Greetings From The President:

Wow! What a year we have had. I can’t believe the holidays are almost here!!! We have faced many challenges this year and I am so proud of how people in our State have come together, supported, helped, worked and prayed together to overcome the adversities we have faced. We are strong women and we have answered God’s call to serve our brothers and sisters in need.

I have faced many challenges this year and I thank each and every one of you for your support and prayers. It is such an honor to serve as your President. Your willingness to participate, help, and serve makes my job easier and I am so proud of our Columbia District United Methodist Women.

As we near the end of this year, please send in your pledges and help us make our pledge goal this year. It is not too late to make a special donation to help ensure that we are able to continue the programs and missions of the United Methodist Women. We are a powerful group of women, but in order to reach our goals, we need money, money for our programs and money for those that we serve. Let’s share our blessings with those in need.

I know that all of our district officers are excited to serve in 2016. I pray we will all answer God’s call as we do his work and live the mission of the United Methodist Women.

I pray that you will have a safe and blessed Christmas as we celebrate the birth of our Savior! I look forward to a new year filled with God’s love and to new opportunities to share our faith with each other and with those we serve. What a blessing and honor to serve a risen Christ!!

Merry Christmas!

Secretary’s Report

Dear Ladies....Have you ever asked yourself "Why do I need to do this?" or "What is the purpose of the form?" or "Why does it matter?" The reason I am asking these questions is because I need you to complete a form and send it to me. The form is in this issue and if you complete the form and return to me you will receive the district newsletter "Gleanings." When you receive the "Gleanings" you will be informed of all the happenings of the Columbia District United Methodist Women. You will be able to share with your unit a calendar of district events as well as when reports are due. The "Gleanings" will keep you totally informed and without the "Gleanings" you and your units could miss some really exciting events. So.... it's up to you. Return the form and be informed and involved. My best to each of you as well as your loved ones.

News from the Treasurer

Greetings from the Columbia District Treasurer:

Where has this year gone – I cannot believe it is almost December!!! As we end this year, please review your giving and remember all the women, youth and children that the United Methodist Women serve and who are dependent on us for help. What a powerful feeling it is to know that you and I can make a real difference in their lives. Together we can make a difference as we are sisters in Christ!!! We are the hands and feet of Jesus on this earth and your contributions are making a difference. As we enter into the season of the celebration of the birth of Jesus, let’s remember our blessings and respond in a way that pleases Jesus and helps make Him known in this world. The final remittances for 2015 are due on December 15th. I urge you to dig deep to help with the many needs in our world. Let’s share God’s light in a powerful way as we end 2015.

Blessings to all of you!!

Social Action Report

Greetings UM Sister's in Christ,

Please mark your calendars for Legislative Day on February 16, 2016. The theme this year: For

Such a Time as This. The registration fee is $20.00. Rebecca Eleazar is the registrar for this event.

God Whispers to us in our pleasures,

speaks in our conscience,

but shouts in our pain: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.

C.S.Lewis

Including persons with disabilities in our churches and ministries is a topic near and dear to my heart. I was

a teacher and administrator of persons with disabilities for 39 years. I know God placed me in this most

noble of professions to teach, minister, advocate and protect children and young adults with disabilities.

I love the verses from Psalm 139: 13-16

You made my whole being; you formed me in my mother's body.

I praise you because you made me in an amazing and wonderful way.

You saw my bones being formed

as I took shape in my mother's body.

When I was put together there,

You saw my body as it was formed. All the days planned for me

were written in your book

before I was one day old. (Max Lucado Devotional Bible)

Yes, God made each of us in an amazing and wonderful way. The keywords: each of us, including persons

with disabilities.

I have seen the evolving of persons with disabilities in our churches from segregated services to integrated

services, but there is so much more that can be done to include persons with disabilities into our worship

services and church ministries.

Persons with disabilities comprise the largest minority group in the United States, with 20 percent of the

population facing a disability in one form or another. Disability affects people of all backgrounds, nations

and races, of both genders and any age. A disability is caused by an impairment that is congenital, or the

result of disease, injury, or the developmental and aging process.

A person with a disability is not necessarily handicapped except through physical or attitudinal barriers

created by others. Handicaps are barriers that we create for people with disabilities by excluding them

socially and physically.

8 Members of our churches, those with as well as those without disabilities, bring specific and special talents

to the church. At the same time we need one another in order for our gifts to be revealed.

