‘Slime’ toys the old, new craze among

kids all over the world are banned from classrooms in Bahrain.

Education Ministry, in a circular issued on October 3, instructed principals of

which can cause medical problems to “respiratory system and skin”, the circular warns.

The move follows a similar warning issued by Industry, Commerce and Tourism Ministry 11 months ago, citing health concerns.

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded yesterday to the

International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, a group of mostly young activists pushing for a global treaty to ban the cataclysmic bombs.

The award of the $1.1-million prize comes amid heightened tensions over both North Korea’s aggressive development of nuclear weapons and President Donald Trump’s persistent criticism of the deal to curb Iran’s nuclear program.

The prize committee wanted “to send a signal to North

Korea and the U.S. that they need to go into negotiations,” Oeivind Stenersen, a historian of the peace prize, said. “The prize is also coded support to the Iran nuclear deal. I think this was wise because recognising the Iran deal itself could have been seen as giving support to the Iranian state.”

The Geneva-based ICAN has campaigned actively for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons adopted by the United Nations in July, but which needs ratification from 50 countries. Only three countries have ratified it so far. It organized events

globally in 2015 to mark the 70th anniversaries of the World War II U.S. atomic bombings of the Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Last month in Berlin, ICAN protesters

teamed up with other organisations to demonstrate outside the U.S. and North Korean embassies

against the possibility of nuclear war between the two countries. Wearing masks of Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, protesters

posed next to a dummy nuclear missile and a large banner reading “Time to Go: Ban Nuclear

Weapons.”T h e

g r o u p “has been

a driving force in

prevailing upon the world’s nations to pledge to cooperate ... in efforts to stigmatise, prohibit and eliminate nuclear weapons,” Norwegian Nobel Committee chairwoman Berit Reiss-Andersen said in the announcement.

The prize “sends a message to all nuclear-armed states and all states that continue to rely on nuclear weapons for security that it is unacceptable behaviour. We will not support it, we will not make excuses for it, we can’t threaten to indiscriminately slaughter hundreds of thousands of civilians in the name of security. That’s not how you build security,” ICAN executive director Beatrice Fihn told reporters in Geneva.

She said that she “worried that it was a prank” after getting a phone call just minutes before the official Peace Prize announcement was made. Fihn said she didn’t believe it until she heard the name of the group proclaimed on television.

ICAN leaders later popped open some bubbly to celebrate the prize, and held up a banner with the name of the organization in their small Geneva headquarters.

“We are trying to send very strong signals to all states with nuclear arms, nuclear-armed states — North Korea, U.S., Russia, China, France, U.K., Israel, all of them, India, Pakistan — it is unacceptable to threaten to kill civilians,” she said.

Reiss-Andersen noted that similar prohibitions have been reached on chemical and biological weapons, land mines and cluster munitions.

“Nuclear weapons are even more destructive, but have not yet been made the object of a similar international legal prohibition,” she said.

Reiss-Andersen said “through its inspiring and innovative support for the U.N. negotiations on a treaty banning nuclear weapons, ICAN has played a major part in bringing about what in our day and age is equivalent to an international peace congress.”

Asked by journalists whether the prize was essentially symbolic, given that no international measures against nuclear weapons have been reached, Reiss-Andersen said “What will not have an impact is being passive.” (AP)

BUSINESS8 Saturday, October 7, 2017

New Delhi

India and the European Union yesterday adopted a

joint declaration to increase cooperation in counter terrorism measures and maritime security, taking their strategic ties to next level at the 14th India-EU Summit.

After the delegation-level talks with the President of the European Council, Donald Franciszek Tusk, and the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, here, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, India and the EU have agreed on the need to fight terrorism together and increase cooperation towards it.”

President Tusk noted, “Adopted declaration on counter-terrorism to deal effectively with the threat posed by foreign terrorist fighters, terror financing & arms supply.”

Elaborating, Prime Minister Modi said, “They will not only expand bilateral ties but also enhance partnership at the global level. European Union is India’s biggest trade partner and one of the biggest FDI partners.”

European Council President Donald Tusk said,

He added, “We adopted a joint declaration on counter-terrorism in which we agree to counter violent extremism and radicalisation, particularly on-line, and to deal effectively with the threat posed by foreign terrorist fighters, terrorist financing and arms supply.”

During the meeting, while India pushed the EU for assuming a greater role of a security provider, the EU was firm on pushing the stalled talks of the proposed India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), that begun a decade ago.

“India has to agree to highest standards of data. If India’s standards match that of data protection standard of the EU, then only will we recognise India for data adequacy for free exchange of data between our companies,” said Juncker.

Tusk said, “India and EU

have decided to develop dynamic trade and step up cooperation on global and regional issues.”

The Trump administration wants NASA to land humans on the Moon and establish presence on the lunar surface before sending astronauts to the Red Planet and beyond. US Vice President Mike Pence made the administration’s intentions known during the inaugural meeting of the National Space Council -- a newly resurrected executive group aimed at guiding the US space agenda.

NASA plans to expand human presence in the solar system starting in the vicinity of the Moon using its new deep space exploration transportation systems, the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft. The space station partners are working to identify common exploration objectives and possible missions for the 2020s, including the gateway concept.

