the workshop,Bill gave us everything that wewould need for the class. Hehanded out his excellent bookthat gave us a brief history of thebeginnings of Copperplate, thebest nibs to use, and what paperwill work while we learn thisscript. Throughout the first day,Bill used his overhead projector. That saved us time movingback and forth between his demonstrations, and our ownpractice. After his demonstrations, Bill gave personal atten-tion to each of us to develop our own skill.

The second day we went over the Capitals. Bill emphasizedthat we will have to practice, even as we learn more aboutEngrosser’s Script. He shared original documents that he hascollected, including one from Bill Lilly, his mentor andteacher.

This work-shop waswonderful, Ilearned a lotand myCopperplatehand hasimprovedgreatly. Now Ihave to go“practice”.

An accidental discovery in a labora-tory at Oregon State University hasapparently solved a quest that overthousands of years has absorbed theenergies of ancient Egyptians, theHan dynasty in China, Mayancultures and more – the creation ofa near-perfect blue pigment.

Through much ofrecorded human history,people have soughtinorganic compoundsthat could be used topaint things blue, oftenwith limited success.Most had environmentalor durability issues.Cobalt blue, developedin France in the early1800s, can be carcino-genic. Prussian blue canrelease cyanide. Other blue pigmentsare not stable when exposed to heator acidic conditions.

But chemists at Oregon StateUniversity have discovered newcompounds based on manganesethat should address all of thoseconcerns. They are safer to produce,much more durable, and should leadto more environmentally benignblue pigments than any being usednow or in the past. Also, they cansurvive at extraordinarily hightemperatures and don’t fade after aweek in an acid bath.

The findings were just published inthe Journal of the AmericanChemical Society, and a patent hasbeen applied for on the compositionof the compound and the processused to create it. The research wasfunded by the National ScienceFoundation.

“Basically, this was an accidentaldiscovery,” said Mas Subramanian,the Milton Harris Professor ofMaterials Science in the OSU

Variations of a new bluepigment were developedby chemists at Oregon

State University, based onmanganese.

Accidental discovery produces durable new blue pigmentDepartment of Chemistry. “Wewere exploring manganese oxidesfor some interesting electronicproperties they have, something thatcan be both ferroelectric andferromagnetic at the same time. Ourwork had nothing to do withlooking for a pigment.

“Then one day a graduatestudent working in theproject, was takingsamples out of a very hotfurnace while I waswalking by, and it wasblue, a very beautifulblue,” he said. “I realizedimmediately that some-thing amazing hadhappened.”

What had happened, theresearchers said, was that at about1,200 degrees centigrade – almost2,000 degrees Fahrenheit – thisotherwise innocuous manganeseoxide turned into a vivid bluecompound that could be used tomake a pigment able to resist heatand acid, be environmentally benignand cheap to produce from a readilyavailable mineral.

The newest – and possibly the best– blue pigment in world history wasborn, due to manganese ions beingstructured in anunusual “trigonalbipyramidal coordina-tion” in the presenceof extreme heat.

“Ever since the earlyEgyptians developedsome of the first bluepigments, the pigmentindustry has beenstruggling to address

problems with safety, toxicity anddurability,” Subramanian said.

It is possible that the pigment mayeventually find uses in everythingfrom inkjet printers to automobiles,fine art or house paint.

In their journal article, the scientistssaid that the new compound yields“a surprisingly intense and brightblue color,” and they have outlinedits structure and characteristics indetail. Collaborating on the workwere researchers in the MaterialsDepartment at the University ofCalifornia/Santa Barbara.

“A lot of the most interestingdiscoveries are not really planned,we’ve seen that throughout history,”Subramanian said. “There is luckinvolved, but I also teach mystudents that you have to stay alertto recognize something when ithappens, even if it isn’t what youwere looking for.”

“Luck favors the alert mind.”

• Use Murphy’s Oil Soap to clean driedacrylic on brushes. Soak overnight,then clean with soapy water.• After washing out brushes, draw bothsides of the brush across a bar of Ivorysoap a few times, then pull betweenthumb and forefinger to shape thebristles to a sharp point.The bristles dry stiffly with a thin flattip that’s just right. The soap will rinseout with a swish in fresh water. Option:dip into liquid dish soap, shape and letdry.• If your brush is looking bent orsplayed, clean it first and dip into GumArabic or dish soap. Gently stroke toreshape and let dry. Rinse in water toreuse.•Slip a piece of aquarium tubing overbrittle ends of watercolor brushes ornib points to keep clean and straight,and to protect them when traveling.

NIBS• Place rusty nibs in a film canister and coverwith lemon juice, vinegar or oxalic acid. Theacid will cut through the rust to the metal andthe residue can be wiped off.• Dental floss can be used to clean theslits on a split-nib pen.• For a clean pen nib, use toothpaste thatincludes baking soda. Rub the paste onthe nib with your fingers or soft brush,rinse and dry.• To clean nib, rinse any excess of ink orpaint with water, then place in jewelrycleaner. Use a brush to finish cleaningand let dry.• Store nibs in a container with the silica-gel packages found in packaging mate-rial to absorb any excess moisture.• For a handy nib case, place self adhe-sive magnetic strips in a small box toeasily keep nibs in order. When using ametal tin, simply lay magnetic strips inplace.

Where are you from?

