Presidents LetterPlease excuse the last-minute change onnewsletter format. Brenda Black has beendoing a great job churning out each editionfor the last two years or so and thenexperienced a computer crash, so I hurriedlywhipped this months issue up and herewe are. Brenda has informed the ASABoard of Directors that she will officiallyend her editorship when her term assecretary is completed this August. Thatmeans the ASA is looking for anewsletter editor. If you have any talentand/or desires in this area, please let one ofthe board members know.

Another area the ASA Board will beaddressing is ways to maximize revenueand keep expenses in check. Onepossibility is to send the newsletter by emailto all members so equipped. With postageand duplicating costs continuing to increase, this could save the ASA several hundreddollars per year.

NorthStar College is preparing an offer tothe ASA for leasing meeting space thatthe Board will look at in the near future. This lease would be slightly less than we

are now paying for more hours of spaceusage. We also would not have to juggleNovember dates, which arent alwaysavailable at the Senior Center.

The Board will explore other revenue-generating ideas as well. The Board willinform the membership in advance of anychanges, and membership input is alwaysappreciated.

The Nodes: Where We HaveBeen and Where We Are Going.

Instead of going through a cookbookversion of what the nodes mean in eachsign and house, Bonnie talked about themeaning of the nodes according tovarious traditions and astrologers.

In Hindu astrology, both the north andsouth nodes are both hard to live withand very malefic. They are enemies ofthe Sun and Moon. Whenever we havean eclipse, the nodes are within 12degrees of the Sun (solar eclipse) or theMoon (lunar eclipse). Hindus see themas trying to eat the Sun or Moon.

Buz Myers emphasized the importanceof the prenatal eclipse. Every 19 years, that eclipse shows up again, marking aturning point in your life. In a separatecycle, every 18.6 years, the north nodereturns its natal spot. This nodal return issubtle; when the first one occurs, youmay only notice a stirring of what youwant to do or be. Then, you forget it andgo back to normal life. Around ages 35-27, it happens again. Sometimes, thisnodal return brings us a strongconviction of what were here for.

Buz also said that the nodes are family-related. If the south node is conjunctSaturn, theres a past-life connectionwith the father. Like Saturn Retrograde, this is often found if the father is absentor unavailable. The south noderepresents unfinished business.

According to the Hindus, the 10th houseis the house of fate and destiny. It is

ruled by Saturn, the Lord of Karma. Ifthe south node is in the 10th, the life isvery fated. Bonnie has noted thatsometimes people with south node in the6th are natural healers.

Bruno and Louise Huber, in their bookMoon-Node Astrology, state the northnode is our lodestar. If your north nodeis on the western side of your chart, youhave to interact with other people toachieve it. Is your north node in thesame element as your Ascendant? Thenit will be easier to achieve your goals. Isit in an incompatible element? There willbe struggles. The Hubers also believethat the house of your north node is allthat matters; the sign is unimportant.Bonnie recommends their book above allothers on the Moons nodes.

Martin Schulman, in The Moon sNodes: Reincarnation and KarmicAstrology, tells us that this life is just achapter in the book of our souls life.Alexander Ruperti tells us not to judgeour south node in a negative fashion. The south node is a habit pattern, andhabits are hard to break. Jan Spiller haswritten extensively about the nodes inAstrology for the Soul. Although this is acookbook, it is a good one that reflectsthe many years she spent working on it.

Many books say that we should strivetoward the north node and away fromthe south node. But, says Bonnie, bothour nodes are us. We cannot just ignoreour south node. It represents a habitpattern, one we always fall back on, andthis is why it is bad. It is an area wherewe are not very conscious.

There can be up to 2 degrees ofdifference between the true and mean

  • nodes. Bonnie uses the true nodes. Shealso uses transits to nodes, aspects tonodes, and transiting nodes in herastrology work. The transiting northnode spends about 1 years in eachsign. When the north node conjuncts aplanet, pay close attentionit brings outthe energies of the planet.

At the time of the lecture, the true northnode was in 29 degrees of Taurus.Though this is associated with theweeping sisters fixed star, it also givesyou second sight and great insight. Sincethe nodes travel backwards, we have allof Taurus to go through.

A journey of a thousand miles beginswith a single step. When we really hookinto our north node, we are beginningthat journey.

William Lilly and EvangelineAdams: Two Great Astrologers

    William Lilly

William Lilly is the undisputed master ofhorary astrology. His magnum opus,Christian Astrology, is the definitivebook on the subject in English. Born in1602 in Leicestershire, England, Lillywanted to study medicine but had toleave the university at the age of 17,when his father was thrown into debtorsprison. Lilly walked to London, arrivingon Palm Sunday, and found employmentwith Gilbert Wright, a salt merchant. Two years later, when Wrights wifewas dying of cancer, Lilly helped nurseher. She died in 1625. Wright remarriedbut died in 1627. Six months later, Lilly

married the widow and became afreeman of the Salters Company.