NASA aims developing a plan for an innovative and sustainable pro-gramme of exploration with com-mercial and international partners to enable human expansion across the solar system, returning humans to the Moon for long-term exploration and utilization, followed by human mis-sions to Mars and other destinations.

NASA in late September entered into an agreement with Russian space agency Roscosmos to give shape to the “deep-

space gateway” concept, a mission archi-tecture designed to send astronauts into

cis-lunar space, or lunar orbit. (IANS)

GREEN CAMPINGThe winter camping season will be starting soon and

campers will be flocking to Sakhir and adjacent areas especially during weekends. The five-month camping season is expected to conclude in March 2018 with many governmental authorities managing and monitoring the camping activities to avoid occurring of any accident due to sensitivity of the area and to protect the natural environment. The camping areas have been marked and displayed for the people’s attention to book the location/ site and register their camps.

Camping is not only an outing and enjoyment but it also serve as a learning method of how to live close to the nature. Once we are enjoying the camping, we often forget and disregard the environment and mistreat it with our careless behavior.

The authorities like previous years have devised plans and programs and are creating awareness among the campers on safety and environmental concerns through media, notices, billboards and banners. Each year sees more improvements, which are base on the experiences on the ground during the camping season. As per the rules, the campers are required to camp at least 150 meters away from any oil and gas fields and more than 50 meters away from the electricity voltage pylons and main roads to ensure their safety. This year again, officials have ambitious plans to organize awareness campaigns to combat littering menace and imposing fines on violators.

The Supreme Camping Season Committee has asked the campers to camp in the allocated areas, register their camps and obtain camping label, stressing that camps that are not registered or against the rules will be removed. The campers are advised to place the camping label issued in a clear and prominent place. Placing of fencing or installing signs, poles as well as afforestation work before the start of camping season are not allowed. The committee has also urged campers to maintain their safety by providing safety equipment in tents like a fire extinguisher and a first-aid kit, not to use open fires or stoves inside tents and provide an independent venue for the kitchen.

Campers are also advised not to store any flammable materials or chemicals in the camp in any form. Camp should be established away from slopes, to avoid damages due to rain and floods, mountain heights, restricted areas or pipes. Campers have been asked to maintain cleanliness of the camps by collecting garbage in bags and putting them in the allocated spots for garbage collection. Burning waste during or after the end of the camping season has also been prohibited and will be checked and monitored by the authorities.

The committee also prohibited establishing buildings of brick or cement, putting barriers or tires in the camping sites. Barns are not allowed for any purpose. Keeping animals and hunting is also prohibited. The engagement in any action that would harm the environment and the wildlife is prohibited. It includes the destruction of trees, wild plants, leveling the ground etc.

The principle of green camping is “If you brought it in....you need to take it out and leave the area just as you found it.”

Let us follow some basic rules for our safety, health and environmental conservation at the camping sites.• Useminimumilluminationandelectronicgadgets.• Switch off all electricity appliances and instruments

when not in use.• Useminimumwaterandturnoffthetapsafteruse.• Do not store anywaste at site. Keep all recyclable and

disposable waste in separate bags. • Avoidusingdisposableplates, cups, cutlery, dishes etc.

Use reusable dishes and utensils and wash them after each use.• Don’t throw any food in open. It will attract vermin,

birds, insects and rodents.Let us be more environmental conscious and respect our

resources while enjoying the camping season this year. * Head of Waste Disposal Unit, Supreme Council for

Apple  yesterday revealed the new emoji that will be

making their way to  iOS 11.1. While there is no fixed release date for iOS 11.1 yet, Apple says the new emoji will debut in next week’s developer and public beta previews of iOS 11.1, and then be available in upcoming software updates for iOS, macOS and watchOS.

Based on  Unicode 10, the new emoji characters number in the hundreds, Apple said in an emailed statement. Emojipedia, the go to source for all your emoji information, however has a more specific number - 239, when taking into account gender and skin tone. It adds however, that the final list has yet to be confirmed, so that number may vary slightly upon release.

The new emojis that Apple is set to release with iOS 11.1 include “more emotive smiley faces, gender-neutral characters, clothing options, food types, animals, mythical creatures, and more”, the company said, adding that the

emoji have been designed to “reveal every detail and adapted from approved characters in Unicode 10.”

Examples of the new emojis that will be launched with iOS 11.1 include Woman with Headscarf, Bearded Person, Breastfeeding, Zombie, Person Climbing, Person in Steamy Room, Genie, Elf, Merperson, Vampire, Fairy, Mage, Child, Adult, Palms Up Together, Person in Lotus Position, as well as new food items such as Sandwich and Coconut. Emojipedia has a complete

list. Apple has also decided to include the ‘Love You’ gesture, designed after the ‘I love you’ hand sign in American Sign Language.

