2 Lan Su Chinese Garden

Autumn and winter are not only the most inspiring time in the garden, but also the busiest for our team of horticulturists

Winter chill is beginning to set in, with the memory of the inspiring

floral designs of the Ninth Moon Floral Design Showcase alongside hundreds of colorful chrysanthemums displayed in the garden

As the koi begin their slumber, Portland’s winter of endless rain — and perhaps a little snow — gives our plants a time to prepare for the production of new growth, flowers and seed as new root development takes place With this preparation, Lan Su’s horticulturists take the opportunity to maintain the balance of the trees and shrubs by pruning

None are held in more esteem than the pines, Hei Song (Pinus thunbergii) Chih Song (P. densiflora) Riben Wuzhen Song (P. parviflora) Pines are extensively used in penjing and Northwest Coast native Shore Pine (P contorta ssp contorta)

In Asian gardens, a method known as “needling” pines, the removal of many of its pine needles, is necessary to direct new bud growth to specific areas of the tree. During this process the crown of the tree and tips of the branches are pruned back to force the new growth to develop on the lower branches and closer to the trunk

The process of “candling” or pinching the new growth takes place in spring Otherwise, a garden pine meant to be kept at 10 feet tall, would quickly reach 30 or even 50 feet, and lose all of its lower branches,

like a pine found in the forest

As you walk through the garden this winter to enjoy the sweet fragrance of our

plum trees (Mei Hua — Prunus mume) and Wintersweet (Lamei – Chimonanthus praecox), you may also find us carefully pruning magnolias, maples, crabapples and broadleaf evergreens, clipped to harmonize with the garden’s architecture as well as maintaining the balance with the trees canopy and root production

Now is also the time for new plantings to make their way into the garden, such as the cutting made from our famous and beloved “Old Gui” (Osmanthus heterophyllus ‘Variegatus’) planted in the Scholar’s Courtyard and Ditanghua (Kerria japonica) adorning the edge of Lake Zither around the Rock Mountain and waterfall and a grass found in the Northwest, Scouring Rush (Equisetum hyemale)

As winter carries on and the winter camellia blossoms fade, Chinese New Year begins, the koi begin to stir, the trees and shrubs also begin to awaken The time of rest for garden comes to a close when bustling of leaf buds on the trees signal the new cycle of life in the garden

Special thanks to The Firstenburg Foundation for their generosity in donating grant funds for Lan Su’s new truck — a 2017 Ford F-250 The new truck replaces one more than 20 years old that lacked modern safety features and the ability for our facilities and horticulture staff to most efficiently use their time We greatly appreciate their support
