Hello everyone,

I’ve just been to sing with the Underriver Ladies choir for a couple of hours this morning and it was so much fun. I’m not sure I’ve got the best voice and I don’t read music but the joy of hearing all of us singing together was really special. It was a morning that invigorated me, made me smile, filled my heart with joy and sense of achieving something. Our singing teacher Dani and her enthusiasm and humour just make you feel that everything is possible.

I’ve also been watching a bit of the Glastonbury festival over the last few days and whilst not everything there is my cup of tea, some of it definitely is. I found the footage of the crowds all singing together hands raised, laughing in the sunshine and just generally having a good time really compelling. It also gave my daughter and I chance to discus various issues together as we watched Stormzy, Billie Eilish, The Killers, The Cure, oh yes and of course Kylie!

At both Churches in the Benefice we’ve had concerts, be it Jazz or the upcoming more classical concert on the 21st Sept. Times where I can see that people really lose themselves in the music and there’s definitely a joy on people’s faces.

Now, we all have different tastes in music, be it Stormzy (!), Robert Reid Jazz, classical or Kylie and that makes life varied, interesting, educational and at times provoking.

Worship in Church is a time to praise God, to focus our thoughts and prayers on our living God who delights in our praises. Of course, worship is not only the singing or the music, everything we do is worship and that’s not just restricted to a Sunday. Very often the words of an old hymn will take me out of myself and focus on God and then I reflect back on something that’s pertinent for me. I always pray in the vestry before each service and often recently I’ve found myself praying the words, “let us leave here changed people because we’ve met with the Living God”.

I left the choir this morning in a totally different frame of mind to how I’d started, a new perspective, a lighter spirit.

There’s a great story in the Old Testament of King David, losing himself in the sung worship (yes tambourines were involved) and just praising God. Albeit David was the poster boy of the time and his

FROM THE VICAR

Kingship was like no other, but he had his troubles, he disobeyed God big time and he lost his way a number of times. Yet in that moment of worship he was changed, he was David that God created him to be. Joyful, full of honour, freedom and peace.

Maybe that’s why we sing in Church as one form of worship, maybe that’s why people flock to Glastonbury and other festivals because at moments like that they truly feel like themselves and maybe that’s why I loved this morning so much too at the Underriver Ladies Choir.

Much love to you all,

Serena x

Porchlight

St Margaret’s PCC has chosen Porchlight to be its charity of the year. Porch-light provides support for homeless people and those sleeping rough in Kent. It arranges temporary accommodation and rehabilitates and improves people’s lives so that they can return to society.

Porchlight has a helpline which is always open. There are 12 advisers round Kent and their outreach saves many lives. The helpline receives 15,000 calls a year.

In Kent the number of homeless has increased from 148 five years ago to 834 last year. The reasons for people being homeless are many. Ill mental health, learning difficulties, family break down, financial problems, loss of employment are some of them.

Porchlight provides accommodation and a pathway to getting work. It has 150 bedrooms and is hoping to provide more. Porchlight is supported by many churches and individuals. I hope you will help us give generously.

Jennifer Fair

We invite all to our next joint family service at St Margaret’s.

At our last joint service, someone from SSL suggested we bring our own cups and do a ‘Waitrose’ ! We would like to try this at SMU but of course shall still have cups available if you should forget yours and for newcomers!

Looking forward to welcoming you on September 1st.

New Term details.

There is a successful Ladies Choir in Underriver village hall every Monday morning at 9.30am. Dani is an amazing teacher with a great relaxed style and it’s so much fun! We now have nearly 20 regular attendees and it’s become a fixture on the Underriver calendar. The next term starts on Monday 9th Sep-tember and will run for 6 weeks on the following dates:-

Monday 9th September

Monday 16th September

Monday 23rd September

Monday 30th September

Monday 7th October

Monday 14th October

The sessions will run for 1 hr 20 mins followed by tea and coffee and will be £10 per week payable in advance by cheque or on line as a 6 week block. We will be starting new songs for each 6 week session so you won’t feel that you are behind if you have not been before.

You do not have to be able to read music to join in as Dani helps us learn by providing training tracks via e mail and you just click on them to listen to them at home its quite simple and in the lessons we learn by rote although you are welcome to have the music if that’s how you prefer to sing!

The songs will be from a huge range of styles and genres so there should be something for everyone the sessions are informal and great fun.

Many of the ladies have never sang in a choir before, It’s incredibly uplifting to hear us all together once we have learnt a song - so why not give it a try?

Please pass this on to anyone in the village or beyond that you think might like to come along as everyone is welcome. I really hope that you will be able to join us.

You can contact me by e mail - [email protected] or phone me on 01732 833943 for more information.

UNDERRIVER BOOK CLUB

Our book for July was Gloucester Crescent: me, my Dad and other grown-ups by William Miller.

William is the second son of Jona-than Miller, and this is his often hilari-ous and moving account of growing up in the brilliant, idealistic and intellectu-al circle of grown-ups inhabiting most of Gloucester Crescent (near Primrose Hill in North London) at the end of the last century and the beginning of this. Many of them had written about, or figured in, aspects of life in the Cres-cent – notably Alan Bennett in The La-dy in the Van, Claire Tomalin’s autobi-ography A life of my own, Mark Boxer’s cartoons and Nina Stibbe’s nanny’s eye view, in Love, Nina, of the literary Wil-mers and their friends.

William’s main ally in this venture is his marvellously sane doctor-mother, Rachel, to whom he gives thanks “for realising that this was a story I wanted to tell and it needed to be written as I experience it and not as others had.” This explains the slight ‘Adrian Mole’ tone of the early chapters which is very effective.

