Short news

New UK Class president: Jim Anderson “Boomerang” - Welcome in the club Jim

US Nationals May 10th-14th in Dallas Texas was a nail biting event.

It all started with thunderstorms and tornado warnings.

Practice race canceled for the same reason 15 minutes after start and the first boats reaching for the weather mark.

Last day and the last race gave multiple winner options. Santa Cruz (BRA) then geared up and settled it by winning with 1point ahead of 2nd Bob Harden (USA) who was 1point ahead of 3rd

Chris Snow (USA) who was 1 point ahead of 4th

Jorge Murrieta (MEX)….

BMW to sponsor J/24 European Championship!!

Howth Yacht Club, near Dublin, Ireland, has announced that BMW Ireland is to be the title sponsor of the J/24 European Championship in September when up to forty boats from six countries are expected to compete.

BMW once again title sponsor at major J24 Championship!! Last we had the pleasure working with BMW was at the 2010 Worlds in Malmö Sweden and we are happy to see this relationship continues.

Don´t miss this event!! Help the organizers by sending your entries early!!

The 28th Edition Trofeo Navale Academia in Livorno with its 42 entries from all over the World this year gave great races under somewhat cooler and chillier weather conditions. Those who had decided to leave their warm clothes at home in the hope of warm and nice sunshine weather you could see in the hectic activity in the tents of sail clothing suppliers at the Race Village. But as always a great event for the sport of sailing and also a perfect warm up for the Easter regatta the weekend after. Brazilian Santa Cruz showed from the start what his intention was with the series 2.1.2.1.1.1.1…! Hope to see other new European crews enter next year.

"Pasquavela is one of the historic racing scene in the Italian sport of sailing, born 1988 and since then constantly evolving. This stretch of sea is notoriously one of the most valuable and enjoyable of the Tyrrhenian Sea in terms of weather marine: you can race all year thanks to particular profile of the coast and the shelter offered by the promontory."

New Class Rules:The World Council meeting held in Jacksonville Florida November the 11th 2010 resulted in new rules or changes to existing rules.

Make sure you are updated.www.j 24class.org

J24 World - Championship to be an open event in the future? The 2012 Worlds in Rochester USA will be an open event after a motion made at the 2011 World Council meeting in Jacksonville.

This is said only to be a one timer, a test and an attempt to gather as many boats as possible. What do you sailors think about that?

J24 is one of few classes left today that still have rules that their crews must qualify to attend the World Championships. Shall we give up this rule or do we see a value in our existing system?

I am interested to know what you think and would very much like your opinion for or against with a brief clarification to your view.

Please send me an email with your opinion!

Sun, warmth and Easter bunnies were of course the main theme during Easter Regatta Pasquavela and a lot of happy welcoming between the crews. The fleet of 32 had to maneuver their way among the IRC classes and Comet21 in steady breeze almost all days except for the last where it was very light. The Big Boats had the longer race course and mainly did not interfere too much and the Comet21 were too few to give the J´s any problem. The incredibly amount of eight German boats turned up! It is outstanding that the Germans manage to have so many boats driving the long way to support the Italian Class. Well done!! Hopefully we will be seeing some Italian boats at Kiel week as payback.

Report: UK J24 Spring Cup 2011 – Plymouth 9-10/4

The UK Spring Cup was held on the second weekend in April, in beautiful sunny weather, just outside the breakwater in Plymouth Sound. With sixteen entries the competition promised to be challenging. Saturday saw ideal conditions with sun, a slight swell and 12-15 knots of breeze from the east.

4 one hour races were sufficient to give everyone a good workout – as was evident from the amount of back-stretching going on in the bar of the Royal Western afterwards.

The Sunday proved more challenging for the race committee with absolutely no wind and not a ripple in sight, except for a few splashes from the visiting dolphins. Patience prevailed though, and the sea breeze filled in enough to give us two races in a light, but sail-able wind.

As for the results: The Saturday was dominated by “Stouche – Stuart Jardine” with first place in three out of four races, with “Jeli –Stig McDonald” preventing Stuart from a straight run of bullets.

Sunday also featured Stouche near the front, however, this time she was held off the top spot, first by “Stevie Wassell in Dogs Jorrocks” a Westerly (who we are very happy to see back in the fleet) and in the second race of the day, by “Darren Stansbury in Chaotic”(who we are very pleased to welcome to the fleet).

In the overall results, Stouche’s run of firsts gained them first place overall. Roger Morris in Jolly Roger’s consistency throughout the regatta provided a solid second place. Third place was closely fought out with Djinn - Ben Bennett and Jeli on equal points, with Jeli just beating Djinn on count back.

Thanks must go to the host Club the Royal Western and especially to Race Officer - Mike Pearson and the whole team afloat providing excellent racing.
