More than 500 people attended the awards dinner, where the Minister for State Growth, Matthew Groom, presented awards to the winning students, trainers and employers. The Tasmanian Training Awards are part of the Australian Training Awards, sponsored by the Federal Government, and most of the state winners will represent Tasmania at the national awards to be held in Canberra, in November. The TasTAFE Apprentice of the Year was Ashton Brown, of Pipers River. Her chosen apprenticeship was Mobile Plant Technology. Federal Group Trainee of the Year was Emily Nixon, a business trainee from The Glen in the north east. Other individual student winners included the Rotary Club of Deloraine Vocational Student of the Year, Colin Curlewis, TasTAFE Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year, Michelle Maynard, JobNet Tasmania VET in Schools Student of the Year, Mikayla Rumbold and Consumer, Building and Occupational Services School Based Trainee of the Year, Constance Perry. Arop Majok of Mornington was named Work & Training Equity Vocational Student of the Year, recognising a vocational student who has overcome significant obstacles to achieve success. The annual awards also reward best practice by employers, trainers and training organisations, with South32 TEMCO winning the TCCI Large Employer of the Year Award, and JBS Devonport the TCCI Medium Employer of the Year. TASMANIAN TRAINING AWARDS 2017

TASMANIA’S vocational education and training industry gathered at Wrest Point last night to recognise the year’s high achievers at the annual Tasmanian Training Awards.

More than 500 people attended the awards dinner, where the Minister for State Growth, Matthew Groom, presented awards to the winning students, trainers and employers.

The Tasmanian TrainingAwards are part of the

Australian Training Awards, sponsored by the Federal Government, and most of the state winners will represent Tasmania at the national awards to be held in Canberra, in November.

The TasTAFE Apprenticeof the Year was Ashton Brown,of Pipers River. Her chosen apprenticeship was Mobile Plant Technology. Federal Group Trainee of the Year was Emily Nixon, a business trainee from The Glen in the north east.

All winners will have theopportunity to represent thestate at the Australian Train-ing Awards in Canberra laterin the year.

THE JobNet Tasmania VET in Schools Student of the Year for 2017 is Hellyer College student Mikayla Rumbold, of Zeehan.

Mikayla has undertakena variety of vocational courses at school while considering future career options.

During Year 11 at Hellyer College, she completed a Certificate II in Hairdressing and enjoyed a work placement with Millennium Hair & Beauty, in Shorewell.

By the end of Year 12 this year she will have

completed two Certificate III qualifications, in Hospitality and Tourism.

“After my VET studies Iknow that I really enjoy meeting and dealing with a wide range of customers and can see my future in a customer service role in the tourism or hospitality industries.”

As JobNet VET in Schools Student of the Year, she wins $2000 sponsored by JobNet Tasmania, a $250 travel voucher from Andrew Jones Travel, and a specially designed trophy.

ASHTON Brown, of Pipers River, was named TasTAFE Apprentice of the Year for 2017, at last night’s Tasmanian Training Awards.

Ashton is employed byFarm Machinery Tasmania, inLongford, and completed herqualification in Mobile PlantTechnology through TasTAFEin January.

She grew up on the familydairy farm, and her interest inmechanics grew from helpingher father repair and maintainthe farm’s machinery.

An automotive VET courseundertaken as part of Year 12at Launceston Church Gram-mar confirmed her vocationalchoice.

“I was told several timesthat I wouldn’t be able to sus-

tain a career in such a maledominated industry, but I wasdetermined to follow my pas-sion,” she said.

As TasTAFE Apprentice of

the Year for 2017, Aston wins$3000 cash, a $250 travelvoucher from Andrew JonesTravel and a specially designedtrophy.

She will also be part of theTasmanian team to representthe state at the AustralianTraining Awards, to be held inCanberra, in November.

Setting sites high gives Colin the edgeROTARY Club of Deloraine Vocational Student of the Year, Colin Curlewis, has been a site supervisor for Hansen Yuncken Ltd for seven years and is currently responsible for supervising its Parliament Square project in Hobart.

For Colin, married, withtwo young boys and a demanding job, the thought of vocational study was challenging, but he saw it as a way to improve his workplace effectiveness andto progress in the industry.

Last year, with the support of his employer, he completed his Certificate IV in Building and

Construction with Learning Partners and is now undertaking a Diploma of Project Management.

“I love my job and am keen to keep learning – I believe that my immediate goal of becoming a Project Manager on a major Hansen Yuncken project is now in sight,” he said.