In 1633, Lillys wife died, leaving him alegacy of nearly 1,000 pounds, which heused to buy real estate. Meanwhile hehad begun studying occultism andastrology, and in 1641, seeing there wasmoney to be made, set up as aprofessional astrologer. In 1647, hepublished Christian Astrology, and in1666, he predicted the Great Fire ofLondon, which prompted the cityauthorities to throw him into prisonunder suspicion of having caused thefire. His well-connected friends, knowing how good an astrologer Lillywas, obtained his release. He died in1681 a wealthy man, happily married tohis third wife.

William Lilly was one of the bestastrologers of the 17th

century. He wasalso a man who followed his dream, however long delayed. Once he becamerich and successful, he completed hismedical studies and ministered to thepoor. He didnt always charge fordoctoring, but he always charged for hisastrological servicesa practice Bonniesays we all should follow.

    Evangeline Adams

Like William Lilly, Evangeline Adamsachieved fame and fortune through herpractice of astrology. She became thebest-known astrologer of her day and dida great deal to make astrologyrespectable.

Although it is not widely known, sheused William Lillys ideas in herastrology. Since people in his daygenerally knew their birth date but not

  • the time, he would erect a chart for whenthey came through his door and put theirplanets around that chart. Being a giftedastrologer, he could read their question, and the answer, from that chart.Evangeline Adams used a similartechnique when she predicted thedestruction of the Windsor Hotelherfirst big case and the one whichestablished her astrological credentials.

Evangeline Adams birth data is verifiedas Feb. 8, 1868, at 8:30 am in JerseyCity, New Jersey, making her anAquarian with Pisces rising. She wasborn into the upper class, but when shewas 15 months old, her father died, having lost most of his money. Therewas just enough to educate the boys inthe family. Adams was not healthy as ayoung woman; and between illnessesand accidents she saw a great deal of herdoctor, J. Heber Smith, who was also anastrologer. He became her mentor. Onceshe reached adulthood, she went to workas a secretary in a flour mill in order tosupport her mother. When her motherdied, Adams did the unthinkable bybreaking the engagement and moving toNew York. The date, which she pickedfrom her own chart, was March 16,1899, and she was 31 years old.

There she took a suite for at the WindsorHotelthe only hotel that would allowher to set up an astrology practice on itspremises. She warned the proprietor,Warren Leland, that he was in imminentdanger and that a disaster mighthappen the very next day. Leland, thinking of the stock market, airilydismissed her prediction since March 17was a holiday. The next day, the hotelburned to the ground. Leland died 17days later. The fireand Adams

    predictionmade all the headlines.

Adams was a relentless self-promoter.She often dressed up as a gypsy to readpalms at clubs and parties. Little did thepatrons know that the gold dust shesprinkled on their palms was actually atype of cleaning powder. Her careersoon took off, and she numbered amongher clients the rich and famous, including J. Paul Getty Sr., WallisSimpson, and J.P. Morgan. She charged$50 for a 30-minute reading, andemployed a number of secretaries whotyped her mail order readings for clientsoutside of New York City.

She was arrested several times forfortune-telling. The last time thishappened, she became determined tomake astrology legal in New York. Sheappeared in court with her books andchallenged the judge to give her the dataof anyone he chose. When he did, sheerected the chart and read it in opencourt. At the conclusion of the reading, the judge was so impressed that hedropped all charges, saying thedefendant raises astrology to the dignityof an exact science. That chart had beenthat of his son. The story was picked upby magazines throughout the country, and requests poured in for readings. Oneof the people clamoring for a readingwas a young woman in Panguitch, Utah,Client A, whose reading survives andwas given to Bonnie by the womansgranddaughter. The reading will bereproduced on www.azastrologers.org.

Evangeline Adams called the Ascendantruler your star of destiny. Client Asruler was Mars. Since her birth timewasnt mentioned in the typed reading,Bonnies astrology group in Utah

  • painstakingly rectified it to the earlydegrees of Scorpio. The client was abeautiful woman, musical and artistic, but she was married to a banker whobored her (Taurus on the 7th). She turnedto drink and eventually became involvedwith a man who promised to take her toParis and marry her. When she left herhusband to join her lover in Heber City, she learned that he had been lying to herall along and she killed herself.

The granddaughter feels herself to havebeen a reincarnation of Client A, andthere are links between their charts. Sheworks in the medical field and counselsdrug and alcohol abusers. The charts forthe client and the granddaughter arereproduced on the website, along withEvangeline Adams own chart.

Evangeline Adams published fourbooks: her autobiography, The Bowl ofHeaven (1926); Astrology, Your Place inthe Sun (1927); Astrology, Your PlaceAmong the Stars (1930); and Astrologyfor Everyone (1931). In 1932, shecancelled a lecture tour because her ownchart told her she might die, and she wasright. She died of heart disease inNovember after being seriously ill forthree days.

A biography of Evangeline Adams, entitled Foreseeing the Future:Evangeline Adams and Astrology inAmerica, has recently been published byKaren Christino.
