Building on a breakthrough BlackWomen Executives Research Initiative in2008, the study chartsthe progress, disappointments andopportunities for blackwomen in businessleadershipWASHINGTON /PRNewswire-

USNewswire/ -- There is a way forblack women executives to in-crease their numbers in businessleadership positions if conscien-tious and intentional steps aretaken to recognize and rewardtheir talents and contributions tobusiness success. A qualitative study conducted by

The Executive Leadership Coun-cil, the preeminent membershiporganization for the developmentof global black leaders, in collabo-ration with Springboard – Partnersin Cross Cultural Leadership, builds on the findings of the

groundbreaking research in theBlack Women Executives (BWE)Research Initiative in 2008. The current findings, published

in the Black Women ExecutivesResearch Initiative Revisited, ex-amine the facilitators and impedi-ments to Black WomenExecutives (BWEs) in reachingthe C-Suite. The new findings show that

while nearly 27 percent of BWEsreceived promotions or advancedtheir positions in the same or a dif-ferent company during the period, more than 50 percent stayed inthe same or similar position, madelateral moves in the same or differ-ent company, or lost groundthrough diminished roles or transi-tioning out of the corporate work-place entirely. All of which took place during a

severe recession, one of the mostdifficult economic periods in mod-ern history."The findings of the Black

Women Executives Research Ini-tiative Revisited present an in-sightful perspective on theperformance and opportunities forblack women executives during a

turbulent and challenging periodfor global business," said RonaldC. Parker, President and CEO ofThe Executive Leadership Coun-cil. "It shows that although morethan a quarter of the respondentsadvanced their careers under dif-ficult circumstances, there is muchmore that needs to be done byblack women and companies torecognize and reward the under-utilized talent of these exceptionalleaders."The interviews with the BWEs

identified four factors critical to un-derstanding why BWEs were bothsuccessful and challenged duringthe 2007 – 2015 timeframe. Four areas of opportunity for

BWEs to influence positive out-comes were revealed: (1) Align-ment of Values; (2) Agility andRepurposement; (3) Sponsor Re-lationships; and, (4) Relationship-building as Politics. These four areas of focus could

create a "roadmap" leading to anincrease in the representation ofBWEs in corporate C-Suites and

on boards.Of the four, the two most impor-

tant areas suggested by the re-search were relationship buildingand agility, and repurposement."The 'runway' is so important,"

said Pamela Carlton, president ofSpringboard - Partners in CrossCultural Leadership and Co-Founder of The Everest Project, which explored contributions ofmulticultural women to businesssuccess. "It is clear that BWEs must start

early in their careers, in the first 5– 7 years, to develop strategicmultiple relationships with the peo-ple who can support and advancetheir careers. The most successful BWEs take

risks and have the opportunity forbig roles early in their careers, al-lowing them to build the long run-way of leadership experiences allexecutives need, build alliancesand create a track record of suc-cess," Carlton added.Details on the findings are avail-

able in an Executive Summary available on TheELC's website at www.elcinfo.com. Two areas of par-ticular interest are "Sponsorship: Who's in Your Wal-let," and "Relationship-building as Politics." Both speak to the importance of BWEs building

and nurturing a network of allies, in addition to spon-sors, in a very competitive environment where every-one performs at a high level, demonstrates agilityand an alignment with the values and mission of theenterprise, and is willing to take risks with so-called"glass cliff" assignments. The study found that BWEs are willing to take on

daunting assignments, but frequently are not recog-nized with promotions for successfully achieving orexceeding favorable outcomes."This is the kind of research that helps us develop

the necessary leadership development programs, strategies, and research that will help BWEs navigatethe corporate landscape and find a path to the top,"said Steven Williams, Ph.D., SHRM-SCP, SPHR,Vice President & Chief Learning Officer of The ELC'sInstitute for Leadership Development & Research."The findings of this research will help guide our ef-forts to develop a pathway to success for BWEs thatwe believe will contribute to more positive results."The findings from the Black Women Executives

Research Initiative Revisited also contributed to alarger study of multicultural women as part of TheEverest Project, which examined the influence of

women's leadership in today's global economy andprovided insight into how the intersection of gender, race, ethnicity, culture, and sexual orientation im-pacts women in the workplace. The study titled Eve of Change: Women Redefin-

ing Corporate America involved participants whoidentified as Black, Hispanic, LGBTQ, Pan Asian orWhite and represented over eighty Fortune 500 cor-porations from a range of different industries and re-gions.It found that female executives are leading trans-

formation and "making their mark by creating the ca-pacity of teams to innovate, a phenomenon that willfuel corporate growth well into the future," Carlton un-derscored.The issue of women in corporate leadership and

on corporate boards has been explored and dis-cussed in a number of studies and blogs, including aGAO Report on women on corporate boards, a studyof women leaders from Capitol Hill to the board roomin Barriers and Bias: The Status of Women in Lead-ership by the American Association of UniversityWomen (AAUW), The ELC Institute and a blog ex-ploring the nuances of a blended masculine-femininestyle of leadership contributing to business success.Trends are leaning towards increasing the represen-tation of women in corporate leadership and womenof color have the most ground to make up to reachparity.(continued on page 3)

A Roadmap to the Top forBlack Women Executives

Wisconsin sports fans are some of the most supportive in the nation. We give undying love to our Packers, Brewers, Bucks and even Admi-rals. There’s a new team in town to get excited about. The Milwaukee

Aces are a professional women’s basketball team that play their homegames at the Bloechl Center at Mount Mary University’s campus. TheAces are currently competing in their second season and play in theGlobal Women’s Basketball Association (GWBA). The Aces are led by head coach Stephaine Crosley, a former Cleve-

land State University standout player. The team consists mostly of Mil-waukee natives, many of whom have enjoyed successful collegeplaying careers. Several of the Aces hope to use the GWBA as a stepping stone to a

professional career overseas or in the WNBA. The founders of theGWBA hope their league can become a feeder league for larger pro-fessional women’s leagues. The Aces’ mission is to bring world class basketball to the community

that is non-stop entertainment, family friendly and inspires confidencein women, girls, and those who believe in them. The team aims to ex-pose the community, especially girls, to strong female role models. TheAces are proud to represent the city of Milwaukee and greatly value theopportunity they have to impact members of the community. The Milwaukee Aces play a summer schedule that begins in early

June and concludes in postseason playoffs in August. The Aces squareoff against other Midwestern GWBA teams such as the Akron Innova-tors and the Illinois Starletz. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance from