As Tasmania’s Vocational Student of the Year, he receives $3000 from the Rotary Club of Deloraine, a $250 travel voucher from Andrew Jones Travel and a trophy. He will also represent Tasmania at the Australian Training Awards, in Canberra later this year.

THIS year’s Federal GroupTrainee of the Year, EmilyNixon, grew up on a farm innorth east Tasmania and al-ways knew that agriculturewould play a part in her future.

Last year, Michelle was ac-cepted as an intern in theNayri Niara Festival program,designed to build skills in pro-ject management for the NayriNiara Good Spirit Festival.

She completed CertificateIV in Project ManagementPractice through the Instituteof Project Management.

As a result of her studies,Michelle not only successfullydelivered her discrete projectfor the Festival, the Sand Cir-cle, but was promoted to therole of co-producer overseeingthe entire Nayri Niara Festival.

“The training has given methe confidence to challengemyself and to pursue a careerin events management andcreating community connec-tive experiences. It has opened

The VET Teacher/Trainerof the Year Award recognisesoutstanding individualachievement in VET training,and this year’s winner is MattEyles from Hobart College.

Matt uses his diverse life ex-perience as a registered nurse,science teacher and working inGovernment, community ser-vices and the Australian RedCross, to prepare young peoplefor the workplace.

He has developed and im-plemented the “Introductionto Nursing” course to engagestudents in the health sector,turning a classroom into a fivebed hospital and providing stu-dents with the opportunity to

gain real “hands-on” experi-ence with prospective employ-ers.

Matt’s innovative methodshave led to high attendancerates and outstanding out-comes.

As VET Teacher/Trainer ofthe Year Matt receives $3000and a trophy, and will rep-resent Tasmania at the Austra-lian Training Awards, inCanberra in November.

The Large Training Pro-vider of the Year for 2017 is theTasmanian Secondary Colleg-es RTO, which provides train-ing and assessment for VET inschools programs across eightsecondary colleges and 10 ex-tension Year 11/12 schoolsthroughout Tasmania.

With strong industry input,the TSC RTO has been an out-standing success over 10 years

and currently has 137 trainersand assessors delivering 146different VET programs to2769 students in schools andcolleges around the state.

The Small Training Pro-vider of the Year award waswon for the second consecu-tive year by Avidity Trainingand Development.

The Launceston-basedcompany has again recordedoutstanding achievement inhelping individual, communi-ties and organisations growand reach their full potential,demonstrating a high level ofprofessionalism and innova-tion, particularly in the equityspace.

The winners will have theopportunity to represent thestate at the Australian Train-ing Awards in Canberra laterin the year.

SMITHTON’S ConstancePerry was named Consumer,Building and OccupationalServices School-based Traineeof the Year at last night’s Atthe Tasmanian TrainingAwards.

The award recognises a stu-dent who achieves excellenceas a trainee or apprentice whilestill at school.

Constance is currently en-rolled in Certificate II in RetailServices at Hellyer College andher employer is a boutiquebusiness Lizzy’s This ‘n That,located in Smithton.

She is also undertaking Cer-

tificate II in Tourism.Constance is aiming for a

service-related career whichinvolves working and interact-ing with people, and chose thetraineeship to advance herskills and knowledge in theworkplace.

As School-based Trainee ofthe Year she wins $3000 spon-sored by CBOS, a $250 travelvoucher from Andrew JonesTravel and a specially designedtrophy, and she will also rep-resent Tasmania at the Austra-lian Training Awards whichwill be held in Canberra, in No-vember.

Being sold on retail pays dividends

THE Equity Awards at theTasmanian Training Awardsrecognise students who haveovercome significant obstaclesto achieve success.

The Work and TrainingLtd. Equity Vocational Studentof the Year is Arop Majok, ofMornington.

Arop is from South Sudanand arrived in Tasmania in2006 after spending most ofhis childhood in a Kenyan

refugee camp, with little accessto formal schooling.

He began his vocationaleducation here with TasTAFE,enrolling in Certificate I inSpoken and Written English,and has since completed sixmore vocational courses, mostrecently Certificate III in AgedCare and Certificate III inCommunity Care, while em-ployed with Oak Possability.

No stranger to hardship,

Arop has made the most of hisopportunities here and his de-termination and self belief hasled to success.

Last year his hard workmade it possible to travel backto South Sudan to see hismother for the first time in 23years.

As winner of the equityaward, Arop will receive $1000and a specially designed tro-phy.

Self-belief spells success
