PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

Waste ManagementIndia is the second largest nationin the world, with a population of1.21 billion, accounting for nearly18% of world’s human population, but i t does not hav e enoughresources or adequate systems inplace to treat i ts solid wastes.Waste management is all thoseactiv ities and action required to

manage waste from its inception to its final disposal. The modernization of the societies, in a large measure,is technology driven. One of the negative consequencesof this process is generation of waste at an increasingrate. We have to take appropriate actions to manageour waste. These actions are also bound to betechnology driven. Our focus has to be

(i) Reduction of waste material,(ii) Their utilization and their recycling and(iii) Appropriate final disposal .

The Earth system neither has infinite resources tocater for unlimited consumption nor the capacity tosustain unlimited waste. Our aim should be tobecome globally a recycling oriented society thatconserves natural resources to the possible ultimatelimit. With rapid urbanization, the situation isbecoming critical. The urban population has grownfivefold in the last six decades with 285.35 millionpeople living in urban areas as per the 2001 Census. The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) hasestimated that waste generation will exceed 260million tonnes per year by 2047—more than five timesthe present level.

All living organisms create waste, but humanscreate far more waste than other species. To preventdamaging the Earth’s ecosystems and maintain ahigh quality of life for the planet’s inhabitants, humansmust manage and store their waste efficiently andsafely.Disposal of waste is the most neglected areaof Solid Waste Management (SWM) services and thecurrent practices are grossly unscientific. Almost allmunicipal authorities deposit solid waste at a dump-yard situated within or outside the city haphazardlyand do not bother to spread and cover the waste withinert material. India is facing a sharp contrastbetween its increasing urban population and availableservices and resources. Solid waste management isone such service where India has an enormous gap to

fill. Proper municipal solid waste disposal systems toaddress the burgeoning amount of wastes are absent. The current SWM services are inefficient, incur heavyexpenditure and are so low as to be a potential threatto the public health and environmental quality.

Clean India Mission and ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ abbreviated as SBA or SBM for “Swachh BharatMission” is a national campaign by the Governmentof India, covering 4,041 statutory cities and towns, toclean the streets, roads and infrastructure of thecountry. The campaign was officially launched on 2October 2014 at New Delhi, where PrimeMinister himself  cleaned  the  road. He  said  that  thebest memorial to Mahatma Gandhi would be toachieve a “Clean India” by 2019, his 150th birthanniversary. It is India’s biggest ever cleanliness driveand 3 million government employees and school andcollege students of India participated in this event. This campaign aims to accomplish the vision of a‘Clean India’ by 2 October 2019, the 150th birthday ofMahatma Gandhi. The specific objectives are:

1. Eliminate open defecation by constructing toilets forhouseholds, communities

2. Eradicate manual scavenging3. Introduce modern and scientific municipal solid

waste management practices4. Enable private sector participation in the sanitation

sector5. Change people’s attitudes to sanitation and create

awareness

The program plans to construct 12 crore toilets inrural India by October 2019, at a projected cost of Rs.1096 lakh crore (US$29 billion). Solid waste hierarchycovering the monetary value of environmental impact ofvarious types of pollution that occur in production ofwaste and its management plays a role in examiningtechnical, economic and environmental justification forthe solid waste management. The hierarchy must rankwaste management methods. On the hierarchy list, reduction of generation of waste at the source deservesto come at the top. It should be followed by recyclingand composting what cannot be reduced and finally, the disposal of the remainder.

QUOTE FOR THE MONTHDifficulties do come in life, but to overcomedifficulties, one needs to be strong & strengthcomes only through spiritual knowledge.

WIT AND WISDOM A relationship with God is the most important

relationship you can have. Trust in him and everythingwill always turn out fine.

Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind of the present moment.

— Buddha Limitations live only in our minds. but if we use our

imaginations, our possibilities become limitless. Bridge and Wall are made with the same material but

bridge joins people and wall divides the people.Choose the right one.

Feelings are important in our life as they come fromheart.. If you respond back, they grow..If you ignore, theydie, and if you respect, they stay forever.

Opportunities are never lost, they are always taken bythe people who are ready.

Life is too short to worry about stupid things. Have fun, regret nothing and never let anyone bring you down.

Nobody is a loser in Life, because the game of Life onlyends when you die. So while you are Alive, you cannotLose. The game is still on. You always have a secondchance to make a comback. Be a winner!!!!

To worry is the worst way predicting what will happennext. It achieves nothing while consuming a lot of yourtime and energy. Let things unravel and trust in yourability to overcome whatever comes your way.

Never say you don't have enough time. You have exactlythe same number of hours that were given to theworld's greatest people. Make best of it.