The mercurial, exasperating Jona-than Miller is the most impossible Dad (and husband!) – yet the undercurrent throughout is of deep affection. Wil-liam struggles to find his own identity through back garden over-the-wall friendships, scary bullying at

the“progressive” Pim-lico Comprehensive School, exam failure, a brief haven at Bedales School and confused adolescence. There are unforgettable mo-ments on the way, including a tease that the lady in the van is really William’s grandmother and a delightful Princess Margaret episode when William is briefly her daughter Sarah’s boyfriend.

William is now a successful televi-sion producer and media executive with his own family, who is amazed to find himself living just three doors away from his mum and dad in the Crescent ( in a house that had be-longed to Ursula Vaughan Williams.)!

Everyone had found something to savour in their reading of it, and it evoked many enjoyable memories of the ‘60’s and ‘70’s - going to the first performance in London of Beyond the Fringe (with Princess Margaret in the audience!), watching That was the week that was, The Goodies and Monty Python – and more. We all agreed that is would be a good sum-mer read. It has come out in paper-back, and is on Kindle.

UNDERRIVER HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

The Autumn Show Saturday 7th September

This is a new venture because so many people were away in July for the Summer Show. The schedule for the classes is with this magazine and we hope as many families as possible will enter one or two this year especially if you haven’t done it before.

Tea and Jazz

In the afternoon the Jazz band comes and plays for an hour or two, so do come and enjoy looking at all the exhibits, prize winning and deliciously per-fumed, have a cup of tea and fantastic cakes (it is Underriver!) The Summer Fete used to be a big Underriver occasion and it would be nice if we to get the families together at the start of the Autumn Term instead this year.

We are very honoured that HRH Princess Maria of Romania has recently become Patron of the Charity 'Children in Distress/ Copii in Dificultate'.

The Princess is coming to England for a few days in September to promote the work of the Charity and her trip will include a Recep-tion at the Romanian Embassy and a Service of Thanksgiving, to be held on Saturday 21st September in the Romanian Orthodox part of St. Dunstan's in the West Church, in Fleet Street, to celebrate the thirtieth year of the charity.

The Princess has also asked to meet Supporters of CID, and to visit schools that have supported Children in Distress in order to meet and thank the pupils and teachers who have done so much for the ‘Love in a Box’ Shoebox Campaign.

We are delighted that Princess Maria is coming to visit St. Lawrence’s Church of Eng-land Primary School and has also accepted our invitation to St. Lawrence Church for a buffet lunch with Parishioners from our Benefice. Valentina Zaharia, CEO of Children in Distress in Romania and the UK will accompany her. Thank you to Serena and Alison Saunders for welcoming them (and for all those shoeboxes!)

So many of you have supported us in different ways-the Dragon Boat Race, filling shoeboxes with presents for the’ Love in a Box’ Campaign at Christmas, knitting, spon-soring us on the West Highland Way, helping at or supporting our fundraising ‘Cake and Coffee’ and ‘Soup and Pudding’ Events to mention a few.

We do hope you will join us to welcome and meet Her Royal Highness and Valenti-na ,to hear more about the work of the Charity and how you have or can help make life happier for the children in its care, to enjoy lunch with us and to make this a very Spe-cial Occasion. You are all welcome!

On Thursday 1st August (2.30 pm) at Hever Castle’s out-

door theatre (01732 866114), Immersion Theatre will present

Alice in Wonderland, a fantastical larger-than-life musical

brimming with nonsensical fun and excitement for the entire fam-

ily. Follow Alice and the White Rabbit as they set off on a colour-

ful, topsy-turvy adventure and meet a host of outlandish characters.

On Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd August (8 pm) at Hever’s outdoor theatre (01732

866114), Opera Brava will perform Rossini’s The Barber of Seville (Friday) and Ver-

di’s La Traviata (Saturday). These operas will be sung in English by professional singers

(several of who are from the English National Theatre and the Royal Opera House).

There will be a live orchestra.

On Thursday 8th August (8 pm) at Hever’s outdoor theatre (01732 866114), you

can see a Hammer‑Horror inspired production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s melodramatic

spoof Ruddigore. To avoid inheriting the family curse, the baronet of Ruddigore has to

commit a daily crime or else die an agonising death. Expect mad damsels, moustachioed

villains and a gallery of deceased ancestors.

On Friday 9th and Saturday 10th August at Sevenoaks’ Stag Theatre (01732

450175), Bullfrog Productions will present Legally Blonde, billed as an action-packed

musical with memorable songs and dynamic dances. The show follows the transfor-

mation of Ellie Woods as she tackles stereotypes, snobbery and scandal in pursuit of

her dreams. If you see this preview in time, you may be able to enrol in the cast: re-

hearsals run from Monday 29th July to Thursday 8th August.

Also on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th August at Tunbridge Wells’ Trinity Arts

Theatre (01892 678678), Trinity Youth Theatre will perform the School Edition of

Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd. Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber, returns

to 19th Century London seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him

and ravaged his young wife. The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs Lovett, a resource-

ful proprietress of a failing pie shop, above which he opens a new barber practice …

On Friday 16th August (2 pm and 8 pm) and Saturday 17th August (8 pm) at Hever’s

outdoor theatre (01732 866114), you can see Alan Ayckbourn’s hilarious and poign-

ant comedy Round and Round the Garden. The lecherous Norman is simultaneous-

ly attempting to seduce his sister-in-law Annie, charm his brother’s wife Sarah and still

keep his own wife Ruth happy.
