Dear Fellow GOS Members,

Seems that summer just started the other day. Hard to believe that so many of our kids are already back in school. So, while they get back into the social and educational aspects of school, it’s only appropriate that we are about to do the same with our annual meeting being just weeks away. We are blessed to have the Cloister as home base and hope you’ll bring your family and join us to renew old friendships, meet colleagues we don’t really know, and learn as we go. Hopefully you’ve already planned to attend. If not, today is the perfect time to alert your staff, that you’ll simply not be at the office September 19-21, 2019.

Our meeting kicks off with a cocktail reception on Thursday evening, the 19th. The academic content are Friday and Saturday mornings. We promise to have you back to your family by lunch those days. Friday afternoon there are sports events if you are so inclined. Friday evening is the dinner-dance at the beachfront. Saturday evening there’s a closing cocktail reception. The Cloister is always a delight and the temperatures should be perfect. You and your family can enjoy one last taste of summer on the beautiful Georgia coast.

So, experience tells us this is quite the formula for relaxation, networking, family, and education. Our academic program has come together nicely with a wide variety of talks and symposia that contain something

for everyone. Our Presidential Guest Speaker, Steve Frick, is chief of pediatric orthopaedics at Stanford University. Many of

you know Steve from his years in Charlotte and Orlando. He promises to update you on the sort of pediatrics orthopaedics that you either see in the office, or your neighborhood… He is truly a leader within AAOS and is going to also talk to us about leadership, ranging from your profession, community, hospital, practice group, church, to your family. Other symposia and topics will include evolving topics in trauma, tumor, hand, sports, joints, shoulder, F&A, and spine.

We will be introducing a new concept for the GOS meeting this year. We will be having an industry sponsored, hands-on, saw bones lab on Saturday morning. Steve Frick and a group of our Georgia pediatric orthopaedic surgeons will hold a one-hour lab course. You will get the opportunity to discuss and perform evolving techniques used in everyday pediatric orthopaedic trauma. The board hopes to expand this concept in the future years with technique-oriented learning that might range from cadaver labs to simulators. What better setting than one in which you have several days of access to the course faculty so you can ask follow-up questions? So, come support our efforts to evolve what we can offer at our annual meeting. Learn something, think about applications in your field, and make suggestions for future years. We need to know how many lab stations to have, so sign up right away.

The Georgia Orthopaedic News

The Georgia Society for Surgery of the Hand will again meet in concert with the GOS annual meeting. They will meet Thursday morning and will feature guest speaker David Ring who will speak on “Rethinking Common Hand Problems.” Friday at GOS, Dr. Ring will speak on “Recovery from Injury.”

I can’t help but to think of Advocacy when I think about the importance of GOS. We need to maintain an active involvement in Advocacy to protect our patients and ensure the best quality and access to health care possible in our state. Over the decades I’ve practiced here in Georgia, I rarely did much of that sort of thing, and I really didn’t know much about what to do. Hopefully you’re like me and do feel an obligation to do your part. Honestly, there are a limited number of meaningful things you can do by yourself. That’s where GOS is your solution. Headed by our Legislative Committee Chair, Jennifer Tucker, GOS had a very active core group who follows all sorts of healthcare policy and political issues that affect not only orthopaedic surgeons, but also our patients and allied providers. Don Bolia is our lobbyist to the GA state legislature and does a superb job not only keeping us abreast of legislative issues, but also building relationships and aiding us on strategy. I am happy to report that we renewed Don’s contract again this year and he will continue supporting what we do in this very important arena. Here is Don’s summary of our situation on the state level:

“GOS has been extremely active in matters before the General Assembly and working with the Governors’ office. The 2019 Session of the General Assembly provided us with a number of legislative victories, but we have so much more to do in 2020 and beyond. The Legislature addressed issues like Medicare Expansion, fixing issues with the PDMP, establishing an Interstate Licensure Compact and CON. We are planning on taking the lead on issues such as Out of Network Billing, scope issues and tort reform.

We must stand ever vigilant on these key issues or face becoming a by-stander with the process. We have done a magnificent job with our Political Action Committee and we are getting even more of our members engaged in the process, but we must do more. Medical Malpractice premiums are on the rise and Georgia was recently ranked as one of the worst states to defend a malpractice claim. Even California has a better environment for physicians defending their cases! The Georgia Trial Lawyers Association is mounting a tremendous effort to push back on any tort changes, and we have to be on the cutting edge of making the necessary changes to protect our profession.

GOS has a proud history in leading on legislative policy and we must continue to do so.”

We are also active at a national level, primarily through AAOS. We have three representatives to the AAOS Board of Councilors: Todd Schmidt, Wendell Duncan, and Leland McCluskey. Not only do we participate, but GA leads. As many of you know, our very own Danny Guy, who spent many years on the AAOS BOC, has been elected to the leadership. He is in now in line to become president of AAOS. Congrats Danny, and we cannot thank you enough for all you do so most of the rest of us can concentrate on practice at home. We are relieved to know that you are one of us, and you’re speaking out at the national level for our profession and patients. GOS also sends an entourage of us to National Orthopaedic Leadership Conference (NOLC) in Washington DC every June to lobby our US Senators and Congressmen/Congresswomen from Georgia. Thanks to Steve Kane, Danny Guy, Todd Schmidt, Wendell Duncan, Jim Barber, Jill Flanagan, Fred Flandry, and Chris Walsh for taking the time away from their practices and family to represent us in DC!

So, back to the question about what can you do? 1- Get involved with GOS. 2- Maintain your membership in GOS and get your partners and colleagues to support us. 3- Attend the annual meeting and get to know every one of the people that I’ve highlighted above. 4- At the very least send a check to the AAOS and GOS PACs. We need your financial support; our adversaries certainly understand that without funding our efforts are weak.

I have great confidence in the health of the Georgia Orthopaedic Society. We have a great board and strong member support. You may recall that we finished second last year in the AAOS “Best State Society” Award, and we are on track to win that recognition soon. Not all state medical societies are thriving in these days of sub-specialization meetings. Like social media, there is a role for all that, but we must never forget the importance of getting together in person. Let your families see that there can be balance between work, education, and family. Take advantage of practicing in a state where the orthopaedic surgeons pride themselves in taking an active role in healthcare policy, education, and advocacy. Thank you all for your support and I look forward to seeing you at the Cloister next month. Make your plans today!