Apple’s announcement comes a few days after WhatsApp  introduced  its own set of emojis. Visible in the WhatsApp beta for Android, the emoji designs chosen by the Facebook-owned messaging service look very similar to those Apple has been using recently, and quite separate from what Facebook Messenger offers. Here is a few things that will make enhance the functionality of using WhatsApp:

Create GIFs

Editing Images

WhatsApp has been supporting GIFS for a while now. But did you know that you can even create GIFS within WhatsApp and send it to your friends? However, we should point out that you can only create GIFS using videos that are saved on your smartphone.Open the WhatsApp chat of the contact whom you want to send the GIF to. Click on the attach icon > Select Gallery > Go to videos. Select the video you wish to create in a GIF from. As soon as you do this, it’ll open up in the video editing section of WhatsApp. Here, you have to adjust the length of the video to 6 seconds or less, as long-er GIFS are not supported by WhatsApp.Once the video length is less than 6 seconds, the option of converting it to a GIF will appear as a slider on top right. Now all you need to do is take the slider towards GIF, and you’re set.

When we say that you can edit images on WhatsApp before sending them, we are not talking about Snapchat fil-ters. What you can do here is doodle on pictures, and add text and emoticons on them before sending. Select attach > Go to gallery > Select the image you wish to share. Once you do this, the image will open in WhatsApp’s photo editor. On top right, you’ll see options of adding text, emoticons and doodle. You can resize and change colours of all three once you add them to your image.

Saudi Arabia foils ISIL suicide plot in RiyadhRiyadh

Saudi Arabia said on Thursday it had dismantled

an Islamic State cell in the capital Riyadh, in connection with a plot to launch a suicide attack on the defence ministry.

Two militants were killed and five others arrested in raids on three locations on Wednesday, an official source in the newly-

created Presidency of State Security said in a statement on state-run television.

Thursday’s statement said a suicide bomber in the eastern Riyadh district of al-Rimal detonated his vest after security forces surrounded a house used to manufacture suicide vests and explosives.

Another militant was

killed by security forces after he holed up with firearms in an apartment in the western district of al-Namar, it said.

The third raid was at a horse stable in the southern Riyadh suburb of al-Ghanamia which the statement said had been used as a headquarters.

Security forces seized firearms and bomb-making

materials, shown on state television along with a burned out car and a damaged building where the first militant had blown himself up. The suspects were not identified.

Security forces closed off several areas in Riyadh, and videos shared online showed a plume of smoke rising at one location. (Reuters) A damaged vehicle is seen following a raid by Saudi security forces

Leopard spotted in India Suzuki factoryWildlife officials in India

have caught a leopard nearly 36 hours after it was first spotted in a car factory.

Rescuers tranquilised the animal after a massive search operation at Maruti Suzuki’s manufacturing plant in Manesar town, not far from the capital, Delhi.

The big cat was first spotted early on Thursday morning on CCTV, and made several other appearances after that.

Nightshift workers evacuated the building and part of the sprawling factory complex was closed.

The car plant is the largest in India, producing almost a million vehicles a year.

When thousands of morning workers arrived, they

were forced to stand outside and wait while 12 forest department workers and about 50 policemen were deployed in the search.

The animal was spotted on CCTV in the engine

department, which covers six acres.

A local journalist at the scene told the BBC that rescuers had brought in two live goats and raw meat to lure the leopard out of hiding. (BBC)

Format textThere’s a good chance you’re already aware of this feature but have never used it. Somehow, changing formats of text on WhatsApp never really caught on. We’ll tell you again how to for-mat text on WhatsApp as it is a handy feature to use.You can bold text on

WhatsApp by starting it and following it with an asterisk ‘*’. Similarly, for italics, make sure the text is preceded and followed by an underscore sign ‘_’. You can also make your text appear struck off with Strikethrough. For that precede and follow it with tilde ‘~’. (ToI)

Suicide hotline numbersVery few people are aware of this feature, but WhatsApp actually has suicide hotline numbers. Just go to Settings > Help > FAQ > Security and Privacy. The second last option in the list that’ll drop down is ‘Global Suicide Hotline Resources.’ The security and privacy section may also answer other queries you have about WhatsApp.

Majida Sultan, renowned Bahraini actress

affirmed that the third edition of the Khalid  Bin Hamad Theatres Festival For National Clubs, Youth Centres and People With Disability reflects the keenness of HH Shaikh  Khalid  bin Hamad Al-Khalifa in developing local talents and empowering Bahraini youth.

The third show in the festival will be performed by Zallaq Youth Centre on Saturday and is titled “The Banner”. It is directed by Ismail Murad and will be judged by veteran Bahraini director and superstar Jamaan Al-Rowaiee.

Sultan’s statements came during her visit to the festival at Muharraq Model Youth Centre in Busaiteen on Thursday.

The actress said the festival serves several noble goals set by Shaikh Khalid, the First

Deputy President of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, President of Bahrain Athletics Association and Honourary President of the Bahrain Disabled Sports Federation, in improving and developing the Bahraini cultural and artistic fields.

She attended the first play in the festival, “We Haven’t Started” performed by Tubli Cultural and Sports Club.

The festival organised for the third consecutive year by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs and the Media Office of HH Shaikh  Khalid  bin Hamad Al-Khalifa will conclude on October 21.

