N•E•W•S T01DA Y SADLER'S WELLS FILLY TOPS TATTERSALLS FRIDAY A weanling filly by Sadler's Wells out of Se- quel (Ire) (Law Society) brought a final bid of $282,971 to top Friday's session of weanlings at the Tattersalls December Sales in Newmarket, England. Consigned by Raffin Stud, the full sister to MSW Family Tradition (Ire), second top-weighted two·-year-old filly in Ireland in 1996, was purchased by C. Gordon-Watson Bloodstock. A colt by Theatrical (Ire) out of Moss (Woodman), also from the Raffin Stud consignment, brought the highest bid during Thursday's Foals session. The half-brother to MG1 SW Committed (Haglley), European champion sprinter in 1 984 and champion older mare in Ireland in 1985, as well as stakes winners Christiana Hundred (Hagley) and Wooing Door Johnny), was pur- chased for $145,023 by 1=>eter Doyle Bloodstock. Thurs- day's session saw a total of 205 lots sell for $4, 701,566, an average of $22,933. The gross was down 11 .4 percent from last year's corresponding ses- sion when 207 weanlings brought $5,310,839, while the average dropped 1 O.El percent from a figure of $25,655 last year. The numbers rebounded Friday, with 195 lots bringing $9,339, 111, up 5.8 percent from the corresponding session in 'I 996 when 203 foals sold for $8,822,511. Friday's average of $47,893 was up 10.2 percent over the '96 average of $43,459. The final weanling session of the Tattersalls December Sales will be held today. The five-day Mares sale begins December 1 and runs through December 5. (Friday's Top 5, p4) LONESOME GLORY FOR KEMPTON? The 1997 Colonial Cup hero Lonescime Glory (Transworld), three-time champion steeiplechaser, has been entered in one of Britain's most pre:;;tigious races, the G1 Pertemps King George VI 'Chase at Kempton's Boxing Day meet- ing on December 26. Lonesome Glory is the first Ameri- can-trained horse to be entered for the race. Trainer Bruce Miller said, "We have entered him in the King George because he has not much more to do in this country. We want to wi111 the Cheltenham Gold Cup, but he needs more experience over British fences and Kemp- ton would be ideal. No definite decisions about coming to Britain have been made yet. He has won races in Britain shortly after shipping so it would be no disadvan- tage to arrive close to Boxing Day." Sue Ellen, managing director of United Racecourses, said, "The King George has had French-trained and Irish-trained winners. It would be wonderful to see Lonesome Glory represent the United States in this year's renewal on Boxing Day." Fall Highweight H. cont. The winner of the G 11 A Phenomenon H. at Saratoga

this summer, Royal Haven had run just twice since, finishing third in both the Gii Forego H. at Saratoga and the Gii Forest Hills H. at Belmont. Coming off a fiveweek layoff after that last start, the third choice rated off the pace, made a five-wide move on the turn to take the lead straightening for lhome and never looked back, giving trainer Gasper Mosc:hera optimism for the Aqueduct meeting. "This seems; like a preview of what to expect over the winter," said his trainer. "He's a good horse and he did it real easy out there."

The highweight sat just off the early pace, assumed command entering the stretch and increased her advantage through the lane. Stablemate Omi closed for second to give trainer Bill Mott the top two spots. "You get nervous when they are one-two coming into the stretch," said Ralph Nicks, Mott's assistant. "The race set up well for (Feasibility Study) today. She drew outside where she could stalk, unlike the Spinster where she had to be pressed the whole way. She'll now go to Florida and we'll evaluate from there." Nicks added that the fiveyear-old mare would likely race in January and February, and then a decision would be made on whether to continue her six-year-old campaign or retire her to the breeding shed.

Local News: Churchill Downs A technical problem Wednesday resulted in $775 in

wagers being placed on Churchill Downs' seventh race at a New York State off-track betting outlet for six full minutes after the race had started. The trouble was caused by a computer tote failure at the New York Racing Association, the hub from which the New York OTB wagers are transferred into the mutuel pools at Churchill. Due to the computer problem, the tote machines at New York Western Regional OTB outlets were not locked at post time for Churchill's seventh race, 4:03 p.m. Wednesday, and patrons continued to bet on the race until 4:09 p.m. A total of $412 of the wagers were on winning tickets. Because the error was not discovered until the wagers had been included in the commingled mutuel pools and the race had been declared official, there was an underpayment of $51,900 to on-track and simulcast bettors who held legal winning tickets. However, those bets made after the race had begun were not honored at Western Regional OTB. In accordance with the Administrative Regulations of the Kentucky Rules of Racing, the underpayment will be placed into wagering pools on today's seventh race at Churchill and distributed to winning bettors.

Jockey Larry Melancon made his comeback a winning one Wednesday, riding two-year-old Bubbly Lady (Chief's Crown) to victory in the sixth race at Churchill in his first mount since suffering multiple injuries in a spill at Ellis Park August 28. "It was a bad accident, but God brought me through it and it was a quick recovery," said the 42-year-old reinsman. "Getting back to riding was my goal. Winning a race is icing on the cake."

GSW Phantom On Tour (Tour d'Or), first or second in eight of nine career starts and runner-up in this year's Gii Arkansas Derby, worked five furlongs in 1 :03 1/5 under jockey Larry Melancon Thursday. "He's accomplished everything we've asked him to do at this point and he's probably a little further along than I anticipated him being at this time," said trainer Lynn Whiting of the three-year-old, who underwent surgery to remove a chip from his ankle after finishing sixth in the Kentucky Derby. "Maybe he'll find himself in the entries in New Orleans one day at the end of December."

GI Moet Champagne S. runner-up Lil's Lad (Pine Bluff) breezed three furlongs in :37 2/5 Thursday.

Facing the boys as the 2-1 choice with a switch to the turf here, the bay sped away from the gate to take a clear lead early and had enough left to hold off the late charge of Latin Dancer for the victory. "Turning for home, she was just cruising," said jockey Kent Desormeaux. "She had her head up in the air and was looking around as if to say, 'Where did they all go?' I think she would have been tough in the Breeders' Cup Sprint, but that's a pill you have to swallow. You take the good with the bad and keep on going. We've got some good, so let's smile." The favorite pressed the pace and took the lead in the stretch, but couldn't quite hang on, finishing fourth. GI Oak Leaf S. winner VIVID ANGEL (Septieme Ciel), making her turf debut, showed brief speed but stopped and ended up eiglhth. "She wasn't handling the turf at all," said jockey Eddie Delahoussaye.
