OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES – Have you ever wondered what 94 children ages five and under on a big stage would look like – wonder no more. Above, children from the Yorkton Nursery School Co-operative read the Christmas story and sing traditional Christmas carols followed by a gathering filled with sweet treats and a visit from Santa. Students were helped out by teachers Lana Haider, Karly Wagner, and Kelly Boychuk. – Submitted by Lana Haider. Sunrise Health Region excels in national study According to a recent study released by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), the Sunrise Health Region has among the lowest Hospital Standardized Mortality Ra- tio (HSMR) rates in the country. The report says hospitals in this health region have consistently per- formed better than the national aver- age for the past six years. The report, released December 13, 2012, studies the number of deaths in hospitals across Canada. Data was collected for all hospitals in the Sunrise Health Region. CIHI stan- dardized the data it collects adjust- ing for several factors that may affect in-hospital death rates such as age, sex, diagnoses and admission status. A mortality ratio of 100 is the Ca- nadian average. A ratio of less than 100 indicates results better than the national average. The HSMR of 74 for Sunrise Health Region was among the lowest in the country. “Patient safety is our priority. The HSMR is a high level patient safety measure that helps us to monitor the effectiveness of safety improve- ments,” says Suann Laurent, Presi- dent and Chief Executive Ofcer for Sunrise Health Region. Initiatives such as the Surgical Safety Checklist, medication rec- onciliation, and good hand hygiene practices are examples of safety im- provement initiatives being imple- mented. “Being a top performer is an indi- cation that we are on the right path and further drives our determination to eliminate defects in our health sys- tem.” adds Laurent. Only hospitals and health regions with 2,500 or more discharges are published in the public report. Sun- rise Health Region was one of three Saskatchewan health regions in the report. Also included were the Re- gina Qu’Appelle Health Region and Saskatoon Health Region with a ra- tio of 93. Sunrise Health Region excels in national study According to a recent study released by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), the Sunrise Health Region has among the lowest Hospital Standardized Mortality Ra-tio (HSMR) rates in the country. The report says hospitals in this health region have consistently per-formed better than the national aver-age for the past six years. The report, released December 13, 2012, studies the number of deaths in hospitals across Canada. Data

was collected for all hospitals in the Sunrise Health Region. The year 2012 will go down in the history books as another very good year for the Saskatchewan economy says the prov-ince’s economy minister. Record levels of popula-tion, employment and investment were reached in 2012. “Saskatchewan’s econ-omy was the envy of nearly every Canadian province in 2012 with more jobs, more people to fi ll those jobs and record levels of new investment coming into the prov-ince,” Economy Minister Bill Boyd states. “This government’s growth agenda will capi-talize on our strengths – our people, our resources and our innovation and ensure that Saskatch-ewan continues to be an economic leader in Cana-da through 2013 and be-yond.” Saskatchewan’s popu-lation reached an all-time record of 1,086,564 after the third quarter of 2012. This refl ected an October 1, 2011 to October 1, 2012 growth rate of 2.16 per cent, the second highest percent-age increase among the provinces. On a year over year basis, this was also the largest increase on record. Saskatchewan is ranked in the top two provinces in the follow-ing areas: • Non-residential in-vestment was up $1.3 billion in the fi rst three quarters of 2012 com-pared with the same pe-riod last year, an increase of 20.7 per cent (high-est percentage increase among the provinces); • Urban housing starts were up 35.4 per cent in the fi rst 11 months of 2012 over the same peri-od last year (highest per-centage increase among the provinces); • International exports totalled $26.5 billion in the fi rst 10 months of 2012, a 10.3 per cent increase over the same period last year (second highest percentage in-crease among the prov-inces); • Manufacturing ship-ments were $11.9 billion in the fi rst 10 months of 2012, a 13.1 per cent increase over the same period last year (second highest percentage in-crease among the prov-inces); • Retail sales were $14.25 billion in the fi rst 10 months of 2012, a 7.5 per cent increase over the same period last year (second highest percent-

age increase among the provinces); • Saskatchewan had the second lowest unem-ployment rate among the provinces (seasonally un-adjusted) in the fi rst 11 months of 2012 at 4.8 per cent; • Employment growth was up 10,800 in the fi rst 11 months of 2012 over the same period last year, up 2.1 per cent (tied for the second highest in-crease among the prov-inces); • Average weekly earn-ings (seasonally adjust-ed) were $917.98 in the fi rst 10 months of 2012, a rise of 4.9 per cent over the same period last year (second highest increase among the provinces); and, • Real wage growth (adjusted for infl ation) was up 3.1 per cent in the fi rst 10 months of 2012 over the same period last year (second highest in-crease among the prov-

inces). According to an aver-age of seven major fore-casters, Saskatchewan is expected to have the sec-ond best economy in 2013 with a growth rate of 2.9 per cent. The Conference Board of Canada predicts Saskatchewan will have top ranking among the provinces with a growth rate of 3.4 per cent. RBC, Scotiabank, CIBC and TD have forecast the province to have the sec-ond highest growth rate in the nation. “Although some of the fi nal data for 2012 has yet to come in, 2013 looks to be very promising for the Saskatchewan economy with solid growth expect-ed,” Boyd adds. “Support-ed by strong agriculture and resource sectors, our economy is on a steady course to boost exports, which in turn creates jobs and a multitude of business and investment opportunities.”

FROM US TO YOU – St. Michael’s School’s Grade 2 French class Santas wish you a Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year!

Ed, my neighbor next door, claims we should refuse to change years. “Why not just stick with the same year each January 1st? There is no reason we couldn’t do the same year over and over,” Ed insists. Ed has a dis-like for the number 13, so he really isn’t looking for-ward to 2013. He also claims it would be good for time to stand still. We need to get stuck on the same year so everyone can get caught up on their lives. I have found through the years that sometimes I cannot even think of any comments for Ed’s ideas. All I could tell Ed was that we needed to move on to 2013 because it will usher in my second retirement. Of course, Ed had to scoff at me for say-ing that I was “retiring” from Walmart. According to Ed, my working part time there was just a paid hobby, not really work. All I could say to Ed was that it sure seemed like work to me. I tried to change the sub-ject by asking Ed if their annual New Year’s party was happening this year with his no-fail predic-tions for the coming year. “Of course it will hap-pen,” Ed informed me. “People need to have an idea of what is going to happen in 2013. They

count on me to prepare them,” Ed told me with pride. Getting prepared for the New Year coming upon us makes me think of when I was driving cars that were not auto-matic. Changing gears using a clutch could at times be less than smooth. It took me a while to get used to stop-ping and starting on the road up the mountain in Hamilton, Ontario in bumper-to-bumper traf-fic. When shifting gears in life, I am sometimes pret-ty anxious because I am adjusting to what is new. Being completely retired will be a big adjustment for me. Retired folks have to be self-disciplined, as otherwise life can become pretty static. Will I be up to keeping myself active and productive, or will I dry up like cut grass? Even the dream of retire-ment can come with a lumpy pillow. Shifting into full-time retirement could be less than smooth

in 2013 for me. I can almost hear some gears grinding already Thankfully, God does not let us know the future. One day at a time is all we need to know and usually it is more than enough for us to deal with. The Bible says it this way: “Therefore do not worry about tomor-row, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Our days come with no guarantee of limitless joy or even productive activ-ity. We do not know what the future holds, but we do know God holds the future. May God’s prom-ise spoken to his people in captivity be ours – “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” God has a plan for you and a plan for me. His love and goodness have set us free to be just exactly who He wants us to be.