The United Methodist Book of Discipline, which is the book of procedure and legislation of the United

Methodist Church, has a number of statements about disability. Page V Episcopal Greeting “This book of

covenant...makes clear that the United Methodist Church is an inclusive society without regard to ethnic

origin, economic condition, gender, age or disabilities of its constituents.”

www.umdisabilityministries.org For more from the Book of Discipline visit the webpage.

A must read is The Church and People With Disabilities : Awareness, Accessibility, and Advocacy.

This book “intends to build awareness in the church regarding issues around disability, to call the church to provide full

accessibility to services and opportunities, and to promote advocacy for justice for people with disabilities. This book will

encourage you to identify ways that your church can do more to open the floodgates to inclusion and equality.”

www.unitedmethodistwomen.org/disabilities

Another excellent resource is Disability Resource Manual:A Practical Guide for Church and Church

Leaders by Ashley Peterson with help from Christina Swanson.

This is a very helpful tool for ministering to and including persons with disabilities in our churches and

reaching out into our communities to serve those with disabilities.

How is your church ministering to persons with disabilities in your church or community? What is

outreach doing? Is it time for a Bible Study or training in this area within your church? Be an advocate for

those with disabilities.

Psalm 145: 8-9

The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

The Lord is good to all, and His compassion is over all that He has made. (Oxford Annotated Bible New Revised Standard

Version)

Education and Interpretation’s Report We are hopeful each of you has weathered the storms and flooding of early October. If you did not have damage to your property, we know you are thankful and have helped or are helping those in need. If you had damage to your home or other property, we know you have been blessed by those friends, neighbors and other helping hands who have assisted you in your time of need. We understand this is a long recovery process and pray for our friends and neighbors as they get back to life as near as normal as possible. Killingsworth residents were blessed by many helping hands bringing bottled water, rain gear, home cooked meals and other donations. They have one continuing need. Many of the residents lost 2 days of work which means they also lost 2 days pay. Residents must pay rent and board at Killingworth ($15 per day) and lost work means smaller paychecks. If your unit could assist these residents, please send a check payable to Killingsworth and on the for line mark Rent Scholarship. Extra funds will be used to assist new residents as they look for jobs and/or school placements. Killingsworth Gala is November 12. Columbia Bethlehem Center was not damaged. They used the center to collect and distribute bottled water to their community as they were under a boil water advisory for several days. Columbia Bethlehem Center will celebrate its 70 Birthday in the 2016. Stay tuned for information concerning this celebration. Mission u was a great success and we thank all who attended, who sent homemade craft items,, who worked in the craft room or those many who purchased the crafts for self or gifts. The craft room raised several thousand dollars for our missions. Twenty one UMW units in the Columbia District were awarded Mission Today Certificates at the District Annual Meeting. Jenny and I will be attending Officers’ Training at Shandon UMC on Saturday, November 7 and then will be planning for our District Officers’ Training on January 9. We invite all unit E&I chairpersons to attend this January training session. The busy days of Thanksgiving and Christmas as just around the corner and we know you have many plans for the holidays. Remember our local mission units in your prayers, plans and Christmas giving.

A Message from your Reading Resource Manager

Brookland UMC just finished a series study on Earn, Save and Give by James A Harnish

which is based on John Wesley’s instructions of gain all you can, save all you can and give

all you can. Putting this in action with program resources please check all the avenues of

obtaining books to read. You can start an exchange system within your church. Many of the

books can be found in your local library or can be purchased used from half.com. There are

also exchange groups on the internet. Please do not let the price of a book keep you from

reading in the five categories so you can be informed of social actions, learn leading skills,

grow spiritually and educate others.

Remember the youth books can be read for credit and you can pass them on to the youth

in your church and books make great Christmas gifts.

The first resource display for 2016 will be at the officers’ training in January.

I look forward to meeting all of you in the upcoming year and learning tips from you on

your reading programs so I can pass them on to others.

Please contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns.

Also during the district training in November I learned that my title has changed to Reading

Resource Manager.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! And looking forward to seeing

your lights shining brightly!

Membership, Nurture, and Outreach Report

URGENT: Changes in Membership Census Reporting This coming year the national office has made a change in the way districts report their membership. The census form is now on-line—no paper is involved. No more Excel and PDF, faxing, emailing or mailing the form. With this new system, reporting is expected to increase by 90% rather than the 60% in previous years. Totals will go directly to the National Office who will then make reports to each conference. This technology will allow each unit to do its own entries. The link for inputting information is: https://unitedmethodistwomen-public.sharepoint.com/memebership-census-form-2015 The deadline for reporting is February 28, 2016 It is very important that either local MN&O Coordinators or a representative attend the local officer’s training Saturday, January 9, Francis Burns United Methodist Church. In the training session you will learn how to input the membership census information into the new on-line format. I am looking forward to seeing you there. Blessings to all for a wonderful Thanksgiving, a Joyous Christmas and a prosperous New Year!