This year’s edition is themed #Let’s_Plant_A_Smile and aims at empowering the youth in the fields of cultural and humanitarian works.

Local youth centres and clubs will perform 12 plays during the 18-day long festival, which will also include three additional

shows that will be held on the sidelines of the main shows.

As for the first play, the audience was pleased to attend the exciting and purposeful performance of Tubli Cultural and Sports Club team. Directed by Jassim Tallaq, the play was inspired by Max Rene and shed light on the injustice in the work

field. The Jury of the festival nominated Bahraini actor Sadiq Abdul-Redha as the best actor in the play.

Las Vegas

The Australian girlfriend of the Las Vegas mass shooter

said he showed signs of mental illness — such as laying in bed and screaming, a new report reveals.

Marilou Danley revealed Stephen Paddock “would lie in bed, just moaning and screaming, ‘Oh my God,’” according to an NBC News report citing former FBI officials briefed on the matter.

Ms Danley also said that Paddock showed “mental health symptoms,” one of the unnamed officials said.

Investigators are struggling to figure out why Paddock, 64, went on the deadly spree that killed 58 and injured nearly 500 others.

Police and the FBI are also investigating whether he planned a car bombing.

The chilling revelations came as  new detail emerged yesterday about Paddock’s lifestyle.

A former worker at the Atlantis Casino Resort and Spa in Reno, Nevada, where Las Vegas shooter Paddock frequently gambled, said he had a “god complex” and expected quick service no matter how busy employees were.

“It was just his demeanour. It was like, ‘I’m here. Don’t cross me. Don’t look at me too long’,” said former executive host John Weinreich.

Another gambler described him as “creepy”.

It was here that Paddock met his Australian partner Ms Danley, 62, who has been described as “a person of interest” by investigators.

Ms Danley previously worked as a high roller hostess at the casino which is about a 20 minute drive

from the Reno home they shared and were both last seen at in August.

They had another home in Mesquite, an hour northeast of Las Vegas. Both have been raided by police who found weapons and explosives.

Ms Danley was questioned in Los Angeles Wednesday by the FBI and is understood to be staying in the city with her daughter, who lives in Venice Beach. Sheila Darcy Linton, 40, is an artist with a seven-year-old son.

The family home has been empty since media camped on their street from Monday, according to neighbours, who described Ms Linton and her husband Micah Linton as “just a normal family”.

“They seem very nice. I feel sorry for them to have been thrust into this,” said one neighbour, who did not wish to be identified.

Meanwhile, Las Vegas officials yesterday began releasing the bodies of the victims to their families, but warned it could be months before they learn exactly how their loved-ones died.

Clark County Coroner John Fudenberg said his staff had worked day and night to notify families that their loved ones had been killed.

“This has been very, very difficult,” Mr Fudenberg said.

Employees had endeavoured to speak with as many as five family members per hour in recent days, he said.

The remains were slowly being released to local mortuaries, which have pledged to help both local and out-of-town families receive their loved ones and prepare them for funerals. (news.com.au)

Jackie Chan fans, rejoice! There may be a fourth ‘Rush Hour’ movie on its way.The 63-year-old actor has revealed a sequel to the hit movies is most likely

to happen. The filming could start as early as next year, but there’s a catch. Chan wants his original ‘Rush Hour’ co-star Chris Tucker to be back for the

fourth part.He said, “For the last 20 years, I’ve tried different [characters]. A few years ago, ‘Karate Kid’. There was supposed to be a Karate Kid 2 but the script isn’t

right. Several years later they want to do it and I say, ‘You still want to do Karate Kid? No, Karate Men.’ They’re taller than me

now! Rush Hour, you can do any time. Next year!” (TOI)

The Hurt Locker has been talked up as that rarest of things: a film about the war in Iraq

that doesn’t preach or pontificate, that isn’t instant box-office poison. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, whose track record includes Point Break (1991) and Strange Days (1995), it’s a super-sharp, nerve-shredding thriller that reveals more about the realities of contemporary military conflict than most documentaries, is as fissile and explosive as a Transformers movie, and delivers a powerful and often haunting critique of American society both at home and as its faultlines are expressed abroad.

Written by Mark Boal, who furnished the story for another Iraq-based film, 2007’s In the Valley of Elah, and based on his experiences an embedded Rolling Stone journalist, it is set in 2004 and follows the members of an elite US bomb-disposal team as they move across the debris-littered streets of Baghdad looking for explosive devices to defuse.

After one of them is blown up, Staff Sergeant William James (Jeremy Renner) arrives on the scene. It turns out he’s something of a wild card, a fearless operator who virtually runs to sites of maximum danger, not only disregarding the advice of colleagues, but chucking away the handsets designed to let him hear their concerns about his actions.

It’s understandable if members of his team, among them Sergeant Sanborn (Anthony Mackie) and Specialist Owen Eldridge (Brian Geraghty), treat him with the same suspicion they regard every inch of the shredded, debris-littered alleys and public squares they are meant to be looking after. Sanborn calls him a “red-neck piece of trailer trash” and punches him out. (telegraph.co.uk) Before the release, ‘Batman v Superman’ was assumed to be a hit like any

DC movie. But apparently post release, the critics and fans weren’t much impressed in spite of the heavy Box Office success.

