Last week, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital New Brunswick launched a mobile platform to communicate with patients via their smart phones. The platform, developed by HealthGrid and called CareNotify™, enables the medical center to push SMS text notifications to patients before, during and after visits.

Deploying CareNotify™ is a component of RWJBarnabas Health’s consumer strategy to engage with patients in a new way and better manage our relationship with them. As part of a pilot program, the technology will also go live at Monmouth Medical Center this week, and at the New Brunswick Transplant Center and several physician practices in the following weeks.

During the pilot implementation phase, CareNotify™ will deliver HIPAA-secure text messages to most hospital inpatients, as well as to emergency department and observation patients. Patients will receive a message welcoming them to the facility; frequently asked questions; information about their stay and hospital services; education about their condition; information about medications administered; and post-discharge questionnaires to identify opportunities for outreach.

For an example of the technology and the types of text messages patients will receive, visit:

Institute for Prevention’s DART Partners with Local Agencies to Educate Alcohol Outlet Owners—The Institute for Prevention’s DART Prevention Coalition, in partnership with the Brick Police Department, New Jersey Alcoholic Beverage Control, and New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, held a training on June 28 for liquor store and bar owners from Brick Township. Over 80 participants were educated on local and state policies for safely and responsibly serving alcohol to customers. Additionally, the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission updated attendees on the latest in fake identification technology and how to spot a fake form of identification. This information is critical for keeping outlets in compliance with regulations and also preventing the service of alcohol to underage or intoxicated patrons.

The DART Prevention Coalition regularly works with NJ-ABC and NJMVC to hold similar trainings across Ocean County. The mission of the DART Prevention Coalition is to engage Ocean County youth and residents in the process of reducing substance abuse. For more information, contact Michael Capko, Manager, DART Prevention Coalition, at 732-886-4841 or [email protected].

recovery. The procedure is available for patients in need of a single chamber pacemaker. For more information contact Dr. Stephen Rothbart at 973-926-8590.
