taxes the churches ruins and other monuments like the Colosseum in Rome are falling into

disrepair Six million people a y ear v isit the Colosseum and Della Valle has handed ov er a

whopping $35 million to restore the structure

So why is Della Valle spending so much of his own money to restore the structure ldquoWhy not

Well I am Italian I am v ery proud to be I talianrdquo Della Valle told Safer ldquoAnd there is a v ery

famous Kennedy speech no Is the moment that what is possible for us to do for our country we

need to do nowrdquo Like Della Vallersquos T odrsquos shoes that hav e made him his fortune which are

handmade stitch by stitch the Colosseum will be restored inch by inch with an estimated

completion time of three y ears Sy lv ia Fendi whose grandfather started the family rsquos namesake

powerhouse I talian brand 90 y ears ago is donating $3 million to the restoration of the T rev i

v ery important for us T his country gav e us a lot And so it rsquos nice at a point to giv e back

somethingrdquo Fendi told Safer Another I talian titan pouring his money into the famous 423- y ear-

old Rialto Bridge in Venice is Rosso Dieselrsquos billionaire founder and chairman of the OT B Group

which owns labels like Marni Viktor amp Rolf and Maison Martin Margiela Rosso is spending $7

million on the restoration project

But ev en with I taly rsquos fashion giants forking ov er so much money the process still remains

difficult I t took three y ears of sifting through bureaucratic nonsense before Della Vallersquos

enormous gift could ev en be put to use ldquoT he bureaucracy will hav e to change in order to actually

make it possible for someone to come and say lsquoHere do y ou want $25 millionrsquo Without the

bureaucracy say ing lsquoWell I donrsquot know I rsquoll hav e to think about it rsquordquo professor Kimberly Bowes

director of the American Academy in Rome told Safer Meanwhile Della Valle remains charmingly

optimistic ldquoI think it rsquos possible now to open a new way T he old point of v iew was without any

sense I hav e hope in the new point of v iew I push for the new point of v iewrdquo Brav o
