News & Update December 2017 MFPA Logging School Delivers! The MFPA Logging School has launched and landed its first class!! Over two years ago MFPA and MDC began developing a comprehensive curriculum for the logging school and then we began looking for the proper venue to host the school. We ultimately decided on The Camp at Lake Wappapello and that ended up being a great deci- sion. The Camp ownership and staff are committed to the logging school and they have become a true partner for our new venture. After two years of planning, our commitment to the industry has finally been realized. On Friday Dec 8, 2017 two students proudly accepted their certificates upon successful completion of the inten- sive 10 week hands on training in safety, felling, skidding, and bucking timber as well as first aid, Dendrology, Sil- viculture, Forestry Best Management Practices, communication and personal/business finance. The two students who hailed from Gallatin MO and Montreal, Quebec Canada will soon be working on Missouri logging crews ap- plying their newly acquired knowledge harvesting timber as competent loggers. The Logging School became a reality because of the commitment that MFPA members had to the concept. Throughout the 10 week session we constantly asked for help and assistance from the industry. Logging and industry members graciously allowed the students to visit their operations to better understand “real world” ap- plications of what they were learning at school. Associate members provided equipment so that students could learn to operate logging equipment and gain actual field experience during their 10 week tenure. MDC provided funding to help launch the school but also allowed us to harvest trees on University Forest Conservation Area, which was a very short drive from The Camp. The support and assistance that the school received was simply outstanding and we sincerely appreciate the help. PLEASE HELP RECRUIT STUDENTS FOR THE 2018 SESSION! Our first logging school session in 2018 will begin on or about June 1 to hopefully take advantage of recruiting recent high school graduates. We will be diligently advertising the school in coming months trying to reach our goal of having 10 students enroll in the program. If you haven’t seen them already we would encourage you to view the following videos that were prepared for advertising the school: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXkTHiJiKIM; https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=eeFRH-08H9I. The online application is available at https://www.moforest.org/logging-school/index.php. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Representative Todd Richardson, a Republican, represents part of Butler County, including the City of Poplar Bluff (District 154), in the Missouri House of Representatives. He was elected to his first two-year term in November 2010 and reelected in November of 2012 and 2014.

In May 2015, Todd was selected by his peers to serve as the Speaker of the Missouri House of Representatives

Richardson is a fifth generation Missourian, born and raised in Southeast Missouri. He is a product of the Poplar Bluff public school system and is a 1995 graduate of Poplar Bluff High School.

Richardson attended college at the University of Memphis and graduated with a degree in Political Communication. While at the University of Mem-phis, he served as the University’s primary liaison for state level government relations. Todd worked on behalf of the University on a variety of projects including efforts to streamline government oversight, give the University more autonomy, and expand educational opportunities in the Memphis area.

Todd left that position in 2004 and enrolled at the University of Memphis, Cecil C. Humphrey’s School of Law. Todd graduated from law school in 2007 with honors, ranked number three in his graduating class. As a law student, Todd led the University to the finals of the National Moot Court competition and was recognized for outstanding advocacy and trial skills. Todd was selected by his peers to give the commencement address at his 2007 gradua-tion.

In addition to his legislative duties, Rep. Richardson is a practicing attorney in Poplar Bluff. Before being elected to the legislature he served as an adjunct instructor at Three Rivers College where he taught business law and national and state government classes.

Rep. Richardson is a member and serves on the board of the First Christian Church.

Born December 26, 1976 in Cape Girardeau, Rep. Richardson currently lives in Poplar Bluff with his wife, Amber. They have a son, Sawyer, and a daughter, Briley.

I thought about looking back in the files, blowing off the dust, and re-run this column from a year ago, and the year before that…but, instead I thought along with reminding you of the need for Continuing Education, I thought I would remind you of the importance of PTH certification.Missouri’s Professional Timber Harvester training is widely acknowledged as the premier timber harvesting training. PTH is affiliated with the national Safety and Woods Workers program. Because participants spend time in the classroom, and more time in the woods improving skills, the 5 day training has grown in popularity. Early in the program, there were complaints about the subject, and the time…now, I just hear occasional grumbling about it taking 5 days out of the woods. I understand, and respect those feelings. While it may seem too lengthy to you, please remember a few things. First, safety and sustain-able harvesting are important, and that in itself takes a lot of time. Second, because a logger DOES take that time, along with increased knowledge they get the added benefit of points in the Department of Conservation’s Best Bid system. Remember, the points shouldn’t be the reason to take the training…but kind of a recognition from MDC for doing it. Lastly, because you attend the voluntary training, it shows legislators how we in the forest products industry are self policing ourselves, and are doing well without additional laws and requirements.Since the training started in 1997, more than a thousand people have been certified. The value of PTH training can best be measured in a variety of ways; improved safety in the woods, increased loggers participating in sales, and a higher number of loggers wanting to become Master Loggers…but that is for another article.Stay certified! Get your Continuing Education training. There are still a lot of ways to get that 1 credit. Attend an industry meeting, watch one of our DVD’s or take part in an online module, take a training that will somehow better the industry. Whatever you choose to do…do it now! Thanks.…and by the way…one last time…don’t forget about your continuing education credit.