Much to its dismay, ‘Batman v Superman’ received just 27 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, which can arguably be the most divisive comic book movie of our time.

Now, according to a report, even the Batman himself, Ben Affleck, agreed to the harsh criticism the movie received.

During an interview, Affleck, who portrayed the iconic Dark Knight in the Warner Bros. superhero flick, revealed that he thinks such criticisms are “fair”.

“I can understand people saying (Batman V Superman) was too dark, or this was outside the tone of what I’m used to seeing with a Batman story, and I think

that’s a fair criticism,” he said. (TOI)

People might step on your toes today, but try not to react. Go with the flow. This may be the only way they know how to act. Express your feelings. Open yourself up to the world. There are people who want to get closer to you, but they might feel too intimidated to do so. Take it one step at a time.

This is a fantastic day for you, so celebrate. You’re the star of the show, and you’ll be up on stage more than usual. People will look up to you and respect you for your incredible leadership skills. Be confident and express yourself from your heart. Actions should run smoothly. You can accomplish quite a bit. Don’t waste this day. Do some creative work.Something may get your dander up today. There are hot tempers and strong opinions right and left. Try to see the big picture. You’ll seek extra attention from others, especially when it comes to your needs and emotions. People will be irritable, but arguing will only make the situation worse.

Cooperate today even if it seems easier said than done. People will have hot tempers and be very focused on themselves. There’s a me-first attitude around, and relations will be much better if you let people have their time in the spotlight. You might find that you have an important message to express. Make sure your voice is heard.

People will be focused on themselves, leaving you wondering what all the fuss is about. You have a strong desire to express your emotions. It may feel like you’re on stage in some way. You wish to be recognized and appreciated for your sensitive, devoted, and passionate nature. Speak up.

The energy flows smoothly today. Obstacles seem to have dissolved. There’s a great deal of energy at your disposal. You have strong thoughts and powerful emotions backing you up. Work with partners and promote your ideas. Speak your passions out loud. Help your dreams manifest by writing them down.

There’s a spark about to ignite inside you. Pay close attention to your emotions and take care of yourself physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Infuse your plans with passion. Breathe life into your dreams and act with confidence. The inner and outer aspects of your being are working in harmony.

Your emotions are piqued today. You’re spurred to take action. People might have a me-first attitude that may get on your nerves. You’re more interested in the collective and improving the situation for all. Someone may be working counter to this mode of action, causing friction in your dealings. Stick to your principles and act confidently.

This is a very opportune day for you. Say hello to the stranger in line or follow through on a tip or comment. Opportunities are there. All you have to do is grab them. You’d do very well in a group situation today. In fact, you’d do well leading others. You understand the need for action. Be decisive and confident.

Get off the couch and get into action. Come out of hiding and let others hear what you have to say. Let your emotions shine and don’t be concerned about what others think. Dance like no one’s watching. Passion will be the key to manifesting your dreams. This is a great day to act bravely toward those dreams.

This is a fantastic day. Assert yourself with confidence and move toward your goals. Your emotions are working harmoniously with your outer-directed nature. You may want more attention from others today. Enjoy jovial times with friends and loved ones. Plan an activity with children if you can. Break free from your normal routine and create your own fun.

People may seem a bit more stubborn and emotional than usual. Try not to contribute to it by being vain and stubborn. This isn’t the time to contemplate. It’s time to act. You have all the information you need. Make sure you’re actively getting the attention you deserve and you’re giving credit to the people who’ve helped you along the way.

North Korea is preparing to test a long-range

Anton Morozov, a member of the Russian lower house of parliament’s international affairs committee, and two other Russian lawmakers visited Pyongyang on October 2-6, Russia’s RIA

new tests of a long-range missile. They even gave us mathematical calculations that they believe prove that their missile can hit the west coast of the United States,” Morozov said on Friday, according to RIA.

“As far as we understand, they intend to launch one more long-range missile in the near future. And in general, their mood is rather belligerent.“ (Reuters)

A crowded bus was sliced in two by a speeding

train after stalling on a level crossing, killing at least 21 people, including three children.

The horrifying smash saw part of the vehicle dragged 200ft along the track, and harrowing video of the aftermath shows bodies and belongings surrounding the wreckage.

It has emerged that the bus driver pleaded with men on board to help push it after it became stuck, but did not order passengers to evacuate.

The tragedy happened in the Vladimir region of Russia

as the bus travelled from Kazakhstan to Moscow.

People onboard were woken by the terrified driver at around 3.30am, and dozens of people attempted to move it.

Then a railway crossing attendant at Pokrov station shouted: “A train, a train.....”

He sounded an emergency alarm and the express train from St Petersburg to Nizhny Novgorod slowed but not enough to avoid appalling carnage.

The regional governor’s press secretary said the bus was going around a traffic jam when it arrived at the railroad crossing and stalled.

“People inside the bus were sleeping, there were around 50 of them. The driver shouted and 34 people ran out of the bus to push it. They survived.