I, Esther Feske, (for the tongue-tied Fester Esky or Esker Feste)was born in Independence (Mo.)- a good omen for an artist! Mymother and aunt were school artteachers and my father was amachinist who invented and fixedanything. He was also a layminister and a stubborn German.I learned how to analyze aproblem and find solutions fromhim, how things work and howto fix them. I did lots of music -piano, clarinet, bassoon, and later,folk guitar and drums.

Educational/art background?

I got a BA in Art Educationfrom Graceland College, Lamoni,Iowa. At the University of Iowain January 1970, I first studiedcalligraphy, and the next semesterbecame the Teaching Assistantfor Calligraphy I classes. I re-ceived MA and MFA degrees inart, majoring in graphic designand photography (the latter byaccident - by taking every photoclass). Then I worked for aregionally-famous photographer,Joan Liffring-Zug Bourret, andher publishing company, PenfieldPress, designing, proofreading,pasting-up and occasionallyediting books of regional andethnic interest. When did you move to Albu-querque?

In 1984 I moved to Albuquer-que, where I tried to be afreelance graphic designer, butbeing naturally shy and lackingconfidence, that didn’t provesuccessful. After several yearsand jobs from hell, I found realestate appraising, took classesand became Registered. Workingfor an appraiser and for a mort-gage broker used my interest inarchitecture, how things aremade, detailed work, organizing,and lifelong learning. I also tookcomputer courses at TVI/CNM,learning PageMaker andPhotoshop. More recently, Iworked as a customer servicerepresentative for a local natural-building-materials manufacturerfor three years, where I alsoanswered technical questions andhelped write instruction manuals.The downturn in the economy,

especially in construction,prompted my layoff in 2009.

What/who got you started?

In 2001 I got my first formaltraining in bookbinding fromMita Saldana of Against theGrain bookbinding studio. Idiscovered The Perfect Mediumfor combining ALL my artisticinterests: calligraphy, photogra-phy, love of paper/materials,design, construction, recycling,collage, assemblage, painting,drawing, detailed technique,along with iconoclasm, irrever-ence, sarcasm, parody andlusciousness.What do you plan to do or seeas a goal for your artistictalents?

Since being laid off from my‘regular job’ I have been consid-ering what I want to do with therest of my life.... I have decidedit’s time to just ‘be’ an artist, nomore waiting or any excuses.Since declaring that, I have hadnew requests for my artisticskills, including calligraphy,inventing artist books, andcollaborating with another bookartist and using my experience inpublishing. I also enjoy teachinglittle workshops, and am organiz-ing materials for a number ofdifferent topics. Recent topicsinclude: One-page books, whirl-wind books, embossed metal

Painting (untitled) acrylic on canvas, 1993What if calligraphic strokes themselves were the subject of a painting?Inspired by Mark Tobey and Ulfert Wilke, 20th century American paint-ers, I thought I’d give it a try. This first painting came out rather formal,with hard edges, but I can imagine countless variations in colors, scale,speed of painting and looseness of brushwork. And since I love theshapes of letters, this painting is very satifsfying to me.

“Lost and Found”, the notebooks of Cervantes, were in-spired by reading that Cervantes had a job which caused himto travel around Spain. Imagining that life, and his later literaryachievement, I inferred that he made notes and jotted downstories he heard. I asked myself-what if some of his notebookswere lost, and found only recently? What would they look like?And I set out to replicate that idea. I made two books, onemostly filled in, and one, as yet, blank.For covers, burned corral boards from a friend made a nicestart. I wire-brushed, stained and oiled them to get the rightpatina. For pages, a sample book of paper provided variousshades of laid paper, rather similar to what would have beenavailable at that time. Pages were stained, burned and writtenupon with three different brown inks and in a rather scrawlyItalic hand, as if they were written at various times and situa-tions (I wrote on my lap to get this effect). My research saidthat the literate Spanish of his time were trained by Italians, soI selected a Northern Italian Italic from the period. I made upthat he could also draw, as this was going to be rather boringwithout illustrations!For text, I used the Antique Spanish version of Don Quixotefrom a university in Texas, selected various passages andpoems and copied for hours. When I got really bored copyingDon Quixote, I made up some pages in Spanglish, about afew friends and myself, as if we were people Cervantes en-countered.The binding is a rusty 3-wire-ring binding, my imaginary ver-sion of an early spiral notebook. Since any book of that timewas hand-made, Cervantes was monogrammed on the frontwith a C. Now, these books are not good fakes and would notpass any forensic tests, but they are a fun exploration into oneaspect of the life of Cervantes. And they took far longer toaccomplish than I would have imagined when I idly asked“What if Cervantes lost his notebooks?”

The inscription in Latin loosely translates to...

Completed in113, the TrajanColumn is amonument inRome whichcommemoratesemperor Trajan’svictory in theDacian Wars. It islocated inTrajan’s Forumnorth of theRoman Forum.Sometime in theMiddle Ages, thestatue of Trajanwhich sat atopthe columndisappeared,and in 1587 wasreplaced with astatue of St.Peter.

Let’s have a HUGE turnout of entries forthe Calligraphy Division in the CreativeArts Building at the State Fair this year!!This is such a good way to, not only getthe ‘word’ out that Calligraphy is alive andwell, but it’s a great way for you to prac-tice, frame and show your work...no mat-ter what level you are. There is lots of roomto hang beautiful broadsides, and spacein glass cases to display your handmadebooks, cards and miniatures.

Entries will be takenSeptember 2, 3 and 4th, 2010.

The fair will be held September 10-26(closed Mondays and Tuesdays).Remember, the Calligraphy display is thefirst thing people see when they come intothe Creative Arts Building.
