APRIL 2018 The Broward Public Library Foundation was founded in 1982 to enhance the collections, programs and services of the Broward County Library beyond the means of public funding. The nonprofit Foundation is the catalyst in sparking private funding and endowments to enrich the Broward County Library system. News of Interest from the Broward Public Library Foundation Just a few more weeks to go before the Literary Feast 2018 weekend! With the help of 30 dinner hosts, 40 sponsors and 45 volunteers, Literary Feast Co-Chairs Ann Burris and Merrie Meyers are looking forward to welcoming 16 best-selling authors to Broward County for a celebration of books and writers on May 4-5. The Helen Ingham Foundation is the Literary Feast Presenting Sponsor, and South Florida’s superstar author Brad Meltzer is the Honorary Chair. Tickets are on sale now for the May 5 Night of Literary Feasts fundraising evening that begins with a Welcome Reception, underwritten by JM Family Enterprises, at the Pier Sixty-Six Hotel and Marina, and continues on to a series of dinners with an author in private homes and restaurants throughout the Fort Lauderdale area.Tickets are $175 per person and can be purchased on the Foundation website, www.bplfoundation.org. We are still accepting items for the lavish silent auction. Donations can be sent to the Foundation office, or a local pick-up can be arranged. Bidders are invited to browse and bid on items using their mobile device starting April 30 through 10:30 p.m. May 5 at www.bidpal.net/literaryfeast. Items will include a ride on the Goodyear Blimp, a 7-day Holland America Line cruise and a Fenway Park experience. Bidders do not have to be present to win. This year we’ve also partnered with Kendra Scott at the Welcome Reception. For a $50 donation, you’ll receive a gift-wrapped piece of jewelry valued between $50 and $300. On May 4, the authors will visit Broward high schools during Author Day for Students, underwritten by Bank of America Charitable Foundation and Lorraine Thomas. That evening, they will speak at three Barnes & Noble stores (see accompanying list of authors and locations) at the free LitLIVE! event, sponsored by Nova Southeastern University. The Literary Feast proceeds support 15 Broward County Library programs, including the upcoming Summer Learning Program and free SAT/ACT classes for high school students. Just a few more weeks to go before the Literary Feast 2018 weekend!

Free Conference Celebrates the Art of the Picture Book

APRIL 2018

A picture book can open a world of imagination, and an upcoming conference at the Main Library highlights ways adults can bring books to life and create enthusiasm in young readers.

The 31st annual Conference on Children’s Literature and 16th annual Ashley Bryan Art Series celebrates the ar t of the picture book from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 28 at the Main Library, 100 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale. Featured guest speakers are award-winning illustrator Javaka Steptoe, the winner of the 2017 Caldecott Medal and the 2017 Coretta Scott King illustrator award, and author, consultant and children’s literature professor Megan Dowd Lambert.

Everyone from parents and educators to authors and illustrators can learn techniques to promote children’s literature and expand family literacy during this day-long celebration. The event, sponsored in part by the Broward Public Library Foundation, begins with a morning session for pre-registered educators, librarians and parents with discussions led by Steptoe and Lambert from 9 a.m. to noon.

Family-friendly activities for all ages will follow from 1 to 4:30 p.m. including interactive workshops, STEAM demonstrations, a visual literacy scavenger hunt, collage art and more.

Children’s BookFest and the 2018 Kickoff to Summer Learning at Broward County Libraries

Join over 3,000 children and parents for Children’s BookFest on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Northwest Regional Library, 3151 N University Dr., in Coral Springs from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This county-wide celebration of children’s literature features free book giveaways, storybook characters, arts and crafts and storytellers. The festival is funded through the Broward Public Library Foundation, in partnership with the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Children’s Services Council of Broward County and Broward Family Life Magazine.

The Children’s BookFest will focus on South Florida’s culturally diverse populations and will serve as the kick-off for Broward County Library’s Summer Learning Program, themed Libraries Rock! This year, the Broward Public Library Foundation has teamed up with the Florida Panthers. Don’t miss your chance to meet Stanley himself and win door prizes at the festival.

Robyn Vines Joins BPLF Board The Broward Public Library Foundation welcomes Robyn L. Vines to its Board of Directors. She was elected to the Board in March. Vines is a shareholder in GrayRobinson’s Fort Lauderdale law office. Committed to improving the practice of

Family Law, she chairs the Florida Supreme Court Family Law Forms Advisory work group. She has also served on the board of governors for the Young Lawyers Division of The Florida Bar. A graduate of Leadership Broward Class XXIX, Vines is a member of the Winterfest, Inc. Executive Board, the Fort Lauderdale Women’s Executive Club and the Purdue Alumni Association. From 1987-1998, she served in the Florida and Indiana National Guard as a logistician, personnel officer and company commander.

Board Member in the NewsBPLF Chair Marty Shuham of Shuham & Shuham was elected President-Elect of the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce for 2018. He currently serves as Treasurer of the Chamber and as a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of

Directors. He also serves as Chair of the Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee. We are thrilled to have Marty leading our Board of Directors and thank him for his work in Hollywood.

Book with Brunch Author Focuses on Health, Fitness

Author, speaker and wellness coach Laurie A. Watkins spoke at the Broward Public Library Foundation’s most recent Book with Brunch about practical and proven tools she designed with health and wellness experts on finding the path to a healthy lifestyle in a 24/7 world. On March 8 at ArtServe in Fort Lauderdale, guests enjoyed a light brunch buffet

catered by Peacock’s Pantry while listening to Laurie, followed by a lively Q&A and signing of her book, Go from Stressed to Strong: Health and Fitness Advice from High Achievers.