“Those who remained in the bus died. It got literally torn apart,” said Rita Shlyakhtina.

Alexander Kiryukhin, head of Health Department of Vladimir region, said: “The latest report is that 19 people were killed in the crash, 34 people survived.

“The survivors are currently in a temporary shelter, they are getting food and psychological help. (mirror.co.uk)

Washington

President Donald Trump is expected to announce

soon that he will decertify the landmark international deal to curb Iran’s nuclear program, a senior administration official said on Thursday, in a step that potentially could cause the 2015 accord to unravel.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Trump is also expected to roll out a broader U.S. strategy on Iran that would be more confrontational. The Trump administration has frequently criticized Iran’s conduct in the Middle East.

Trump, who has called the pact an “embarrassment” and “the worst deal ever negotiated,” has been weighing whether it serves U.S. security interests as he faces an Oct. 15 deadline for certifying that Iran is complying with its terms.

“We must not allow Iran ... to obtain nuclear weapons,” Trump said during a meeting with military leaders at the White House on Thursday, adding:

“The Iranian regime supports terrorism and exports violence, bloodshed and chaos across the Middle East. That is why we must put an end to Iran’s continued aggression and nuclear ambitions. They have not lived up to the spirit of their agreement.”

Asked about his decision on whether to certify the landmark deal, Trump said: “You’ll be hearing about Iran very shortly.”

Supporters say its collapse could trigger a regional arms race and worsen Middle East tensions, while opponents say it went too far in easing sanctions without requiring that Iran end its nuclear program permanently.

Iranian authorities have repeatedly said Tehran would not be the first to violate the accord, under which Iran agreed to restrict its nuclear program in return for lifting most international sanctions that had crippled its economy.

If Trump declines to certify Iran’s compliance, U.S. congressional leaders would have 60 days to decide whether to reimpose sanctions on Tehran suspended under the agreement.

Whether Congress would be willing to reimpose sanctions is far from clear. While Republicans, and some Democrats, opposed the deal when it was approved in 2015, there is little obvious appetite in Congress for dealing with the Iran issue now.

The prospect that Washington could renege on the pact, which was signed by the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia, China, the European Union and Iran, has worried some of the U.S. allies that helped negotiate it.

“We, the Europeans, we have hammered this: the agreement is working,” said a European diplomat who asked to remain anonymous. “We as Europeans, have repeated ... it’s impossible to reopen the agreement. Period. It’s

impossible.”French President Emmanuel

Macron said last month there was no alternative to the nuclear accord, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

A senior Iranian diplomat told Reuters on Thursday the end result of Trump’s expected move would be to isolate the United States since the Europeans would continue to support it.

“Many foreign investors told us that they will not be scared away from Iran’s market if Trump de-certifies the deal,” the diplomat said.

Trump has long criticized the pact, a signature foreign policy achievement of his Democratic predecessor Barack Obama.

The administration was considering Oct. 12 for Trump to give a speech on Iran but no final decision had been made, an official said previously.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a close ally of Trump, last month said that unless provisions in the accord removing restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program over time are eliminated, it should be canceled.

“Fix it, or nix it,” Netanyahu said in a speech at the U.N. General Assembly annual gathering of world leaders on Sept. 19.

Many of Trump’s fellow Republicans who control Congress also have been critical of the deal. (Reuters)

MAIN POINTS OF 2015 NUCLEAR AGREEMENT WITH IRAN

Tehran

Iran’s atomic chief said on Thursday that the nuclear deal reached between

Iran and the world powers in 2015 is not renegotiable, Press TV reported.

“We have emphasized repeatedly that the nuclear deal (known as JCPOA) is not renegotiable,” said Ali Akbar Salehi,

head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, in the Italian capital of Rome.

“Some want the JCPOA to be renegotiated in technical dimensions, but it is not renegotiable,” Salehi added, referring to U.S. administration officials’ insistence on renegotiating Iran’s nuclear deal or quitting it. (Xinhua)

A senior Pakistani general acknowledged the

existence of links between the country’s intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and militant groups operating in the country on Thursday.

Pakistan army spokesperson Major General Asif Ghafoor said on Thursday that maintaining links with militant

groups is a normal activity for any intelligence agency, but stressed that the state does not support any terror group.

“There is a difference between links and support. Name an intelligence agency of any country that doesn’t have links with such groups,” Ghafoor said during a press conference at the Army Headquarters in Rawalpindi.

Ghafoor’s comments come after U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Dunford both criticized Pakistan for not doing enough against terror groups operating on its soil.

“We need to try one more time to make this strategy work with them, by, with and through the Pakistanis, and if our best efforts fail, the

president (Donald Trump) is prepared to take whatever steps are necessary,” Mattis told members of the House Armed Services Committee during a hearing on Tuesday.

In a different hearing in the Senate, the top U.S. military officer charged that Pakistan’s spy agency, ISI, maintained ties with militant groups. (voanews)

The England and Wales Cricket Board has

confirmed that Ben Stokes will not travel to Australia with the rest of the Ashes squad “at this stage”.

Stokes was arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm after an incident outside a Bristol nightclub in September.