United Methodist Women Gear Up for Second Annual Day of Giving March 23

United Methodist Women groups around the country are getting ready for the second annual Day of Giving on March 23, 2016, as part of the organization’s five-year 150th anniversary culminating in 2019. The March 23 Day of Giving honors the day in 1869 when a small group of women braved a legendary torrential rain to gather at Tremont Methodist Episcopal Church in Boston, Massachusetts, and organize for mission. The women established the Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society, a predecessor of United Methodist Women, and galvanized women around the country to raise money to send a doctor, Clara Swain, and a teacher, Isabella Thoburn, to India as missionaries to serve the women of that nation. A Day of Giving gifts go to The Legacy Fund, a permanent endowment that will support the mission outreach of future generations of United Methodist Women as they address the needs of women, children and youth of their day. Members in every conference participated in the first Day of Giving in 2015, giving more than $100,000 through online gifts, toll-free calls, smartphone texting and mailed-in checks. “In 2015 our foremothers standing beside us through $1.3 million a year in interest on endowments that they established to support mission with women, children and youth today. That’s a significant legacy,” said Martha S. Knight, treasurer of United Methodist Women. “The Day of Giving is an opportunity for women today to give that kind of legacy to their daughters, and granddaughters and nieces as they make mission happen with women, children and youth of their day. Thanks be to God.” A Day of Giving will be a 24-hour giving festival. Members and friends may give:

Online at www.unitedmethodistwomen.org/legacyfund. By phone: 800-278-7771 (8 am-6pm EST, Monday-Friday). Text Legacy150 to 41444. By check to Office of the Treasurer, United Methodist Women,

475 Riverside Drive, New York, NY 10115. Write “The Legacy Fund” in the memo section.

Conference United Methodist Women Liaisons will be notified of contributions from women in their area — but the amount of the gift will always remain confidential. United Methodist Women members and friends may consider giving $15 or $150 or even $1,500, in recognition of our upcoming 150th anniversary, or $18.69 or $186.90 or even 1,869, in recognition of the year of United Methodist Women’s founding. A Day of Giving gifts are 100 percent tax deductible. Contributors will receive an immediate thank you and a printable tax receipt for 100 percent of their donation. Spread the word! As with our foremothers in 1869, in the 21st century, women still need to organize for mission. Make it happen with a gift to The Legacy Fund on March 23, A Day of Giving.

General Conference Prayer Ministry

United Methodist Women are actively preparing for the church’s 2016 General Conference in Portland, Oregon,

May 10-20. One prayer ministry activity planned is to offer quilted finger prayer labyrinths for delegates and

guests.

We are seeking UMW members who enjoy quilting to assist in making the 2000 needed. The variety of labyrinths

made by women all over the country will bless the recipients and lend to the support and outreach we hope to

extend. Each labyrinth will be tagged with a card identifying it as “handmade with love and prayer by United

Methodist Women.” Please email [email protected] with an estimate of how many you might

be able to make. Further instructions will be emailed back to you. Deadline for submissions of labyrinths is

January 25.

Quilted Hand-Labyrinth Instructions

Materials”

8 1/2” x 8 1/2” quilt top fabric

8 1/2” x 8 1/2” batting

10 1/2” x 10 1/2” quilt backing fabric

Contrasting thread for machine quilting the design

Center quilt top fabric (face up), batting, and quilt backing (face down). Baste or pin together, leaving 1” surplus

of quilt backing around all edges. Enlarge the pattern to fit as shown on example below.

Center the paper design( face up) on right side of the quilt top and pin or baste the paper pattern to the three

layers. Or, you can trace the design on the right side of the top fabric.

Using a straight stitch, sew all four pieces together, following the labyrinth design, being sure to stitch all circuits

of the design. Shortening the stitch length on your machine will help the paper tear away more easily.

Tear away the paper pattern.

Using a satin or tight zig-zag stitch, retrace the entire labyrinth design on the straight stitch pattern.

Finish edges. Begin with corners, folding the backing over itself at 45 degree angles toward the quilt top, covering

raw corners. Stitch each mitered corner in place. Then, fold the backing of each of the four sides in half way, then

fold again, over the raw edge. Finish with a 1/4”-3/8” seam allowance.
