ANTONOV State Companysincerely welcomes its partnerson the program of the AN-178new transport creation withfinalization of an importantstage construction of this air-craft first prototype and itstransmission to start the certifi-cation tests program!
The AN-178, created on thebasis of wide ANTONOV experi-ence in the field of transport air-craft design in combination withthe newest aviation technolo-gies in the world, is the furtherdevelopment of the AN-148/AN-158 family of regionaljets of different purposes.Development of this familystarted in 2004 with creation ofthe AN-148-100 regional pas-senger jet. Today it consists of 8aircraft that are certified andserially produced. This is a rowof regional passenger aircraft:the AN-148-100A/B/E, AN-148-200, AN-158, aircraft withEnglish cockpit and special-purpose variants: the AN-148-100EA VIP and the AN-148-100EM ambulance. They effec-tively perform tasks of aircarriers of four countries of theworld. During operation the AN-148 achieved record results ofmonth flight time 400 hours,
and of diurnal one 18 hours.Thus, aircraft equally success-fully work in cold and heat, flyunder good and diverse weath-er conditions, base at airfieldswith high quality runways andon ones, located at the altitudeof up to 4.100 m above the sealevel.
Thoroughly studying require-ments of potential customers,ANTONOV Company continuesdeveloping the AN-148/AN-158family. The AN-148-300 withincreased flight range is nowbeing designed. Basing on thisaircraft the whole spectrum ofspecial purpose aircraft isplanned to be developed.
Till present, there wasntramp transport aircraft in thefamily, i.e. the class that is corefor ANTONOV and where theenterprises experience is rec-ognized all over the world. TheAN-178 refers to this class. Withcreating this aircraft ANTONOVmade one more important steptoward realization of the enter-prise development formula: Todevelop what the marketneeds. To develop with mini-mum expenses. To developfamilies of aircraft. To supportand maintain own product with-in its full life time!

Besides, the new aircraftwill be able to be operated at thealtitudes of up to 12,2 km, whilethe AN-12 cruising speed is lim-ited by 8,5 km. One of the mostimportant advantages of theAN-178 over AN-12 is its corre-spondence to modern stan-dards of airworthiness, and toperspective demands takinginto account further aircraftdevelopment.
During the long service timeof the AN-12 and C-160 manycountries worldwide formed anumber of tasks to be perfectlyperformed by transports of suchdimensions. Average cargoweight carried within such oper-ations was 11-13 t (more than70% of transport tasks), andflight range was 2000-3000 km.
Thus, a stable market niche wasformed: for commercial airlift transportation of palletized car-goes and those in bulk, for mili-tary operations logistic sup-port of armed forces.
Main task of medium militarytransport includes logistic sup-port of troops, parachute droop-ing of cargoes at platforms orsmall troop divisions, carrying ofinjured and transportation oflight vehicles, delivery of equip-ment and engines (including,aviation ones). Such aircraft areoften used for delivery, includingto difficult to approach regionsof the world, of cargoes on stan-dard pallets and containers thatdefine optimal lateral sizes anddimensions of this transport.

Decision as for start of theAN-178 program was takenbasing on estimation of theworld market demands. Whilethe AN-178 designing, requestsof both commercial airlines andmilitary aircraft operatorsincluding MoD of Ukraine weretaken in account. As a result,while the aircraft creation areplacement of the AN-12 medi-um four turboprop-poweredtransport at higher technicallevel was defined to be the prior-ity task. All in all more than 1400AN-12 were produced. Theseaircraft are still widespread inCIS countries, Africa and Asia.Besides, the AN-178 is sug-gested as a replacement for theC-160 European twin turbo-prop-powered transport forcustomers focused on theWestern aircraft (214 aircraft

types of the existing packagedfreights (containerized and pal-letized ones), including high-capacity 1C containers (seacontainer) with lateral sizes of2,442,44 m. This makes it anindispensable transport to pro-vide logistic support in commer-cial operation and in armed
forces, as well as operationsunder emergency situations. Asall ANTONOV aircraft, the AN-178 inherits such necessary formilitary transport aircraft quali-ties as basing on poor-equipped, unpaved airfields,autonomy, high reliability andvitality.
As for the airframe and on-board equipment the AN-178 isunified with the AN-148 and AN-158 passenger on 50-60%.436-148 mid-flightengines to be installed on theAN-178 are further develop-ment of a power plant, appliedon the AN-148 and AN-158.This unification, without count-ing decrease of technical risks,allowed reducing total cost ofaircraft development and certifi-cation in several times.

The AN-178 operation sup-port system, all procedures of itstechnical, guarantee and afterguarantee maintenance andover haul are totally unified withexisted aircraft of the family. Thisalso essentially saves costs andreduces cost of aircraft owning.
One more important compo-nent to influence market attrac-tiveness of the new product isexistence of a flight simulator fortraining flight crews. This simu-lator is constructing by improv-ing software of the already exist-ed D level CFS-148/158 for theAN-148 and AN-158, in particu-

lar, taking into account peculiar-ities of piloting and use of ramptransport.
Being a representative ofthe family of regional aircraft,already known worldwide, theAN-178 is also being consid-ered as a basic platform fordesigning of a number of mod-ifications of civil and militarydestinations. This develop-ment is possible not only indirection of development offunctionally different variantsand modifications, but also bythe way of setting units, sys-tems and equipment of alter-native designers on it. This letextend potential aircraft mar-ket and maximally adapt it tounique customers require-ments.
Several foreign aircraftoperators have alreadyexpressed their interest in useof the AN-178. In particular,Memorandum of Understand-ing was signed with MaximusAir LLC (UAE). By this docu-ment the airlines confirmedintence to operate the AN-178transport in civil variant .
The AN-178 is suggestedby the ANTONOV many yearsexperience to be an optimalaircraft in its transport class. Itis created owing to use of highintellectual and technologicalpotential, accumulated whileworking on the AN-148 andAN-158 passenger aircraft.This way became the only rightone in conditions of existingeconomic and technical reali-ties. Today the developmentprogram of the AN-178 newmultipurpose medium trans-port is one of the priority pro-grams of ANTONOV Company.