He has still been awarded a central contract, while pace bowler Steven Finn has been added to the tour party.

Jonny Bairstow, Jake Ball and Liam Plunkett have each been given written warnings

for their conduct. The trio were part of the

night out in Bristol, but the reprimands are not connected to the Stokes incident, for which batsman Alex Hales volunteered to help police with their investigation.

All-rounder Stokes was arrested on a night out that followed England’s victory over West Indies in the third one-day international.

Stokes and Hales were left out of the fourth ODI, but the 26-year-old was still named in the original Ashes squad. (BBC)

an innings defined by its smoothness and control - ensured Sri Lanka’s first brush with day-night Test cricket was a success. They moved to 254 for 3 by stumps, after debutant Sadeera Samarawickrama contributed a delectable 38, and Dinesh Chandimal progressed to the verge of another cautious half-century. Earlier in the day, Kaushal Silva had hung around for 27 off 71 balls as well.

Pakistan had got themselves in the match soon after the tea break, when Samarawickrama and Kusal Mendis fell in quick succession. Though they had Sri Lanka 136 for 3 at one stage, no further wickets would come in the second half of the day. Their frustrations were compounded in the last half an hour when Mohammad Amir pulled up in the middle of 88th over and left the field clutching his thigh, prompting concerns over the state of his hamstring. Sarfraz Ahmed also burned their two reviews trying to dismiss the irritating Chandimal.

Though the quicks gleaned good movement with the new pink balls, it was Yasir Shah who was the most menacing bowler, getting faster and faster turn off the Dubai pitch through the day. He bowled 29.3 overs and returned figures of 2 for 90. Amir was the other bowler to make a breakthrough - his first in the series.

While other batsmen advanced at

varying rates around him, Karunaratne was Sri Lanka’s day one metronome. Samarawickrama produced a boundary-filled cameo; Chandimal and Kaushal stonewalled, almost becoming completely inert at times. Markram, Elgar hit tons as SA leadsDean Elgar and Aiden

Markram, South Africa’s opening batsmen, hit centuries to lead a dominating display by the home team in the second and final Test against Bangladesh at Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein.

South Africa ended the first day on 428 for 3 with Elgar making 113 while Markram hit 143. At stumps on Friday, Hashim Amla was batting on 89, in sight of his second century of the series, while Faf du Plessis, the South African captain, was on 62 not out.

Markram’s maiden Test century came in his second game, eight days after he was run out for 97 in his debut innings during the first match in Potchefstroom. The batsman, who turned 23 on Wednesday, admitted there was “a bit of extra focus in the 90s”. However, he got to his century in style, with back to back fours off Rubel Hossain. An over-pitched delivery was punched square on the off-side for four to take Markram to 97 and he hooked the next ball for another boundary.

“Fortunately I hit the gaps and the outfield was nice and quick,” he said. “It hasn’t hit home yet but I am very happy to have got there, especially after what happened last week.”

In what was almost an action replay of the first day of the first

Test, Mushfiqur Rahim won the toss again, and sent South Africa in to bat again, only for his bowlers to be punished by a massive opening partnership. The major difference was that Bangladesh reshuffled its bowling attack, retaining only Mustafizur Rahman among the front-line bowlers.

Markram said, though, that he was less surprised by being asked to bat than in the first Test. “There was a bit more in the wicket and although the scoring rate doesn’t show it, they were at us quite a bit,” he offered.

But although the pitch had more pace and bounce than in the previous match, it also contributed to a faster scoring rate as the ball came on to the bat better. Elgar and Markram’s partnership of 243 exceeded the 196 they put on to set up South Africa’s 333-run win in the opening match. (www.icc-cricket.com)

Nadal to meet Dimitrov in semis

Beijing

Rafael Nadal will look to get the better of a player hoping to join

him at next month’s Nitto ATP Finals, Grigor Dimitrov, today in

the China Open semi-finals. Nadal leads Dimitrov 8-1 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series.

“He is a player that I really like, a good friend on the Tour,” said Nadal. “He’s a great guy. I think Grigor is a player always with a great attitude, with a

positive character. I’m happy for him

that he’s having a good year.

Tomorrow will be a tough one, for sure. He’s playing well. He had a good victory today. Let’s see. I going to try to play my best. I hope to be ready for it.”

Top seed Nadal, who is bidding to become year-end No. 1 for the fourth time, knocked out sixth-seeded American John Isner 6-4, 7-6(0) to improve to a 23-5 mark at the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in China.

Nadal broke Isner’s serve at 5-4 in the first set, then recovered from 15/40 in the second game of the second set before sweeping through the tie-break. The Spanish superstar is now an ATP World Tour-best 59-9 (32-7 on hard courts) in 2017 and continues his quest for a 75th tour-level crown.

“I think I played a solid match,” said Nadal. “I played very well, changing good directions… I think on return I did well.

It’s an important victory for me, of course, against a player that arrived here playing so well, winning two great matches. For me it’s an important one and I’m very happy.”

Earlier in the day, Dimitrov further strengthened his bid for a spot at the Nitto ATP Finals - to be held at The O2 in London from 12-19 November - by advancing to the Beijing semi-finals.

Dimitrov improved to 38-15 on the season after he defeated fifth seed Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-2 in the quarter-finals over two

hours and 29 minutes. The victory gives Dimitrov 90 points in Emirates ATP Race To London, but the Bulgarian remains in fifth position 440 points behind Austrian Dominic Thiem. (atpworldtour)

Cilic delighted with run to Semis

Tokyo

Top seed Marin Cilic continued his quest for an 18th tour-level title yesterday when he reached

the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships 2017 semi-finals, a win that boosts his chances of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals.

Cilic was in devastating form, breaking Ryan Harrison’s serve five times in a 6-2, 6-0 victory over 53 minutes. The Croatian struck 11 aces and lost just one of his first service points (20/21). He also reached last year’s Tokyo semi-finals.

“It was definitely the best match for me this week, everything was functioning well from the beginning to the end,” said Cilic. “I was serving exceptionally well, I played aggressively and was able to return his serve. To play like this is a big boost for my confidence, something I was focusing on.”

The victory sees Cilic rise up one spot to No. 6 in the Emirates ATP Race To London on 3,075 points, 200 points fifth-placed Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, who advanced to the China Open semi-finals on Friday.

Cilic is attempting to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals for the third time (also 2014, 2016) and is now 36-15 on the season, which includes one ATP World Tour title in Istanbul from three finals (London-Queen’s Club and Wimbledon).

He will next face France’s Adrian Mannarino, who avenged his Antalya Open final loss to Yuichi Sugita by beating the Japanese player 6-2, 6-4 for his 27th match win of the year. (atpworldtour)

Jelena Ostapenko powered her way into the semifinals of the

China Open, beating Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-4 in a match dominated by errors and breaks of serve.

“We had some really good rallies,” said the World No.8. “Even I hit a lot of unforced errors, still I stayed very focused in the match and won it.”

The French Open champion wasted little time in asserting herself, breaking the Romanian’s serve within three minutes in the first game of the match.

She could not immediately back it up, though, serving up three errors including two double-faults to allow Cirstea to break right back; but Ostapenko broke again with her impressive forehand to take a 2-1 lead.

The 20-year-old did then manage to consolidate that lead,

and broke once more, but was still not looking confident on her own serve, with another double-fault allowing Cirstea to close the gap.

Ostapenko got the chance to serve out the first set, but Cirstea broke once more and then held to 15 to reduce the French Open champion’s lead to a single game.

The first set concluded as Ostapenko managed to hold in spectacular style, to love.

That gave her impetus as she began to overwhelm her opponent at the start of the second set, using her groundstrokes to good effect for the first time in the match.

Cirstea hit back at a disgruntled Ostapenko, levelling things at 3-3, but the Latvian responded with energy, breaking the Romanian’s serve and holding once more.

Ostapenko then served out the match to secure her seventh

semifinal of the year, where she will face Simona Halep - the woman she beat in the Roland Garros final. (wtatennis)

Zverev qualifies for Nitto ATP finals

London

Alexander Zverev is set to make his debut at the Nitto ATP Finals, to be held 12-19

November at The O2 in London. A winner of two ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles this season, the German joins Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the 2017 field, leaving five places up for grabs with six weeks to go until the season-ending tournament.

“I think it’s great for any player to qualify for a prestigious event that we have in London,” said Zverev, who attended the tournament in 2015 to receive his ATP Star of Tomorrow Award presented by Emirates. “It’s really an award for, I think, every player that shows that you’ve been one of the best players, not only for one or two weeks in a year, but you’ve been one of the best players for the whole year. That’s something special. That’s an amazing achievement for me, and I think for all the other guys, as well. (atpworldtour)Jelena Ostapenko (file pic)

Hamilton fastest amid

Suzuka delugeSuzuka

Lewis Hamilton put Mercedes top of the pile as severe rain led to an

almost total washout in second practice at Suzuka yesterday afternoon, with only five drivers setting timed laps and six electing not to run at all.

Conditions were so bad that the start of FP2 was delayed indefinitely - and when the lights did eventually go green after 45 minutes, few drivers rushed to venture out.

Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen eventually broke the silence for an exploration lap, but it wasn’t until Force India’s Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon headed out that the first flying laps were posted, with Ocon getting the best of that inter-team duel with a 1m 49.518s, some 19 seconds off his FP1 best.

Only three other drivers posted times - among them was Hamilton, who moved Mercedes back to the

front with a lap in the 1m 48s bracket - three quarters of a second faster than Ocon.

Williams’ Felipe Massa and Lance Stroll completed the top five, the latter having saved a wild moment of aquaplaning that sent him perilously close to the barriers on the outside of Turn 1.

Six drivers, meanwhile, opted to sit out the session entirely - Red Bull duo Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen,

Haas pair Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen, Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas and Toro Rosso’s Pierre Gasly.

Carlos Sainz, meanwhile, managed to go out for two quick installation laps, Toro Rosso having repaired the extensive damage incurred in his heavy crash in FP1.

The rain is expected to last into tomorrow, with the prospect of both FP3 and qualifying being held in wet or mixed conditions. (formula1)
